The Lover renaissance/resurgence happening with it charting and getting a single feels coded specifically to you
FOUR YEARS! four years i have waited! pleaded! joked! here's how cruel summer can still be a single! (and the worst part of it is it happening in this accursed monkey's paw of a timeline we're in where rather than fill me with delirious excitement, i just feel kind of numb and sad. trying to, you know, to borrow a phrase, shake it off...) but yes, as a lover stan from here to eternity, a lover defender, a lover warrior even, it's incredibly satisfying seeing it triumph and seeing how solid and beloved it remains. my top 3 girls (red, folklore, lover) never lose!

Hang your head low In the glow of the vending machine I'm not dying ↳ Eras Tour Series Part 4/?

hi today i present you my incoherent thoughts on maroon!! shall we just start with how much there is a parallel between the red era (jake but will be referred to as "red era" simply because) and joe with obviously a different ending??
laughing with my feet in your lap like you were my closest friend// it's nice to have a friend//we were supposed to be just friends// up on the roof with a school girl crush// i don't want you like a best friend. "your roommate's cheap-ass screw-top rosé, that's how"// but you can make me a drink// and what's in my system// whisky on ice, sunset and vine// and the liquor in our cocktails. the one I was dancing with in new york, no shoes // barefoot in the kitchen sacred new beginnings that became my religion, listen// dancing with our hands tied // i'm new york city i still do it for you, babe// my love was as cruel as the cities i lived in. the burgundy on my t-shirt, when you splashed your wine into me // i'm spilling wine in the bathtub, you kiss my face and we're both drunk// drinking on a beach with you all over me. so scarlet, it was (maroon) the mark they saw on my collarbone// getting caught up in a moment lipstick on your face//scratches down your back now// and we rule the kingdom inside my room// the taste of your lips is my idea of luxury. sobbing with your head in your hands ain't that the way shit always ends? // hang your head low in the glow of the vending machine i'm not dying// and I cried like a baby coming home from the bar // went off like sirens, just crying// please don't ever become a stranger whose laugh I could recognize anywhere. and i wake with your memory over me that's a real fucking legacy to leave // i feel a lavender haze creeping up on me // don't read the last page but I stay // king of my heart, body and soul// my baby's fly like a jet stream high above the whole scene loves me like I'm brand new
i am sure i have missed something which sucks. joe and the red era had soo many similar elements especially the drinking but the point is that same situationships would end up in different results with different people and a different you. and i think that's fucking beautiful. @wineonmytshirt thought of you while doing this

Cruel summer (and when was it)
Cruel Summer tells of an affair that ends with loving someone other than a significant other. When Cruel Summer went to #1 on 19 October 2033 Taylor released this top photo which is reminiscent of the Cannes Sunset referred to in Lover also.
Tumblr media
Lyrics
[Verse 1] Fever dream high in the quiet of the night You know that I caught it (Oh yeah, you're right, I want it) Bad, bad boy, shiny toy with a price You know that I bought it (Oh yeah, you're right, I want it)
Middle of the night reminds us of Wish you would.
A bad boy is referred to in Blank Space and bad ones in End Game.
Shiny toy separates the muse of this song and paper rings where she sings “I like shiny things but I’ll marry you with paper rings”.
With a price refers the Haylor theme of paying a price
[Pre-Chorus] Killing me slow, out the window I'm always waiting for you to be waiting below Devils roll the dice, angels roll their eyes What doesn't kill me makes me want you more
Here the muse is the same as in Wish you would, Harry drove past her house at night, and style he picked her up during the night.
Taylor used Devil/angel about Harry before, in the intro to the thematically similar Trouble: “how can the devil be pulling you toward someone who looks so much like an angel when he smiles at you?” Here she takes chances having an affair. This line appeared in a game of the Lover video.
[Chorus] And it's new, the shape of your body It's blue, the feeling I've got And it's ooh, woah-oh It's a cruel summer It's cool, that's what I tell 'em No rules in breakable heaven But ooh, woah-oh It's a cruel summer with you
The shape of his body means different to her boyfriend. Harry also changed to low impact training post 1d and his body did change, but I hear it as a different person
Blue was the colour of the 1989 album, depression and Harry is called “sad boy” in Question…?
No rules, breakable heaven - their love is fragile and they make their own rule.
[Verse 2] Hang your head low in the glow of the vending machine I'm not dying (Oh yeah, you're right, I want it) We say that we'll just screw it up in these trying times We're not trying (Oh yeah, you're right, I want it)
vending machine glow places it in hotel
Another reference to buying (as in Fine Line) and that they are not trying to avoid being together, again similar to Fine Line
Screwing it up in trying times is reminiscent of Sign of the Times
[Pre-Chorus] So cut the headlights, summer's a knife I'm always waiting for you just to cut to the bone Devils roll the dice, angels roll their eyes And if I bleed, you'll be the last to know, oh
Style has cutting headlights to go undetected when picking her up
Summers a knife/cut to the bone tells us this person is someone with a history that she has feelings for. Willow has a similar line: “I’m like the water rough on the surface but you cut through like a knife”
If I bleed is saying she won’t share her feelings with the muse
It's a cruel summer with you [Bridge] I'm drunk in the back of the car And I cried like a baby comin' home from the bar (Oh) Said, "I'm fine," but it wasn't true I don't wanna keep secrets just to keep you And I snuck in through the garden gate Every night that summer just to seal my fate (Oh) And I scream, "For whatever it's worth I love you, ain't that the worst thing you ever heard?" He looks up, grinnin' like a devil
Taylor has pay the price, crying in the way home. “Get drunk but you’re still not my baby” from Death by a thousand cuts,
Keeping secrets and Sneaking in through the garden gate confirm this is an affair, the garden is in many Haylor songs.
The Garden Gate to me is a metaphor for sneaking around, not the front door but through the garden to not be seen. However I’ve also heard it could be a physical gate or may actually be a pub in Hampstead Health, it’s close to Harry’s house and where Joe and Taylor rented. Taylor was seen in Hampstead Heath several times. The beer garden and red brick wall look to me like the promo photos for Lover. If it is a literal location I still think its use in the song is to indicate being hidden and shifty.
“he looks so pretty” … similar to Style and "pretty face" in Slut!
“I love you ain’t that the worst thing you’ve heard” sounds like something said to/by a person who is not your significant other.

