Animal Crossing Fish - Explained #220

Aquatic biologists, limnologists, and all those freshwater scientists really have their work cut out for them. I deal with my fair share of pollution in the marine environment, but the issue is even more prolific in freshwater systems. No matter how you look at it, people are drawn to the water, for many great reasons, such as a source of potable water, industry, fishing, recreation, etc. And where there are people, there are unfortunately environmental impacts that often collect in lakes and groundwater much more quickly than they do in coastal waters. We have covered this topic before - because freshwater fish are so vulnerable to this issue - but it's worth covering again with the Diamond Tetra.

The Diamond Tetra appeared for Fishing Tourney 39 in June 2021. During those few days of the event, you could fish up this tiny fish or get it as a gift from chatting with your villagers. It appeared with other fish that matched the theme - Black Ruby Barb and Silver Arowana, both of which I've covered.

Like other tetras we have covered, the Diamond Tetra (Moenkhausia pittieri) belongs in the Order Characiformes, the tetras and their allies. Other fish we have covered in this group include the Neon Tetra, Red-bellied Piranha, and the Yellow King Piranha. Diamond tetras are rambunctious yet peaceful, and they are omnivorous, happy to eat anything they come across. The Diamond is part of the Genus Moenkhausia, which are all native to South America. The Diamond Tetra itself is endemic to just one lake - Lake Valencia - and its tributaries in Venezuela. Of course, that's where the trouble starts.

We have spoken about endemism many times before, but it bares repeating - it means that the species is found no where else in the world. Lots of species could be considered "endemic" under this definition. For instance, the Black Bear could be considered endemic to North America. While true, when the word "endemic" is thrown around, it typically means that the species is locked into a very specific environment in a very specific place. Environmental factors, like temperature or water quality, or physical barriers, like oceans and mountain ranges, prevent it from spreading to new territory on its own. For the Diamond Tetra, this is exactly what's going on. Lake Valencia in Venezuela is situated between mountains. The fish can travel in and out of the lake via its tributaries, but that's really it. And, like many lakes and rivers near human civilization, their habitat is constantly threatened by pollution. It's gotten to the point where wild Diamonds can't be found in the lake proper anymore, and mostly hide in cooler streams that feed into it. Fortunately, like other species of tetras, the Diamond Tetra is hardy. It is not picky about what it eats, and can tolerate a larger range of water parameters than other groups of fish.

The kicker here is that while it's disappearing in the wild, captive populations are booming. The Diamond Tetra is easily bred in captivity - most, if not all specimens you'll see in the pet store are farmed for the pet trade specifically. So, then, why not just dump a bunch of captive-bred fish into their natural habitat? Well, good idea, but remember, Lake Valencia and its tributaries need to get cleaned up first. If the wild populations were given the chance, they could certainly bring back their own numbers.

This little beauty is found in warm fresh waters in rivers, lakes and streams throughout Central America (2). They’re about 3.5 inches long and have pinkish or cream-colored skin (2). They’re pretty slimy (2)! Their mucus coating helps protect them from infection and helps them escape predators (2)!

They come in two varieties (2). Sighted and Blind (1, 2).

Why blind??

“...WHERE WE’RE GOING WE DON’T NEED EYES TO SEE.” (I was going to include a cool Event Horizon screen grab here but it was a bit gorier than I remembered, so you’ll just have to imagine it.)

In any case, the phrase is apt. They really don’t need eyes to see, where they live....

Because the blind ones live in lightless caves (2)!

But why would nature select for blind fish? You might ask... How does blindness give them an advantage?

Well, fish have a special SIXTH SENSE (1,2,3,4) (Not a sixth sense of the Shyamalan variety but still...I’m starting to think that a Mexican Tetra inspired movie night could make for a pretty good line-up).

This sixth sense is basically an array of sensory organs called neuromasts, running in a line down the length of the fish’s sides 2,3,4. This sensor array allows them to more easily avoid predators and locate food (2,3,4).

But, all fish have this adaptation and this still doesn’t explain what selective pressures the Mexican Tetra faced that afforded blind fish an advantage.

