I haven't written McDanno in forever, so idk if the characterization is anywhere near correct. But some McDanno for you all.
****
"Shut up," Steve practically growled as he glared through the windshield from the passenger seat. There wasn't much to glare at, as the pouring rain was coming down so hard, if he hadn't crashed into any of them on their way back to the truck, he couldn't know there were trees out there.
"I didn't say anything."
"Then why can I hear your ranting anyway, Daniel?"
"Maybe because I am both flabbergasted and amazed at the same time that a previous boy scout turned Navy SEAL who grew up on this island is the one who keeps getting hurt on these adventures you insist on dragging me into!"
"Did you really just say flabbergasted?"
Danny sighed and they returned to silence between them, the only noise being the pouring rain in the jungle. "I can't believe people have paid for this noise to help them fall asleep."
"Not everyone associates any form of water with drowning."
"Yeah, well, that's just another bit of evidence that I'm just smarter than almost everyone," Danny grumbled. There was a pause before he looked over and asked, "How's your leg?"
"Hurts like a bitch. Pretty sure I sprained something but nothing feels broken."
"You're not escaping a doctor visit."
"I never said I wasn't."
"Good."
"I just don't really see why I'd have to. Once we get back, I can ask Max to look me over, get the better bandages, we have over-the-counter pain meds at home. Done and done."
"No," Danny said firmly.
They entered another bit of silence that stretched on, despite the air being filled with a tension of both of them wanting to say more.
Steve sat up, and reached over, while calling out, "Hey..." When he turned Danny's face toward him, he captured the blond's lips with his own in a tender kiss. When they pulled apart, Steve smiled at Danny and ran his hand through his lover's soaked hair, "I'm sorry for ruining your hair."
Danny scoffed but cupped Steve's face and pulled him in for another kiss. This one came with Danny licking Steve's bottom lip. They adjusted as best as they could in the front of Steve's Silverado so they could deepen the kiss into a proper make-out session. When they pulled back this time, Danny flicked Steve's forehead with a nonheated glare, "When are you going to apologize for hurting my boyfriend?"
"That really more important than messing up your hair?" Steve asked with a small, but amused smile.
"Damn right, it is. He's mine. And I hate it when he's hurt. Only acceptable instances are bites from me or bruises left by grips when we're having some fun at home on lazy mornings."
"It's not just lazy mornings."
"If it had been, we'd be at home, making lunch and watching a game..."
This time it was Steve's turn to sigh. He turned back to facing forward but reached for Danny's hand and interlocked their fingers. He brought Danny's hand to his lips and kissed his knuckles, "I want you to see the island like I do. To see it as beautiful and enchanting. I...I want you to like it, if you can't love it. So you're not just tolerating it."
"...hey," Danny echoed what Steve had done earlier and cupped his face and made Steve face him. He leaned in and gave him a gentle, loving kiss, "The island and I are...getting used to each other. Grace's opinion on it matters most to me, and she loves it. But next to being able to be near my daughter, I got another reason for this pineapple infested hell hole to actually be paradise for me."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah. And he's got some shit luck every time he tries to get me into the jungle. And hopefully will read into that, that it's a sign from some spirits, to stop bringing your boyfriend out to the jungle!"
"I don't know, Danno. I think we gotta try again. To show whoever keeps fucking up my jungle dates that they can't win! We're winners!"
"Next time you ask me out on a jungle date, you're really gonna have to work for it."
Steve grinned devilishly, "You know I love a challenge. And I know all you like. I'll enjoy getting you to agree for a next time, Danno."
"With what you'll have to do to get me to say yes, not as much as me, babe."

and now for a brief interlude...
I re-watched Silverado tonight, the 80s western with Kevin Costner, Kevin Kline, Danny Glover, and Scott Glenn.
went looking through the tumblr tag and like. well. i forgot that there's something infinetly more popular that's also named silverado, but in my defense, there's apparently like 99% more people on this stie blogging about their trucks than you'd expect.

Movie Review | To Sleep With Anger (Burnett, 1990)
Tumblr media
Like many people, my primary reference point for Danny Glover's career is his role as Roger Murtaugh in Lethal Weapon, wherein he famously declares that he is "too old for this shit" and grows exasperated at the unpredictable behaviour of his loose cannon partner and the escalating violence that surrounds him. What I'm saying is, there's a certain geriatric quality about him. He holds his own in an action movie context, but also comes across like a relatively nonthreatening figure. (It was a bit startling to see Silverado recently, where he comes across as much more potent and even a bit cool.) In To Sleep With Anger, he takes that veneer of harmlessness and subverts it, rendering insidious his usual geniality and bonhomie. Glover plays a man who shows up at a family's house claiming to be a distant relative and never leaves, insinuating himself into the fractures in the family's relationships. It's the kind of performance that gets under your skin and stays with you, much like the character he plays.
Soon after he arrives, Burnett signals to us something is off about this character, with his insistence on clarifying that he's been invited and specifying his sleeping arrangements. This is something that struck me as almost vampiric, but the Criterion Collection essay by Ashley Clark cites the Hairy Man folktale as the inspiration. Likewise, there are further hints to his sinister nature when another character (played by Sy Richardson, known to me for his collaborations with Alex Cox, and who I just learned also played the father in Petey Wheatstraw, the Devil's Son-in-Law) prods him about the fates of three boys who were murdered, only for him to provide the cagiest of responses. And while his presence hangs psychologically over all members of the household, his influence proves greatest on the ne'er-do-well son (Richard Brooks), who is seduced by his rejection of traditional values like hard work and religion. There's also a slyly comic angle to the proceedings, like the arrival of Glover's increasingly fogeyish friends who like him never leave and proceed to wear on the family's patience, as well as the slapstick- and satire-tinged fate of his character.
Burnett plays all this at a level just below horror, preferring to let the sense of unease simmer rather than accumulate into a clearer sense of threat. We know something is off, but can't really grasp what or rationalize it away. When I read Roger Ebert's review, I can understand his frustration that the film never reaches a boil like the premise would suggest. But Burnett is less interested in suspense than in observing how the rhythms of this family's domestic life are disrupted by the presence of the Glover character. It's informed by the neorealist style of his earlier Killer of Sheep, but not limited to it. (I do owe that movie a rewatch, as it's been a couple of years and for whatever reason I wasn't in the right mood when I watched it.) And it's not just in the abstract, observational sense, as Burnett will focus his attention to specific objects or events of implied symbolic value, like Glover's lucky knife, his nudie deck, his snakeskin-like shirt during a dinner party, the remedies the wife tries when her husband falls ill (only to be chastised by her preacher for not settling for the power of prayer), and the suggestion that the number of patients in the hospital correlates to the full moon. I confess that the resonance of some of these things went over my head, but I appreciate the way Burnett avoids clear explanations and prefers to transplant us into this situation. We don't need to be told that something is off about Glover, we can feel it just like the protagonists.

Ho'ohuli Na'au - Close to Heart
Tumblr media
1 2 3
CW: none
The next time Karen met Steve, he came by the school, his weapon strapped to the thigh holster and his badge on full display as he walked into her office with a smirk playing on his lips.
