Micro-Story: You Did This
Story Content and Summary - 1,756 words. A story in second person, present tense, with an ungendered protagonist. What did you do to her? Hints of past trauma, non-graphic descriptions of violence. On-site resuscitation. 🏳️‍🌈
--
You’ve gone over this before.
“If I oversleep, it’s on me. Don’t try to wake me up. My dad used to wake me up…” You pause. She knows; you don’t need to hash it out again. “Nevermind, just don’t wake me up, okay? I don’t want to hurt you.”
Your thoughts turn dark then, thinking about the time you hurt your brother when he woke you up for school. A bloodied nose that looked fine in a few days. You never stopped feeling bad about it.
Your girlfriend holds your hand and promises to let your alarm wake you.
Sleeping together is something you refused to do for a long time, but she eventually won out. The fact that sleeping next to her is okay makes little sense. But you like it, and it helps her. She’s medically fragile, prone to respiratory problems and POTS. You carry her when she can’t stand without fainting. You bring her inhaler when she has difficulty breathing. Hold her when her medications make her sick or sad.
Tonight isn’t much different from other nights, except Gemma brings in a few outdoor decorations and you flip the patio table over onto its top. The weather forecast told you to expect strong winds and a thunderstorm sometime around two in the morning. At ten, Gemma goes to bed. You follow her an hour later, your hand briefly resting on her back to feel her breathing. She’d sounded a little wheezy earlier.
Then you fall asleep, soothed by the rhythm of her breath.
The next thing you know, lightning cracks overhead and the room fills with white light. Someone looms over you and in a panic you grab them by the throat and wrench them down onto the bed, rolling and thrashing. You plant your knee into their stomach, your breath coming hard and fast as you lean over them. Your heart races. The body under you bucks once or twice before it stops putting up much of a fight. As time passes, confusion replaces the fear.
Light flashes through the room again and you see the person stretched out beneath you, eyes rolled back so that all you see is sclera, dark hair fanned out around her head on the pillow.
Gemma.
“Oh my God!” you yelp, your hands immediately releasing her throat. You practically spring off her, crouching beside her on the mattress. Rain beats down onto the roof as you reach for the bedside lamp.
Click. Click.
Click.
The lamp doesn’t turn on, and you briefly wonder if the power is out before you realize Gemma isn’t moving.
“Gemma!” You call her name quietly at first, finding her arm in the dark and shaking it. She makes a wheezing sound that’s barely audible over the storm and you start babbling. “GEMMA! Oh my God, Gemma! Are you okay? Can you breathe? Baby?”
You have to grab your phone off the nightstand and use it as a flashlight to see her face. Her eyes are cracked open, but she isn’t moving. When you rest your hand on her stomach, then her chest, you can’t feel it move. Finally, you lean your head over her mouth. Her lips are slack, parted.
She’s not breathing.
You did this.
“Oh, no, no, no…” Your worst nightmare, and in your panic you aren’t sure what to do. If the power is off, you can’t call for help from your cell; there’s only service here when you have Wi-Fi. You still have a landline, but it’s in the kitchen.
In the meantime, Gemma needs air. You’ve taken a CPR class for work, but it’s been close to a decade and you really haven’t thought about it since. Flashes of memory hit you: head-tilt, chin-lift. You push the pillows off the bed and carefully open her airway. You just have to hope her neck is okay. You pinch her nose closed with your thumb and index finger and use the thumb of your other hand to open her mouth.
Her lips are soft when you cover them with yours. You take a deep breath through your nose and blow into her mouth. You feel her cheeks expand, but the room is too dark to be sure her chest rises. When you remove your mouth, there’s a thwock sound and a soft exhale against your face.
“Gemma!” you call out, shaking her again before you breathe for her again.
You did this.
She exhales but doesn’t draw a breath, and now you have a choice to make. Keep breathing for her, take her pulse, or run for the phone.
Your brain vetoes the second option immediately; you seem to remember that laypeople are notoriously bad at pulses, and what if you felt something, but it wasn’t enough? Then, before you realize you’re going to do it, you launch yourself off the bed and stumble out of the bedroom. You slam your shoulder against the doorframe even though you grew up in this house and on a normal night you don’t have to turn on the light to take a piss.
When you get to the kitchen, you knock the handset off the cradle and fumble to catch it. The lights aren’t on behind the buttons as you press them, part of you knowing there will be no dial tone as you press the earpiece to your ear. This happened once before; lightning struck the phone line and traveled into the house, frying the computer modem and taking out both the phone and the power.
The handset slips from your grasp, and you bolt back to the bedroom.
You’re too rough with her body as you scoop Gemma up, rough with her even though being rough with her is the reason she’s in this condition. You just know that you can’t perform CPR on a bed, and that no help is coming, and that if you had been able to call for help, they would have given her medicine and maybe shocks from a defibrillator. Things you can’t give her.
You did this, so you lay her flat on the cold hardwood floor, reopen her airway, and give her another breath. She exhales, but her half-lidded eyes are still glinting at you in the dark. Judging you. Yes, you told her not to wake you, but there must have been a reason—
Tap. Tap-tap. Tap.
You shift to the side and your knee lands in water.
The roof is leaking, and it’s the clearest and fastest realization you’ve had since awakening.
Another breath, and your eyes are leaking like the roof. You beg: “Breathe, Gemma!” And then you think you probably have to give her chest compressions, because you don’t know if her heart is beating and maybe the power will come back on and there will still be time.