Well, as it turns out, the blind fish have a more well-developed lateral line sense than the sighted fish 3,4. Sort of like when Luke Skywalker was better able to use the force blindfolded.

This most likely means that the neuromasts and eyes are “pleiotropically linked” in these fish (3,4).

That basically just means that they’re controlled by the same gene.

So, when a fish doesn’t develop eyes, that frees up that gene to make more plentiful and well-developed neuromasts, instead (3,4).

So, if you’re a predator venturing into a dark cave in hopes of eating some delicious blind tetras, good luck.

The sense of sight you’re accustomed to relying on is useless, and the blind tetra is way better at using the force...er...lateral line sense, than you are.

The sighted version of the tetras tend to live closer to the surface, instead of in caves (1,2,3,4). They’re very similar to blind compatriots, except that they have eyes and a less well-developed lateral line sense (1,2,3,4). Because eyes give them more of an advantage in a lighted environment, they haven’t faced the same selective pressures to renounce their eyesight in favor of The Force (enhanced lateral-line sense).

<3 Love Finds a Way <3

Now, if these fish decide to get a bit adventurous and seek love outside of their accustomed environment (i.e. if a blind cave fish ventures up to the surface or a sighted surface fish decides to explore some caves) they ARE capable of producing fertile offspring (3).

Therefore, these two varieties are not yet considered separate species (3).

But, what we’re probably seeing here, is the beginnings of speciation (3). If these populations remain reproductively isolated for a prolonged period on an evolutionary scale, they’ll probably lose the ability to interbreed, eventually (3).

UNDER THREAT

While these guys do have enhanced fish-sixth-sense abilities, they’re losing a numbers game (1). Invasive species such as tilapia are threatening their ranks (1).

Reducing our consumption of seafood can help reduce the demand for invasive species being cultivated outside their natural habitats (1).

Pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and habitat loss also pose a threat to these little guys and anything you can do to help reduce your carbon foot print can really help them out (1, 2)!

These little guys have a one-of-a-kind way of perceiving and interacting with the world, so let’s do what we can to give them a fighting chance!

004. MAYUMI OLHO VERMELHO

Piranha.

Um peixe de água doce da ordem Characiformes, da família Serrasalmidae.

Um peixe carnívoro tão famoso que provavelmente nem preciso descrevê-lo—Mas se ele conseguiu ver um animal assim, é claro que fazia muito sentido não poder descer a montanha.

Não, não era um animal.

As piranhas não voavam pelo céu, e mesmo as maiores ainda eram menores que 50cm—A palavra gigante não deveria ser uma descrição.

Nesse caso, não era um animal, mas um monstro.

Não, talvez, até mesmo uma monstruosidade.

“Eu consigo ver uma piranha do tamanho de uma baleia, flutuando no ar… Você não consegue ver também, Araragi-san?”

Quando ele perguntou, eu só pude responder que não—Para começar, eu havia escalado essa mesma montanha dessa mesma cidade. Se houvesse uma piranha ou algo voando em cima dela, a cidade teria estourado em um verdadeiro inferno. Era uma aposta segura que essa piranha era algo que qualquer um ou todos não pudessem ver.

Isto é, exceto para Mayumi-kun.

Exceto para o membro do Clube de Detetives de Garotos Bonitos, Mayumi Olhos Lindos.

“Entendo... Você deve ter se assustado muito.”

“Ah... Então você acredita em mim?”

“Naturalmente!”

Tão natural que não tinha como eu dizer que foi apenas um truque de luz ou apenas sua imaginação—Ser capaz de ver algo que você não deveria ver, ou encontrar algo que não deveria existir.

Coisas assim eram diárias para mim, e eu estava ciente de como alguém pode se sentir triste se ninguém acreditasse nisso. Então o que eu podia fazer agora era pegar Mayumi-kun, tremendo no meu colo, e abraçá-lo ainda mais forte—Na verdade, parece que seu tremor aumentou dramaticamente, mas é claro, isso tinha que ser só minha imaginação.