"Commander, are you stalking me?" The brunette returned his smirk when she looked up from her paperwork and pointed to the chair in front of her desk.
Clearing his throat, he sat down and leaned back, watching her put the papers away. "Actually I'm not stalking you, I asked at the front desk for you."
"Of course you did and you still knew I'm at Kukui High from that hostage situation you worked on." Karen leaned back and smiled at the former SEAL. "What brings you here, Steve?"
He brushed his fingers along his chin, knowing he'd need to shave again or he'd look like a caveman, also according to Danny he already was. "Well, I wanted to ask you out. For a coffee, of course."
"Really?"
Nodding his head, he crossed his legs and smiled that nervous smile he got whenever Danny told him he'd not be human enough for civilian life. "I thought maybe at the Starbucks down by the Hilton, I heard it's quite good."
"Sure, I'd love to." Karen got up from her seat and grabbed her suit jacket and purse. "Come on Commander, let's go."
Springing into action, Steve got out of his own seat and followed after the brunette with a smile and he'd be lying if someone saw him, but he had a light spring in his step. "Let's go, Ma'am."
He led her outside to his truck, opening her door for her like his mother taught him when he started to express interest in girls - and he knew if she found out he wasn't gentleman enough, Doris McGarrett would have his hide. Karen thanked him with a smile and Steve quickly walked around the dark blue Silverado, climbing behind the wheel and driving off.
"So, what brought you over to my side of the town? Is it a new case you got?"
Shaking his head, the former SEAL watched the brunette carefully, "Nah, it's a slow day, no cases as of yet. But criminals don't take a day off so"
"Don't jinx it then."
Karen smiled as they drove along Kapiolani Boulevard, the buildings and greeneries flying by. She enjoyed the comfortable silence that had come over them, glancing next to her at the former SEAL, watching his toned muscles move under his skin, his biceps bulging once in a while as he moved his hand across the wheel.
Steve knew she was looking. He could feel her eyes on him even though she tried not to make it obvious, so he tried to rouse a reaction, long to see her feelings written all over. "So, what made you decide to move to Hawai'i? It's not like people just up and leave to stay here and work."
"Are you interrogating me, Commander McGarrett?" Karen let out a soft giggle and turned in her seat. "You know I'm not one of your suspects, I'm going to tell you what you want to know?"
Clearing his throat, the former SEAL shifted uncomfortably in his seat. "Sorry, work habit I guess."
Nodding her head, the brunette let out a soft sigh and leaned back against the headrest. "I needed to get away from the douche of an ex-fiancé and my former best friend. He's a lawyer in New York and fucked her in his office, thought we were still going to marry after I found them together. So I packed my bags and left, needed a new scenery and such."
"Wow, he sounds like a piece of work." Steve commented, cringing at the thought that someone might hurt Karen like that. "I'm sorry to hear about that."
Snorting, the brunette grinned at him, her green eyes filled with mirth. "Don't lie, you don't sound sorry at all."
"Yeah, I'm not sorry. He's an idiot and I'm happy you decided to leave that piece of shit behind." He laughed and shot her a teeth flashing grin. "I'm glad you're here now, though."
Karen smiled at him, her hand itching to touch him, but they weren't even intimate - well that one time didn't count - so he probably wouldn't appreciate her being too forward.
Traffic had been light for a weekend, people enjoying the sun with surfing, swimming and just laying in the sand. Steve parked outside the hotel complex and jumped out of his car, wanting to open the door for her before she could do it herself.
"Whoever said chivalry is dead." Taking his hand, Karen hopped out of the truck and returned his grin. "Your mother taught you well it seems."
Nodding ruefully, he let go of her hand and stepped back. "She hasn't been around much but she taught me the important things in life."
"Sounds like she's an amazing woman."
"Oh she is."
Together they moved through the throngs of people enjoying their time at the Hawaiian Village Resort. Steve led her to the cafe and told her to take a seat. "You want regular or special?"
"Actually, I'll have some black tea with cream, please."
The former SEAL stopped in his stride, before another smile broke on his face. "Sure, just let me get it for you."
Sending him one of her own smiles, Karen leaned back in her seat and let her eyes follow after him, appreciative of the way his cargo pants fit him. Biting her lip, she shook her head. This was definitely going to get interesting.
A few minutes later Steve returned with their beverages, smiling as he sat down across from her.
"So what else do you want to know, Commander?"
"I'll take whatever you tell me." He shrugged, taking a sip of his coffee and smiled at her.
"Well, I guess with your resources you already looked into me and know most of my story."
Sheepishly Steve nodded his head. "We were checking you when you got taken hostage with the kids, but I'd love to hear it from yourself."
"Well, all right Commander, here it goes." Karen moved forward and placed her elbows on the table, smiling at the former SEAL and keeping her hands on her cup of tea, not wanting to send him running with inappropriate behaviour too soon. "I was born in New York, my father is an English teacher originally from Birmingham, UK. My mother is a nurse at the Presbyterian and a worry wart, she's the one thinking I'm going to jump down a cliff because of Martin, my ex, but they are the best parents I could wish for."
Nodding his head, Steve copied her, his eyes watching her delicate fingers as they played with the rim of her cup. He probably was being bold, too forward but he had had that urge since she got into his car. Without further thinking about what it would mean in the end, he reached out his right hand and took a hold of her left one, lightly brushing his thumb over the back of it. Her skin was so smooth and instantly he felt like he was tainting her with all of the bad things that had followed him throughout the last couple of years, but yet she smiled and he felt like he could let go, just for a second.
Leaning closer he dipped his head, his eyes never leaving her lips as he saw the tip of her tongue moving over them, wetting the plumb flesh. Steve made a split second decision and lightly put the hand holding hers behind Karen's neck, his breath fanning over her lips.
Steve's ringtone interrupted them, again they were so close.
"I'm sorry." He whispered. Another groan left his mouth when the ringing still continued.
"I think you should take that, it might be important." Karen mumbled, putting her hand around his wrist. She smiled at him and moved away.
The former SEAL let out a sigh and grabbed his phone. "McGarrett." He instantly moved into his cop mode, leaning back in his chair. "I'll be right there."
The brunette gave him a soft smile. "Go, we'll take a rain check."
"I'm so sorry, this wasn't how I planned it. I promise we'll do this right the next time." He stood up, his hands on his hips.
Karen smiled up at him, her eyes glinting with mirth. "Oh, there's going to be a next time?"
Snorting, he leaned down and placed a swift kiss on her cheek. "I intend to."
"I hold you to that." She grabbed his wrist and gave it a soft squeeze. "Go get the bad guys, Commander."
He nodded his head, a smile playing in his lips as he turned and left the cafe. Karen but her lip, leaning back in her seat. It was definitely going to be interesting for the two of them.
Tumblr media
Karen needed to get some grocery shopping down. The empty fridge was screaming at her to get up from the couch and do exactly that.
With a sigh she got up, no use in putting it off again. There was only so much take out she could eat, especially when she was nagging Ally to eat healthier. The brunette grabbed her purse and made her way out of her apartment, the store just down the road.
