Welcome home- Matt Casey x Darden!Sister
Authors note: Sorry that it’s been so long since I posted!!! It’s been a crazy few weeks and I honestly just haven’t had the motivation. This is a continuation to a story I wrote a while ago containing these two love birds.
Summary: Kelly and Stella finally bring you back home.
Warnings: NONE; possible spoilers maybe.
———————
You and Matt Casey kept your relationship going even through your move to Portland to be with your nephews, the Darden boys. When Matt had the weekend off, he would often fly over to Portland and help you out with whatever you needed. Sometimes, all you needed was him.
About three years later, Stella called you and told you about her engagement to Kelly. You were thrilled. You always knew that they would get married. You never knew Kelly to love someone and to be so devoted to them like he was to Stella Kidd. That woman had Kelly Severide wrapped around her finger.
When you got a call from Matt later on in the night, you were surprised to find that this FaceTime was filled with many familiar faces.
“Hey Darden!” Kelly yelled over Matt’s shoulder.
Clamoring could be heard as Jay Halstead, Mouch, Hermann, Sylvie, and a few others from intelligence and 51 tried to get in the frame to say hi. You giggled as you watched Kelly take Jay in a headlock and demand your attention. Everyone was clearly VERY drunk.
Matt chuckled as he watched the scene unfold on his end, but most of his attention was on you and your giggling self. He has never heard a sound more beautiful than your laugh or seen anything brighter than your smile.
Once Matt was able to break away, he stepped outside and sat at a picnic table far from the outdoor bar. He stared at you for a moment as you wrote something down, biting your lower lip in concentration. All he wanted in that moment was to rub the knots, that he knew were on your shoulders from stress, away and catch your bottom lip in his.
You noticed him staring after a minute or two and immediately blushed, hiding behind the sleeves of the hoodie Matt left you the last time he came out to Portland. “What?” You giggled, pushing your reading glasses up while you hid behind your hands.
Matt shook his head and chuckled. “Nothing. Nothing. You are just too damn adorable.” Matt smiled shyly at being caught, but he was also doing his best to hide what you were doing to him just by being you. “God. I miss you.” Matt breathed, leaning against the picnic table and setting his phone against the napkin dispenser to rub his hands together in an effort to warm them back up.
You smiled sweetly back at him. “I miss you too honey.” You whispered, flopping back into your pillows. “Sooooo, did Kelly ask you to be his best man?” You asked, wiggling your eyebrows.
Matt chuckled, missing your antics. “Of course he did! Who else would be able to deal with Groomzilla?!” Matt joked, causing you to burst out laughing.
“True. True.” You said, struggling to catch your breath. “Stella asked me to be a bridesmaid, but I don’t know what things will look like around the time of the wedding, so I had to decline.” You explained, pouting slightly.
Matt hummed. “Well, I’m sure it’ll all work out. We have time.”
You nodded in thought before flipping onto your side and settling in for the night. You placed your phone on its upright charging port as you stared at Matt. “If you can, leave me on. It’ll be like I’m part of the fun.” You whispered, hiding a yawn behind your sleeve.
Matt knew you wouldn’t last much longer, so he easily agreed, standing up and carrying his phone around as he re-entered the crowded bar filled with your family.
———————
The day was here. Stella and Kelly were finally getting married. As far as Matt knew, you had to stay in Portland because Ben got himself into some trouble. Matt was kinda thankful for you not being here in this moment as everything seemed to be falling apart and he just knew you would be frantically trying to fix everything if you were here.
“Hey guys! A party boat just opened up and we can have the wedding there!” Cruz yelled from halfway down the block.
The wedding party all went running, eager to get there and get everything arranged. Once they arrived, Matt was pleasantly surprised and confused with how nicely the boat was decorated in line with Kelly and Stella’s wedding theme. That was, until you popped up behind him.
“Hey handsome.” You whispered, wrapping your arms loosely around his waist.
He knew those hands and that voice anywhere. He immediately turned in your arms and lifted you into his own, twirling you around. “Oh my God!” Matt yelled, chuckling as he spun you around. Once he sat you down, he swooped in to kiss you deeply. He only pulled back when he was desperately in need of air. “Wha- how?!” Matt asked, still trying to understand how you were here.
“Welllll.” You drawled out, leaning back slightly to get a better look at him. “I was really busy moving my stuff back into your apartment while you were at Kelly’s last night. Stella held her bachelorette party there while we unpacked my stuff.” You smiled, proud to have pulled one over on him.
Matt gawked at you, absolutely speechless.
“Then, when I went to start decorating this morning, I realized that the church was double booked and had this set up. Everyone helped get you here. We figured you deserved some good news after the tough year you’ve had.” You explained, smiling as everyone around you agreed.
“Plus, this is like the best wedding gift EVER. THE BAND IS BACK TOGETHER!” Stella yelled, pumping her fist in the air.
Everyone chuckled and immediately agreed.
Matt wrapped his arms tighter around your waist, burying his face in your hair. After a few moments, Matt pulled back and kissed you on the forehead before shouting, “LETS GET KIDD AND SEVERIDE HITCHED!”
As everyone began to walk to their seats or to their places, Matt pulled you into his side and gave you one more kiss. “Welcome home baby.”
———————
At the reception, Matt has you sitting in his lap with his arms wrapped around you. “So, where are Griffin and Ben?” Matt asked, kissing the side of your head.
“So, here’s the thing.” You began, turning in his lap to look Matt in the eyes. “Griffin got accepted into Northwestern and Ben was okay with moving home with you, so I brought Ben with me and Griffin is staying on campus.” You explained, toying with your necklace as you spoke.
“Wait, so Ben is here?!” Matt asked, immediately ecstatic.
You chuckled, calming down now that the biggest secret was out. “Yeah. Griffin is at the apartment with him now. He will be staying for the night before going back to his dorm so that we can have the night out. He expects Uncle Matt’s famous eggs in a basket tomorrow morning.” You chuckle, shaking your head at the fact that Griffin remembered his favorite meal that Matt made him as a kid.
Matt beamed, kissing you on the temple. “He can have anything he wants.” Matt assured, smiling proudly at the fact that Griffin remembered things from their time together. For the first time since you left, Matt was finally content.

“Happy Birthday”
kelly severide x platonic fem!reader, andy darden x sister!reader (idk if i’m using the exclamation points right sorry guys)
a/n: i thought this would be cute, i don’t know if im going to do very many love interest kelly stories bc i rlly just see him as a big brother figure so majority will prob be y/n under platonic and sibling pov’s. I also figured I should write for someone other than Otis for once, but dw those are still coming ;)🤎
^^ continuation: idk if his birthday is correct I honestly did one google search and couldn’t find anything so i just made one up because i feel like he’s a capricorn LOL. also i basically completely made this timeline up because i don’t know if the seasons qualify as one whole year so im gonna say season 6 is 6 years after Andy’s death im so sorry if im wrong haha.
warnings: angst, fluffy, swearing, alcohol, not proofread so anything i missed?
Tumblr media
Y/N’s POV:
January 3rd, six and half years after Andy’s death and everyday still feels the same without him, dull and empty. I’ve worked through it though, just trying to take life one day at a time. The pain began to feel less prominent as I’ve learned to live with it. But today is my birthday. Which is a never ending reminder of who I don’t have with me which is Andy. Another reminder is that today is also Kelly’s birthday, so today feels like pouring acid salt into a cut so deep I can see bone.
Kelly and Andy were best friends growing up, and since Andy was friends with Kelly, I was friends with Kelly. They always brought me along everywhere with them, even when they didn’t want or have to. It was funny growing up because they would pretend to be firefighters and talk about how they were going to save the city one burning building at a time, and me being the 6 year old I was when I started playing with them, I decided that being a paramedic would be easier. You know because fighting fires is only a man’s job according to 6 year old me. So when Kelly and Andy were off to the academy to fight fires, I was off to a school of my own to help them when they get hurt. Now after what felt like a hundred years i’d finished becoming a PIC and craved more in life. So I met up with both Andy and Kelly and told them I was also going to go to the academy to become a firefighter. Andy was thrilled, he talked about how I could continue working at 51 with both of them and it would be amazing. Kelly however did not feel the same. He thought I was making a mistake, so when I went to school and finally graduated, Andy died. This only made me more determined to finish out his legacy and finish the job he wasn’t able to do. 5 years later I was a lieutenant at firehouse 90 since I could no longer bare the pain of working with Kelly anymore, and I was offered a job to go fight wildfires in California. Now a year and a half later I’m back.