You did this, so now you have to do more.
You find her ribcage in the dark, tracing shaking fingers along the curve of her bones until you find the center. Your hands stack on top of her sternum, fingers interlocking. Then you roll your shoulders over your hands and shove the heel of your bottom hand down into her chest.
Her ribcage shifts under your hands, and she lets out a hoarse huff of air. You don’t count out loud, but the numbers fly through your mind in a terrible countdown to thirty. Lightning arcs across the sky and you see her chest sink as your hands press down, her stomach rounding. Her tank top is thin and her breasts wobble each time you pump her chest.
“Huh, huh, huh…”
Nineteen, twenty, twenty-one…
You did this, so you thrust your hands into her ailing heart until you hit thirty chest compressions. Breathing for her comes naturally now, already, like you’ve been breathing for her forever, will breathe for her forever. Her face feels fragile as you cradle her head. Your own cheeks round out and you leave tears and saliva on her face when you break the seal to let her exhale. Another breath. You shift to start chest compressions, only to hear an unexpected sound.
Gemma inhales.
A small sound. The breath is shallow and wheezy on the exhale. You wait. And wait. And wait. There isn’t another breath, so you hunch over and say loudly: “BREATHE, GEMMA!” But she doesn’t, so you cover her mouth with yours and exhale into her. Her chest rises beneath the hand you’ve rested there, falls when you lift your mouth.
Another breath, the only sounds your desperate inhalations and exhalations, skin brushing skin, and the pitter-patter of water hitting the floor.
You wonder if you imagined the breath, so you landmark again and thrust her sternum down. She makes a harsher gasping sound, but you keep pumping, worried that this is just part of what you’ve done to her and if you don’t give her chest compressions, she will die.
Nine, ten, eleven, twelve…
Her chest is stiff under your hands but it still gives to the pressure, sinking and recoiling. The air you gave her escapes in puffs that carry the barest hint of her voice.
“Huh, huh, huh…”
Nineteen, twenty, twenty-one…
You did this, so you are shocked when she suddenly coughs. Your hands pause. She gasps, and your hands lift, hovering just above her chest. The exhale squeaks out of her, and she takes another breath.
“Gemma? Gemma!” Your hands are on her face now, and you can feel her eyelashes fluttering against your palm. You slide your hands down and cup her cheeks. “I’m so sorry! I’m sorry, baby! I’m sorry!”
She’s breathing now, you’re sure she is, and her body trembles beneath you. You drag the comforter off the bed, drape it over her shaking limbs. Fish her spare inhaler from the nightstand, though she seems too disoriented to use it. You’re babbling again, narrating your every move as tears streak your cheeks. You can’t remember the last time you cried, but you’re nearly sobbing now.
You shine the light from your phone over her, just the front screen so she isn’t blinded. She looks frightened, staring up at you with wide eyes. She’s crying, too.
You did this, so you set the phone down and reach for her hands. You need to take her to the hospital soon, but for now, you let her rest. You sag, sitting hard on the floor beside her. You’re shaking harder than she is.
You did this, and you wonder if she’ll ever forgive you.

I know it’s not that bad, fungi and algae are worse (dear god) but I came from micro which is like mitosis and/or meiosis. Cyanobacteria don’t even have sex. Sometimes there are endospores or fragmentation with things but then you’re done. This cycle doesn’t even include fragmentation or gemmae.

[ad_1] Researchers in Lund have came upon an antitoxin mechanism that turns out as a way to neutralise masses of various toxins and might offer protection to micro organism in opposition to virus assaults. The mechanism has been named Panacea, after the Greek goddess of medication whose identify has turn out to be synonymous with common treatment. The figuring out of bacterial toxin and antitoxin mechanisms might be the most important for the longer term good fortune of so-called phage remedy for the remedy of antibiotic resistance infections, the researchers say. The find out about has been revealed in PNAS. So-called toxin-antitoxin programs, a type of on-off transfer in lots of bacterial DNA genomes, are increasingly more being discovered to protect micro organism in opposition to assault by means of bacteriophages -- viruses that infect micro organism. Activation of poisons lets in bacterial populations to enter a type of lockdown that limits enlargement and due to this fact the unfold of the virus. As such, figuring out the range, mechanisms and evolution of those programs is significant for the eventual good fortune of phage remedy to regard antibiotic resistance infections. -- Toxin-antitoxin pairs include a gene encoding a toxin that dramatically inhibits bacterial enlargement and an adjoining gene encoding an antitoxin that counteracts the poisonous impact. It's like protecting a bottle of poison on a shelf subsequent to a bottle of the antidote. Whilst toxin-antitoxin pairs had been noticed to adapt to go along with new toxins or antitoxins earlier than, the size of the neutralisation skill noticed with Panacea -- so known as hyperpromiscuity -- is unparalleled, explains researcher and staff chief Gemma Atkinson at Lund College, who has led the find out about. PhD pupil and co-first writer Chayan Kumar Saha made a pc program for analysing the sorts of genes which can be discovered subsequent to one another in bacterial genomes. The workforce then used this instrument to expect new antitoxin genes discovered subsequent to a couple very potent toxins that they have got prior to now labored on. "We had been startled by means of the invention that one specific antitoxin protein fold will also be present in toxin-antitoxin-like preparations with dozens of various sorts of toxins. Many of those toxins are new to science." The opposite first writer Tatsuaki Kurata, Lund College, has showed experimentally that a number of of those programs are authentic toxins neutralized by means of the neighbouring antitoxin genes. The find out about displays that what we all know thus far in regards to the range of toxin-antitoxin programs most certainly is simply the top of the iceberg, and that there can be a vary of equivalent programs that experience long past underneath the