I love the utter stark contrast between how the Three Musketeers are represented by Pokémon and Digimon
Pokémon has them designed to vaguely fit a swordsman theme, their lore is reminiscent of the characters, and they even have Keldeo to mirror D'Artagnan
... and then there's Digimon, whose Three Musketeers are a cowboy, Bayonetta, and a dragon made out of guns
Magnificent

The Swords of Justice
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now it’s time for the regional Legendary Trio, and this time we’ve got a group of ungulates based on the Three Musketeers, surprisingly. Huh. I’ve never been a big fan of either this group or the source material but I guess they get some credit for being a peculiar combination of ideas.
Cobalion is a Steel/Fighting type, likely based around the character of Athos, the leader of the musketeers, since it’s also the leader and eldest member of the Swords of Justice. I’m not sure where exactly the Steel type comes in other than reflecting the original’s use of swords. The design’s not all that bad, I like the combination of an old dude and goat/deer it’s got going on, and the overall blue color is nice. It just never really struck me as a legendary though, for as subjective as that statement is. Cobalion (and the rest of the Swords) always kinda felt like beefier, non-evolving Pokemon you’d find in later game routes, like Tropius actually.
Score: 3.5/5
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Terrakion is a Rock/Fighting type, based upon the character Porthos, who is also the heaviest, though strongest of the group. Terrakion does at least reflect its type somewhat. It’s got a more craggy appearance with some shards jutting off here and there. The big downward-facing horns are nice too, and alongside its bulkier body give Terrakion a resemblance to a bighorn sheep, which is charming. It’s also got the most manlike face, which actually does make it feel somewhat like a mythical creature. Like a manticore or something. Guess it’s my favorite based on that.
Score: 4/5
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Virizion’s type is Grass/Fighting, and it resembles Aramis, who’s said to be the vain romantic of the group. Virizion fits that basic description well, being the more dainty and feminine looking one. I’d like if maybe it had a blooming rose sprouting from that neck-leaf though, just to play up the theatrical drama character I presume good ol’ Aramis has. Virizion is okay, though my least favorite of the three. Not bad, just not a big hitter.
Score: 3/5
Tumblr media Tumblr media
BUT, things don’t stop there because there’s actually a fourth member to this group, based around the character of d’Artagnan. Like its inspiration, Keldeo is characterized as the newest addition to the Swords of Justice with a lot to prove, out of place and inexperienced among its fellow well-known crusaders. Unfortunately for Keldeo, this means it’s also treated with a lot more mystique, and was relegated to event-only exclusivity in its home generation.
Tumblr media
That, alongside with Keldeo’s apparent need for an alternate, powered-up form that actually does nothing mechanically is what really tanks my potential enjoyment of it, for however minor that would’ve been. Keldeo feels like some over-advertised toy to me, some keystone to a collector’s item that makes the group it's apart of ACTUALLY complete. Keldeo’s thin, skin-tone body and overly-fluffy hair and tail just kinda get to me in some way I can’t describe.
Being perfectly honest it may be because it reminds me too much of plastic My Little Pony dolls with the brushable hair. Something about those things always bugged me, the hair specifically. Not even based on touch or feel, just looking at them. This is a tangent I won’t go further into but it’s just some weird personal thing that make Keldeo unpleasant to me. That and the way it’s sectioned off from the other Swords as some extra special event-exclusive accessory. I guess from a more objective stance that doesn’t really impact its design, but this is MY blog and I get to rank the Pokemon HOWEVER I WANT.
Apparently d'Artagnan is usually portrayed with an iconic feathered hat, which I will admit normal-form Keldeo does an alright job of portraying with its mane. I felt it was at least worth mentioning.
Score: 1/5
Tumblr media
But if you like Keldeo fine that’s okay, I guess I can see where that comes from. It’s a cutesy pony-horse, people tend to love those.

