I did a fair amount of knitting in December with no clear goals, just to be knitting and not thinking about things (2023 was not a good year and bit me one more time a week before Christmas). I recently finished up a couple of my distraction projects and actually photographed them (halfassedly) so I'm posting them about here and there.
Buttercup Miniatures Noel sweater (advent calendar 2020) that I knit in the round. I still had to sew in the sleeves and the collar and I refuse to look to closely at either. My knitting is fine, but sewing seams with no selvedge and in dark yarn that fuzzes up if you look at it funny is more than I can deal with right now. But at least it answered the question of whether or not I could get it over Abbey's head! Lionbrand Amazing Lace yarn on US0 (2mm) needles.
This one was more knitting just to be knitting than even the last one. I just wanted to know how large the hexagon would turn out with Amazing Lace and size 1 (2.25mm) needles. I just knit the rest of the sweater for the fun of knitting it and expected it to be too large for my ~45cm dolls and too small for my ~65cm ones. Turns out acceptably "big comfy" on Rico (Dollzone Feilan, body b45-001),
The pattern is basically my Snow Bunny (free) which is pretty much a collage of Norah Gaughan's work. This time I used her Brea bag pattern's hexagon rather than her snowflake cable. I did make modifications which I detail in my Ravelry project page (account required for that I think).
I'll probably end up revising Snow Bunny for deeper hem ribbing like this eventually.

Lo nuevo de Revistas en Strummer
La banda de noise pop tocó su nuevo disco en Buenos Aires

En 2021 lanzaron su disco debut: Drama, una carta de presentación a pura guitarra, teclados seductores, noise pop, indie rock y estribillos coreables. Tres años después y con el respaldo de incontables escenarios recorridos junto a un grupo de seguidores que no para de crecer, Revistas volvió al ruedo de las grabaciones con un nuevo disco de pronto lanzamiento.
El pasado viernes 12 de abril, la banda reunió a los suyos en el segundo turno de Strummer para tocar en exclusiva el nuevo material entero.
A pesar de la lluvia sostenida que pintó de gris la capital porteña, sobre las 23 horas el público se fue acercando a Strummer (el bar de los Attaque 77, en el barrio de Palermo); cruzándose con la más joven convocatoria que abandonaba el primer turno "matiné" del local.
¿La ocasión? El estreno exclusivo de las nuevas canciones de Revistas y, de yapa, una nueva visita de Delfines Entrenados Para Matar a la ciudad.
Delfines Entrenados Para Matar
La banda que ostenta orgullosa el título de mejor-nombre-de-banda-post-punkdemia, fue la elegida para abrir la fecha, luego de anotarse más de 20 presentaciones en 2023 y empezar el 2024 con la agenda cargada.
Con una onda newwave y el teclado como capitán del barco, DEPM recorre influencias y sonoridades en auje dentro de la escena, con una versatilidad y destreza envidiables. De a ratos sónicos, surfers y hasta un poco glam, los Delfines atrapan en la vorágine delirante de sus canciones y la cuidadosa caraduría de su performance.
En "Cafeína", el nombre de la banda se corea como un grito de cancha. Confiados en un equipo que suena sólido y ensayado, apoyándose en su frontman Marcial para seducir al público, los DEPM llevan orgullosos la casaca de la ciudad de las diagonales, como demostraron preguntando "¿Conocen alguna banda de La Plata?" antes de sorprender con una versión de "Soy moderno, no fumo" de Virus.
El set contudente fue material de sobra para reclutar tres nuevos fanáticos en el equipo de Arde. Detrás de bambalinas, conversaciones fueron iniciadas—allanado el terreno al descubrirse una pasión común por Motosierra y Hablan Por la Espalda—para traer a los platenses a Uruguay. Los delfines atravesarán el Río de la Plata a la brevedad.
Revistas
A sala llena y con presencia de colegas varios (La Real Academia y WRRN estuvieron entre los avistamientos), Revistas abrazó su nueva era con una verdadera clase de noise pop. Sin spoilear demasiado, la banda tiene entre manos un disco con gran protagonismo de los teclados, en sintonía con la primera banda de la noche.
Hay mucho groove en el bajo, sintetizadores y fuzz. En esta nueva etapa Revistas no se priva de absolutamente nada: subir la distorsión, acelerar las baterias o coquetear con cadencias de teclas y riffs más envolventes. Las letras, cortitas y al pie, mantienen la esencia coreable de la banda, como adelantaron los singles ya disponibles, en especial "El Deseo".
En el vivo, el intercambio de roles dentro de la banda hace a un dinamismo melódico extremadamente rico: si bien el bajista es quien se encarga de la gran mayoría de voces, guitarra y teclado tienen también su momento frente al micrófono, añadiendo distintas capas al clima de distorsión.
Entre tantas nuevas canciones, "Ausencia" es coreada por el público como ese clásico infaltable, seguida de cerca por "¿Qué Importa?", el último adelanto publicado y también el elegido para cerrar la noche. Resta esperar el lanzamiento del disco para llevar nuevas melodías revisteras a todos lados.

Kowalski: Judging by the architecture, variance in body type and multi-level traffic, it appears we are on Coruscant. Given the number of identical armored soldiers, we seem to arrived during the Clone Wars.
Private: Ooh, ooh! We can stop the war and save everyone!
Skipper: Slow your roll, Private. Prioritize! We need to focus on what's really important. Kowalski! What's our nearest source of lightsabers?
Kowalski: That would be the Senate dome, sir. Chancellor Palpatine is in possession of two.
Skipper: Let's go!

