I spent my day working on describing new species of Rhombophryne, the ‘diamond frogs’ of Madagascar. I’ve been working on these frogs since 2013, and have described more than half of the currently known species, but there are still so many species to describe.
Here, I am working on the second most important part of the description of one new species: the holotype description. This involves very careful examination and description of the features of the one specimen that ‘carries’ the name of the species. As you can see, I talk with myself a lot while I am doing this. I’m noting aloud features that are substantially different from other species, or things that are worth describing. I find this quite the best way to keep the features in my mind while I am looking at a lot of things at once—but of course it only works while I have my office to myself.
The *most* important part of every species description is the diagnosis. This includes the list of features that are the ones that ‘define’ your new species, and in many cases also the way that it can be told apart from all the other relevant species. In the case of the paper I am working on here, that is the last thing I will be doing for each species, as it will depend on having everything described and ready beforehand.

The Navaloshi?
I just posted about a species I created for my book on my ko-fi. They’re an almost extinct species that imprint on an animal, creature or person and a young age. If you wanna know more just check out my ko-fi, links in my bio :3

This is a new species with still no name for now. I had the chance to see it for the first time a few years ago with my friend and researcher @acatenazzi who first discovered it and has been working in that valley for more than 20 years. It belongs to the genus Pristimantis, very rich in species all along the Andean cordillera, both in cloud forest and on the low land Amazon basin. This image is from my last trip on 2019 with my Elena and it was very exciting to see this species still present in that small patch of forest. I keep the location undisclosed for conservation reasons, but I’ll show it among other images, during my presentation at MontPhoto next Friday. #amphibian #herp #herping #conservation #frog #picoftheday #peru #newspecies #pristimantis #acca @elenacanessa @ilcp_photographers @montphotocontest https://www.instagram.com/p/CFr06kmAtty/?igshid=8miwrusx7k9a

Hello new followers, here's a creature I saw running down the road the other day. I was looking for pigeon eggs and heard the sound of large stomping feet. Knowing the area i expected some dinosaur, but instead it was a new species of Land shark! He looks somewhat graceful in this pic, but in person he was running like a nerd. ______ #cryptid #creaturedesign #monsterdesign #landshark #shark #dinosaur #foundfootage #void #monster #horror #lovecraftian #newspecies (at Brooks, Alberta) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFyK8T9n-va/?igshid=1ac77jj398zfp

The Cat-Fox, a possibly new species, has been reported after years of study, on the French island of Corsica. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. “A bizarre-looking cat that roams the remote forests of the French island of Corsica may be a new species, according to local news reports. These felines are known to locals as "cat-foxes," and wildlife rangers in Corsica think that they might be a new, undocumented species, according to the Agence France-Presse (AFP). These cat-foxes earned their name because of their size (slightly larger than an average domestic cat) and their tail decorations — most of them have two to four rings on their tails that end in a black tip. The cats are about 35 inches (90 centimeters) long from head to tail; they have wide ears, short whiskers and dog-like teeth, according to the AFP.” - LiveScience.com The article goes on to say: “Researchers at the National Hunting and Wildlife Office in Corsica have been examining these cats for over a decade. Back in 2012, they examined fur left behind when the cat-foxes rubbed their bodies on a stick that had been coated with an attractive scent. When the researchers examined the DNA from that fur, they found these cat-foxes weren't related to any known species around the world, but their DNA was similar to that of the African forest cat (Felis silvestris lybica).” -LiveScience.com Note:This is not to be confused with a cat from Borneo called the “cat-fox” which was caught in a trail cam and looks nothing like this species. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. •. Tumblr media
“The horned crocodile-faced hell heron” is one of two exciting new species of dinosaur to have been unearthed off the coast of England. Found on the Isle of Wight, the 125 million-year-old predator, officially named Ceratosuchops inferodios, had a 9 metre-long body, powerful claws, a gigantic skull covered in horns and bumps, and long crocodile-like teeth. The fearsome creature lived on the fringes of ancient floodplains where it would have lain in wait for aquatic prey, research suggests. Scientists say the discovery, along with the skeleton of a second species at the same site, offers unique insights into how the Spinosauridae family of dinosaurs made the transition from land-dwelling to semi-aquatic predators over a period of tens of millions of years. “This is a really exciting piece of news for the dinosaur world as these are some of the most charismatic and enigmatic predators,” said Neil Gostling of the University of Southampton, who supervised the project. The new finds also cemented the Isle of Wight’s status as the best place in Europe to find dinosaurs, he added. “The fact they have these crocodile-like teeth, which are good for catching slippery fish, means we suspect they were standing in the water and using their jaws to hunt,” said Gostling. Another possibility is that the dinosaurs would have waited, semi-submerged, like a crocodile, or used their large claws to hook fish out of the water like a bear.