She entered the climatized building and smiled at Miss Cho. She was a regular there, coming in at the same time every three days to get fresh Croissants from the in-store bakery. Grabbing a basket, Karen moved down the isles, taking stock of what she might need and wasn't looking where she was going when she read the instructions on the back of a homemade pizza dough mix. Only when she collided with another person, she looked up.
"Oh my, I'm so sorry." She gasped, looking at the older woman she ran into. "Are you okay, Ma'am?"
She laughed softly and waved away any concerns. "I'm fine, don't you worry. I'm tougher than I look." She smiled and held out her hand. "I'm Doris, I don't think I've seen you round here before."
"Karen, nice to meet you. Well, usually I don't come in here on a Saturday, but I was running out of food and an apple and a slice of bread won't keep me fed." Karen joked, holding up her basket with the much needed food.
The dark blonde woman smiled with a nod. Doris McGarrett had seen the folder with her pictures and information on her late husband's - well, her son's desk. Either she was a suspect in a case or he was trying to get a date with her. "So, are you a local?"
"Oh no, I moved here from New York about two months ago for work." Pushing a few strands of hair behind her ear. "It took some getting used to hearing the ocean instead of all night traffic."
"I know what you mean. Hey, do you have something planned later on? My son trains the Pee Wee Baseball group, why don't you come and watch it." She wanted to know why her son was so interested in her, there had to be something special.
Karen bit her lip. She had been debating on visiting Iolani Palace and ask Steve for another date but she wasn't sure that's what he wanted. Now this stranger invited her to a baseball game, she didn't even know any of the rules, never wanted to know about the sport. "I, thanks for the invitation, but to be honest I have no idea when to cheer and when to boo."
"Oh don't worry, you'll get the hang of it very quick."
Tumblr media
Having changed into a pair of jean shorts and a loose tank, Karen made her way to the stands, looking for the blonde woman, Doris. When she turned, the brunette saw Steve standing next to the field, clapping his hands to motivate the kids.
He walked back to the blond man he was with that day at the shrimp truck and turned to the audience. That's when he saw Karen sitting down next to his mother and Chin Ho with a smile on her face.
"What you lookin' at, babe?" Danny asked him, following his partner's gaze as he zeroed in on the brunette sitting next to Doris. "Is that Karen Bishop? I didn't know you invited her."
"I didn't, I never got a chance to." Steve mumbled, uncertainty coloring his words before the Jersey detective pulled him back to the game. The Honolulu Shrimps still needed two points to win the game against the Navy Brats, and both Danny and the former SEAL hoped to get the kids to not lose the fun they had. Gracie was up for the next pitch and since she scored a home run on the last game, she was hyped to do it again. "Come on, Gracie. You got this."
She walked up to stand in her spot, taking a deep breath and watching the pitcher of the other team closely. The girl gripped the bat tightly and waited for the right time, just like before, to have fun and try to win. This was just a game. Danni and Uncle Steve would be proud regardless.
"That's Grace, my son's partner's daughter. Often enough it feels like he's adopted her as his own." Doris smiled, clapping and whooping with everyone to cheer on the young girl. "She's really good, thanks to her dad. Stevie was more of a football guy."
Giggling, Karen waved at him when she finally saw him looking at her. Steve was grinning broadly, before everyone erupted in cheers at Grace scoring another home run for the Honolulu Shrimps. He threw his hands in the air and screamed at his adopted niece to run across the field.
The adrenaline was rushing through him, he jumped up and down, Danny holding his arms open for Grace to run into. "We got it Gracie, you did it!"
"You were amazing, Grace." Steve praised her, brushing his hand over her shoulder. Turning around he looked towards the stands, seeing his mom, his friends and Karen - she especially made him feel warm.
"Why are you still standing here?" Danny nudged him towards the stands with a smile. "Go get her Smooth Dog, she won't be waiting around forever."
Sending him a questioning look, Steve turned around and made his way to the audience, smiling as he stopped in front of Karen. She leaned against the fence, her fingers inside the meshes, holding on tight.
"Hello, Commander." She greeted him softly, a light blush coloring her cheeks. "You guys did a great job out there."
He thanked her, the corners of his mouth pulling up in a smile, the light wrinkles in the corner of his eyes more prominent that day. "How'd you know we got a game today?"
"I didn't, actually your mom invited me along." Karen answered pointing to Doris, who was talking to Chin, Lou and Kono who had joined them. "Besides, I think it's my turn to invite you to dinner now that our first date was cancelled by some idiot doing bad things."
Snorting, Steve leaned his arm on the fence. "Well, that's true, I suppose. What did you have in mind?"
"I'll think of something." Biting her lip, she smiled at him. Crossing her arms over her chest, Karen walked away from the fence and left the stadium. The former SEAL grinned and pushed away from the fence, before he remembered he never gave her his number. So he called out to her, stopping the brunette in her tracks. "Well, I know where you work, I'll meet you there."
Doris turned and saw the smile on her son's face. She wasn't around much and a spy but she was happy when her children were happy and seeing Steve look like that warmed her heart. He deserved it, after all the heartache she caused him years ago and now with Catherine gone, there should be a new start.
"Commander McGarrett? There's someone here for you, they said you knew them." A HPD officer told Steve as he brought her up to HQ.
Tumblr media
Looking up, the former SEAL smiled when he saw Karen standing there with her hair done in elegant waves and dressed in navy blue dress that showcased her curves perfectly. "Thanks Pua, I'll take it from there."
Thanking the officer, the brunette gave him a soft smile and then turned back to Steve. "Hey."
"Hey, what you doin' here?"
Smirking, Karen leaned against the desk in his office and crossed her arms over her chest. "I told you I'd take you out for dinner. Last time I checked, it's dinner time right now."
"Right, let me get this finished and we'll be on our way." He tapped a few keys on his laptop, before he closed it and grinned up at her. "I'm all done, let's go."
He stood up and held his arm out for Karen to take, making their way out of Ali'iolani Hale. Together they waved at Kenny, one of the security guards at the front desk and exited the building.
"So, we taking your car or mine?"
Steve looked around, expecting to see another vehicle in the parking lot but besides his truck there was none. Giggling softly, the brunette leaned into his side and shrugged her shoulders as if she was laughing at an inside joke. "Actually, I don't have a car. Usually my friend picks me up for work or I'll take the bus or a taxi."
"You don't have… damn, that gets expensive real fast." He didn't know what to say. Public transport in Honolulu could be he'll, not just financially. "You should definitely look into getting a car, it's easier to get around in."
"If you know a good dealer, be my guest and help me look for a nice one."
Pursing his lips, Steve opened the door for her and helped Karen inside the truck, but not without sneaking a glance at her legs that were nicely showcased by the dress she wore. Taking a deep breath, he closed it and walked around the car. He didn't know the last time he felt so nervous to be on a date - had he ever really been on a date? There were times with Catherine, but those were far and few between, besides that one time at Christmas when she had told him she thought of something a little more fancy instead of greasy food in a car. Steve had gone all out for that date.
Once he was seated, the former SEAL turned to his date and smiled. "Where to Ma'am?"