I was two years younger than my two older brothers even if only one of them was really blood related. Kelly and I’s birthday landed on the same day though and that made Andy go all out every single year. So yeah, it truly sucked when Andy died and the extravagant parties, and food, and people died along with him too. Today marks 6 and half years of our brother being gone and Kelly and I haven’t spent this day together since. I miss him, I really do but it hurt so much without Andy. Our birthday was just another reminder of him being gone. But now 6 years later I’ve finally decided to put my big girl pants on and celebrate with him.
Kelly was never a birthday boy. He hated all of the attention and gifts, and if it weren’t for me at least sending him a “happy birthday ❤️” text every year to fill the radio silence every other 364 days of the year, he probably would’ve forgotten that he has a birthday at all. But today that will change.
Since Kelly is still a firefighter at house 51 and that happens to be the house i’m transferring to now that i’m back in Chicago, I decided I would surprise Kelly. It’s the least I could do since we practically haven’t spoken in almost 7 years.
One week prior, Third Person POV:
“In exactly one week we will have a female transfer on squad 3. She’s been in California for the last year in the wildfire division of L.A. You guys will welcome her with open arms accepting her back into the 51 family. It’s been a rough year, wildfires are very different from the typical structure fires we see almost everyday. You will be patient, and understanding, and treat her with never ending respect. The only reason she isn’t a superior officer to the lot of you is because she declined the offer…That’s all. You’re dismissed.” After Boden makes his announcement almost the whole house is confused due to the nuclear bomb he basically just dropped on them.
“Um what?” Otis says out probably the most confused of them all.
“A female on Squad 3? Who is she the she-hulk?” Cruz adds on with a joke no one laughed at.
“Do you have a problem with that Cruz?” Boden asks furious at his blatant sexism.
“No sir.” He says in response and sits lower in his chair.
“I’m just confused that we don’t even know who this chick’s name and she gets to waltz in here like she owns the place. How does Severide feel about this?” Someone from the back asks with each word just pissing Boden off even more.
“For your information, she worked at house 51 for 7 years as the PIC then transferred to house 90 to become a working firefighter. After two years of working on Truck, she quickly became Lieutenant, then after three years she was offered a position in California. So yes, she does get to ‘waltz in here and act like she owns the place’. Now for your information her name is Y/N Darden and I don’t give a damn how Severide feels because it’s my goddamn house and what I say goes!” Boden says with complete rage which shut the rest of them up.
After what felt like an eternity of awkward silence Casey spoke up, “She’s family Chief and we’ll treat her as such, we won’t let you down.” He says half serious to scare the rest of the men and women in the room, and half excited because he gets to see you again. Luckily for your surprise to work out, Severide wasn’t on shift that day.
Present Day, Third Person POV:
You stood nervously outside the conference room awaiting your grand entrance to surprise Kelly. As the seconds count down to break the six year technical no contact with Severide, the nauseous feeling in your stomach continues to rise. God you’ve missed him.
“Now please welcome your new Squad 3 member…” You hear Boden’s prominent voice say as he approaches the door to open it for you, “Y/N Darden.” He finishes as you walk through the door and immediately all of the old faces that you’ve missed from your past become familiar again. You can only spot a few new faces, but before you fully process that your eyes land on Kelly’s in the back.
You watch as his face morphs from complete shock and excitement to anger and disappointment. Before you get a chance to say anything though he speaks up.
“What the hell is she doing here!?” He shouts at Boden which immediately pisses him off.
“Severide, calm down! You can either welcome your new team member as her lieutenant professionally, or you can walk out and talk to me privately in my office. We’re not causing a scene in front of my men and women right now.” He says patiently like he’s talking to a toddler throwing a tantrum.
“You know…this is bullshit! Hell no!” Severide shouts once again with all eyes in the room on him he waits a few seconds before he approaches you.
“You need to leave.” Is all he says as he walks out the conference room doors and you’re now standing there in the front of the room embarrassed as ever. Your face would be emotionless if there wasn’t tears falling down it so you quickly wipe them and mutter something along the lines of “this was a mistake” as you rush out of the room.
Boden stands there angry and everyone else doesn’t know what to do. Before anyone does anything though, Casey quickly goes to follow you and tells Boden he’ll handle it.
“Um…as for the rest of you, you’re dismissed.” He says walking out slowly while rubbing his jaw. This was going to be a long day.
“Hey Y/N, wait up!” Casey yells as he runs after you, you stop dead in your tracks at his voice and you turn around now showing your red and puffy face.
“Hey c’mere.” He says as he pulls you into a hug causing you cry a little harder, “Hey, shh, the birthday girl shouldn’t be crying on her special day, okay?” He says as he pulls you away from his chest and wipes your tears himself.
Surprised he remembered your birthday, your hands rest on his biceps as he does so and you sniffle and chuckle as he still treats you like a little sister. God you’ve missed him. And everyone here for that matter.
A little while later Casey brought you to his office so you guys could have a safe place to talk and not be overheard by the others. “I don’t know why I thought he would be happy to see me…” You say as you sip some hot cocoa. It was your favorite winter beverage and since it was your birthday he made you a cup of his famous recipe. Matt always made the best cocoa.
“I wouldn’t worry too much about it. He’ll come around, it’s a tough day and seeing you unexpectedly probably added onto that. Not saying that you’re the cause but just the reminder you know?” Matt says leaning back in his desk chair and tapping his pen on the top of his desk you give him an unsure smile showing you understand what he said.
5 hours into your first shift back at 51 it has definitely not gone the way you were expecting. From the blow up this morning and a winter weather advisory deeming it unsafe for you guys to attend to non life threatening emergent calls you guys were stuck at the house. Not that there was a lot to do, it’s just despite being locked in a building with Kelly, you have no idea where he’s gone.
Sitting around the table in the common room you were telling stories about some wildfire calls in California catching up with the others.
“So there I was dangling out the side of the Helicopter hanging on with one hand over about 30 acres of straight fire, I had barely any grip but my chief advising that call had figured out how to stabilize the helicopter with resources around him so he could get 30 free seconds to help me back in. It was probably the most scary and exhilarating feeling of my whole existence-“ You say but trailing off as someone caught your attention out of the corner of your eye you finally see Kelly.
“Wow! That’s actually insane Y/N i’m glad you’re okay-“ Otis said a little too intrigued in ur story, but you cut him off as you get up to talk to Severide. “Sorry excuse me Otto, I’ll be right back.” You say running off towards Kelly.
“Yeah Otto, she’ll be right back!” Cruz says dying laughing at you not knowing his name.
“There is no way she doesn’t know who I am or my name! We worked together for four years, I mean yeah I was only a candidate but still!” He says genuinely hurt you don’t fully know who he is when he’s had a giant crush on you for years now.
“Hey Kelly wait up!” You shout following him to his office.
“Go away.” Is all he says before shutting the door in your face.
“No! Please can you just hear me out?”
“Go away Y/N!” He yells again but this time louder with his voice cracking.
“Let me in Kelly. Please.” You finally beg rattling the now locked door handle.
Ignoring you he shuts his blinds which only causes you to be more stubborn. Sitting outside of his not-so-soundproof office you start annoyingly knocking on his glass door.
After about 3 minutes of this he opens the door. “You have 5 minutes.” He says surprising you so you jump to your feet and follow him inside.
You sit on his bed and don’t exactly know where to start your explanation so the two of you just sit in awkward tension for about 30 seconds of your 5 minutes.
“I meant it Y/N you only have 5 minutes. Start talking.” he says breaking the silence and starting a real timer at which you roll your eyes.
“Happy birthday.” You mutter watching his eyes go wide.
“What!? You said start talking so I did. I’m paying my respects to my lieutenant!” You raise your voice a bit at his aggression defending your actions.
Still met with silence you sigh and begin explaining, “I only had a year contract in California. I was always planning on coming back to Chicago.” You first admit trying to clear the air unsure if he was mad that you went there, or for any other reason.
“I’m sorry if this was a mistake, I just thought it would be nice to see you again.” You admit starting to feel guilty.
“You know what would’ve been nice? A goodbye. A notice. Even a text just saying, ‘Hey I’m going to California for the next year, see you when I get back!’ Or maybe before that a goodbye saying you’re leaving 51 and transferring to 90, that would’ve been nice. Not just showing up to work a week after your best friend died and finding out the only tie you still had to him left too!” He shouts at you almost triggering your waterworks again, but you can see he definitely triggered some of his own.