radar till now. -- In addition to being essential for figuring out the strange global of bacterial biochemistry, the invention of recent toxin-antitoxin programs is essential for so-called phage remedy in opposition to antibiotic resistant infections. As micro organism have increasingly more turn out to be proof against antibiotics, different approaches are wanted for getting rid of infections. The primary of phage remedy is to regard sufferers with cocktails of bacteriophages -- viruses that infect micro organism -- so as to kill the micro organism inflicting an infection. Then again micro organism lift quite a lot of defence programs to offer protection to themselves from phages, and this contains toxin-antitoxin programs. "Thus figuring out toxin-antitoxin programs of pathogens might assist us someday design phage remedy that may counter this residue of defence," explains Gemma Atkinson. So, what's the subsequent analysis step? "We at the moment are looking for novel toxin-antitoxin programs on a common scale, and perceive their involvement in phage defence. We also are all in favour of imaginable biotechnological packages of toxin-antitoxin programs, for the
reason that those programs will also be considered on-off switches of core sides of bacterial biology. The whole set of toxin-antitoxin programs can be a molecular toolbox for tweaking bacterial metabolism and controlling bacterial cellular sources. This will also be essential in business and pharmaceutical manufacture scenarios the place micro organism are used to provide molecules of passion." Tale Supply: Materials equipped by means of Lund University. Unique written by means of Agata Garpenlind. Observe: Content material is also edited for taste and duration. raven’s been sitting in front of her computer screen for so long there is a slight strain on her vision, but she refuses to give up. she’s editing a video short that she produced, and it has to get done by a certain deadline so that she can send it in to one of the local film festivals. reaching for a pen, she puts the end into her mouth and bites down, a sensory thing more than anything - but it seemingly does scratch the itch and she’s able to continue with her work.
gemma is in the other room grading papers, both girls burning the midnight oil in two very different instances. raven’s work is self-indulgent whilst gemma’s is altogether self-less, doing good for the community whilst her sister is doing good for the sake of her own sanity. horror has always been a big part of raven’s life growing up - she spent far too many hours watching slasher films when she was just a wee one ( their father allowing her to stay up late, because she never got scared, and he didn’t see the harm in it - except when their mother found out and he got quite the tongue lashing. )
she’s got a few edits left to make, but she needs fresh eyes on the subject, so she pushes up from her desk and grabs the half-drank can of redbull, bringing it to her lips for a quick sip before going to knock on her sister’s office door. she doesn’t await an answer and simply barges in, leaning against the doorframe with a smile on her face.
“so….i need to borrow you for a few minutes. i’m on the final cut and i need and value your opinion, so can you please put the papers to rest for a lil’ bit and come help me.” she places the can of redbull down so that she can put her hands together in a pleading motion, bringing out the eternal weapon, the puppy dog eyes. the way gemma rolls her own and laughs makes raven feel successful, and if she wasn’t in front of her sister, there would have been a fist in the air to celebrate.
( okay so gemma already knows how dorky she is - she doesn’t need a constant reminder. )
leading gemma into the other room, she pulls out the chair for her sister to sit. “your throne, madam,” she says, before wheeling her in front of the screen and pressing play. raven watches for the micro-expressions on her sister’s face during the preview, wanting to capture every single one of them for later reference and dissection. when the short, eight minute film is concluded, she spins gemma around a bit too excitedly, and kneels down in front of @woodridgehollow.
“so, whaddya think? be honest.” she says, pointing out a finger as if to emphasize her statement. “i’m like...actually proud of this’un.”

Pipoca de micro-ondas: M3GAN
Tumblr media

Desculpa a demora, anjo.
Espero que goste!

STUCK WITH YOU.
— Harry Edward Styles!
— Harry quis saber, observando-a colocar a janta no micro-ondas.
— Franziu a testa rindo.

So, what drew me to the blog was how interesting your blog looked. And I love Arthur, he’s such an interesting character. What made me stay was how amazing you write, it’s like you are him. (I mean that in a good way.) You bring life to him and give him so much to say without even having to have him speak a word. The way you capture his thoughts and micro movements is amazing. And extremely inspiring. When I read your writing, I hear him, and it’s exciting to see what you come up with! Keep it up! You’re amazing!
What drew you to my blog initially, and what, so far, has made you stay?

Omg, Adelle, this was SO very sweet of you to say. I can't thank you enough for this; it makes me feel so good to know that people feel as if my portrayal mimics him enough to feel realistic! I work so hard to bring his mannerisms and thoughts into my portrayal because he is not a man of many words, but a man of expression through a vast range of visual ques, raw emotions and flurries of internal thoughts. I've always found expressing those details and thoughts extremely important when it comes to pulling together what makes Arthur, Arthur. It makes me feel very proud to see that aspect of my writing actively being noticed and I want to thank you for that! I cannot talk enough about how much I enjoy the amount of detail that you've put into Gemma. She is perhaps one of the most well rounded OCs that I've come across; you have written out every aspect of her so well and that's so admirable. It takes so long to build an OC in the ways that you have and your work on her truly transpires into everything that you write. You, as a person, are one of the muns I talk to more often (I know I can be rather quiet at times, but you still stick with me and I thank you!) but I thoroughly enjoy our conversations. You make plotting come easy and you're such a joy to chat with. Thank you for being such a wonderful friend and bringing the rpc such a great character!

