Céline and Julie Go Boating is the film Bergman would have made if Bergman had had a sense of humor. This absurdist shaggy dog fantasy co-written and directed by Jacques Rivette tells two parallel stories; the first and most enjoyable consists of a series of playful episodes documenting the friendship of Céline (Juliet Berto) and Julie (Dominique Labourier) from its beginning, when the second…
CELINE ET JULIE VONT EN BATEAU - (Jacques Rivette, 1974)
Juliet Berto (Julie) and Dominique Labourier (Céline) are two friends who are requested to save a menaced girl who lives in another (parallel) dimension....
It’s the story of a movie that is a visual and emotional experience for the viewer who, like Julie, is called to begin a travel to a world that follows different rules and laws but that enters the actual daily reality without cuts or breaks in continuity. A fantastic, charming, appealing, intelligent movie whose originality stands also (and mainly) in the writing method (the screenplay is extemporary and co-worked with the actresses themselves while the story is influenced by the literary artworks of Lewis Carroll, Henry James and others). The result is a naive "playful lightness" (e.g. to enter the outer dimension it's enough a magic candy) that balences between joke and seriousness (if, at a more attentive vision, the movie's structure shows us many non-casual refinements). At its initial release the movie was considered by the critics as a fine reflexion on the cinema as "representation and hallucination" but, I can observe, the movie saves, also nowadays, a sort of "paradoxical freshness" the clever director regained nevermore this way.
