On April 8th 1820 violence erupted when Radical prisoners were taken from Paisley to Greenock jail.
This is a direct follow on from the Battle of Bonnymuir post from three days ago, and the Radical War.
It always worries me posting stories like this, even though it was over 200 years since it happened we Scots have awfy long memories, especially when we sense some injustice.
Some Radical prisoners from Bonnymuir were taken from Paisley to Greenock jail under escort. The citizens of Greenock fought their escort, the Port Glasgow Militia, until they reached the jail, the militia fired indiscriminately into the Greenock crowd, resulting in eight deaths and ten wounded. In spite of the enormity of the Militia’s deed no disciplinary action was taken.
At night the citizens of Greenock rescued the Paisley Radicals, only one of whom was subsequently re-arrested..
The Greenock dead and wounded ranged from eight year old James MacGilp to sixty-five year old John MacWhinnie.
Adam Clephane (48 years) dead
James Kerr (17 years) dead
William Lindsay (15 years) dead
James MacGilp (8 years) dead
Archibald Drummond (20 years) dead
John Mac Whinnie (65 years) dead
John Boyce (33 years) dead
Archibald McKinnon (17 years) dead
(Died of his wounds on 5th May 1820)
Mrs Catherine Turner (65 years) leg amputated
Hugh Paterson (14 Years) leg amputated
Peter Cameron (14 years) flesh wound
John Gunn (24 years) flesh wound
John Turner (22 years) flesh wound

MWW Artwork of the Day (6/29/23) Dante Gabriel Rossetti (British, 1828-1882) Veronica Veronese (1872) Oil on canvas, 107.9 x 86.3 cm. Delaware Art Museum, Wilmington DE
"Veronica Veronese" is an oil painting by Dante Gabriel Rossetti painted in 1872 with Alexa Wilding as the model. The painting was conceived as a companion to Lady Lilith. The symbolism in the painting includes the uncaged bird, which may represent "the marriage of the voices of nature and the soul" and overt flower symbolism. The camomile in the bird cage may represent “energy in adversity,” the primroses youth, and the daffodils reflection. Jane Morris lent the green dress in the picture. The violin was part of Rossetti's collection of musical instruments, and the fan also appeared in "Monna Vanna." The few bars of musical composition on the manuscript may have been borrowed from George Boyce.
Rossetti is one of the featured artists in this MWW gallery/album: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1567228726715824&type=3

Penn Yan Express trucking operated in Penn Yan from 1941 to 1983. They serviced most of New York State & NYC, most of New Jersey, and eventually to include Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, part of Virginia, and Ontario. Robert Hinson started driving and repairing trucks and farm machinery at a young age while working for his father, Jesse Hinson, at his John Deere dealer- ship in Lakemont. After his father’s death in July of 1941, at the age of eighteen, he started driving for Boyce Motor Lines of Canandaigua, in the later part of 1941. In an interview Hinson once stated, “The minute I got my driver’s license, I took off for Baltimore driving a tractor-trailer rig. Not only had I never driven a truck. I didn’t even know where Baltimore was. Someone handed me a map and said get going.” Hinson drove for Boyce until January 5, 1943 at which time he entered the US Army Quartermaster Corp. He received his basic training at Camp Young in California, which was established in 1942 by General George S. Patton for desert training to prepare troops to fight the Nazis in North Africa. In August he was transferred to the 1318th Service Unit at Camp Pickett, Virginia, and on November 2, 1943 was honorably discharged at the rank of Private 1st Class after receiving injuries in a jeep accident. After returning home to Lakemont, Robert Hinson resumed his truck driving activities for Boyce Motor Lines again on November 22, 1943. In 1944 he started Hinson Trucking Company in the garage that his father had his farm dealership, with a Ford straight truck that he had built from spare parts and pieces. By October 1945, he sold this truck and purchased his first new tractor, a White for $4300. #trucker #rollingcoal #dieselnation #iceroadtruckers #trucks #truckdriver #truckers #truckingindustry #truckdrivers#dieselpower #cdldriver #dieselporn #truckstop #truckerslife #trucking #diesellife #trucklife #bigrig #truckersview #roadhog #cdlhunter #cdllife #cdljob #cdljobs 🚛 Follow @cdlhunter 📲 Call or text us at (347) 878-2591 for a driving job (at Penn Yan, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CeOGns3OKyo/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