Why 2018 seems like the time period to me
29 January - Fine line written with similar meaning.
12 April - both in london, Harry chipper, on stage
11 March first medicine, ever, the crowd don’t say tasted 🥺
19 March - Harry cried in MMIH, he sang twice the Gotta get betters and no 'Cause nothing else will do' and left.
22 June - Harry teared up during Sweet Creature, and sang Still the One by Shauna Twain, setlist changes rare on that tour.
1 July - when Taylor in US he smiled on the same line and replaced 'running with the wolves' with 'running with you'.
July - Me! Video features Harry’s LOR US suits June - July.
The next week, Harry’s shows were energetic, Medicine Saint Paul is here, grinning during Woman, speaking clearer in Dining table, Me! references his ‘enthusiasm’ during Medicine in California
4 July Taylor and Joe at Turks and Caicos, lots of photos
21 July Harry Camille break up announced
Falling, to be so lonely and Afterglow recorded by September 2018.
October 2018 Harry went to Tokyo and was still there when the Rep last show was there 21 November. Taylor played Haylor songs. HS wrote Little Freak. Then Taylor went to UK with Joe, HS stayed

wait i was today years old when i learned y'all don't understand thr lyric "hang your head low in the glow of the vending machine, I'm not dying" its so picturesque in its literal sense which makes its figurative narrative purpose so clear
he literally hangs his head and looks down in front of a lit up vending machine and she realizes she's not dying
"this summer is the apocalypse" but she realized she wasn't dying when she saw him look down in the light of a vending machine.
like its one of the clearest lines in cruel summer???

Hang your head low in the glow of the vending machine. I'm not dying...
I haven't been to my Eras tour date yet (Melbourne n3 girlies make some noise lmao), but through both my recovery from long covid in which I could barely leave my bed at the start of the year and would watch the shows to get me through the days (top right) to climbing Diamond Head with ease in October (bottom left) and receiving the wrong shirt to wear to my show next year (the black top in the top left and bottom right was meant to be a debut styled shirt... but the universe has said 'no, you are a Reputation girlie at heart and shall stay one'), I can definitely say that I feel like I had the whole experience and cannot wait to see it in person!

i just realized the meaning of "hang your head low in the glow of the vending machine, I'm not dying" and i have no idea if you know this or not but... it's a hospital. it's a dang hospital
I’m… I don’t know if I’ve ever clocked this 😳
Hang your head low in the glow of the vending machine I’m not dying -> now you’re running down the hallway you know what they all say you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone -> stop you’re losing me I can’t find a pulse my heart won’t start anymore 😵‍💫
(I think I thought it was like… a random vending machine? Idk at a bar or store or something I never thought about it???)