Gen 3 pokegen
Tumblr media
This is mostly due to Galar being very mechanically advanced, a probable callback to the United Kingdom's leading industrial revolution.Īnother Mythical Pokemon that could have been hinting at Gen 8 is Marshadow, a Fighting/Ghost-type that could be a representation of shadowboxing. The most obvious reference to Pokemon Sword and Shield's Galar region are Meltan and Melmetal, which don't particularly fit the themes of Pokemon Sun and Moon but blend in perfectly with the UK-based region. The Mythical Pokemon in Pokemon Sun and Moon are Magearna, Zeraora, Meltan, Melmetal, and Marshadow, though there are theories that Magearna was supposed to be a Gen 6 creature who got held back. Liberty Island is famous for the Statue of Liberty, which was a gift from France to the American people, again pointing toward a French setting for the next game. Victini's ties to Gen 6 come its location in Pokemon Black and White: Liberty Garden, inspired by Liberty Island. Genesect is a Pokemon modified by human scientist to be the most powerful of all, and it has a laser cannon on its back - not unlike the Ultimate Weapon that Lysandre uses in Kalos. Keldeo is supposed to be D'Artagnan, the hero and main character of the Three Musketeers, which is clearly a reference to France and its culture before Gen 6's Kalos region was announced.ĭespite Meloetta not being a big hint toward Gen 6's setting or plot, the remaining Mythical Pokemon from Black and White seemingly do have connections. The main and most on-the-nose is Keldeo, a creature added to the Swords of Justice (inspired by the Three Musketeers) Cobalion, Virizion, and Terrakion. Pokemon Black and White feature some interesting Mythical Pokemon that explicitly referred to a European setting for Gen 6. RELATED: A Gen 5 Pokemon Legends Game Would Make a Lot of Sense This is important because Pokemon Black and White ended up presenting a local Pokedex without any of the older critters until the post-game, and the setting was also the first to be based outside of Japan - a fresh start. Meanwhile, Arceus is the creation deity, and Gen 4 games featured multiple new evolutions or baby forms for existing Pokemon. N is led to believe that people are ungrateful toward Pokemon, quick to abandon or abuse them, which he changes his views on after being confronted by the main character. As for Shaymin, the creature symbolizes gratitude, which is a big theme in Pokemon Black and White's storyline around N and Team Plasma. In Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, the major Mythical Pokemon to possibly hint at Generation 5 were Shaymin and Arceus, with a notable mention to Darkrai as a parallel with Pokemon Black and White's Dream World. Pokemon Diamond and Pearl introduced the most Mythical Pokemon in the series, tied with Pokemon Black and White depending on whether players consider Phione a Mythical creature. How Gen 3 Mythical Pokemon Hinted at Generation 4 RELATED: Pokemon: What The Rumored April 2022 Announcement Could Be Yet, this became a pattern that can often accurately predict what the setting for new Pokemon games could be. It remains a mystery whether these Mythical Pokemon were designed specifically to hint at future games or if they were conceived at a time when Game Freak was already working on the next set of titles, making their designs inherently more in-line with the themes of following games. While Mew and Celebi didn't necessarily hint at Gen 2 and Gen 3 Pokemongames, it's very likely that the Mythical Pokemon from Gen 3 onward did come with clues about the following Generation. Yet there was a pattern that indicated which ideas The Pokemon Company wanted to explore in the future. However, this wasn't always the case, and there was a time when there was no guarantee of another Pokemon game. It is widely assumed that Generation 9 Pokemon games are in the works despite no official announcement, simply because it's been the trend for Nintendo and Game Freak to release a new mainline Pokemon game every three years on averag. With Pokemon becoming a worldwide phenomenon where every major release sells millions of copies, the franchise is one of the biggest on the market.

So from spending so much time in working on creating an artificial Pokemon and failing (the brainstorming took me two weeks), I decided to take a break and observe some of my newer caught Pokemon when they’re not doing tasks.
Speeds has a bit of an ego, and thinks he’s the fastest, but was unable to beat Spooks and Anubis in a race. He then spent time brooding and roosting a ways away from the camp, clearly hurt until Sean gave him a small talk. He now walks around, looking at everyone else as if keeping an eye on them, as if they’re part of his flock. I don’t know what Sean said to him, but it clearly left an impact. He’s a prideful bird.
Spooks is very curious, and keeps trying to touch everything that’s in his reach, I had to put many things on guard as Spooks being a ghost, it’s difficult to keep a hold of him, so the more delicate and dangerous items have one guard on duty while I’m working.
Striker and Fatal spend their time studying each other’s strikes, Gregory often joins in on these study sessions. It seems that despite them being entirely different Urshifu’s with different strike forms, they still believe in learning from each other, even teaching Gregory how to do their strikes. That is a true warrior right there.
Porthos, Aramis and Athos often stay out of the way, keeping to themselves or training their swords. D’Artagnan has warmed up to everyone else, but it’ll be a while for the other Swords of Justice, especially Athos. All in due time though.

