the loona situation

there are some things that i think need to be said in the wake of the dispatch chuu article, and that i haven't seen anyone else directly address.

tldr for those who didnt see: loona had a system with blockberry where they shared costs equally, but revenue 70-30 in bbc's favor. this means that if the cost was $100, and the revenue was $100, loona and bbc each paid $50, but bbc earned $70 and loona earned $30, so loona went $20 more in debt to bbc despite the project recouping all of its expenses. these numbers only get worse the higher the cost/revenue ratio is. loona even pays bbc if there is zero revenue, because they get loona's portion of the cost.

functionally, this means that loona stays in debt. forever. according to bbc's numbers, the loona members - even after all of loona's successes and the fact that it makes a net gain now - are all still around $150,000 in debt to the company after 5 years. this is in addition to the other abuses standard to the idol industry, like starvation and mental abuse.

what i want to talk about is this: a series of facts.

1. many of the girls' families were concerned about the promises bbc made to their trainees and thought loona was a scam at best and a trafficking scheme at worst.

2. yves was promised debut within weeks of joining bbc. olivia hye trained for one day. loona 1/3 was flown all over the world for teeny tiny teaser videos. all of this was pre-debut. many of them talk about it seeming too good to be true.

3. go won and olivia hye have admitted they were already starstruck by older members of loona like heejin before even considering joining bbc. they saw their ads at the bus stop on the way to school. they wanted badly to be friends with them.

4. all contracts are individual. any revenue from one girl was given solely to her and applied solely to her own debt.

4a. chuu is the only member who's escaped her trainee debt. her revenue was not applied to anyone else's debts.

6. when a member is in debt to the company at the end of her contract, she can be compelled to renew to pay it back.

7. loona had the most expensive predebut in kpop history.

8. of the 12 members, only haseul, vivi, jinsoul, and yves were over south korea's age of majority — 19 in international age — when they debuted.

8a. of these 4, only vivi, jinsoul, and yves were 20. haseul had turned 19 less than four months ago. 9. kim lip was 18 when she debuted with 'eclipse.' chuu was 18 when she debuted with 'heart attack.' choerry was 17 when she debuted with 'love cherry motion.' go won was 17 when she debuted with 'one and only.' hyunjin was 16 when she debuted with 'around you.' olivia hye was 16 when she debuted with 'egoist.' heejin was 15 when she debuted with 'vivid.'

9a. yeojin was 14 years old when she debuted with 'kiss later'.

i'm begging at this point.

people are so weird about creative works being made for profit. "this is a cash grab" "this is fan service" damn you're telling me that a product was made because someone thought there was a potential market for it? you're saying that this soulless vampire of a creator thought "I could make something people will like and then earn money by selling it to them"? you have said nothing about the actual quality of the work or the conditions under which it was made. it sounds like you're trying to imply that this work was rushed into production and made in a way that exploited people, or that the quality is bad because it's trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator, but you haven't actually said either of those things. are either of those true or are you just mad because you have strange notions about creators owing you Pure Art and you've decided to redirect your rage at billionaires for hoarding wealth to random moderately successful artists.

to anyone else thinking too hard about their art or lackthere of - the fact they cant create and the stress surrounding the fact you feel like you arent good at anything else BESIDES creating - go do something else

no seriously, take a break. your body and your mind really really needs it. 9/10 youre probably extremely burnt out like me. "but im scared to take a break, what if i forget everything i learned?"

this scares the shit out of me too, but chances are, this fear is whats hindering your ability to give your body what it needs - a refresher. a palette cleanser. go sew. go make music. go sculpt something. garden. read a book, fuck it WRITE a book. cook. help someone cook. give yourself a goal without worrying too much about how to achieve it. have fun doing it. make people smile - youll make yourself smile along the way and youll forget all about the fear.

creativity isnt limited to just talent. you can do whatever you want. you can learn whatever you want. that fear of forgetting your passion will go away if you occupy that space with something else just as enthusiastic.

you might not have the energy like i do anymore. you hate the cycle, and so do i. everyone goes through it - but the great thing about the cycle is the fact youll always loop around. and in your lowest, most gutwrenching times when u cant even pick up a needle or look for inspo without comparing yourself or saying why cant i do it like they can - you can. and you will. you just have to give yourself a chance. and that chance starts with a long nap, your favorite video essays or lets plays, and letting your mind and body rest for a little bit.

Alright time for bad batch thoughts 😈

Gonna be kinda brief since we still have a while to go for this season and I spent the past thirty minutes writing critiques of the new avatar show 😭

That first episode had me DEAD. IN TEARS. CRYING INTO MY PILLOW. I did not expect them to go there but damn am I glad they did. It really shows just how terrible the empire is and how much resilience Omega has.

The Hemlock stuff truly disgusts me like the fact that the stuff happening there now leads to the stuff with Grogu and then the stuff with Reys parents (if u read the Shadow of the Sith which explained episode 9 better than the sequels and had my boys luke and Lando) and then to the stuff with Palpatine (as much as it irks me). Likes it's truly terrifying and horrifying the things that Hemlock has and will do "in the name of science". Someone needs to drop kick him and I hope it's Omega herself.

The whole terror and horrifying and depressiveness is just added onto with the hunter and wrecker ep, like that abandoned lab, the vines, the young clones. Horror tropes in Star wars? More likely than you think.

So glad Crosshair and Omega escaped, I did not want to spend any more time on Tantiss, but also it's scary cuz what's gonna happen the other 10+ episodes. No. One. Else. Can. Die. In fact they better find Tech (even if it's not looking to hot for him)

i'm convinced danger days is the coolest piece of multimedia art i've ever enjoyed. a comic series and an album and its associated music videos all perfectly intertwined and referencing one another, a cohesive vibe between the art style and music's sound, the wealth of symbols and symbolism, and consistent themes and messaging throughout. what a project, what an endeavor, what a mind on that gerard way.
