Three covers from the 30s with stories featuring Race Williams by Carroll John Daly, Black Mask's most popular fictional detective (until a falling out with the editors and the move to Dime Detective).
He was the second, after a character called Three Gun Terry (also from C.J. Daly), hard-boiled P.I. first appearing in Black Mask in June, 1923, and the first hard-boiled private eye novel, The Snarl of the Beast, 1927.
Race was a shoot first, then go over and kick the corpse to make sure they are really dead, then shot `em again just to be sure, kind of detective. He charged an extra $3.75 for every man killed on a case.
He made Dirty Harry and Mike Hammer look like Father Brown.

JAGUAR: Hey, youse mug, get lost! Dis here's my roof!
Cardigan didn't know what shocked him more: that there was a jaguar on New York City rooftop, or that it spoke with a thick Brooklyn accent.