Is 2x07 your favorite because of villaneve (ear)phone sex?
I could write a whole essay on why 2x07 appeals so much to me specifically
I know no one likes Aaron, but I love him. I relate to him a lot (minus the murder and the billion dollars). I’m obsessed with his speech about how he never gets lonely, has no desire for human interaction, and would rather observe people’s lives from afar. I’m the same way, and he’s the only other person real or fictional I’ve ever seen who also doesn’t experience loneliness.
Rome. I studied Latin and Classical Culture in college.
Villanelle gorging on pasta, my favorite food. It’s soo satisfying watching her absolutely stuff her face. I completely understand Aaron’s weird kink.
The bread hand touch.
Bread in general. I would also like to watch Villanelle eat bread and ice cream and chocolate and pasta. Those are the best food groups. Again, Aaron’s onto something.
Eve fixing her hair for Villanelle before going to give her the mic.
The atelier jacket is one of my fave Villanelle outfits.
I also enjoy the outfit Villanelle first wears when she gets to Rome. And the outfit she wears to the lunch date. Billie’s outfits are on point the whole episode, and I love that scene of Villanelle being amazed by all her new clothes in Rome.
I love Billie.
“I don’t like rich men.”
“I will not be needing the pill.”
“Ugh, get a room” and the way you can hear Villanelle’s wet smile after she says it.
The way Villanelle asks for the shepherd's pie recipe and then repeats all the ingredients to herself under her breath to memorize it.
“Always close the curtains. You never know what kind of pervert might be outside.”
“See? That wasn’t so hard was it?” ‘Are you going to leave us alone now?” “Of course not. Why don’t you sit down.”
“The sexy maths teacher.”
Eve’s wide awake speech was Sandra’s best scene of the entire season. The way she doesn’t blink because she’s so focused on the convo and so ready to talk about Villanelle. The tears of intensity. “Are you in a relationship?” “Define relationship.” It’s so powerful.
The earpiece sex!!
The morning after softness!!
Just the fact that we got that (micro)phone sex was absolutely wild. That’s still the sexiest Villaneve have ever been, and that “good morning” and snuggle into the pillows rivals some of the best 3x08 softness. I can’t believe how blessed we were.
Edward Bluemel in his underwear. (I’m gay, but he’s my exception, don’t judge. It’s not straight if I say #NoHetero)
Hugo’s stupid smile and “hey” when he wakes up
Eve’s absolute disdain for Hugo’s entire existence when he says “hey”
“Thanks for the threesome”
Villanelle’s threesome in the beginning of the episode. That whole first scene is fabulous. The slapstick of the girls interrupting them one by one. Jealous Eve. “Thank you.” “For the sex? You’re welcome!” The sexiness of “I’m not with them when I’m with them” and the emotion of “I feel things when I’m with you.” Villanelle’s robe. “I’m not dressed.” “I don’t care.” The framing. The acting. Literally every second of that scene is a masterpiece.
Villanelle having an alley cat for 2 seconds (cats > dogs fight me)
Carolyn asking the same questions for Eve and Villanelle “Any escalation, increased attention seeking, recklessness?”
That beautifully creepy shot of Carolyn in the mirror hovering over Kenny as he watches Eve leave their house.
The way Aaron drags that poor closeted gay dude for watching Gossip Girl with his boyfriend and the way Villanelle just watches on enjoying the tea as she eats her meal and pretends she doesn’t understand Russian.
Villanelle singing and Hugo bopping along.
Hugo being a bi king calling Aaron “not bad looking”
Eve “He Could Kill the Shit out of Me” Polastri getting horny for some rando psycho dude and liking him even more when she finds out he’s killed people. It’s so fresh to see her openly flirting with someone other than Niko and really marked a turning point in their relationship. It wasn’t just that Villanelle was her exception, it was that she was a completely changed person willing to flirt with a psychopath and take advantage Hugo “Human Dildo” Chambers/Turner/Tiller just because she felt like it.
In the same vein, Hugo changing and saying “Don’t watch me. I know what you’re like” and Eve being offended because he’s right lmao
“Cooped up in a hotel room with nothing to do. How will we pass the time?”
“Set up everything in here.” “Why’s it got to be in my room?” “Because I don’t want all this shit in my room.” I love selfish Eve.
I think 2x07 was actually the peak of Dark Eve. Sure she kills someone in 2x08 and again in 3x07, but she kind of regrets it both times or at least feels guilty. In 2x07 she’s taking advantage of people and manipulating them and giving in to her own desires without a care in the world. She stands up to Villanelle when she gets jealous, she ignores Kenny’s warnings because she wants to see Villanelle, she sends herself and Hugo to Rome knowing its dangerous because she wants to see Villanelle, she flirts with the murder dude, she makes the conversation with the therapist about herself because she wants to indulge, she gets impatient with the Peel case and is quick to insult Hugo every time he disagrees with her methods, she doesn’t care when Hugo gets upset about being out of the loop with the threesome (the 2x08 coffee scene where Hugo is pissy about the night before and Eve’s only concern is that her coffee is cold has strong 2x07 energy and is an honorable mention scene). She doesn’t give a fuck about anyone but herself and Villanelle the whole episode and it’s beautiful.
“What happened to her profile?!” “I don’t know, maybe you shouldn’t have fired Kenny!”
