More development art from #pixarluca ! This post is a collection of young sea monsters! Jellyfish babies is the first image I created at Pixar so it has a special spot in my heart 💛 I know development side of work might look exciting and fun but I believe finding a clear direction for the film is very important goal and it’s extremely challenging job, so I wanted to share Daniela Strijleva, Deanna Marsigliese and Jennifer Chang really shaped the beautiful style for the characters you saw in Luca.I was very lucky to be surrounded by fierce women leaders! They confirmed that Evelyn’s a lesbian? While it's a bit of a bummer that they went the J.K. Rolling approach with revealing that, I can kinda see why they never made it clear. If it was made explicit in the movie, half the audience would be (understandably) annoyed that the sole LGBT character was an antagonist, while the other half would be (far less understandably) annoyed that there was an LGBT character at all.
To be honest, I don’t think even the entire crew knew/cared about it. But what I asked Deanna Marsigliese (the head character designer) was, “You knew what you were doing with Lesbian Icon Evelyn Deavor, right?” and her reply was, “Oh yes, there’s a lot more women working at Pixar now.”
So my understanding that there were queer/ally women intentionally putting gay-coded characters and subtext (particularly with Evelyn and Voyd) that the dudes working on the film totally overlooked. That’s why when men working on the movie are asked about it, they say things like “Oh, we didn’t intend them to be that way-- we don’t really make characters thinking about stuff like that--” and yet you have the head designer saying “Oh yeah we knew what we were doing lol.” 🤷