“You know what Kelly, I get that, and i’m sorry!” You shout back but taking a deep breath before continuing. “I’m sorry I didn’t say goodbye, you didn’t deserve that. I’m sorry your bestfriend died. You didn’t deserve that, but I want you to know, my fucking brother died! and I didn’t deserve that! I’m sorry you were just another reminder of what I didn’t have and I couldn’t even think about you without wanting to throw up! You know you two were so similar? Basically the exact same person, but when he died, that part of you died too. He died in all of us, so it’s not like I just lost him! I lost both of you and it broke my fucking heart. I love you Kelly, I truly do, but please don’t blame me when I had to take the measures to fix me before I could be there for you. You weren’t-aren’t the same person you were before and neither am I! But I’m back now, ready to start again, and be there for you if you need me, if you are too.” You finally finish your rant and see the tears falling down Kelly’s face as yours once did only a few hours ago. He sniffles a little bit leaving you on heard so you get up to leave but he grabs your hand and points for you to sit back down.
“I won’t stay if you don’t want me too. I can leave at the end of shift and go back to 90 just say the word that you don’t want me on your squad.”
“I don’t want you to leave, Y/N. But I can’t be responsible if you end up dying too…” Kelly finally breaks down after getting the last sentence out and you stand up pulling him into a hug.
Pulling him away from you and cradling his face in your hands you wipe his tears just as Matt did for you earlier and you say, “Kelly, I won’t die. and if I do it won’t be your fault, just like Andy’s death wasn’t your fault either. It wasn’t anyone’s, it was his stupid mistake for not listening to a confirmed order before going in. I know it’s bad of me to blame the dead for his death, but it’s true and he can cry about it from his grave if he has an issue.” You chuckle at the last sentence as does Kelly and you both smile.
“You’re just gonna have to trust me Severide, okay?”
“Okay.” He whispers back and places a kiss to your forehead then resting his forehead of yours. God it was nice to have your brother back.
At the end of shift Kelly brings you to Molly’s where Herrmann had set up a surprise party for the both of you. It was a good night. After a few drinks and being separated from Severide he finally comes and talks to you again.
“Hey there’s the birthday boy!” You greet Kelly with a hug and kiss on the cheek.
“Hey, um, Otis just told me earlier on shift you called him Otto?” He says dying laughing.
“Yeah and?” You say genuinely confused?
“That’s not his name! It’s Otis!?” Kelly continues laughing at how you could’ve screwed that up and your jaw drops.
“You’re kidding!” You say feeling horrible now.
“No i’m not! You worked with that kid for four years before you transferred how did you fuck it up that bad!” Kelly exclaims as the both of you are dying laughing.
“Omg, I feel so bad! Do you think he’d forgive me?” You say looking around searching for where he was only to find him already staring at you.
Kelly looks in his direction then looks at you and nods his head yes. “Something tells me he’d forgive you.” he says knowing about his love struck elevator guy.

Things were obviously tuff after my brother Andy's death. Heather my sister in law got a DUI and ended up in prison for 15 months. During that time I looked after hers and my brothers kids, when she was released Heather took Griffin and Ben to live away in Florida. She suddenly stoped phoning me and anytime I would phone her I was cut off. Eventually I was blocked. This was heard on me because all I wanted was to speak to my nephews. Matt and Gabby got divorced then I started dating Matt.
Then one day Griffin appeared on mine and Matts doorstep telling us how his mom keeps moving him around and now is in prison again. Of course after a lengthy conversation Matt and I made the decision that I'd moved in with Griffin, Ben and Heather until I know that she can cope again.
I was gone for a long time, but Matt and I made it work doing long distance. He would also come and visit me any time he could, but it's tough. And unfortunately Heather kept getting into trouble, so Matt suggests that the kids just move in with him and I, that way Heather can sort herself out and the kids would have a stable environment. Plus with Gabby leaving I was offered to become PIC of ambo 61. I'm not just coming home because of that, it's also my best friend Kelly's wedding.
I walk into the fire house holding on to my nephews hands hoping to surprise everyone. Of course Matt and Kelly know I'm coming home, but they think my flight gets in later
"Geeze, thought I'd at least get some banners for my return"
"Babe?" Matt looks over a little shocked "thought I was picking you and the kids up later"
"Eh flight changed"
"No it didn't you said you wanted to surprise everyone"
"Thanks Ben"
"YN. It's good to have you back" Herrmann pulls me into a hug which is followed by everyone else
"YN thank you for coming back for the wedding"
"Well that's not the only reason I'm back" I say replying to Kelly
"Well don't leave us all waiting" Brett encourages
"Well I'm coming back permanently, Ben, Griffin and I. I'm gonna be the PIC of ambo 61 again"
"Yes!" Gallo fist bumps the air
"Bless our saviour"
"Oh thank god" Brett hugs me again
"What did I miss?" I chuckle
"The person who replaced you temporarily, well she's not the nicest"
"Emma just creates a lot of drama" Gallo replies for Capp
"She's been after the PIC job since you left"
"Oh well don't worry about her anymore. I'm back next shift"
"Perfect" Brett once again hugs me tight
"Right we best get you guys fed. You hungry?" Kelly asks me and the kids
"I'm starving" I reply chuckling. The kids follow Kelly to the kitchen while I get stopped by my very handsome boyfriend
"Hey"
"Hi" I smile up at him "don't be to mad at me for trying to surprise you"
"Just glad your here and staying" he places his hands on either side of my face and presses a kiss against my lips
"Oh Errm sorry to interrupt" we break apart and see Emma "was just coming to collect my things"
"No hard feelings right?"
"No course not" she smiles but I can see how fake it is
"Come on let's grab something to eat" Matt wraps his arm around my shoulders and we head to the kitchen
"If we had known you were coming back we would have made a nice spread"
"It's ok. Don't worry about it"
"Engine 51, Truck 81, Squad 3 , ambo 61. Structure fire 336 Arlington"
"I'll see you guys later. Matt I'll see you at home"
"Home. I like the sound of that" I give him a peck before he shoots off
"Ok let's get you guys home hey?"
On the way home the taxi driver starts to drive passed where the fire. I notice Emma outside getting shouted at, but no Matt, Stella or Sylvie
"Hey can you stop a minute?" I ask and get out
"Hey. Boden things ok? Where's Brett?"
"Inside. Woman's giving birth and Jacobs left her"
"Chief send me in?"
"What. You don't start till...."
"I know but if someone's giving birth up there Brett's gonna need help, please?"
"Ok go"
"Ok boys I want you to stand over there with Chief Boden. Ok don't leave his side"
"Ok" the boys leave the car while I run into the burning building
"Brett? Kidd? Casey?" I shout running up some stairs
"YN?" I hear Brett yell and follow her voice
"Holy shit" I notice the room on fire
"She's crowning" Brett tells me "YN give me the bulb suction" I hand her what she needs while I tend to her wound on her shoulder "ok big push" Brett says. Thankfully we hear crying from the baby
"Ok Kidd Casey carry her out. Brett you got the baby?"
"Yeah"
"Ok when we have them in the ambo I want to put oxygen on the baby just in case as well as the mother. Let's go" I grab the bag and follow the others out. When we get outside to safety I hear Emma getting told to clean out her locker
"Welcome home YN" Brett smiles giving me a side hug once the baby was in the ambo having oxygen thanks to other paramedics that just arrived.
We arrive back at the firehouse, everyone excited for my return when I see Gabby. My old best friend
"Hey" she smiles and Matt and I
"Hi Gabby"
"Well this is awkward" Mouch mumbles earning a nudge from Gallo
"I'm not here to cause drama. Just here for the wedding"
"Errm it's good to see you Gabby. Matt I'm gonna take the kids home. I'll see you later" I give him a kiss and leave the firehouse feeling a little uncomfortable about Matts ex being here. Yes we were once friends and yes ok I'm the bitch that dated her best friends ex husband, but doesn't mean that I'm not a little worried.

“Julia, say Bah-en,” the youngest Darden boy tries to coax his younger sister.
Ben and Griffin are sitting cross-legged on opposite sides of each other on a blanket they placed down on the carpet while Julia sits in the middle of them. Infant toys are scattered all around them.
Tonight, was a family fun night, a time to enjoy each other’s company in their new home. The fireplace is crackling, a family friendly movie is playing on their TV and on the coffee table is an arrangement of all the junk food Sylvie could find. She had selected a movie for them to watch together but their attention soon shifted to their three kids in the middle of the living room.
“No way!” the eldest Darden refutes. He holds up a small teddy bear, shaking it back and forth, grabbing his sister’s attention. “Your first word is going to be Griffin. Now say, Gri-fin.”
Matt and Sylvie look and smile at one another. They are sitting on the couch watching the three kids play with one another. Matt has his arm wrapped around Sylvie’s shoulder and she snuggled comfortably into his side. A few weeks ago, Julia began muttering words, and it excited the family that the youngest member could soon be talking.
“Bah-en!”