I love Hugo with my whole heart. Aside from Aaron, Hugo is the second character I see the most of myself in. I relate to his sense of humor and I think I would probably be some rich posh douchebag boy like him in an alternate dimension. I love that he gets featured so much in the episode, and it’s really his character’s climactic episode. He finally gets to succeed in his missions of banging Eve and taking down Aaron before going down in 2x08. I just like seeing my boy happy.
Villanelle having that really stylish gorgeous piano that I wish I could have.
Eve leaving those voicemails for Villanelle and Villanelle laying down, listening to them, and stroking her scar with that giddy smile on her face.
Villanelle packing her suitcase by balling everything up and throwing it in there and then acting surprised when Konstantin finds razor wire.
The directing juxtaposition of Villanelle and Aaron entering Aaron’s (STUNNING) palazzo and Eve and Hugo checking in to their grubby hotel.
The cheeky face Hugo makes when the receptionist mistakes Eve and Hugo for a couple.
The way you completely forget about Niko and Gemma in the storage unit until the very end of the episode when you least expect it and it shows you their fate as a shocking cliffhanger juxtaposed with the morning after Villaneve softness in the scene immediately before it. What a rollercoaster. What a way to end on a high note.
Gemma’s murder is probably the most gruesome murder of the show for me. Not that I enjoy gruesome murder, but it’s another aspect of the episode that really stands out. Her face in that bag? Genuinely creepy. Yet the fragile tape is funny. It’s a great example of that blend of comedy and darkness that makes this show so unique.
The pink and black title card is one of the best opening color schemes of the whole show.
“Non Voglio Piu Rivederti” by Paola Neri and
“Vai Tu Sei Libero” by Dalida are songs I listen to regularly
This list is an unorganized hot mess and I probably missed stuff, but you get my point.
There’s not a single weak spot in the episode. From the acting, the directing, the writing, the music, the costumes, the set design, I love every moment of every scene, and I can’t believe Emerald Fennel wrote it just for me.

September Week 2 Micro!
Does your muse know multiple languages? What is their mother tongue? What drove them to learn more than one? How fluent are they? Can they read and write in all of the languages they know? Or can they only speak and understand these other languages?
Tumblr media
While in DELTA force, operatives needed to learn to blend in, anywhere. The ability to hide in plain sight was a high priority, so to do so, many of the operatives had to learn many languages. Several languages Gemma knows are; Defense Language Aptitude Battery (DLAB), Russian, Arabic, French, Spanish, Farsi, Dari, Latin, conversational Chinese (meaning she can hold a conversation but does not have mastery over the language). She also learned; C, C++, Java, Binary, and Assembly because she is a huge nerd. Each of these languages helped her blend in during most operations. However, her mother tongue is English. But, while she knows how to speak all of these languages, the only ones she can write in are Spanish, French, and Russian. (And the computer languages, but you type those, so I don’t think that counts haha). There are many other languages out there that Gemma would love to learn. Though throughout time, Gemma might forget how to speak a few of these because of lack of use in the field or because of the effects of the chair on her brain.

"Open 2021 is a rolling programme of events being created by the school's staff and students, which reflect the varied design approaches of the School of Architecture and Cities and their place at the heart of London.
"It will feature 750 student projects, drawing on the vast body of developmental and finished work imagined and realised over the course of the last academic year. The show will transform student work into digital assets, creating an extraordinary display of new architecture and a compelling visitor experience. The show opens on 17 June until 30 September."
The Bioengineering Experimental School of Architecture: Designing for the Prevention of Fires by Momchil Petrinski
"In this project, the notion of 'fire' from the laboratory experiments serves multiple purposes, from the 'gallery' for public knowledge, heat distribution to the surrounding buildings and the cultivation of the green spaces.
"The dense urban site of Little Britain and proposed Tower is approached as a Borgesian labyrinth where the ever-green public gardens extend across the horizontal and vertical landscapes, and resting places for the homeless community are embedded within the public realm."
Student: Momchil Petrinski Course: Architecture BA (Hons) Tutors: Constance Lau and Stephen Harty Email: [email protected]
Ideal Landscape from Luo Shen Fu Tu by Yunuo Zheng
"The proposal is a spatial narrative telling the ancient Chinese story of the painting Luo Shen Fu Tu created by the famous Eastern Jin painter Gu Kaizhi based on the plot of Cao Chi's work Luo Shen Fu.
"This is not just a love story – it is a story of frustration and anger caused by feudalism when people could only express thoughts and feelings through landscapes and myths. It is these landscapes and myths that give the form to an immersive exhibition situated in London."
Student: Yunuo Zheng Course:  Interior Architecture BA (Hons) Tutors: Ro Spankie, Diony Kypraiou, Allan Sylvester, Ana Araujo Email: [email protected]
Intercultural communal living as a catalyst for refugee integration by Anne-Flore Smits
"Nature avoids monocultures and lives in diversity to feed its system. The harmonious living between living forms is known as symbiosis. Through intercultural communal living, symbiosis is regenerated, where the forgotten lives of refugees can integrate back into society.
"With local and foreign amalgamation, the most vulnerable group in society can write their futures. The design of social-communal connectivity incorporates multi-use courtyards, creating a unique spatial arrangement within the male and female quarter and central community compound.
"A common roof with various environmental qualities ensures the proposed and established buildings receive minimal solar radiation, that is experienced in its extreme within Cameroon's Far North capital of Maroua."