"I got a table at Tommy's Bahama Restaurant, it's not too fancy... hopefully." Karen winced a bit at the suggestion, maybe she should have asked before making reservations. During the time with Martin they usually went to atera in Tribeca, an expensive but amazing restaurant. He hadn't really liked it, but Martin didn't like many things besides his job and sex, everything else was just there to be done with. Letting out a soft sigh, Karen leaned back against her seat, leaning her elbow on the door and watching the buildings pass them by.
"I bet it's great, I've never been there but right now I could do with any food. Just hope they'll let me in with these clothes."
The brunette giggled at his joke, knowing he was trying to lighten the somber mood that had come over them. She turned over and leaned closer, putting her hand on right arm. Steve nearly jumped at the contact, too absorbed in traffic to notice their closeness before he relaxed under her touch.
"If they don't let you in, we'll get a different restaurant or just get take out."
Chuckling, Steve held out his hand for her to take. It had been so long since he had another female besides his family give him the contact he didn't know he craved. This right there felt right, just the way it could be - should be every day. He didn't want her to be a rebound from Catherine, he wanted her to be the real thing.

In Memory of Brian, Fred and Jerry by Susan King
Tumblr media
I mourn the loss of Hollywood legends, especially those I have interviewed over the years. I broke into tears when Debbie Reynolds died four years ago, recalling our last chat together in 2016 when we did a duet of “Moses Supposes.” And I still haven’t watched TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD (’62) since Gregory Peck died in 2003. I had the opportunity to interview the handsome Oscar-winner at his now torn down home in 1997 and 1999. He was everything you’d hope he would be – sweet, intelligent and funny. He also loved Bob Dylan. His last words to me as he walked me to my car were: “You are a most interesting young lady.”
In 2020 alone, I lost over 20 former interviewees including Kirk Douglas, whom I interviewed eight times between 1986-2017, and my beloved Olivia de Havilland, who I found to be delightful and a bit ribald in the two interviews I did with her. I got more than a little misty when Brian Dennehy, Fred Willard and Jerry Stiller died this year. They were supremely talented and made our lives a little brighter with their performances. And, they all were great guys and fun interviews.
Brian Dennehy
I interviewed Brian Dennehy, who died in April at the age of 81, several times in the early 1990s when I was at the L.A. Times. The former U.S. Marine and football player was intimidating at first sight. He was tall, burly and barrel-chested. He had a no-nonsense quality about him, and he spoke his mind. But he also was funny.
Tumblr media
In 1991, discussing how hard it was for some actors to land parts after starring in a TV series, he noted “coming off a TV series is a tough deal, and you go into limbo land for a while, if not forever. Most actors go immediately to the ‘Island of Lost Actors’ and stay there. Troy Donahue is the mayor.” Dennehy never went to that island. Not with the complex and often memorable performances he gave in such films as FIRST BLOOD (’82), SILVERADO (’85), COCOON (’85), PRESUMED INNOCENT (’90) and as Big Tom in the comedy TOMMY BOY (’95).
He was nominated for five Emmys, including one for his chilling turn as serial killer John Wayne Gacy in the miniseries To Catch a Killer (’92).
I had one of the most extraordinary evenings at the theater in 2000 when Dennehy reprised his Tony Award-winning role as the tragic Willy Loman at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles in the lauded revival of Arthur Miller’s masterpiece Death of a Salesman. It was a gut-wrenching performance that left me emotionally exhausted. He earned another Tony in 2003 as James Tyrone in the revival of Eugene O’Neill’s superb Long Day’s Journey into Night. And he never stopped working.
Shortly after his death, the drama DRIVEWAYS (2020) was released on streaming platforms. And it could be Dennehy’s greatest performance. He plays Del, an elderly widower and Korean War vet who sparks a warm friendship with Cody, the young boy next door. The reviews for the film (it’s at 100% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) and Dennehy have been glowing. The L.A. Times’ Justin Chang wrote that Dennehy’s Del is as “forceful and tender a creation as any in this great actor’s body of work.” And Jeannette Catsoulis of The New York Times stated: “What we might remember most, perhaps appropriately, are Dennehy’s warm, weary features and rich line readings. In a lovely final monologue, Del advises Cody to avoid rushing past the experiences in life that matter, as they pass so quickly on their own. Much like the careers of beloved actors.”
Fred Willard
I first encountered Fred Willard as the clueless sidekick of sleazy talk show host Barth Gimble (Martin Mull) in the late 1970s on the syndicated comedy series Fernwood Tonight and its continuation America 2-Night. I quickly became a fan, and that admiration grew when he became a member of Christopher Guest’s stock company of zanies in such comedies as WAITING FOR GUFFMAN (’96) and BEST IN SHOW (2000). In the latter, he played the equally clueless dog show announcer Buck Laughlin who quipped in his color commentary, “And to think that in some counties these dogs are eaten.”
Tumblr media
Willard told me in a 2012 L.A. Times interview that he didn’t think he was funny until he was an adult. “I always loved comedy growing up – Bob Hope, Red Skelton and Danny Kaye,” said Willard, who died in May at the age of 86.
Willard got a serious part in Tennessee Williams’ one-act in a summer theater group when he was in his 20s. “I was getting laughs on all the lines,” he noted. “The director got upset because the audiences were always laughing. I didn’t try to do it deliberately. Then I realized I would say things around people, and they would laugh. I didn’t mean to be funny. I have always been relaxed around comedy.”
Just as Dennehy, Willard kept working. In fact, he received an Emmy nomination posthumously for his hilarious turn as Ty Burrell’s goofball dad on ABC’s Modern Family. He told me he wished he could try to do more dramatic fare like in Clint Eastwood’s World War II drama Flags of Our Fathers (2006). Willard even called his agent to see if he could get a role in the movie. “Clint Eastwood’s people called back and said, ‘We love Fred, but we are afraid if he appeared on the screen, they might start to laugh.’’’
Jerry Stiller
Jerry Stiller was a real sweetie and also very thoughtful. He sent me a lovely thank you note when I interviewed him and his wife, Anne Meara, in the early 1990s. When I talked to him for his son Ben Stiller’s remake of THE HEARTBREAK KID (2007), Stiller sent me a lovely bouquet of flowers. Ditto in 2010 when I interviewed the couple for a Yahoo! Web series Stiller & Meara: A Show About Everything. I also received Christmas cards until Meara died in 2015.
Tumblr media
Baby boomers remember Stiller, who died at 92 in May, and Meara for their smart and sophisticated comedy act, in which the majority of the humor came from the fact that he was Jewish and she was born Irish Catholic. They recorded albums, were popular on the nightclub circuit and did The Ed Sullivan Show three dozen times. They split up their act when musical variety series went away.
Both were terrific dramatic actors. In fact, I saw Stiller in the 1984 Broadway production of Hurlyburly, David Rabe’s scathing look at Hollywood, and he did a 1997 production of Chekhov’s The Three Sisters. Of course, Stiller garnered even more success in his Emmy-nominated role as Frank Costanza, the caustic father of George (Jason Alexander) on NBC’s Seinfeld (1993-98) and was the best reason to watch CBS’ sitcom The King of Queens (1998-2007) as Kevin James’ acerbic father-in-law
But I most remember that 2010 interview where Stiller and Meara bantered back and forth much to my enjoyment. Here they talk about Ed Sullivan:
Anne: I never liked him.