“GRI-fin!”
Both brothers say back and forth trying to vie for their sister’s attention. Julia looks between them but turns her attention to all the toys around her. She picks up one and begins waving it above her head.
“I think her first word is going to be ‘Dada’,” Matt whispers into Sylvie’s ear.
Sylvie places her hand on Matt’s chest and lifts herself up from her position. “Oh yeah?”
“Yeah, I mean she likes my cuddles the best,” Matt boldly claims giving her a sly smirk. “You want to be on it?”
“Bring it on, Casey!” Sylvie teases. “Julia’s first words are going to be ‘Mama’!”
Griffin turns his attention to his parents as soon as the words ‘bet’ were uttered and he wants to join in on the action, “Julia has a better chance of saying mine or Ben’s name before either of yours!”
Sylvie feigns shock before playfully tossing a throw pillow at Griffin.
“Alright. Losers have cooking and laundry duty for two weeks! And the winner gets dinner of their choice at their favorite restaurant,” Sylvie proclaims from the couch. She looks at her three boys and they all agree to her terms.
Both Matt and Sylvie join their children on the floor, each of them trying to get Julia to say their names.
Julia turns attention to the TV screen just as one of the characters says, “Mama.” She throws down the toy that she is holding and points to Sylvie and repeats, "Ma-ma!"
Sylvie picks up her daughter and smothers her chubby cheeks with kisses.
“That’s right love, I’m Mama!” She turns her head and looks at her boys before declaring. “I’m thinking of an expensive steak dinner!”

I want to ask you about something : I love Stellaride’s wedding, it was sweet, a little bit chaotic and quite perfect, but there is one thing that still bothers me. Katie. I mean, I know that with covid restrictions they probably couldn’t have her on set, I really get it but at least they could mentioned her. Like, Stella telling Kelly that it’s so bad that his sister couldn’t make it to their wedding and him saying ‘she couldn’t leave work but she’s sending all the best’. One minute and I’ll be glad! Because she’s his sister, she should be with him on that day and if they couldn’t bring her, they definitely shouldn’t forget about her and never mentioned her once. Am I the only one who thinks that?
The one Chicago writers are terrible at remembering their own storylines. It wasn't just Katie with the stellaride wedding.
Casey's mom gets out of prison in season one and is never mentioned again (I don't even think when Casey's uncle died and left him a watch, though his sister gets brought back after being forgotten for basically the entire series).
Alvin had another daughter Michelle get introduced in season three but after a few episodes she's gone and never mentioned again. Never meets Lexi. Doesn't go to his funeral. Nothing.
Dr. Charles abandoned Robin and got remarried at some point, had another daughter (Anna) then stopped showing up for Anna when Robin was around. I think they brought her back in season 6 for a few episodes but it was awkward and weird.
Boden has an ex-stepson, James, who he supposedly loves and still considers family, but we hear about and see him once and then never again.
Griffin and Ben Darden were, iirc, 10 and 8 in the first season, so when the characters came back they should have been 20 and 18, but the writers decided to make them minors instead for some reason.
Voight has a grandson. No idea what happened to him after Justin Voight was killed.
Kevin Atwater has multiple younger siblings. We only ever see two on screen Vinessa and Jordan, but in the first season it's implied that there's more (I can't recall the specific episode, but Kevin asks Vinessa to get her brothers and sisters or something) and they're literally never mentioned again.
Hailey's dad was in the hospital. Never mentioned again.
Jay committed a war crime apparently. After that episode was over its like nothing was ever said.
Connor implies that his dad took part in his mom's death and suggests it wasn't a suicide... Not brought up ever again after that.
Will violated the DNRs of two women. It's been almost completely forgotten and he never faced actual consequences in the show (insurance hikes don't count), irl he'd be in prison.
Honestly I could go on.
I have come to the conclusion that the one Chicago writers are not very good at their jobs.
They also use the same first name more than once... A lot.
Violet Casey (Matt's niece) and Violet Mikami (paramedic at 51)
Vinessa Atwater (Kevin's sister) and Vanessa Rojas (officer who used to work in intelligence)
There's more but I can't remember at the top of my head and I think you get the point.

I Know Your Heart (4) Mon Amour | Chicago Fire Fanfic
Summary: A chance encounter with the family of the late Andrew Darden puts many things into perspective for Kelly in a way that causes him to lash out. On an emergency call at a construction site, Kelly and Becker come face to face with time itself.
Warnings: general Chicago Fire warnings apply. Read at your own discretion.
A/N: episode 2 is one of my favourites because of everything it forces Kelly to confront, so the next few parts are from his point of view. This is straight-up sadness. I’m sorry. Edited 14th November 2022.

For Kelly Severide, the days following the Franklin Street building fire were rough. He wrestled, day and night, with memories of losing Andy, and almost losing Becker. Though the two situations were different, he couldn't help wanting to still lay blame on the Truck lieutenant's shoulders. If he had truly been watching out for Andy, if he hadn't been so stubborn and bullheaded with his sister, neither instance would have occurred. At least, Kelly reminded himself sadly, Becker Casey lived to follow him through hell another day. Not all was lost.
He arose a bit earlier the following day and planned to head for coffee before Becker made her return to work. He volunteered to take a few days off and be with her during the recovery period for her arm, but she wouldn't hear of it. “A couple of days without me won't kill you, Severide.” she jokingly admonished. “Besides, I could use some time without you and my brother up my ass. Go be a hero.” So, that's what he did.
Now, he was eager to grab their caffeine fix and meet his best friend back in the one place everything made sense: Firehouse 51. What Kelly wasn't expecting, was running into Heather, Andy's widow, and her two boys at the coffee shop on his way out.
“Okay, guys. Let's get you whatever you want, okay?” he heard Heather's voice saying sweetly and looked up to find her entering the quaint coffee shop with her sons.
“Heather,” he called as she followed the boys inside.
“Hi, Kelly!” the excitement in the boys' voices made his heart flutter.
He smiled. It had been a while since he'd seen them, they looked bigger. The boys, Griffin and Ben, rushed forward to give him hugs. It was familiar, he missed them. “Hey!” he greeted cheerfully, wrapping his arms around them, careful not to spill the tray of coffees in his hand. “Hey, guys!”
Kelly missed that feeling, the feeling of family. He still had it with Becker and Shay, but the Darden kids were different. He'd seen them both born, seen them take their first steps, heard them say their first words. . . Andy Darden's family was his family. It seemed like a lifetime ago.
Heather wouldn't meet his eyes as she ushered her boys inside. She chuckled awkwardly and pulled the boys away from Kelly's embrace. “Okay. Okay, kids. Let's go in.”
“Hey,” Kelly said, “how are you doing?”
“I'm good, Kelly,” she replied, hesitant. “I gotta go in.”
“Uh, hey. . . Wait, I've. . . been meaning to come by and―”
“Just save it. Really.”
Kelly knew Heather was grieving. He knew she probably blamed him and everyone at 51 for Andy's death, but he had to try. They were family. He tried not to think of how different things would be if―
“Come on. Andy and I were―” Heather cut him off.
“Stop right there.” The pain in her eyes turned to blame, and something else Kelly didn't want to put a name to because if he did it would only break his heart more. He wanted to reach out and hug her, if only she would let him. “Andy never even would have been a firefighter if it weren't for you,” Heather reminded him, voice breaking at the truth of it all. She turned to leave, allowing Kelly to sit with the resentment she left behind.
An emergency call to a residential district later that day should've been enough to take Kelly's mind off of his run-in with Heather, but he was too wrapped up in guilt that wasn't his alone to carry. When Cruz called up to Mills on the ladder, Kelly's resolve finally broke.
He stepped away from where he was talking with Becker and the other Squad members. No one else would die on his watch. “Hey, Candidate! One hand on the beam, Candidate! I don't care if you're carrying a damn cow!” he yelled up to the newest recruit. “Men die when they relax!”
“Okay, Kelly,” Casey said. “He gets it.” His eyes found his sister's over Kelly's shoulder, she sent him a discreet nod. I'll talk to him, it said.
“Yeah, he better,” was the Squad lieutenant's reply. His shoulder hurt. Everything hurt.
Kelly returned to Becker's side; he knew the look on her face well, it wasn't pitying. She never pitied Kelly. Instead, she called him out on his bullshit, always. He hung his head, breathing a deep sigh.
“There were better ways to do that,” she said.
He nodded. “I know.”
“You can't fly off at the handle like this anymore, Severide.” Becker's eyes darkened and Kelly found himself looking away from the vibrant sky-blue irises that saw anything and everything about him all at once, eyes he found himself lost in more often than not. “Talk to someone. We're all going through it.”