cruel summer and I know places 💜
ALAS I will have to go with the popular option and pick Cruel Summer even though I love I Know Places dearly!!! It used to be my 1989 song to warm up my voice with when the album was fresh and new and it has a lot of good memories attached to it!
But truly there is nothing quite like actually screaming the bridge of Cruel Summer in your car in the midst of face-numbing summer humidity/heat plus Taylor being like "I'll write a song that's about feeling like you're dying when you're actually falling in love'' and I was like that is concept of ALL TIME bestie (and it still IS.) Hang your head low in the glow of the vending machine-- I'm NOT dying is quite honestly going to live in my brain forevermore (because when have each of us not felt personally attacked by someone's sudden goodness and beauty crashing over you all at once so it feels like a kind of anguish?)
send me two taylor swift songs and i’ll tell you which one i prefer!

Cruel Summer Analysis
I was reading the official lyrics for the bridge of "Cruel Summer" and I noticed for the first time that "I love you" in quotes alone. I always assumed the quotes were around "I love you, ain't that the worst thing you've ever heard?". This completely changed my perception of the song.
So, I'm going to go through the whole song to discuss how that one difference changes the story being told for me.
The main thing that changes is the number of characters in the story. Before I assumed the only characters were Taylor and the Lover. But we can also include a third character who'll I'll name Friend for now. Friend is on the receiving end of the story, Taylor explain the true story of what happened between her and Lover. (Please note I'm using Taylor as a name for character in a story, not Taylor Swift. Certain assumptions will be made about the character based off Taylor Swift because we know Taylor Swift writes based off her real life)
Verse 1:
Fever dream high in the quiet of the night You know that I caught it Bad, bad boy Shiny toy with a price You know that I bought it
[So verse 1 set the scene where Taylor had no plans to fall in love with Lover but accidentally fell in love. Friend obviously knows this but the next part is where the truth of the relationship starts to come out]
Killing me slow, out the window I'm always waiting for you to be waiting below Devils roll the dice, angels roll their eyes What doesn't kill me makes me want you more
[Taylor starts to expose the fact that it wasn't a happy relationship. 'Out the window/I'm always waiting for to be waiting below' has a double meaning of Taylor literally looking out her window looking for Lover and Taylor having fallen in love and expected Lover to already have fallen for her. Lover however never loved Taylor the way Taylor loved them]
Chorus:
And it's new, the shape of your body It's blue, the feeling I've got And it's ooh, whoa, oh It's a cruel summer It's cool, that's what I tell 'em No rules in breakable heaven But ooh, whoa oh It's a cruel summer With you
[THE PLACEMENT OF COMMAS. So a friend of mine said that Shakespeare is written to be read comma to comma and I firmly believe that applied here. Blue is a being a descriptor of both Lover's body and the feeling Taylor has about the situation. Every moment with Lover was amazing but hurt so much. The term cruel summer is so amazing to cover the situation because summer is beautiful time of year where the sun is out and you get to be outside and free because the cold winter is gone. The explain that time of year to also be cruel beautiful explain how Taylor felt about Lover.
The line 'It's cool, that's what I tell them/ No rules in breakable heaven' is Taylor exposing her lies to Friend. She tried to play off the relationship as a summer fling where she was having just having fun with Lover, nothing more. But she know that Lover could cut it off at any moment and she would be devastated]
Verse 2:
Hang your head low In the glow of the vending machine I'm not dying You say that we'll just screw it up in these trying times We're not trying
So cut the headlights, summer's a knife I'm always waiting for you just to cut to the bone Devils roll the dice, angels roll their eyes And if I bleed, you'll be the last to know
[Friend is the person Taylor is waiting to cut her to the bone. Taylor is always thinking about outside perception and how the media will portray her. If everyone (including Friend) knew about the truth while the relationship was happening, Taylor would have been bombarded with others opinions about what to do with her own relationship.
Last to know isn't Lover but Friend and everyone around her. Taylor doesn't want people to she's in the heartbreaking unrequited-love relationship. Being a position of fame, it's important that people think she's living this perfectly beautiful life. ]
Bridge:
I'm drunk in the back of the car And I cried like a baby coming home from the bar (oh) Said, "I'm fine, " but it wasn't true I don't wanna keep secrets just to keep you And I snuck in through the garden gate Every night that summer just to seal my fate (oh) And I screamed for whatever it's worth "I love you, " ain't that the worst thing you ever heard?
[Ok people, this is where I lose my mind everytime I listen to this song now. This is where Taylor start unloading to Friend. She starts filling in blanks and explaining why she was the way she was on the night they went out and she cried. She goes in between talking to Friend and talking to Lover alittle. 'I dont wanna keep secrets to keep you/ And I snuck..." is partially to Lover and partially to Friend. The way this line sung is more like "... keep secrets just to keep you and I, snuck in..." The importance of that 'comma' is it shows how little control Taylor had. The phrase 'just to keep you,' gives Taylor more power that what she had in that relationship. She was willing to do so much, not to keep Lover but to keep them together even if they were bound to fall apart because Lover never loved Taylor. But Taylor catches herself and quickly goes into a story about the garden gate.
Now to the part that started this all. let me show you the scene. Taylor is pouring her heart to Friend, explaining the heartbreak she just went through. Explaining that even though she told Lover she loved them, it did nothing to save the relationship. And isn't that situation the worst thing you've ever heard? I find this so much more heartbreaking than Taylor screaming at Lover "I love you ain't that the worst thing you've heard?" Taylor has to live with that fact that she did everything she could to save that relationship but Lover simply didn't love her so the relationship ended.]
He looks up grinning like a devil
[This line is so important because it explains why Taylor wasn't able to leave. The devil is a tempter, leading people to a life of sin. Lover was too tempting, too enticing for Taylor to leave. Every time she thought she could be done, Lover would smile or do something that bring her back into their world.]