Jerry: You are out of your mind. You never liked him?
Anne: He scared stuff out of me. I am talking about Mr. Sullivan himself. I wasn’t the only one. There were international favorites throwing up in the wings—singers and tenors and guys who spin plates. It was live. We were scared.
Jerry: Ed Sullivan brought us up to the level that we knew we never could get to – him standing there on the right side of the wings laughing, tears coming out of his eyes and then calling us over and saying, ‘You know, we got a lot of mail on that last show you did.’ I said, ‘From Catholic or Jewish people?’ He said, ‘The Lutherans.’”

It was not a fun time, that first year, especially when he did well. Resentful students tended to pick on him or mock him for what he’d done.
So he was all too happy when his father moved them to England after fourth year.
Hogwarts - Due to circumstances (and possibly due to the only empty bed found), Cyrus was placed in the same year as Eleanor Parkmoore (5th)

We’re married.
With Steve usually driving Danny's Camaro, that usually left the Silverado at home for him to use. He had a full day of running errands. Dropping off some things at the post office, do some grocery shopping, pick up any thing else that needed to be refilled or restocked.
Checking his watch, he made his way to the school and parked near the front of the entrance. Getting out of the truck, he leaned against it and waited.
The bell rang and soon the door burst open and all of the kids came spilling out. His eyes scanned the crowd and smiled when he saw their boy. They hugged and Freddie took his backpack before helping him into his seat in the truck.
They drove to the palace. Whether Steve was there or not, their son always finished most if not all of his homework there, and then when Steve finished for the day, they drove home together.
Tumblr media
After parking, he helped their son out and then lifted him onto his shoulders and made his way inside.
"Hi daddy! We're here to pick you up!"
Freddie chuckled as they made a beeline for Steve. Leaning in to kiss him first, before handing over their son who really wanted a hug, "He's got no homework. But the science fair starts next week, so we should brainstorm."
"Can we blow stuff up? For science!"
"No. Daddy owes me three date nights he still has to fulfill, so pick a safer subject."

A Legacy Left Behind - Chapter - 7 - When the Past Unfurls - Part I
En Route to Honolulu General
The McGarrett house was located only 18 miles away from the hospital and Danny could have made it in less than half an hour. But he drove cautiously, without making any sudden moves or speed changes as Steve suggested. He was keenly aware of the black SUV three cars behind him, diligently following him along as predicted. He had called the senior McGarrett on the way and told him that he was coming to pick him up. Danny could tell that the man had a few questions about this sudden change of plans, but had the good sense to keep them to himself for the time being. Danny figured that he probably had picked up on the tension radiated from him without Danny having to explain everything. He was a police Captain with many years of experience after all. Danny was thankful that the man accepted what he was saying without any arguments.
He turned into the visitor's parking area of Honolulu General and exited the Silverado. He took his time locking the truck and caught a glimpse of his tail doing the same a few parking spots away on the side mirror. Then he entered the hospital and took the elevator to the third floor.
Honolulu General - Room - 308
“I do not recommend this, Mr. McGarrett. I know you feel fine at the moment, but what happened to you was quite serious. I’m afraid you are making a mistake,”
Danny found a very young and agitated doctor fidgeting nervously while John resolutely signed an AMA discharge form on a clipboard when he entered room 308. His name tag identified him as Dr. Clarke. He looked more like a resident to Danny and he could see that McGarrett senior had no problem intimidating the kid-doctor in-training. Danny wished for a moment that the Captain hadn’t gone and done this because it would surely alert whoever was keeping watch. Then he saw the nurse flitting about the bedside and realized that since the man was connected to several monitors, only a doctor or a nurse could disconnect him without raising an alarm. So this was going to be the best way to get him out.
“Yes doc, I know what I’m doing, thanks a bunch,” John finished signing his check-out forms and got out of the bed. He looked relieved to be free from the medical paraphernalia he seemed to despise.
The doctor took the clipboard and left the room with the nurse, barely even glancing at Danny. The young doctor was not at all happy with what he had just had to do.
John wasted no time getting dressed and they were both out of the room within five minutes.
“You had better fill me in on what's going on soon, kid,” he hissed in Danny’s ear as they walked out to the elevator.
“I will, Cap. We just have to get out of here without causing a scene. I promise I’ll tell you what I can, then,” he replied as they got in through the door that had slid open.
Danny took a moment to scan the corridor on the third floor stretched before them, just before the elevator closed. Then he took his phone out to dial Sheppard.
Being in the elevator meant his call didn’t connect until it opened to let them out on the ground floor. Just as he was about to step out with the phone pressed to his ear, Danny saw the first glimpse of real trouble that was heading his way.
A big, intimidating man in dark clothes and a baggy jacket started to close in on them even before the elevator doors were fully open. He had a squiggly wire in one of his ears and the jacket had an ominous, bulging shape of a large gun hidden underneath it. Another guy in an identical get-up flanked him a few steps behind.
Danny cursed and back paddled, almost knocking Steve's dad over, who was following Danny to step out. He slammed at the buttons and kept his finger firmly pressed on the ‘close’ button. For an intense few seconds, he thought the bad guys just might make it inside, but then the elevator door closed with a ding, leaving them only a mere inches apart.
Danny knew they were going to split up, some taking the stairs while others took the elevator. He pushed a few buttons randomly and kept firmly pushing the door closed when the elevator insisted on opening on the 2nd, 7th, and 8th floors. By what felt like the sheer force of will, Danny finally managed to get the snail-paced elevator into the topmost floor of the building.
Once out, they both turned left and jogged towards the end of the corridor. Danny didn’t want to start moving quicker. Steve’s dad had just had a heart attack after all and he was pretty sure stressing the man out like this was hardly a good idea. But he knew that the alternative was much worse. So he kept up the light jog, stopping at intervals to check on the doors they were passing, looking for a place to get in and conceal themselves.
The spotty cell signal on the 16th floor finally relented and continued Danny’s call to Sheppard. He answered on the third ring.
“Danny, what’s wrong?”
Danny knew the Major had been fast asleep since it was past midnight back in Colorado. But he came alert almost instantly, noting the unusual time of the call.
“Listen, Shep, we are in trouble. I need you to arrange an emergency extraction right now. I have Steve’s dad with me and we are at the Honolulu General, top floor. Running around dodging bad guys to be precise,”
“One moment,”
Danny blessed the man as he heard Sheppard moving around to locate his radio without wasting any time. He figured that Sheppard must have heard the urgency in his tone. A few seconds later, he heard the Major calling over the emergency SGC channel.
“This is Sheppard, connect me to Odyssey, Colonel Carter,”
Danny and McGarrett passed the third door that seemed to be locked and kept moving. He was getting worried as it seemed they were running out of a corridor to keep going. Then he heard the Major talking to Colonel Carter.
“Colonel, it’s Sheppard. I’ve got Williams on the line requesting an emergency beam up. They left the day before when Steve got a call saying his dad was in the hospital,” Sheppard gave the bare bones of the situation to the Colonel.
Just then Dany heard the unmistakable ding of the elevator opening at the same time he heard the loud bang as someone bodily crashed into the doors of the emergency stairs, located to the left of the elevators. They had just run out of time as well.