I do not speak spanish but I know a little bit about it & I speak french so does anyone want to read an excerpt my crappy rough draft of a fic?

Too bad here it is:
Esposito set the plates down on the coffee table & went to grab the pot. Ryan was sitting on the sofa already, turning on the subtitles for the movie they had decided upon. Esposito portioned out scoops of rice onto each plate, pork, peas, vegetables, & spice made an enticing aroma. Ryan sat crosslegged under a blanket & let his knee rest against Esposito.
"Really?" Ryan asked. "You make me the national dish of Puerto Rico?"
Esposito made a disapproving look, mouth long across his face & eyebrows low. He blinked. "My mother knows how to make anything. I've only got a few recipes under my belt."
Ryan chuckled & took a sip from his water glass before picking up a forkful of arroz con gandules. "How's Mami doing, by the way?"
Esposito covered his mouth politely to speak while eating, "She's good, I was going to call her this weekend but do you want to talk with her now?"
The man already had his phone out & Ryan actually felt like yeah, he did want to talk to Mami.
"Hola chico! Comme estas?" Mami's voice fuzzed through the speaker on the phone.
"Hola Mami. Kevin esta la, nous parlos ingles, por favor?"
Esposito's mom let out a coo & switched languages. "Keviiin! How are you?"
Ryan grinned at her enthusiasm. "Soy bien, Mami. Javi just made dinner & we're about to watch a movie."
"Ahhhhhh! Nothing too bad I hope!"
The boys laughed at her concern. Esposito assured her that they were being responsible & Ryan asked her, "& como estas, Mami? How is swimming going?"
The sweet woman cooed again, "Amazing! The water gives me the support I need & I love the aerobics with the chiquitas."
Esposito beamed & congratulated her. "Well, we'd better let you go, we just wanted to say hi."
Esposito's mom solemnly gave an "Ahhhh," & thanked them for calling. "Muchos bisous, Kevin, Muchos bisous, Javier!" She gave them each a kiss through the phone, the boys bid goodbye simultaneously, & they ended the call.
The boys smiled, filled with warmth from Mami's love.
I spent over four hours writing yesterday, initially as a joke trying to see if talk-to-transformer would be able to continue my fic. I just fed it smth small to see what it would say & it was funny & not right at all, but then I tried a larger chunk, & with the context it was able to write my a single sentence that I actually liked the gist of, so I changed it to actually work with my fic & started genuinely writing. I got on a roll & started writing from 22 or 23 last night, maybe even midnight, until 4.30 in the morning. Then I woke up about half past 11, had breakfast, listened to a song, got my computer set up, & started writing at around noon. I stopped writing at about 16.30.
Now here's the thing, I did a lot of copy-pasting around & so the formatting got wonky, I sometimes use initials instead of typing out someone's full name to save time & I can ctrl-h it later, there are many points when it is me talking not the character's voices, & the plot kind of got sideways. Not to mention, sometimes I leave notes to myself or parts of the plan/outline in the fic.
I could really use a beta reader. I know the story too well & would end up skimming.
I also know that I am not likely to fix things like "why did he tell beckett so easliy but hide it from castito?" & "why would I delete my casefic part? i worked hard on it!" or alternatively "Why would I finish the case part of it? This is not a casefic, it is about people & characters & relationships" I'd just leave it as-is.

Las Ardillas — Canciones de Amor, Locura y Muerte (Slovenly)
ARDILLAS "Canciones de Amor, Locura y Muerte" LP by Ardillas
Las Ardillas shares some members with Davila 666, one of Puerto Rico’s finest punk garage outfits, and both bands are known for fiery, if intermittent, releases. It’s been ten years since Las Ardillas made a record. In 2019, when Davila 666 re-emerged with a single, they had been away for half a decade. But no matter, these five rock-n-rollers manage to keep the flame alive between times. They lead with a giant Spector-esque kick drum swaggering through Ramones-sweet, Ramones-prickly agitated garage punk, the chorus triumphant and begging for a sing-along, even if you have stumble through it in grade school Spanish.
The album title translates as “Songs of Love, Madness and Death,” and indeed, every track on this 10-song album feels like a grand romantic gesture. From the blustery ache of “Linda Niña” to the pensive thump of “Canción Para Ti,” these are songs about busted but persistent passions, couched in the fuzz-banked, bass-blared language of Nuggets rock. It’s a party, obviously, but one with heartache in the corners.
What’s magic about this disc is how locked in these guys are to each other, how naturally they support and expand on rough, bravado-fueled ideas. Listen, for instance, to how the guitars crash down onto “¿Por Qué Tan Lejos?”’s superlative bassline, how the chorus erupts from the verse like a natural growth, how a shout of “woo-ha-hey” fits precisely into the gap left by verses. It’s rough and glorious, but also absolutely fits together, like it would if you’d playing with the same guys your whole life and had no secrets anymore.
I like the thunder-y singsong of “¿Por Qué Tan Lejos?” where drums pummel the beat and the vocal parts seem to taunt each other and the guitar solo is rockabilly incendiary, but short, so that you miss it when it’s gone. I like the flamenco flourishes of “La Ruta” and the way they fold into surf-a-billy mayhem and a ringing “whoa-oh-oh chorus” from a spaghetti western. This isn’t super complicated stuff, but it doesn’t get stuck in a rut. And, no question it rocks, in the most entertaining sort of way. What else do you need?