“Yeah,” he said. He rubbed his shoulder, it seemed to hurt worse knowing he disappointed the one person he always wanted to impress. Kelly pressed his lips into a thin line and left Becker standing by the Squad rig with a short nod of his head. He needed to speak with Shay, she'd have something to help with the pain at least.
Shay and Dawson were chatting away at the back of Ambulance 61 when Kelly approached. Dawson excused herself leaving the Squad lieutenant and her partner alone. Several seconds passed without a word between the longtime friends; Kelly massaged his shoulder. He should hate that he was asking Shay to do it again, he should hate lying to his comrades that way, but he didn't. . . not when it helped.
“Hey,” he said.
Shay stood up as he drew near. She knew what he was coming to find her for, and while it twisted her stomach in knots most days, how could she say no to her best friend? “Hey,” she greeted.
“I need something,” Kelly confessed, voice strained as he leaned his weight against the back of the ambulance. He knew she'd help him, she always did. Leslie Shay was as loyal as they came; a trait she shared with Becker Casey.
She sighed, opened her bag, and retrieved a small vial. Kelly reached for the tiny bottle and Shay clutched it to her chest. “That's the last one,” she warned. She shouldn't do it, but she was going to anyway. They both knew she would.
“Yeah,” he agreed.
“I mean it.”
“Right. It's all good.”
Shay handed the vial to Kelly and looked away as he slipped it into the pocket of his gear. “And you tell MC. She already knows something's up and I hate lying to her.”
Kelly said nothing else as he walked back to his crew.
The next morning at the station was silent. Kelly Severide considered himself many things but never one particularly capable of lying to the people closest to him. He couldn't bring himself to tell anyone about his shoulder. He knew the risks of continuing to work with his injury, but he also knew what would happen if he let it be known. On top of that, he couldn't stop thinking about Heather Darden. He was in for a very long shift ― hell, a long week ― at the rate things were going.
He hadn't stopped for coffee, choosing instead to drink whatever was around the firehouse. It would be a while before he felt right going back to the shop; he told himself Mini Casey would understand. Mini Casey, was the nickname given to the woman by Kelly himself when she joined the Firehouse. Shay warned him to tell the younger Casey sibling what was going on. But if he did, would she understand? Then, there was the matter of Becker instructing him to talk to someone. . . What good would that do except force him to dwell on everything he already knew? He sighed, just another obstacle to get through.
Kelly glanced up as Casey entered the locker room, duffel bag over his shoulder and closely followed by his sister. It was good to see the two of them civil again. Though, civil, he supposed, was reaching a bit. If anything, Becker tolerated her older brother simply because she had to ― they were on the same force after all.
“Mornin',” Kelly greeted warmly as the siblings split ways to their respective lockers.
“Mornin',” Casey returned.
“Hey, how are the Darden kids doing? You talked to Heather at all?” Kelly asked, pulling his shoes on and deciding to talk to someone, even if it wasn't exactly what Becker meant.
Casey stepped around the row of lockers separating him and Kelly. “Uh, yeah. As good as can be expected, I suppose. You seen 'em?”
Kelly ducked his head, he was not going to tell Casey or Becker the whole truth. “Yeah.”
“I hear they're coming to the barbecue.”
“Good.”
“Yeah.”
Becker watched her brother walk away; she turned to Kelly. “The hell was that?”
“What?” he shrugged.
She narrowed her eyes and gestured to the spot her brother occupied moments ago. “That,” she said.
He shook his head. “What? It was nothin'.”
“You're acting real strange, Severide.” She stripped out of her t-shirt and leggings and pulled on her uniform, careful not to pull the bandages from her arm. Then tied her curls back with a hair tie while she closely studied her lieutenant's face. “I don't know what's going on with you these days, but we both know I'm gonna find out. Might as well save me the trouble and come clean with whatever it is.”
“You're seeing things, kid. I'm fine.”
“Sure. 'Cause yelling at Mills yesterday just screams fine. Right, okay.”
“Will you quit doing that?”
“Doing what?”
Kelly motioned to her head with a dry chuckle. “That thing you do. Analyzing me. Stop it.”
She folded her arms over her chest and scoffed, “I'll stop when you tell me what the hell's up with you.”
“Nothing is up,” he said, stuffing his hands in the pockets of his slacks. “You're paranoid, Mini Case. Maybe you should talk to someone.” He winked, leaving the locker room in search of the chief.
He hoped his answers were sufficient enough to keep Becker off of his back. The conversations about his shoulder and Heather weren't ones he wanted to have any time soon. He knew what she'd say and he wasn't ready to hear it, not from a licensed professional and certainly not from Becker “Mini” Casey.
“Hey, Chief. You got a second?” he asked, knocking on the doorframe of Chief Boden's office. If this conversation went well, at least he wouldn't have to face Heather and the kids on Saturday. He couldn't, not when Heather blamed him for her husband's death.
“Sure, Kelly,” the chief said, looking up from the paperwork on his desk.
“Looking for a few extra shifts this month,” he offered, stepping into the room. “How's Saturday sound?”
“Saturday's barbecue,” the chief reminded.
“I've been there before,” he tried confidently, hopefully.
“No way, every man on deck on this one.”
“Chief, I could really use the cash.”
“Ask me next month,” said Chief Boden with such finality Kelly knew it was pointless to argue.
“Okay.” He nodded and turned to leave. That weekend would not be easily navigated.
Kelly's shoulder tensed. He thought of Darden and Casey, he thought of Shay and Becker. One of those people he lost in an accident that never should have occurred, and the other three he found himself growing estranged from. He and the Truck lieutenant may be on speaking terms again but what did that truly mean when everything Heather said ― or didn't say ― only reminded him that Casey failed to keep Andy from entering the attic?
And Shay. . . There she was, risking her whole career to help him with the pain caused by the same accident that killed his best friend. Had he ever told her the reason? He couldn't remember. Finally, Becker, the proverbial pain in his ass. What would happen to their friendship once everything was out in the open and she knew the truth? He didn't want to think about that.
Ignoring the storm of chaos waiting to unleash its hell in his life, Kelly made his way out to the Apparatus Bay as the announcement of Christopher Herrmann's visit rang out over the PA system. Suddenly, he was brought back to the night Herrmann, Casey and Becker almost died. It felt like so long ago, though, in reality, was only a couple of weeks.
“Hey!” everyone cheered as Herrmann limped his way into the bay, aided by a cane. He looked well, better than he did after his surgery and during the days that followed. He survived, they all had.
“Welcome back,” Otis said, meeting his friend on the floor. “Jesus, man.”
Kelly sensed the sadness in the room, uncomfortable and strangling. Becker stiffened at his side and he knew seeing Herrmann brought back memories of that night for her, too. It had been a while since he last checked in with her, sat down and truly asked her how she was doing. Becker didn't do feelings; she hated confronting them, hated anyone else confronting them for her. Kelly hadn't found a good enough time to do it anyway.
He bumped his shoulder against hers, offering a small smile when she looked up to meet his eyes. She returned it with a tight-lipped nod of her head. He didn't press further.
“They ticked a nerve in my leg,” Herrmann was saying when Kelly faced forward again. “I may not walk straight again.”
“Candidate, get him a chair,” Vargas ordered.
The Truck members parted down the middle and allowed Mills to roll the office chair to the centre of the group. Everyone sported grim expressions, no one wanted to entertain the idea of going on without one of their own so soon after losing Darden.
“Thanks, kid,” Herrmann groaned as Mills and Vargas helped him sit. He eyed his colleagues mournfully. It could not be the end. “Ah, whoa, whoa, whoa, wait a second, fellas, um. . .” Herrmann looked around at the men and women who became his home away from home. “Are any of my kids around here? My wife or her parents?”
“No, why?” Otis asked.
“What the hell?” The company watched as Herrmann shouldok his leg, pushing himself up from the chair and dancing in place. He grinned. “I'm healed!” he exclaimed, dancing around the circle. “It must've been living with my damn in-laws was breaking me down.”
Cheers erupted among the firefighters and paramedics of Firehouse 51; Otis rushed forward and lightly tackled Herrmann in a hug. The air grew lighter then.
“All right,” he warned, “not that healed.”
“Glad you're back, Herrmann. We're a better house with you here,” Chief Boden said. The scene before him reminded Kelly of Becker's first day back after her Leave of Absence. It was good to see some things didn't have to change.
He smiled. “Thanks, Chief.”