“Now would be a good time for a bailout, Sheppard,” he screamed into the phone and ducked reflexively as the corridor they were in erupted in gunfire.
He kept hold of John McGarrett and started running towards the double doors at the end. He prayed that it would lead to restrooms on this level. Whoever had followed them up had lost their patience and seemed to have dropped all pretense at trying to stay hidden.
“Crap,” Danny heard Sheppard curse as he relayed the incident to the Colonel stationed in the Spaceship. “Ma’am, they are under fire,”
“Danny, they are locking onto you now. Grab Steve’s dad, ten seconds,” said Sheppard curtly and Danny pushed McGarrett in front of him as they continued their crouched run.
The gunfire erupted again, this time taking chips off the walls on both sides. Danny cursed as he swerved, keeping a firm hold on McGarrett. He knew the shooting was meant to scare them into surrendering. They’d need them alive if they needed them for any sort of leverage, but he wasn’t very keen on testing the theory.
Steve’s dad barreled through the doors with Danny firmly attached to his arm and Danny turned his head to see who was after them. The sneering face of Victor Hesse bringing his submachine gun to point right at him was the last thing he saw before the bright, white, light engulfed both of them, snatching them away to safety.
The Infirmary - SGC
“What in the blazes…” The loud curse erupting from McGarrett senior screeched to a halt as he took on the different surroundings that appeared out of nowhere by the courtesy of the fading white light and the buzzing.
Instead of the isolated hospital corridor that was starting to fill with bullets and ricochets, they were now in the SGC infirmary, covered in stark, grey walls, surrounded by the ticking and humming of various medical equipment.
In the few moments that took John McGarrett to come to terms with the fact that he wasn’t in Hawaii anymore, Dr. Lam had moved in and guided him to an empty examination area.
Sheppard came rushing in at that moment, still talking, presumably with the Colonel. He was in his sleep-wear, an old, grey t-shirt proclaiming USAF and a pair of loose, black sweatpants. His hair was a crazy mess and Danny could see the already fading pillow creases on his face.
“Yeah, Colonel, I’m with them now. We’re going to get moving soon,” he said to his earpiece and acknowledged whatever the Colonel said back. Then he finished the call and turned to Danny. “They’re tracking Steve. He’s still at home. Some kind of jamming is preventing them from locking onto his signal. We’re gonna go get him as soon as you finish telling me what the hell just happened,” Danny could see Sheppard was worried and was almost vibrating with the need to get moving.
“Yeah, that's exactly what I want to know as well, kid, you promised,” said McGarrett loudly from where he was sitting on the exam table. Dr. Lam was running a hand-held medical scanner on him. “And what’s this about Steve? Is he also in danger?” He was getting worried for his son after having heard Sheppard.
“Mr. McGarrett, please lie back down and let me finish your examination. I was informed you suffered a heart attack very recently, I can either do this while you comply or I can sedate you,” Lam’s no-nonsense tone had John McGarrett lying down as the doctor instructed, although grudgingly. He understood that this was not some young resident he could easily intimidate.
“There are some bad guys that want to capture him, Captain, and you don’t have the clearance to know the details. It’s the same bad guys that came after us in the hospital and we really need to move quickly. Why don’t you stay here and rest? We’ll go get Steve and he can fill you in then, as much as he can, at least,”
Danny felt bad at having to cut him off like this but he knew they had to get back as soon as possible. There was a damn good chance that those assholes were already attacking the McGarrett home. The signal jammer was preventing Steve from getting back up on time.
McGarrett senior looked from Danny to John and then back to Danny again. He wasn't a fool and he knew what just happened went beyond anything in his capacity as a police Captain. He sighed and nodded once. He just had to trust in Steve’s teammates to deal with whatever this was.
John could see the resemblance between Steve and his dad. He also had the same stubborn set to the jaw and the same interchangeable blue-green eyes. They also shared the same brown hair, although Captain McGarrett had a wavy and slightly unruly mop compared to Steve’s buzzcut. He resolved to properly introduce himself and talk to the Captain once they had retrieved Steve safely. Hopefully along with the group of fuckwits who thought attacking his SEAL was a great idea.
……….
“So, he gives me the keys and tells me to go grab his dad while he stays put playing bait,”
Danny had quickly passed the reporting to ranting territory as he strapped weapons onto his person. He had already changed into his BDUs while telling the rest of the team what happened. SG-11 was gearing up to go and tackle what was surely going to be a group of Goa’uld and brainwashed humans - most probably a highly trained group of humans. He and John had left Steve’s dad under Lam’s care and rushed to the changing rooms where Sheppard had already alerted the team to gather and gear up.
“I tried my best to talk him out of it, but sadly I have to admit that he had a point, considering they didn’t have any problem starting a shoot-out at a public place like that,” said Danny referring to the gunfire they had barely survived. Then he attached his MK-17 to his chest strap after checking the magazine. “There were only three of them at the hospital, so I’m guessing Steve’s got the rest,” He stuffed his tac vest pockets with a few extra magazines and slammed the locker door shut.
They had all finished gearing up and it had only taken less than six minutes. They were all tense and ready to go cause mayhem on the group of assholes that had threatened one of their own.
“Go for Sheppard,” Sheppard tapped his earpiece as he was hailed by Colonel Carter from Odyssey.
“There’s a 200-yard bubble surrounding the Commander’s house, jamming all electronic and radio signals. We’re going to beam you down at the edge of it and you’re going to have to move cautiously. We don’t know how many of them are there or if they’re still in the vicinity,” Carter reported tersely. Although she had addressed Sheppard, the entire team could follow the conversation over their SG-11 group channel.
“We’re ready, Colonel,” Sheppard replied and the rest of the team closed ranks around him, getting ready to beam, their faces set with grim determination.
McGarrett Home, Honolulu - Hawaii
It was nearing late evening in Hawaii and the surroundings were getting darker as the night fell rapidly. SG-11 materialized on the beach a few blocks away from the McGarrett house. They took off on a light jog and when they were almost there, Higgins, Cadman, and Kono took the small pathway to the right side leading to the front of the house. Adam, Vega, and Lorne jogged past the house to take the side entrance from the left while Sheppard, Danny, and Bates took the direct path across the lanai towards the back entrance.
Sheppard noticed the empty beer bottles laying on the beach near the deck chairs along with a few unopened ones in a cooler at the foot of the stool. He felt the sense of unease ratcheting up when he caught the sight of them as they passed the seating arrangement on Steve’s lanai. He knew the SEAL was a neat freak and it didn’t sit right with Sheppard that Steve left his backyard cluttered like this.
The first sign of trouble came in the form of an ugly black burn mark across the wooden door of the back entrance to the house. It looked as if an energy weapon or maybe even a plasma weapon had gone off. Then Kono came over their shared tac net with the report of the first casualty.
“Boss, we have a body here by the porch. It was behind a bush of Philodendrons and Higgins saw a foot sticking out. It’s a Jaffa with his throat open and he feels like he’s been dead for at least 30 minutes,”
Sheppard heard the admiration in her voice as she reported what they had just found. He agreed because he knew how hard it was to sneak up on a Jaffa. They’ve had quite a few training sessions with Teal’c, one-on-one and in groups. During most of those times, they had all ended up on their backs more than once, and the sessions had ended with all of them sporting collections of bruises.
