White-lipped Herald Snake - Crotaphopeltis hotamboeia

This handsome snake is Crotaphopeltis hotamboeia (Colubridae), an African species which is also commonly referred to as Red-lipped Snake by its distinctive red lips. This is one of the most common snakes in mesic habitats, including lowland swamps and marshes, in the eastern regions of southern Africa. 

Perhaps the most striking feature of this snake is its irascible behavior when disturbed, when it forms a striking coil, flattens its head to show off the iridescent black temporal patches, and strikes viciously if molested.

The common name "Herald Snake" was allegedly coined in honour of the "Eastern Province Herald" newspaper.

Photographing this specimen was such a treat! Herald Snakes are spectacular, with their orange to red lip(not always present though), black brow and cheeks and olive grey bodies mottled with white. Amphibians are their favourite prey, but they will hunt lizards and even small rodents if the opportunity arose. You are most likely to find Heralds in damp and moist habitats, throughout South Africa. They are absent from arid dry regions. This species is mildly venomous.