“Uh, later on, we're gonna have a whiteboard session about what happened in the Darden incident last month. I expect you all to be there.” The chief glanced around the circle, lingering on his two lieutenants. They hadn't done a great job of leading their crews in the wake of Darden's death and he had to give them a stern reminder of their positions and the authority they held within the firehouse. “But on another note,” he said a bit lighter, gesturing to the young woman Kelly remembered briefly seeing outside the chief's office, “this is Nicki Rutkowski.”
Kelly smiled, she was beautiful, and she was smiling at him.
“She's gonna be working with us next month, helping out with the payroll. Her father is one of my oldest friends. We were in the Navy together, so y'all just treat her like she's your very own. . . sister.”
“Thanks for having me,” Nicki said. Kelly wasn't sure what to make of the grin she was giving him.
“Welcome. Don't screw up the checks,” Herrmann offered playfully. “The first and the 15th.”
“Oh, I will,” she shot back, and the bay resounded with laughter cut short by the alarms.
Accident, multiple injuries ― Squad 3, Truck 81, Engine 51, Ambulance 61.
As they rushed to don their turnout gear, Kelly glanced back over his shoulder at Nicki one last time. She was watching him walk away, and Kelly Severide had a very bad idea.
Pulling up to the construction site, Kelly wasn't sure Becker could assess the damage from their point of view the way she usually did. The dust around the workers settled in quickly and even he couldn't tell what was going on. He turned in his seat, their eyes locked and he knew instantly that she understood. No matter what happens, on me. We go in together, we come out together. He refused to let fate entertain the idea of taking her from him this time.
“What's goin' on?” Chief asked, surveying the sight of the building in front of him. It was a mess.
“The foundation collapsed, and there's three guys down in the basement hole,” one of the workers informed.
51 would not lose more of its members today.
The chief faced his men. “I'm gonna need a 2 1/2 up there,” he orders.
“On it.”
“Let's go,” Kelly said, heading for the stairs. He peeked over his shoulder, confirmed Becker was behind him and continued. Not another basement. He knew Becker clocked the shift in his nerves when he felt her brush up against his back, she was on him as instructed, partners to the end. Two in, two out.
At the top of the structure looking down, the firefighters were met with another gaping hole, much like the one that almost claimed three of their own in the apartment fire. Kelly studied the tension in Becker's jaw, whether from the trauma of what happened or sheer determination, he couldn't say.
“There's no fire, but let's drop the 2 1/2 into the hole from the ladder. Cruz, hurry it up!” Chief Boden radioed down to his men on the ground. The ladder was positioned over the building and extended as far as it would reach. “Get that hose up here,” he called again. Those on the structure watched as Mills climbed with the hose up the ladder as far as the chief deemed high enough to reach into the hole. “There's good. This area may give some more, so let's move quickly. Now, charge it.”
The valve on the engine was opened and water surged through, the hose went rigid and provided the firefighters with a way down into the hole. One by one the members of Truck and Squad slid down to the crumbled building floors below. They quickly sifted through the rubble, locating the trapped construction workers and assessing their injuries enough to figure out who must be evacuated first.
“I'm under here! I'm under here!” calls for help were heard beneath a pile of flooring that collapsed and covered a worker. Kelly and Casey moved quickly, removing the slabs of material together and allowing him to breathe.
“Are you okay? Can you sit up?” Casey helped the man into a sitting position.
“Peter's farther down,” he said, “I heard him talking but I couldn't see him.”
“Here, take him out,” the lieutenant instructed, helping lift the injured worker. When they were clear, he crawled to the edge of the hole and shined his flashlight into it, looking for Peter. “Peter?”
“I knew this was gonna be a bad day,” Peter replied. “I told my wife this morning I had a premonition.”
“Are you hurt?”
“I can't breathe, can't move.”
Sweeping his light around the hole, Casey saw the large slabs of concrete pinning Peter in place. Getting him out would be a challenge, one he was not equipped for. “All right. We'll get you out,” he assured. “I need three pipe poles and a saw.”
“How you doing down there, Peter?” Becker asked to keep the man conscious for as long as possible.
His eyes travelled up to the sound of her voice, “I've been better.”
Kelly didn't have a plan. Kelly hardly ever had a plan, but he wasn't going to leave the man trapped alone in a hole that could give way at any moment. It was a bad idea, trading in his life like that, but he had something to prove. He just wasn't sure to whom he was proving that something.
“I'm going in,” the Squad lieutenant said, and two pairs of blue eyes snapped to his face. The Casey siblings were too alike in more than one way.
“It's unstable,” was the Truck leader's response.
“Aren't we all?” Kelly joked.
“Clearly some of us more than others,” added Becker. “Severide.”
He looked into her eyes, committing their blue hue and the frustration in them to memory. He fit himself at the mouth of the smaller hole and prepared to climb down, carefully lowering himself into the darkness below. Kelly was known to be reckless at times, but that was going a little too far.
“Not so bad, right?” Peter said as Kelly surveyed the damage keeping the older man pinned in.
“It's Peter, right? Can you move your foot?” Kelly knelt in the rubble, doing his best to assess what he could see of Peter's injuries.
Peter shook his head, “No. I haven't even felt it for half an hour.”
Kelly attempted to remove the block from Peter's leg but it was too heavy, he couldn't do it without help. “How about the rest of you?”
“Can't breathe too good.”
He reached forward and pressed his hands along Peter's torso, when he touched the spot under his ribs, Peter flinched, yelling out in pain. It wasn't looking good. “Okay, okay.”
“Just― just get my foot and I'll be fine.”
“Okay. We're gonna get you outta here.” He knew better than to make such promises.
“Do me one favour?”
“Yeah?”
“No lies.”
Kelly sighed. He loved his job but he hated this part. “Fair enough. I think you're bleeding on the inside, and your foot is the least of your problems.” He looked above him at the siblings watching him from the edge of the hole. “Casey! We need this hole opened up.”
“On it,” Casey called back.
Kelly glimpsed a myriad of emotions washing over Becker's face, he could tell by the look in her eyes that she was about to do something he'd regret. He shook his head telling her to rethink whatever she was going to do, she stared down at him defiantly.
Becker crawled down into the hole before Cruz brought the saw to the debris. She dropped down beside Kelly, wordless and stone-faced. This woman will be the death of me, he considered before fixing her with a hard stare.
“What the hell do you think you're doing, MC?” he hissed.
“Two in, two out,” was all she said, and Kelly knew Becker would be just fine.
He shook his head and turned back to Peter who had been watching the two of them with warmth in his eyes. “Hang on, we'll get you back to your wife in no time.”
“Yeah, sure,” Peter said.
“You saying I got a bad poker face?” asked Kelly; Becker snorted.
Peter smirked. “I'm saying I'd be all-in on that one.”
“I have to agree,” Becker put in with a friendly smile. “You're breathing and talking, so that's good.”
The building trembled. Becker and Kelly positioned themselves over Peter's body as best they could to shield him from anything else that might fall. They were running out of time as the structure's stability continued to weaken, threatening their lives and the lives of the construction crew still waiting to be evacuated. That was not the day Kelly envisioned when he got to work that morning. Dying in a hole with Becker by his side. . .
“Severide? MC?” Casey called down to them as the shaking ceased.
“Yeah, fine. Get Dawson over here!” Kelly couldn't wait any longer.
Dawson appeared at the edge of the hole. “Here.”
“His lower leg is trapped, there's internal bleeding.”
“There's no way to release it?”
“No.”
Becker's blood chilled.
“Other than that,” Peter remarked through laboured breaths, “everything's peachy.”
“All right, I'll call for a trauma surgeon,” Dawson said, pushing herself up from the hole's entrance.
“Hey, how long?” Kelly asked.
She sighed. “I don't know.”
“And what would a trauma surgeon do that you two couldn't?”
Becker let out a deep breath and swallowed. “Take off your foot.”
Kelly was glad Becker climbed down with him. They would have to discuss her attitude and why she thought following him into the hole of a crumbling building was a good idea, but that could wait. For now, he allowed himself to calm into the presence of his partner by his side. She was following his orders this time, at least. No matter what happened, she was staying with him.
Peter's leg was in bad shape, his whole body was in bad shape. There was no guarantee they'd be able to get him out in time to receive treatment. Kelly hated failing and knew Becker did as well. Breaking news of a person's death to their family was always the hardest part of their job.
“What's your name?” Peter inquired, studying Kelly's face.
He glanced at Becker and then turned to the injured man in front of him. “Severide, Kelly,” he said, looking down at his hands. “Everyone pretty much calls me Severide.”
“Not everyone,” Becker muttered under her breath.
“Kelly. You married, Kelly?” It wasn't the question either of the firefighters expected to hear that day, it threw them off balance a bit, though they didn't show it.
“No.”
Peter looked over at Becker. “What's your name, sweetheart?”