No entanto, uma piranha? As próprias piranhas reais já eram bastante assustadoras, mas se elas se tornassem monstruosidades, então, honestamente, eu não tinha escolha a não ser dizer que isso era algo muito além da minha capacidade.

Uma piranha monstro?

Na pior das hipóteses, era ainda mais assustador do que vampiros.

Na verdade, uma curiosidade é que, apesar de eu ter sido um vampiro no passado, minha visão ainda não era o suficiente para ver a piranha—Era uma piranha que só Mayumi-kun via.

Nesse caso, isso significava que havia um peixe carnívoro feroz que residia nas profundezas de seu coração?

“Mayumi-kun. Você pode abrir a boca um pouco? Q uero conferir se seus dentes ficaram pontiagudos e afiados como os de uma piranha.”

“É, é realmente preciso algo assim?”

“Tá tudo bem, só faça.”

“Por favor, não tente forçar as coisas. Não tá tudo bem, e é por isso que estou resistindo! Posso verificar meus dentes com minha própria língua!”

“Tô te dizendo, acho que é uma boa ideia olhar essa sua língua também, só pra ter certeza. Deixa comigo!”

Se fosse com outra pessoa agora, mesmo que por ajuda humanitária, eu me sentiria extremamente envergonhado e hesitante se tratando de olhar dentro da boca de uma garota, mas considerando que Mayumi-kun era um garoto, não tive problemas em realizar uma verificação oral.

Hunf, Hachikuji vive dizendo coisas assim sem pensar, mas eu não sou realmente mais adequado para ajuda garoto? Talvez eu pudesse liberar todos os meus esforços assim. Embora eu estivesse relutante em dizer isso, talvez eu não tivesse sido completamente cuidadoso quando se tratava das garotas que me deparei até agora—Enquanto pensava nisso, virei Mayumi-kun em meu colo, coloquei minha mão em seu queixo, e comecei a examinar dentro de sua boca.

“Hmm. Vamos ver...”

Eu disse para deixar comigo, mas honestamente, eu não tive exatamente muitas oportunidades de verificar os dentes de outra pessoa, então era difícil declarar algo com certeza. Mas, bom, seus dentes pareciam em perfeita forma e eram muito bonitos. Nesse sentido, pode-se dizer que era um conjunto de dentes digno do Clube de Detetives de Garotos Bonitos.

Mas, para um garoto do fundamental, seus lábios com certeza pareciam bem macios... Por algum motivo, meus olhos continuavam sendo atraídos naquela direção.

“Ah, não, meus lábios só ficaram assim porque foram feitos... Os outros membros me maquiaram... E-Então, eles não terão um gosto bom se você os morder, OK?”

“Ei, ei, eu não vou morder. Não sou uma piranha. Hahaha, embora pudesse ser diferente se fossem lábios de uma garota.”

Foi uma piada questionável feita entre caras que você nunca contaria a um sexo oposto, e eu pensei que isso aliviaria o clima, mas a resposta de Mayumi-kun foi, “Ha, ha ha ha”, uma risada seca como um deserto.

Senti tanta pena.

Ele deve ter ficado muito assustado com a piranha no céu. No entanto, se eu fosse o único a ver algo tão inacreditável, mesmo que eu não ficasse deprimido o suficiente para emanar tanta escuridão, eu ainda poderia ficar completamente surpreso e escolher me esconder neste santuário em ruínas pelo resto da minha vida—Mas Mayumi-kun era diferente.

“Tudo bem agora”, disse ele.

Como se aproveitasse um ponto fraco de instantes, ele pulou do meu colo—Parecia que sua visão era realmente boa, pois ele não perdeu a chance quando meu braço afrouxou um pouco durante a verificação bocal.

“Já estou deprimido há muito tempo. Quero descer a montanha agora.”

Na verdade, existia um jeito desde o começo.

Isso foi o que Mayuki-kun disse.

“Sim. É bem simples, na verdade. Basicamente, se eu não ver a piranha, não terei medo, então tudo o que preciso fazer é descer de olhos fechados.”