Student: Anne-Flore Smits Course: Architecture and Environmental Design BSc (Hons) Tutors: Paolo Cascone and Panagiota Adileniduo Email: [email protected]
Ark for an Ant Tribe by Yuen-Wah Williams
"This project addresses the acute housing needs of well educated but income poor young people who come to Beijing to seek their future – affectionately known as the 'Ant Tribe' in China.
"The project is a co-living mega-block with floating courtyards, rooftop running tracks, and community programmes open to the broader neighbourhood at the ground level. The novel tectonics draws inspiration from traditional low-rises, high-density Hutong courtyards and local experiments in soviet-era social condensers.
"The generous and intensely social outdoor spaces become rooms in themselves, responds to the changing patterns of life in a pandemic."
Student: Yuen-Wah Williams Course: Architecture BA (Hons) Tutors: John Zhang and David Porter Email: [email protected]
Climb Air Theatre by Zhiqing He
"The conditions of isolation and lack of physical interaction due to the pandemic gave birth to this project with the aim of evoking memories of intimate communication stemming from the past. Inspired by The Phantom of the Opera, London's historic musical production (forced to close during the lockdown),  the proposal suggests an open interactive theatre, situated at St Dustan park in London.
"The audience gets invited to follow actors through the theatre's three main theatre stages and participate in distinct moments of the play while re-connecting them to each other through this musical, theatrical and spatial journey."
Student: Zhiqing He Course: Interior Architecture BA (Hons) Tutors: Ro Spankie, Diony Kypraiou, Allan Sylvester, Ana Araujo Email: [email protected]
The Arch Climbing Wall by Tom McGinnity
"The Arch Climbing Wall is located in Bermondsey, London. The redeveloped climbing centre uses all the existing building while also developing a new building adjacent to the existing one. The design aims to highlight the connection between climbing and nature.
"New climbing walls were positioned in the existing building to create an environment of valleys and mountains. The new building acts as the final challenge, with climbers able to scale the exterior of the building and the tall structure within. The new building is open-air with large use of open mesh, allowing climbers to connect with nature."
Student: Tom McGinnity Course: Architectural Technology BSc (Hons) Tutors: Tabatha Mills and Adam Thwaites Email: [email protected]
Old Kent Road: A New Precedent for Mixing Leisure, Manufacturing and Housing by Daniel Sefton
"By combining industrial, residential, and leisure spaces using innovative changes of level, land-use pressures in the inner city could be significantly alleviated.
"An undulating raised park set against the side of an existing recycling centre creates a pocket of urban rurality. Pavilions break through the park's surface for exhibition and retail space, with micro-manufacturing occurring on the submerged ground floor.
"HGV access to ground floors occurs through a road network beneath the park. The park removes both social and physical barriers that industrial land creates through controlled, increased public proximity to manufacturing and community-connecting active transport routes."
Student: Daniel Sefton Course: Designing Cities BA (Hons) Tutors: David Mathewson and Elisa Engel Email: [email protected]
The Mycology Institute by Gemma Mohajer
"The Mycology Institute re-purposes existing buildings at Wormwood Scrubs Prison. Former cells provide ideal conditions for growing mushrooms, used to make sustainable products. The project extends one of the cell blocks creating a mycelium product factory.
"It forms a route to the scrubs and a public square created by demolishing the prison wall. The building is constructed using sustainable products, including rope elements, developed from chance operations. These are used as part of the roof structure and as a screen that shades the building and takes rainwater off the roof. Columns and floors reuse the 916,000 prison wall bricks."
Student: Gemma Mohajer Course: Master of Architecture (MArch) (RIBA pt II) Tutors: Kester Rattenbury and Sean Griffiths Email: [email protected]
The Rotherhithe Cooperative Press by Rebecca Gardner
"Newspapers are dying, and with them, an integral part of London's civic life and tacit skillset is at risk of extinction. The Rotherhithe Cooperative Press reinvents newspaper production, turning away from mass media favouring temporal print that focuses on specific events and protests.
"Through exploiting the natural diurnal cycle of the printing industry and the Thames, the scheme acts as a production framework and distribution network for marginalised media outlets at night whilst a community print-work mobilises the community to engage in protest during the day."
Student: Rebecca Gardner Course: Master of Architecture (MArch) (RIBA pt II) Tutors: Anthony Boulanger, Stuart Piercy and Callum Perry Email: [email protected]
Peat Observation: Carbon Cycles through Plant Matter by Seni Agunpopo
"The project looks at preserving and accelerating the restoration of damaged peatlands in Scotland – one of the world's most effective carbon store/sinks.
"This project uses a wider parametric masterplan strategy of landscape probes and responsive blanket systems to alter and control the conditions of soil moisture, temperature and humidity, as well as the deployable modular research units that support the ongoing scheme."
Student: Seni Agunpopo Course: Master of Architecture (MArch) (RIBA pt II) Tutors: John Cook, Laura Nica and Ben Pollock Email: [email protected]

"You're Her Type": Anna and Eve and the Garden of Evil (+ how Eve and Villanelle learn and love)
hello everybody i have had more wine so now you're going to be subjected to my Opinions. today, we are going to be talking about eve and anna, specifically in the context of their respective relationships with villanelle. i believe that, as we wind up to another season finale, and our characters make some pretty defining choices about one another, this is a comparison that killing eve invites -- it's no coincidence that after six episodes of relative radio silence on the matter, konstantin returned anna to the show's discourse in 2x07. so buckle up. a little signposting: first we're going to break down how eve and villanelle engage with the idea of love, then contrast anna and eve's moral frameworks, and then finally explore how anna and eve have gone from almost mirror images of one another to completely divorced in villanelle's mind, and why that's a good thing. i will try and keep this shit concise, but y'all know how these turn out.