She smiled a soft smile usually reserved for Kelly, she figured Peter could use the gentleness. “Casey, Becker. But I have an older brother up there right now who has the authority to boss me around almost as much as this guy does,” she said, nodding to Kelly's quiet form. “So, thanks to this one, everyone calls me MC. It's short for Mini Casey.”
Peter chuckled, the sound came out pained and Becker's heart broke. “Becker,” he confirmed with a nod. “How about you? You married?”
She shook her head, anything to stop the tears forming in her eyes. “No, sir.”
“Don't wait too long.” a pause. “My wife's name is Georgie. Her dad wanted a boy but he kept getting girls.”
“There was a barbershop on my street named Harris and Sons. Mr. Harris named it when his wife was pregnant with their first. Ended up having five girls,” Kelly laughed. He couldn't imagine laughing at a time like that, but it felt good.
Peter coughed, blood pooled at the corner of his mouth and the two Rescue Squad members eased his upper body to the side just enough so he didn't aspirate. The humour was gone, and the moment passed. Becker's heart continued to clench.
“Severide, find a vein and get this saline into him,” Shay called, handing an IV drip through the hole.
“How long on that surgeon?” he asked, reaching for the supplies and getting to work on Peter.
“15 minutes,” she answered, meeting Becker's gaze. She didn't ask why the other woman was in the hole, she knew it was where she needed to be.
Peter coughed lightly. “Kelly?”
“Yeah?”
“We don't have time for a surgeon. You're gonna have to do it, you and Becker. Take off the foot. Get me out of here, get me home.”
“Tell that surgeon to hurry the hell up!” Becker screamed up to the firefighters above her.
The structure trembled again and Kelly threw himself protectively over Peter's body. When it was done, he looked to Becker for confirmation that she was all right. He wouldn't lose her down there, he couldn't.
“You're all right,” he said to Peter.
“MC, Severide, we need to pull back. It's gonna give.” Sometimes Kelly hated Casey's voice.
“That the older brother?” Peter said to Becker when he noticed the lingering stare between her and the man above him. Her silence was all the proof he needed. “He's right,” he said. “Go.”
“Kel?”
Kelly refused to fail. “Casey, I need a Sawzall!”
“What are you doing?”
“Two in, two out, right?” He was asking her to trust his reckless judgment one last time. She nodded. “Hey, Peter.”
“Yeah, I'm st― still with you, Kelly,” the older man assured.
“Tell us about Georgie.”
Peter smiled and laughed. “I-I married above my head. Been playing catch-up ever since.”
“Do you have any children?” this from Becker. We go in together, we come out together.
“No, we tried.”
Casey's voice sounded above them, “Severide.” He lowered the Sawzall down. His light eyes flickered over his sister's face. She could see the anger and hurt and fear deep in his features, but he said nothing.
Kelly and Becker set to work attempting to move the piece of concrete to get them enough access for the amputation. They worked silently, in tandem as one mind. When Kelly moved, so did Becker. He knew he was lucky to have her on his team.
“Kelly?”
“Yeah?”
“You got a phone?”

That night, Sylvie calls Matt to tell him about Liam, though she’s not sure why. Friends, she reminds herself. They’re still friends. Matt listens to her with patience and understanding, encouraging her with thoughtful and kind words. She’s thanking him, about to hang up, but then Matt lets out a breath and she can tell he’s got something on his mind.
“What’s up? I can hear you thinking through the phone,” she jokes, keeping her tone light and airy. The last thing she wants is to somehow ruin this fragile friendship they’ve fallen back into. There’s rustling and then she hears a door close.
“I uhm…I met someone too,” his voice is shaking. It’s not what she’s used to from Captain Matthew Casey, it’s unsure and nervous and she hopes to god it’s not because of her.

Andy Darden died years ago, when gabby Dawson left Chicago, Darden’s sister shows up again and take over for Dawson when she left.
Now it have been three years ago since since Darden’s sister started to work on Ambo 61, and she is now dating Captain Matt Casey.
Darden’s sister is best friend with Sylvie Brett and Stella Kidd.
When Griffin Darden shows up at the firehouse alone and tells Y/n about the situation at home with no Heather and Ben who is having a hard time. Y/n has to take the hard decision to leave Chicago and move to Portland to take care of her nephews.
Casey and Y/n decides to have a long distance relationship, Casey comes to visit her in Portland a few times.
When it is up for the Stellaride wedding, Y/n comes back to Chicago with Griffin and Ben. Everyone is happy to see them, but Y/n get surprised when she sees Dawson at the firehouse.
Something that firehouse 51 doesn’t know is that Y/n is gonna move back to Chicago with her nephew’s, and that decision will make Matt Casey really happy and they can continue with there relationship.
Best thing to ever happen to me- Matt Casey/ Darden sister
Summary: You replace Dawson on ambo and start dating Matt Casey. It’s been three years and now your nephew needs your help.
Warnings: mentions of attempted kidnapping
Authors note: This is just the first half of this request. I decided to post this tonight and work on the second half later on. ❤️
~~~~~~~~~
You never thought you would be able to work at 51 after your brother, Andy Darden, died with this firehouse years ago. You haven’t even been able to bring yourself to visit, though you have still kept in contact with the crews, which turned family, after all these years. When Gabby Dawson left, Chief Boden knew exactly who needed to fill Gabby’s spot, so he called you. It took some convincing, and a few drinks with Matt and Kelly, before you finally caved. As soon as Brett joined your small table at Molly’s and began conversing with the three of you, you couldn’t say no. Andy’s death isn’t the end of the story for this firehouse and you were going to make sure of that.
Now, three years later, you are still riding ambo with Brett and have been dating Captain Matt Casey for about two years. There had always been something between you and Matt, but Matt stayed away from any relationship with you, other than being your friend, out of respect for his best friend and your brother. Now, Matt is the only person that can calm you down and make you feel safe. Once you figured that out almost three years ago, you knew that there was no need to deny yourself true happiness.
~FLASHBACK~
The last run had you more than shaken. Someone attempted to take you and Brett hostage on a call. They lured you both into the house and managed to knock Brett out, but you were able to call for help and hide until Jay Halstead and the intelligence unit burst through the door.
After intelligence took both of your statements, you went on autopilot and drove Brett and the ambo back to the firehouse. Once you debriefed Boden and made sure Brett was okay, you hid yourself in a supply closet off the the bunk room. You figured, since it was also close to the laundry room, nobody would hear you over the roar of the machines as someone ran a load through. You didn’t even consider that someone might walk in and open the door.
“Darden?” Cruz asked, kneeling down to get a better look at you. “Hey. What’s wrong?” He asked, trying to reach for you. As soon as he made contact, you screamed, throwing yourself away from the intruder and kicking your legs wildly. “Woah. Hey, it’s just me. It’s Cruz!” He tried calling out to you again, but it was obviously no use.
“What’s going on?” Matt asked, running in as soon as he heard you scream. His office was on the other side of the wall, so it only took him seconds to respond.
“I don’t know.” Cruz said, standing up and backing away to reveal you curled into yourself as you rocked back and forth, sobbing uncontrollably and borderline hyperventilating.
“Y/n?” Matt asked, coming to take Cruz’s original spot. “Hey sweetheart. It’s me. It’s Matty.” Matt called, sitting down arms length from you.
Your head slowly rose as you heard Matt’s voice through the call that kept replaying through your head and the what if’s. “M-Matt?” You whispered, throat choked with tears.
Matt smiled and nodded his head. “Yeah. It’s me.” Matt said, not daring to move yet. He could tell that you were terrified. Something happened and it shook you to your core. It’s been a while since he’s seen that look, but he knows he’s on thin ice right now. You could completely shatter at any moment.
You breathed a slight sigh of relief as you realized that it was okay. Matt was here, so you were safe. You reached out, tentatively at first, but then launched yourself into Matt’s arms as soon as your hand touched him. Matt caught you easily as you scrambled into his lap, burying your face into his neck.
“Shhhh. It’s alright. I’ve got you now. Breathe.” Matt shushed, rubbing your back and slightly rocking back and forth. He could feel you trembling as your ragged breaths fanned down his neck and onto his collarbone. “Cruz. Go get Kelly and a blanket.” Matt instructed, seeing him still standing a few feet away.
Kelly came in with a blanket and a water bottle not too long after. “Cruz said Y/n is having a panic attack. Here.” Kelly said, crouching down and wrapping you in the blanket.
Matt felt you cringe into him as Kelly accidentally brushed against you. “Hey. It’s alright. It’s just Kelly.” Matt tried to sooth, but you were having none of it and shook your head, gripping onto Matt for dear life. Matt sighed and looked to Kelly, who sat down a few feet away from the both of you, texting the chief to tell him that you and Matt might be a while.