Before Sheppard could say anything, Lorne came over the comms next.
“Same here Major, We’re inside the laundry area and there are two more bodies. These are human though, dead the same way. Commander’s been busy,”
“Keep your eyes open and tag all the bodies. We’ll let the Colonel know when we have the final count,” said Sheppard. “Keep your guard up everyone, we don’t know if anyone’s still here or if they have laid any traps,”
Although he was hoping for the enemies to still be around, he knew it was futile. It was starting to look like they had reached here a little late for the party. Sheppard took the lead and slowly pushed the back door with the burn mark open, revealing the kitchen. It didn’t bear any marks of a recent fight and he figured the enemies had probably only taken the front and the side entrances.
He nodded to Danny who signaled that he was going up the stairs and pointed at Bates to follow him. Then he slowly entered the lounge area of Steve’s dad’s house and met the three who came through the front entrance.
The lounge was a different story.
It looked like a bomb had gone off in there and Sheppard felt his stomach churn painfully at the sight that greeted him. It was obviously where the final confrontation must have taken place, he thought to himself, taking in the destruction.
The sofa that was once brown, stuffed, and comfy was now blown off in the middle. The three accompanying couches had also suffered similar fates. One lay scattered to pieces, one on its side and the other upside down. The front window had been blown off and the broken glass bits crunched loudly under their feet everywhere.
The nearby dining table and its wooden chairs hadn’t survived unscathed either. The table was broken into two pieces and the huge, still smoking scorch marks told the story of what happened to it. Two of the wooden chairs had also caught energy blasts and were shattered into pieces. The wooden racks attached to the walls, the bookshelves, and the other odd nick nacks were all in various states of destruction, all bearing telltale burn marks and some of them still glowing red and smoking. Most of the white-washed walls had ugly, black, burn marks and the entire scene reminded Sheppard of a bizarre painting done by an artist who was on the verge of losing his sanity.
Three more dead bodies lying haphazardly on the floor completed the picture. He moved to the closest one and saw that it was human. The body had caught a round squarely on the forehead and it told them that Steve had given up on stealth by the time he had eliminated this one. Then Cadman went around the upturned stool near the window and let out a soft gasp.
Sheppard closed the distance to her and for a second he wished he hadn’t. There was no dead body here but only a large puddle of dried blood, soaked into what had once been a white, fluffy foot rug.
He had to turn around then, to take a few deep breaths and try to get his suddenly erratic and galloping heart to slow down to its normal rhythm again. The copper smell was starting to make him feel vaguely nauseous and the painful tightness in his stomach had redoubled. His ears had acquired a faint ringing noise that was making everything else distant and distorted.
He was thankfully brought back to the present, away from the sensory overload, by a touch on his shoulder.
“He’s still alive, yeah? They didn’t go to all this trouble to end up killing him, that’d make no sense. Keep that in mind, boss,” Vega said softly.
Sheppard didn’t reply but nodded that he understood. He knew he had to keep his head in the game. He wasn’t going to be in any shape to help Steve if had to lose his shit at the first sight of blood. But it was still hard because his damn heart was falling apart and now was not the time to analyze his feelings towards the stubborn SEAL or what he had become to Sheppard.
“There are two more bodies upstairs, one in the bedroom and one in the guest room, both Jaffa,” Danny and Bates came down the stairs with a situation report on the rest of the McGarrett home.
“I also found this,” Bates pointed to a gray, shiny circular device. “This is a Goa’uld jammer, I’ve switched it off, we should have the comms with Odyssey now,” he said handing the device to Sheppard.
Danny had noticed the pale and drawn look on Sheppard and had gone around to stand near Cadman. Sheppard heard him starting to curse, seeing the evidence that their Commander might not be alright after all.
Sheppard contacted Colonel Carter who was handling the support for their mission.
“Colonel Carter, this Sheppard,”
“Go ahead Major, I see you have turned the jamming off. We’re scanning your area now,”
“They’re not here ma'am. I need you to ping Commander McGarrett’s sub-q transmitter, it looks like we got here just after they had left and it’s possible that they used the jammer to cover their beam-out,”
“We’ll get right on it, what else?”
“Umm, we have eight bodies tagged for beam up. Three Jaffas and five humans. You might need to beam them up before the local law enforcement gets here,” he knew it was a matter of time before one of the neighbors got curious and came to take a peek. Or even a colleague of the Captain might drop in and when they did, they were going to raise hell and call the police as soon as they could.
The few seconds of shocked silence that followed Sheppard’s report was more telling than anything the Colonel could have managed. He knew that Steve had put up one hell of a fight before the bad guys managed to drop him. The mild-mannered SEAL was a deadly force when provoked and Sheppard had only seen glimpses of what Steve was actually capable of, during their training sessions.
“Okay, stand by,” she came back over the line and within three seconds all the dead bodies disappeared in white lights and mild buzzing. “I’ll inform General O’Neill about the incident, he’s there with the Commander's dad right now. He’ll speak to him about the local authorities. Guess it comes in handy that he’s the head of Honolulu Police, hah?”
Sheppard had to agree that it would make things much easier. But he knew that Steve’s dad was not going to be happy at all about the condition of his house or what had happened to his son. He just hoped that the General would keep him calm until they got to the bottom of this.
“Do you have anything else to do there, Major, or are you ready to return?”
Sheppard looked around and took a final visual scan of the mayhem and destruction on what had once obviously been a cozy and loving space. Then pushed all the feelings and emotions that assaulted him at the realization firmly away to a corner of his mind and took a deep breath.
“We’re done here, ma'am," said Sheppard, his team closing around him. "We need to go where they have taken him as soon as possible. We’re ready to beam up now,” he informed the Colonel.
The Odyssey took them all away in a flash of bright light, leaving the heart-breaking scene behind.

Movie Review | Silverado (Kasdan, 1985)
Tumblr media
After a certain point, probably sometime in the '70s, westerns had become so scarce that a new one, by virtue of being made, functioned as a kind of statement. Certainly movies like Unforgiven and The Proposition are designed as reflections on the genre rather than mere exercises in the form (and this reflective quality extends to movies that traffic in western aesthetics, like No Country for Old Men). But even movies eager to bask in the simple, unpretentious pleasures of the genre come off like statements through omission, by virtue of being so rare. Silverado is one such film, and a pretty good one at that. This is a movie about good guys being good, bad guys being bad, spinning pistols and being crack shots, hopping on horses and riding into the sunset. If any of those things sound good to you, you're likely to have a good time with this anyway, but some astute casting goes a long way in making this work.
