100% Average Tomatometer! Castlevania: Nocturne
FredFilms Postcard Series 3.12
Kevin Kolde and his creative teams have done it again!
(OK, the TM probably fluctuates here and there. 100% when I printed this card, and always closer to 100% than 90%.)
Kevin’s vision has remained steady ever since we published the first, admittedly optimistic postcard for Castlevania in 2008. Early on, since the video games action spanned over centuries that the series could be a “universe” unto itself. Check! Nocturne is the second series in a continuing saga.
And, that characters only visualized in clunky pixels had room for development and growth.
Check! Just skim the Black Nerd Problems review to read one take on the series evolution.
.....
From the postcard back:
Congratulations! You are one of 125 people to receive this limited edition FredFilms postcard!

I just find it very neat that most of the major players in Nocturne come from countries that will or have had big revolutions in their history 👀

The sheer audacity of Castlevania: Nocturne giving me Julia Belmont, an incredible vampire hunter, the highly skilled descendent of Sypha Belnades and Trevor Belmont, and killing her off less than 10 minutes into the first episode?! First Lisa Ţepeş gets murdered by the Church in the first episode of the first season to motivate Dracula's rampage, now Julia Belmont gets murdered to kick off her son's future arc. I get that Castlevania's world is bloody, and murder is very common, but this isn't a fun pattern.
(I'm only 20 minutes into the show, and based on the previous show, I'm willing to bet we'll get some great female characters later. I'm just very grumpy not to get this one.)

Am I the only one who is little taken back by the fact that Richter thought Alucard was a myth and Annette didn’t know who Dracula was?

Why did they make the Abbot so charismatic, why tf does he sound like that???? Did they want the audience to develop a weird religious kink or something I'm seriously wondering

Castlevania -Nocturne spoiler :
- I think Edward was great as Richter. It’s funny that he who played a vampire in the “A Discovery of Witches” became the vamp hunter. I love it.
- Richter character development. Perfecto. 👌
- Báthory Erzsébet was terrifying. I was actually freaking scared. Sick.
-Olrox. Yummi.
- I don’t know if I like Annette. I don’t dislike her but also don’t like her. She’s just meeh.
-Lacrimosa is my new theme song. Both the Mozart and the Evanescence.
-Fuck the Abbot.
-I cannot believe we had Alucard only 30 seconds. I did know he would be appear, but I’m dying on this. It’s just not enough. But it was a great cliffhanger and a super ending of the season.
- I loved how Maria stared at Alucard.
I didn’t really like any of the main characters to be honest. I loved their family dynamic, the story was exiting but just when they were together. But I also really excited about the next season and can’t wait to see Alucard again. Hopefully more than just for 30 seconds. 🥲

So… I'm alive, I apologize for my absence, but this semester has been very difficult for me, with the start of college and personal things (maybe one day I'll talk about them), so I stayed away from Tumblr, because it would bring me more anxiety
Anywa, sorry again for the absence So here it is a fanart I did of Annette from Castlevania Nocture
I absolutely adore her :3 I love the way her control over metal and earth relates to her heritage and culture and I really like the way she deals with her trauma
She's my favorite character so far c:

the fact that Castlevania purists are crying and shitting their pants because Annette was turned from a dansel in distress to a badass WOC will forever be the biggest clowns in the entire world. We all know that they dont care about Annette from the game because Annette wasnt even a character; she was literally a plot device. She was the prise, the reward for bodying dracula after 50 hours of gameplay.
Annette in Nocture is a badass woman of color who's primary backstory evolves her escaping vampire slavery in the carribian during the 18th century french revolution. She fights alongside Richter and she's falls in love with him because of it.
Besides, we all know that the only reason castlevania purists bring up Annette not being the same is because they don't like her being black in the first place.
She's black. she's beautiful. She's kicking vampire butt and she's getting Belmont ass in the process.
go cry a river about it. 💛

Just rewatched Castlevania season 3 and noticed that when St. Germain is in the Infinite Corridor (in episode 6) he sees a vision of what looks like Mesoamerican architecture and people.
I don't know enough to say whether this represents Mayan, Aztec, or some other culture—but it certainly brought to mind Olrox from the new Castlevania Nocture series, who is explicitly Aztec.

Let’s do this again, somewhere more comfortable. And Mizrak can only obey, hounding the shadow that has befallen him, peeling one excuse after another until there is nothing left but the damning truth.

Castlevania Nocture Thoughts
Watching Castlevania Nocture and I am plagued with Thoughts on so many things. I'm gonna ramble about things that Aren't That Deep so be warned.
First I have thoughts on them using Erzebeth Bathory as Main Bad Villain. Like not to sound as a Blood Countess Apologist but all we know about Bathory was speculated slander with no real evidence. I'll add some Wikipedia snipets to illustrate what I mean.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Considering that Castlevania's Dracula gets afforded a humane complexity that wasn't provided by either Bram Stoker's Count Dracula or his historial counterpart Vlad The Impaler, it's strange a villified figure such as the Blood Countess wasn't given the same morally-nuanced treatment.
To add, a deconstruction of the Blood Countess would have provided the perfect opportunity to establish further parallels with Maria Antonia, Olympe de Gouges, and the already referenced Joan of Arc. It would have added more perspective to the Abbot's "revolution is bad!" speech, which at the moment is depicted as fear-mongering nonsence. Even though it did get out of hand.
I suposse it was a creative decision. They wanted to make "Countess Dracula" completely different from Dracula - a bit like he's a poor little meow meow while she's evil incarnate. So they made her a sadist with delusions of grandeur and practically the face of European War Crimes. Which would be ok, if it weren't because I have Thoughts™ on that too!
Why not consider the Marquis de Sade, who lived during the French Revolution, and was the literal creator of sadism? Or if they want to draw parallels with Joan of Arc, why not Gilles de Rais? Or! If we're talking about European Colonization, Christopher Columbus is right there!! I won't make a list but it seems there are so many more suitable candidates than Bathory to play this role.
I must admit my reservations, if taken into consideration, would play a different story than the one we have now. So they're not really constructive- but at least it's out of my system now.
Anyway I really enjoyed the show, and I can't wait to see what the second season has in store!