“He tried to t-take me and B-Brett, Matt.” You whimpered, sniffling and shoving your face further into Matt’s neck.
Matt looked over your head and at Kelly for an explanation, but Kelly was in the dark too. “Who did sweetheart?” Matt asked, kissing your head.
“T-the last call. It was a t-trap. I got us h-help, but he h-hurt Brett t-trying to t-take us.” You explained, getting as close to Matt as possible.
Matt and Kelly shared a look before Kelly slowly stood, walking to the door to go check on Brett, who he saw laying on her bunk when he was coming in here. Matt said nothing as his best friend left, just let you get your emotions out as he cradled you in his lap.
You later told him that even though you knew Joe and Kelly meant no harm, you felt the safest with Matt. You were terrified that they would take you away from him or vice versa, so you clung to him. You had finally found your safety and you weren’t going to let that go.
~END OF FLASHBACK~
You were sitting in the common area with your best friends, Sylvie Brett and Stella Kidd, when you heard a familiar laugh as the doors of the apparatus floor opened. Kelly had an arm slung around the shoulders of your oldest nephew, Griffin Darden.
“Griffin! What are you doing here bud?” You asked, smiling as you stood and approached your nephew.
Griffin threw his arms around you and buried his face into your neck, finding comfort in his aunt. Everyone watched and Kelly exchanged a look with Matt, who had come in to see what the commotion was all about. Kelly, Matt, and you could tell something was wrong, but you weren’t about to push the subject in front of the rest of the fire house.
“What? Aren’t you happy to see your favorite nephew?” Griffin joked as he finally pulled away. When he spotted Matt, he moved around you and jogged to his favorite adopted uncle, throwing his arms around him as well. “Hey Uncle Matt.” Griffin whispered, finally feeling at home.
“Hey bud! It’s good to see you. It’s been too long.” Matt greeted, hugging Griffin and locking eyes with you.
Once everyone got a chance to say hello, or got a proper introduction to Griffin, you lead him to Matt’s office with Matt taking the lead. Once the door was shut and the blinds were closed, Griffin sank down onto Matt’s bunk, face turned to the floor.
“Alright bud. Real talk. I’m glad you’re here, but what’s going on?” You asked, coming to sit next to your nephew as Matt leaned on his desk.
“I, um Ben and I, we need help.” Griffin whispered, playing with his fingers. “Mom. She, uh, she’s been gone for a while and Ben is having a hard time. I can’t do it Aunt Y/n. I tried, but I'm failing.” Griffin cried, leaning into your side.
“Shhh. It’s alright. You’re here now.” You soothed, rubbing Griffin’s back. “Im gonna help you and everything is going to be okay.” You assured, looking to Matt for support.
“We’ll figure it out bud. You did good.” Matt praised, coming to kneel in front of you and Griffin. “You’ve done the hard part, which is asking for help. Everything else will fall into place now.” Matt assured, a hand resting on Griffin’s knee and the other clutching yours.
After Griffin finally calmed down, you and Matt convinced him to lay down for a while. The exhaustion was prominent in the poor boy and you were sure he hasn’t been sleeping in favor of trying to keep his brother out of trouble. You and Matt leaned against his desk and looked through your phones or files until Griffin fell asleep. Once you were sure that your nephew was finally knocked out, you pulled Matt out of the room and to Kelly’s office.
“Hey Kel. I know this is your office, but can we borrow it to talk and could you possibly go sit in Matt’s office with Griffin? He’s asleep, so you can do your paperwork or whatever.” You said, pleading with Kelly through your eyes, though he was going to cave as soon as you asked.
“Yeah. Just let me know when your done.” Kelly affirmed, standing up with a pile of files in his hands. He walked out of his own office and into Matt’s, quietly shutting the door behind him.
Matt shut Kelly’s door before turning to you. You were pacing in the small space, hands shaking as they ran through your hair. You were in deep thought and Matt knew you wouldn’t hear him if he didn’t get your attention first.
“Y/n? Sweetheart?” Matt asked, slowly coming to stand in your path to halt your steps.
Once you finally looked up to meet Matt’s eyes, you had tears in your own. You spoke before you lost your nerve. “I have to go back with him.” You shook your head. “I have to go back and help Ben and Griffin. I can’t ask you to go or to wait or whatever. It’s my family’s choices that have led us here and I can’t have my crazy seeping into your life.” You rambled, pacing again before Matt caught you and brought you into a hug.
“Hey hey hey. Breathe.” Matt shushed, just like he did all those years ago. “We will figure this out. It’s going to be okay.” Matt assured, rocking back and forth with you.
“Matt. I’m scared.” You whispered, burying your face into his neck. “You know I don’t do well with change, but I have to do this. I mean, I have to do this, right?” You asked, stepping back to look at Matt.
Matt smiled sadly down at you before placing a kiss to your forehead. “Yeah. You do, but I’ll wait. I’m not going anywhere. We can make this work. It’s only for a couple years right? Then they will be old enough and you can come home or whatever happens then. Yeah?” Matt assured, brushing hair away from your face.
You nodded, leaning in and inhaling the scent that made you feel at ease. God, how were you doing to do this without Matt? You had no time to think about it before the tones sounded and you were being called on a run.
Black Twitter reacts to Jack Harlow finding out Brandy and Ray J are siblings in wild Hot 97 interview
Jack Harlow might want to log off from social media for a few days and listen to some 90s R&B.
Tumblr media
Black Twitter is not happy with Jack Harlow right now. Today (May 11), jaws were dropped when the “First Class” rapper discovered the Vocal Bible Brandy and entertainment mogul Ray J were siblings.
While visiting New York’s Hot 97 radio station, radio host Ebro Darden and crew challenged Harlow to a little game of guess that song.
As Darden cues up Brandy’s 1998 hit, “Angel in Disguise,” most figured it would be an easy win for the 24-year-old. They were wrong. Very wrong.
Darden and his co-hosts are seen nodding their heads to the tune as they give Harlow a chance to play the game.
“Oh, uh, Aaliyah?” Harlow asks.
“Nope!” the hosts yell after Harlow confuses the two very different artists.
“Stay with it, stay with it,” they urge him while giving the young rapper another shot. Some sing along while waiting for his answer.
The intro to the song is almost over and Harlow still can’t name the artist or track. One of the hosts asks, “Do you want me to give him a hint?”
“She had a TV show. She starred in a TV show,” Laura Stylez tells him.
“Tell me another hint,” Harlow says. Rosenberg chimes in with, “Her brother is the reason a lot of people are famous.”
With no response from Harlow, Ebro adds, “Her brother had an amazing sex tape.”
After several seconds go by, the “What’s Poppin” rapper asks, “Who’s Ray J’s sister?”
The hosts are shocked. While some throw their heads back with laughter, another can be heard saying, “Yo, he’s serious.” One host comes to his defense reminding listeners that Harlow is only 24.
“Brandy and Ray J are siblings?” Harlow asks as those in the room yell “Yes” in unison.
“Nobody’s ever told me that in my life,” the rapper responds.
Once Twitter got wind of the interview, they were flabbergasted. Most users seemed to feel that Harlow not recognizing the song was absurd.
“Not recognizing Brandy’s voice is why he shouldn’t be doing black music,” one person tweeted. Another added, “Brandy had one of the most recognizable voices. Ugh these generations of rappers.”
Others went a bit easier on the rapper. “Y’all are doing a LOT about Jack Harlow not knowing Brandy and Ray J. As if we don’t see young Black people ‘discover’ new things daily. Hell y’all find out Bobby Caldwell is white every three months.”
Take a look at what Black Twitter is saying about the revelation.
jack harlow is WHITE! him being 24 don't got nothing to do w him not knowing brandy and ray j are related, i'm 19 and i know that. as much as he tries to infiltrate black culture or whatever y'all can't forget that he is white at the end of the day — 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐞 𝐍𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭 🧙🏾‍♀️ (@theenarcissist) May 11, 2022
Hey!
I have a request.
Matt Casey x Andy Darden’s sister.
What if y/n was the one who needed to leave Chicago to take care of her two nephews, she and Casey decide to have a long distance relationship.
It is just a few days from the stellaride wedding, and y/n shows up at the firehouse with her two nephews.
Y/n feels a little uncomfortable when she sees gabby Dawson around at the firehouse and Casey noticed that. Gabby and y/n used to be best friends.
On the night of the wedding y/n are gonna tell Casey how she is moving back to Chicago but with her two nephews and that she will be back as the PIC. Casey had a plan about proposing to y/n.