Doodledex - #647 Keldeo
In a shocking twist, the kami trio and Tao trio have actually been interrupting the Swords of Justice the whole time they were interrupting each other! But it’s not entirely their fault.... Keldeo happens to be a Mythical, so naturally it’s at the typical Mythical position at the end of the Gen 5 dex. (...Ignoring that Victini’s already ignored this “rule” about dex order.)
Keldeo hasn't been around as long as the other Swords, so it still has a lot to learn from them about fighting and being a hero. In its Ordinary form, its horn isn’t that strong, so it tends to use its legs more in serious combat, along with the jets of water it can blast from them. But eventually Keldeo will be ready to learn the move Secret Sword from its teachers... and once it does it'll take on its Resolute form, gaining a sharper, sturdier horn in the process! (Kind of makes the fact that it has access to Sacred Sword like the others just a tiny bit redundant... but hey, you gotta switch up your technique once in a while.)

Rate the designs of the Swords of Justice?
I actually did the trio over here, but Keldeo counts and I never did it in that review, so I'll do it now:
Tumblr media
On the one hand, Keldeo has a bit more of a cohesive design than the main trio does, and there's less awkwardness in there. On the other hand however, I also kind of feel like it's less memorable than the others. it's got some funky hair, but it's otherwise just a unicorn. Nothing wrong with that, but not as interesting as the others (for better or for worse).
When it comes to the design, i really don't care for the weird bulbous snout, and there's really more colors than needed (an all-blue mane would've sufficed and would've been a nod to the water typing). However, I do like the giant-ass eyebrows, and the horn's at least drawn in an interesting way (in the sense that it curves and merges directly with the forehead instead of being separate).
In terms of theme, D'Artagnan is the youngest musketeer, so Keldeo at least has a fittingly youthful appearance compared to the others, and a new form once it's become a proper musketeer:
Tumblr media
I'm not really big on the Resolute form for a few reasons. First, it feels like more could've been done to make it symbolically "fit" more with the others now that it's joined their ranks. For example, all the others have boot-like hooves, whereas this just has regular ones. I also feel like it could've gotten a horse-like body instead of colt-like, to showcase its growth in a more literal way.
And aside from that, there's just a bit too much going on here. That giant-ass horn looks pretty silly, and doesn't look like it connects to the body at all. I don't mind it getting bigger, but maybe make the shape more natural and make it red or something, then make the hooves the lighter blue. Then you have less colors and the design's a bit more cohesive as well.
The three feathers are nice in the sense that there's one color for each of the main trio, but they're just kind of there instead of looking like part of the body. Maybe something larger and feathery-er, to represent the feather hats worn at the time and to nod back to its original eyebrows. And I'd remove those fins above the eyes; they're not adding much.
Finally, what's weird about this form is that it doesn't seem to do anything other than signal it learning a new move. You'd at least expect a stat boost or something for it.
So as a whole, it's okay. It's not as awkward looking as the rest of the line, but it doesn't bring much new to the table either, and the alternate form could've used some work from both a design and a concept standpoint.

All for one and one for all! ...Hey, I got it this time! Finally.
So yeah, here's my Keldeo, d'Artagnan. He's quite a bit younger than the other Swords of Justice, not very experienced. Doesn't even have a sword yet. He'll get one in due time, though, don't worry. :)

top five legendary pokemon
1) Mewtwo. Though granted, it’s a gimme because mewtwo’s my favorite Pokemon in general soooooo (like seriously Mewtwo’s my fucking phone background. Love ‘em)
2) Rayquaza. The design is fucking sick. And its moves? Needless to say I spent a ton of time in Mystery Dungeon climbing atop Sky Tower to recruit them. (I honestly don’t remember how long it took to catch when I played Sapphire....though when I played Omega Ruby I know I critical captured on the first go)
3) Victini. Victini was my first event-only legendary, and not actually a bitch and a half to catch. And cute. Very cute.
4) Xerneas. I love the concept and the design, I just never actually....actually use it much.
5) The whole of the Musketeer Trio. Look, I fucking love that we have Pokemon based on The Three Musketeers, of all things.  I love that I instantly recognized them because I was actually reading the 3 Musketeers at the time. Every time I name them after their musketeer. d'Artagnan has a fursona and his name is Keldeo