Não, não.

Ele disse como se fosse um plano brilhante, mas estava longe de ser tão simples; era um plano feito de puro desespero. Se fosse algo que você realmente pudesse fazer, então você teria feito desde o início, sem ficar deprimido—Mas eu nem tive chance de pará-lo.

Porque Mayumi-kun tropeçou em seu primeiro passo.

Era óbvio demais que isso aconteceria.

Nunca vi algo tão óbvio.

Talvez fosse melhor em uma campina, mas caminhar por esse caminho rochoso e desolado da montanha de olhos fechado era radical demais—Sem mencionar que, tropeçando, você acabaria caindo no chão rochoso também.

“Mayuki-kun, você está bem?”

Corri até Mayuki-kun, que havia caído de frente, e o peguei. E então, senti todo seu corpo para verificar se não havia ossos quebrados ou deslocamentos.

“O-Oiii, hum, espera, você tá me sentindo um pouco demais...”

Sendo apalpado, Mayumi-kun resistiu violentamente.

Isso é bom, não parecia que ele estava gravemente ferido.

Que alivio.

Bem, parecia que ele mesmo sabia que seria perigoso, pois havia dado o primeiro passo com muito cuidado. E ele deve ter se protegido quando caiu, pois suas bochechas lisas e lábios macios estavam ilesos—Embora não totalmente, havia um pequeno arranhão no joelho.

O sangue estava se espalhando em suas calças.

Hmm, provavelmente é tudo bem um arranhão desses, mas, bom, o lugar onde estávamos não era exatamente uma zona segura. Era ponto aéreo para monstruosidades—Seria um problema se um garoto do fundamental que veio de longe tivesse um tétano monstruoso ou algo do tipo, então com um único movimento, enrolei a perna da calça de Mayumi-kun.

“Você é quase tão habilidoso quanto um médico, não é...”

“Bom, eu tenho alguma experiência, afinal.”

“Com tratamento médico?”

“Não, com saias levantadas. Embora seja a primeira vez que enrolo calças de alguém...”

“Ha, ha ha, é mesmo. Hum, você está esfregando muito minhas pernas... ...Eu definitivamente não posso deixar esse cara conhecer o Pernas Nuas-kun [1].”

Então, aparentemente, ele tinha um amigo chamado Pernas Nuas-kun.

Ele deve ser um amigo problemático, já que eu não deveria conhece-lo.

Enquanto pensava nisso, dei uma boa olhada na área afetada, ou seja, no joelho arranhado de Mayumi-kun—E quando dei uma boa olhada, descobri que havia mais sangue do que eu pensava.

Até Mayuki-kun fez “Uwaah...” de supresa.

Lesões como essas eram naturais para garotos em idade escolar, mas ainda assim, era óbvio que as pessoas odeiam se ferir, não importa qual fosse seu sexo.

Para encorajá-lo, eu disse com um tom de voz intencionalmente leve, “Tudo bem, tudo bem. Algo assim melhora se você colocar um pouco de cuspe”, e então eu lambi seu joelho nu.

Eu o lambi diretamente. Slup.

Se a outra pessoa fosse uma garota, eu definitivamente teria mais cuidado e me daria ao trabalho de lamber meu dedo e depois usá-lo para esfregar na ferida, mas como era um cara, era muito mais fácil não ter que me segurar.

Ele deve ter ficado extremamente chocado por ter raspado o joelho, pois o rosto de Mayumi-kun ficou branco como um lençol. Sentindo pena dele, e puxei sua calça de volta para baixo.

“Acho que vai ser muito difícil descer a montanha com os olhos fechados”, eu disse, repreendendo-o.

É literalmente, não observar para onde você está indo. E, visto que ele não era um especialista em artes marciais, não havia como ele conseguir algo assim.

“Não... Tenho certeza que desta vez consigo. Só eu tomar mais cuidado... É só um caminho para baixo, de qualquer maneira, e, já sei! Se eu usar uma bengala…”

“......”

Ele não ia desistir.