Tumblr media
now as i've mentioned before, killing eve is a precarious cantilever of parallels. eve/villanelle are obviously our most important and riveting example of this -- initially, they have their resemblance, but we watch as they slowly and softly kill their old selves until they complement each other seamlessly. but eve/anna is a crucial secondary parallel because it contextualises the primary; it situates villanelle and eve's mutual obsession.
Tumblr media
i believe that as we progress through our formative years, the people around us provide us with experiences and patterns that teach us how to love, and what to expect from love. this can sometimes set us up for life (leaving us with a model that drives us to seek out healthy and productive dynamics), but sometimes, it means we don't know how to recognise or cultivate genuine affection, and we get trapped in damaging cycles. i've said before that i think eve sits on the psychopathy spectrum, but i also think that growing up, she had strong examples of relationships, which is why she is such an accomplished long-term chameleon -- she was able to maintain a marriage and friendships. yes, this was partially through self-repression, but at a base level, eve has the formulae to pass in these typical emotional environments.
Tumblr media
villanelle, on the other hand? anna tells eve that villanelle's father was a drunk, and her mother passed away. i doubt that villanelle had ANY actual relationships, let alone good ones, with family. she's exceptionally intelligent and a very fast learner (which anna asserts and we have confirmed on-screen almost every episode), and she's versatile. this is why she's able to craft and adopt the perfect character/personality for a particular situation -- she's built up a repertoire of dialects, micro-expressions, cue responses, etc. that allow her to smoothly navigate short-term interactions (e.g. with Sebastian, with Gemma). but prior to anna, villanelle has no people she can invest in and expect a returned investment, so she's never had the opportunity to develop skills beyond the superficial. she gets what she wants through charisma, a calculated blend of innocence and sex appeal, and transactions (i do this, you do that).
Tumblr media
but then villanelle meets anna, and undoubtedly forms an imprint on her of some kind, as her first "reciprocal" relationship -- the first adult to treat villanelle like she has value. obviously, the ethics of student/teacher affair are EXTREMELY dicey, but getting into that discourse will take us outside my intended scope. so here's how eve and anna differ. 1) proximity. villanelle and anna are together all the time, and this gives rise to their relationship. villanelle and eve, in the first season, are almost always apart. initially, their fascination is at least partly driven by mystery. it's not a "crime of opportunity". this is pretty much the most difficult long-distance mess imaginable. essentially, villanelle and eve both take an active role -- they pursue each other deliberately -- rather than a passive one. it's not a matter of convenience. 2) commitment. for anna, villanelle was an avenue of tourism, a compartment kept self-contained which anna could visit to re-explore youth and sexuality. but villanelle was not allowed to bleed into the rest of her life; anna wanted to keep job-husband-image just-so while also having villanelle when desired (cake had and eaten too). eve's whole life, however, orbits villanelle. her husband, her friends, her job -- these are discarded as acceptable sacrifices on the path to villanelle, rather than prioritised. while anna (potentially due to guilt) idealises the memory of her husband, eve considers niko disposable, and is a clearer iteration of herself without him.
Tumblr media
3) psychology. anna is inarguably fucked up (she had an affair with her STUDENT), but i don't think she registers as a psychopath. she displays empathy, remorse, reticence to cause harm. eve? villanelle kind of nailed it with the "like us" thing. and this brings us to how anna and eve each fit into villanelle's life, and way of life. im making an absolute reach of a biblical reference with my title, but if for a minute we did position anna/eve as adam/eve, we end up with two items of real relevance. firstly, that eve is the one who takes the bite of the apple, and secondly, that eve is created from anna/adam. the apple as we know is symbolic of the temptation of sin. eve eats, and is cast from paradise forever. what i love about this, though, is that our eve isn't cast from paradise, she's cast from prison. eve's boring office job in witness coordination, her stale marriage, her enactment of normality day in, day out -- it isn't a utopia, not by any stretch. and i think that's only really starkly apparent to eve after all those trappings are gone; once she feels "wide awake", she realises exactly how long and how deeply she's been asleep. but anna? anna doesn't give in, or rather, she doesn't give in enough. she sleeps with villanelle, and spends time with villanelle, but when she's confronted with villanelle's capacity for violence, she retreats. she calls the police and cuts villanelle out of her life (which im obviously not going to criticise her for; it's a justifiable response), although it's too late by then. she's stranded in this halfway purgatory -- a woman whose adolescent lover murdered her husband; a woman who isn't good but won't commit to being bad, CAN'T commit. anna is undoubtedly morally grey, but (and bear with me here, because i can't think of a better way to articulate this) anna is kind of weak. she never had the guts to look at her situation for what it was, to bother to try and see villanelle beyond what she wanted her to be. she was using villanelle -- someone she could feel good about helping while simultaneously bringing excitement to her mundane life -- and set her back down when villanelle became too much trouble. what we and Villanelle learn from this is that certain parts of who she is are attractive (irresistibly so) to other people, and others are repellent.
