one anime that i was seriously obsessed with as a teenager but like... no one else seemed to be watching and had no lasting cultural impact was Charlotte.
like... it was a bit dodge in the way that all anime in the early 2010s was a bit dodge but man did it HITTTTT... like yeah music really can change lives and being a teenager IS uniquely awful and you DO do crazy things for the people you love like. it really had it all.
and it starts out so deceptively too. it starts out funny and silly and then eventually falls apart just like how growing up feels. LIKE IM CRAZY about this anime . but no one else even gaf about it.
ALSO IT IS JUST SO DAMN BEAUTIFUL. AND THE OPENING IS SO FUCKING GOOD.
The twists and turns in this are no joke! And the character development is heartwarming and pretty believable. It did get grittier and more disturbing than i was expecting towards the end, but that's just a tonal inconsistency. For what it is (a "supernatural kids" school anime), it wasn't afraid to dig in and really explore the sharp, messy edges of that specific genre that i feel like are frequently ignored. It really kept me on my toes having actually no idea what would happen next!
Overall it's a fun, cute piece that comes at you out of left field with some meatier themes. A really good time!
I feel like this anime would appeal to people who liked Steins;Gate, Erased, or Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai.