Da esbelteza de sua aparência ao estado deprimido que ele mostrou um pouco antes, parecia que eu o havia entendido mal, Mayumi-kun era um estudante do fundamental com muito mais coragem do que eu inicialmente presumi.

Quase senti pena de tê-lo segurando comigo.

Parecia que seus princípios orientadores não vacilariam.

Nesse caso, decidi sobre meus próprios princípios orientadores ao mesmo tempo.

“Então, vamos com isso. Eu não vou te parar mais. Mas, eu tenho uma condição.”

“Ah? Araragi-san, quem é você para por uma condição em mim, quando estamos nos encontrando pela primeira vez e não somos completamente relacionados...”

“Não fale algo tão solitário como se não fossemos completamente relacionados, Mayumi-kun.”

Quando eu disse isso, não foi uma atuação, mas palavras brilhantes da bondade do meu coração.

“Vou descer a montanha com você. Me permita ser sua escolta—E se você quiser uma bengala, fique à vontade para me usar como uma.”

[1] Hyouta Ashikaga, um craque dos esportes e outro membro do clube. Seu apelido é por sempre usar shots e querer exibir suas pernas.

neon tetra are Freshwater fish of the characin family of order Characiformes! the type species of its genus, it is native to blackwater and clearwater!

and theres something really cool about them!!

when they are asleep, or during the dark, their colors turn into shades of black and grey.

Animal Crossing Fish - Explained #211

It took me entirely too long to figure out what this fish was, and it’s pretty embarrassing. I mean, yes, I’m a marine biologist, so freshwater isn’t my jam, but with such a specific name, I foolishly thought this would be easy. My first mistake was apparently thinking this fish was a new species we haven’t covered before. Turns out, despite there being plenty of other piranha species to choose from, ACPC decided to go with the Yellow King Piranha, which is currently just a neat, alt-colored red-bellied piranha.

The Yellow King Piranha (YKP) appeared in AC Pocket Camp in November of 2021 for Fishing Tourney 44 with other freshwater fish.

Now, like I said above, this fish is simply a color morph of the red-bellied piranha (Pygocentrus nattereri), the most famous of the piranhas. We’ve also covered it before, so if you want a full run-down, be sure to read that article, too. TL:DR: Piranhas boast the strongest bite force of any vertebrate; people think they’re scary, but they are also known to eat fruit and crack nuts with those powerful jaws.

Piranhas belong to the order Characiformes, a large and diverse group of freshwater fish some 2000 species strong. They include the piranhas, as well as the popular tetras, for which we’ve covered quite a few, the Dorado, and others. Piranhas belong to Family Serrasalmidae, which includes them and their close, more vegetarian relatives the silver dollars and pacus. Now, here’s where it starts getting confusing, at least for me when I was trying to find info about this fish. First, we’ll start with the name. Although I eventually found out the YKP is another name for a color morph of the red-bellied piranha, I also found a separate scientific name for it - Serrasalmus ternetzi. This implied it was a separate species, and so my wild...fish chase began. But it turns out that this name, and the YKP’s distinction as a separate species, isn’t all that official. They can be found in the wild, in a very small section of the Amazon River Basin, so, maybe it’s all a matter of time.

However, there are also actual, official other species of piranha that look like the icon of the YKP that ACPC provides. So, like, what am I supposed to do? Which species do I say for certain they were going for? I wouldn’t put it past AC to double up on the same species if it’s a popular aquarium pet - and yes, piranhas are popular aquarium fish for the very dedicated, experienced hobbyist. But, like, so are at least 9 other piranha species, some of which look like this icon.

For instance, I’m equally convinced ACPC’s YKP is actually the Peruvian Black Piranha, aka the Redeye Piranha, Serrasalmus rhombeus, native to northern drainages of the Amazon. They come in many, many colors depending on the water conditions, so they are also locally called the White Piranha. They also look like the fellow below with the yellow belly and longer jaws which makes it look very similar to the ACPC icon. Of course, there is the lack of the red eyes, so probably not.

I could go on, but you get it.