Tumblr media
which obliquely brings me to the second point, that eve is created from anna. as early as 1x02, we have our attention directed to the physical similarities between anna and eve, which is perhaps part of the initial draw to eve for villanelle, but we also have their differences immediately emphasised. eve is unique from the outset, because these repellent qualities -- the enjoyment of destruction, the dramatic flair, the violence, the efficiency -- are what excite her about villanelle in the first place. villanelle's beauty/charm/off-beat humour/loyalty all come into the picture later. at the beginning, there's just a string of bodies, and that's what sucks eve in. don't get me wrong, i think it's very much villanelle's personality that eve is obsessed with -- we could see her professional but  lack of personal interest in the Ghost -- but she has always understood villanelle in the context of her darkness. it never surprises her, only intrigues her. in 1x08, we have a number of direct comparisons between anna and eve, or at least, the show recreates the same situations with each of them and watches them respond entirely differently.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
we have anna pulling the gun on villanelle. the entire time, villanelle is relaxed, stating outright that anna doesn't have what it takes to shoot. she waits her out. she has no intentions of killing anna, even though she tells irina, "i don't love her anymore." we'll come back to the significance of that statement.
later, in the tea room, eve has a gun levelled at villanelle, but again, villanelle is certain she won't fire. eve admits that no, she can't use the gun, but rather than turn it on herself as anna did, she makes villanelle an offer: come with me; it can be just the two of us, and we can talk. in a high stress environment, eve's response is to treat villanelle like a person, not a weapon or a thing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
so villanelle runs. and that brings us to their final interaction of the season, when they meet in villanelle's paris apartment. as they lie together on the bed, eve pulls the knife, and villanelle tells her, "you can't."
Tumblr media
this is where eve cleaves distinctly and irreversibly from anna in villanelle's mind. like i said, a fraction of eve's initial appeal is her similarity to anna, although it's also obvious that villanelle is very much attracted to eve in her own right (in 2x03, she calls the woman she sleeps with "eve" and not "anna"). but then in 1x04, eve gets out of the car to face villanelle, and villanelle has dinner with her in 1x05, and eve begins to overwrite anna in villanelle's mind. how can we be sure of this? because in 1x08, when villanelle is sneaking past anna and irina in the apartment, she pauses and stares, even though it's vital that she get to her passport quickly. what's notable about this particular moment is that this is the only shot where anna could easily be mistaken for eve. this is what prompts villanelle to linger for that extra beat.
Tumblr media
so we have that initial similarity, then a merging, then an overtaking. but when eve stabs villanelle, she becomes removed entirely from anna in villanelle's mind. she goes from "you're like anna" to "you're more interesting than anna" to just "eve". because along many other things, eve has the capacity to surprise villanelle. she doesn't take the easy or the expected choice. not only does she understand villanelle's language of extremities and violence, she speaks it. this is what villanelle means by "like us" in 2x07; she and eve are more similar than they are different.
and now we're circling back to villanelle's defence to irina -- "i don't love her anymore!" obviously, this line carries all kinds of implications, but the most critical is that villanelle conceptualises herself as someone capable of love. she doesn't say "i don't like her anymore" or "i don't want her anymore" or "i'm not obsessed with her anymore". she chooses and uses "love".
Tumblr media
with anna, though, it never could be a mutual, reciprocal love, because she and villanelle don't mean the same thing when they use that word. they have fundamentally different understandings of what love means. so even though, ostensibly, it seems like villanelle broke her learned pattern by seeking anna out, she actually perpetuated it -- anna is another authority-position adult who discards villanelle, who misunderstands her and pushes her away (again, fair enough; villanelle is very complicated and dangerous). but eve? look at eve's initial constructions of love. she loved bill, but remains infatuated with his murderer. she loved niko, but when he questioned her rather than supported her, she discarded him too, and went from upset to acceptance in a matter of DAYS after what was presumably a 15yrs+ partnership.
Tumblr media
and then look at her with villanelle. it's not conventional or healthy, but they have a much more compatible interpretation of interpersonal relationships. they're both quite manipulative, but they don't see this as an issue -- the manipulations are a means to the end of helping the other. villanelle is very transactional (she sends eve clothes and perfume, wants to make her favourite recipes), but eve responds very well to the expressing affection through gifts and gestures; far less well when niko and kenny try to show care by giving eve instructions or suggestions. they each romanticise eve stabbing villanelle ("i think about it all the time"), yet neither of them believed villanelle would go through with the hit on eve, because violence plays a deliberate, rather than random, role in their dynamic, which they both comprehend innately. eve stabbed villanelle to assert their equality; she probably did it because villanelle's first response was to say, "you can't", and eve needed to prove she could. but they're on different terms by the time they meet again, and harming each other is no longer a productive currency, no longer has purpose; instead, they hurt others, and help each other, as a way of affirming the growth of their connection.

for eve and villanelle alike, the other represents a deviation from their established learned patterns, but an important choice for them personally. eve isn't going for the stable, normal relationship that she's been brought up to seek out; instead, she's gravitating towards the possibility of someone who embraces her complexity and darkness, and will give her space and means to explore and express herself. and villanelle isn't recreating a nonreciprocal relationship where she is used/enjoyed and then discarded; she's chosen someone who has the potential to be longer-term, who genuinely cares about her holistically.
from where we're standing before the finale, it looks like they may learn to "love" each other, in the way they are each capable of. villanelle and eve aren’t a relationship that can exist in heaven, because they’re not people of paradise; whether they’re the apples or the snakes or the gods in this equation, the pertinent fact is that are each other’s gateways into a world that fits them, and gives them what they need. is that fucked up? absolutely. is it kind of nice? I think so. it’s certainly gripping as all hell to watch.
xx. see y’all on the other side if we survive tomorrow’s episode.