The heroes are played by Scott Glenn, Danny Glover, Kevin Kline and Kevin Costner, who are roughly given equal weighting, although Glenn is perhaps the most alpha. Glenn is perfect for westerns, with a face so leathery it might as well match his boots and so craggy it blends into the harsh landscape. (I've heard him described as weird looking, which is a bit unfair. Rugged is a better term, and if you squint, he's maybe even a little handsome.) He has a certain low key presence that suggests confidence without overplaying it, and is instantly credible as a man who's averse to violence but awful good at it if the need arises. He's also the coolest looking of the bunch, with a hairdo and wardrobe that look stylish and modern without compromising the period. (Black Friday is coming up and I can't promise I won't order some western wear as a result of this movie, although I suspect the short jacket he wears for much of the movie would not look flattering on me.) This was during the period when Glenn was being pushed as an action hero, and his work here fits nicely with The Challenge, a pleasingly excessive swordplay movie with a well used Toshiro Mifune, Man on Fire, a thriller whose artfulness better matches the samurai-inspired quality of its source novel than the more jagged Tony Scott adaptation, and Wild Geese II, the sober followup to the cheerful mercenary shoot 'em up. Glenn had also donned a cowboy hat in Urban Cowboy, where he stole the movie from John Travolta, and it's nice to him put on a hat and play a good guy this time around.
Glover is someone I always think of as very old, likely because his best known role includes a famous line of dialogue commenting on his age. This is the role I've seen him where he comes off the least geriatric, and like Glenn, he brings an unforced heroic quality (and his character is a better shot too). His introduction can remind viewers of the extremely lame ways modern movies will try to pander to righteous sensibilities by having a character face racial injustice (or some other kind) in an awkwardly written scene, but the one here works because of two indisputable facts: One, Glover is kind of cool in this, and two, watching him beat up racists is objectively enjoyable. Compared to him and Glenn, Kline comes off as relatively genteel, but in a way that creates tension between his desire for respectability, his violent past, and his need to pick up a gun again for the sake of justice. His might be considered the Henry Fonda role, and he has some nice, maybe romantic chemistry, with a saloon operator played by Linda Hunt. And in contrast to all of them, Costner is the most excitable, bringing some of the spontaneity and anarchic energy of a young Tom Hanks. I've usually seen him cast as an everyman, which can help ground a movie (like in the frantic, paranoid JFK), but it's nice to see him in a completely different mode. (In contrast to Glenn's costuming, Costner's is a little more flamboyant and goofy, in keeping with his character's youthful indiscretion.) If you like these actors, you'll get a lot out of the way the movie savours their distinct presences.
The strong casting carries over to the rest of the film as well, including the aforementioned Hunt, Brian Dennehy as the heavy, a purposefully incongruous Jeff Goldblum, and the list goes on. To borrow a phrase from the We Hate Movies podcast, this was made in an era when studio movies had deep casts (good, recognizable actors all the way down). This is directed by Lawrence Kasdan, and like Raiders of the Lost Ark, for which he wrote the screenplay, this is deeply nostalgic for the films of yore, although the innate significance of a western made in this era probably forces it to be more sprawling and quite a bit less terse than the B-westerns that would have inspired it. It's not as good as that movie, as Kasdan lacks Spielberg's immaculate action direction. (Consider a scene where Costner guns down two foes, one on each side. Kasdan chooses to cut when holding the shot would have made the punchline land better.) But at the same time, the baseline of craft in studio pictures at the time was a lot better than it is today, and on the whole this is quite enjoyable, especially if you like hanging out with the stars and spending time in this setting. I know I did.

It starts when his alarm doesn’t go off and in hindsight, that should have been his cue to call in sick, roll over, and go back to sleep. He doesn’t. Instead, he leaps out of bed, stubs his toe on the door frame and starts getting ready. His phone starts ringing while he’s brushing his teeth, half dressed and searching his room for the missing match for his sock.
“Where are you?” Steve asks after he answers through a mouthful of toothpaste.
“Alarm didn’t go off, I'll be there in ten.” He hangs up before Steve can say anything more and is driving towards Steve house a minute later.
Halfway to Steve’s the Camaro sputters to a stop on the side of the road and he curses a blue streak when he sees that he’s run out of gas. “This is why I need to drive my car, Steven!” he yells at the steering wheel and when he’s calmed enough to stop entertaining homicidal fantasies he calls Steve to bring him a can of gas.
Nothing bad happens for three hours. After dropping the Silverado back off at Steve’s and then stopping at a gas station they go to the office where he locks himself in the office and starts working on paperwork. By the time he’s finished his reports he’s almost in a good mood again. Of course, because this is his life, his computer crashes before he can save the completed reports.
“No. No, no, no. Chin!” he yells, grabbing his tablet and taking it to Chin, “Get them back. My computer crashed before I could save my reports.”
Chin takes his tablet and fiddles around with it but he already knows it’s hopeless before Chin looks up and says “Sorry, Brah.”
It takes him another two hours to rewrite his report, on a new tablet requisitioned from the HPD tech department, the entire time imagining taking the old tablet down to the shooting range and using the biggest gun HPD has on it. A knock on the door distracts him from wondering how long it would take him to destroy a computer if he were using an AR-15.
“You ready to go to lunch?” Steve asks him.
“You have no idea,” he saves his reports one more time for good measure and follows Steve out of the office.
“I’m just saying, call it superstition, but this day is out to get me,” he tells Steve as they get out of the car at his favorite deli.
“The day is not out to get you. Friday the 13th is just another Friday,” Steve says with a roll of his eyes, “You go ahead, I think my phone fell out of my pocket,” he pats down his front pockets and starts back to the car.
“Make sure your wallet didn’t fall out too!” he yells back, entering the deli and walking right into a robbery. The bell above the door alerts the kid robbing the place to his presence and he whips around, pointing a pistol square at his chest. "P-put your hands up," the kid tells him, his voice shaking just as much as his hands.
"It's okay, I'm not gonna do anything," he tells the kid, adopting a relaxed pose and keeping his hands where they are because they're the only thing keeping his gun and badge out of sight.
"Put your hands up!" the kid yells desperately, waving the gun around.
"Okay! Just don't do anything, I don't want any trouble," he says as he slowly raises his hands.
He watches as the kids face turns from nervous to scared as soon as he sees the gun and he knows that his day is about to get a whole lot worse, "I told you not to call the police!" The kid yells, waving the gun at the guy and girl quivering behind the counter.
"They didn't call anyone!" Danny yells, getting the robbers attention back to him, "I just wanted a pastrami on rye, I come here for lunch all the time."
The kid still has his gun pointed at him and Danny can see his finger on the trigger. He's still waiting for the kid to say something when the bell above the door rings and the kid shoots. He can hear screaming and then yelling but it's all unintelligible to him, barely audible over the sound of his own heartbeat pounding in his ears. Steve comes into view, looking worried and saying something to him but he can't hear what. He tries to focus on Steve's face, try and make out what he's saying but everything goes black.
When he wakes he can feel a hand in his and opens his eyes to see that it’s Steve’s hand he’s holding. He croaks out a rough sounding hey to get Steve’s attention and as soon as he sees he’s awake Steve surges towards him, breathing out his name before grabbing him and kissing him hard. “Sorry,” Steve apologizes, looking contrite and pulling away, but Danny reaches out and grabs the collar of his shirt to stop him before he can get too far.
“Don’t be sorry. That’s the only good thing that’s happened to me all day,” he pulls Steve back down and kisses the surprised look off of his face. He deepens the kiss when Steve moans and wrapS a hand around the back of Steve’s neck to keep him close, only letting him go when his doctor clears his throat to get their attention.