cruel summer
Tumblr media
↳ in which, a drunken night at the bar leads you dedicating a taylor swift song to matt
pronouns: they/them
warnings: kinda implied smut, reader singing while intoxicated, pda !!
notes: cruel summer was written for matt murdock
only three people have ever heard you sing, your parents when you were younger and karen when she had visited your apartment and heard you singing as you cleaned around the house.
so when you were on your fifth drink of the night and saw the empty karaoke stage, karen’s eyes widened as you suggested a song. foggy let out a laugh at your statement and matts eyes widened behind his glasses.
karen smiled widely and nodded, foggy’s voice being heard behind you as you stumbled up to josie asking to sing. “they do sing foggy! just… not in front of people.” foggy looked at you curiously. “have you heard them before?” karen nodded and matt listened as you grabbed the mic.
he laughed as he heard the start of the song, its one he had heard coming from your headphones many times before you abruptly stopped the music as he entered. karen quickly pulled her phone out to document the performance knowing you wouldn’t remember a thing in the morning.
“fever dream high in the quiet of the night, you know that i caught it. bad, bad boy, shiny toy with a price. you know that i bought it”
foggy’s mouth dropped as well as matt’s. karens smile only widening as she filmed with a shaky hand trying to hold back her laughs at the boys faces.
“killing me slow, out the window. i’m always waiting for you to be waiting below. devils roll the dice, angels roll their eyes. what doesn't kill me makes me want you more”
matts mouth curled into a smile as he listened to the lyrics, understanding why you always stopped the music as he came in. he listened as you sung with a confident voice. he had always called you his angel, his face flushing as he could connect every lyric to a moment you had spent together.
“and it's new, the shape of your body. it’s blue, the feeling i’ve got. and it's ooh, whoa, oh. it's a cruel summer, it's cool, that's what i tell 'em. no rules in breakable heaven, but ooh, whoa oh it’s a cruel summer. with you.”
foggy’s jaw was still dropped as you sang. karen’s hand came up to his chin to close his mouth, still holding back a laugh. she whispered in his ear. “gotta get this all on camera otherwise theyre not gonna remember anything.”
“hang your head low. in the glow of the vending machine, i'm not dying. uou say that we'll just screw it up in these trying times, we're not trying.”
matt listened as you sang with a grin on his face. your eyes met his figure, smiling just as he did. your body suddenly full of confidence. you weren’t sure if it came from the grin plastered on your boyfriends face or the liquor coursing through your body.
“so cut the headlights, summer's a knife. i'm always waiting for you just to cut to the bone. devils roll the dice, angels roll their eyes, and if i bleed, you'll be the last to know”
you were stubborn when it came to telling matt about your injuries, due to him always taking care of them as it you broke your hand while all it was had been a small paper-cut. the smile never leaving his face as you sang like it was the last thing you would do that night.
“oh, it's new, the shape of your body. it's blue, the feeling i've got and it's ooh, whoa, oh. it’s a cruel summer. it’s cool, that's what i tell 'em. no rules in breakable heaven. but ooh, whoa, oh. it’s a cruel summer. with you.”
memories of the night before filling your head. his hands roaming down your sides memorizing every curve and scar on your body. you had both spent that night, legs tangled together, as you both pointed out scars and told stories together.
it felt like you spent the entire night memorizing each-others bodies, taking mental images. it felt so intimate. little kisses and giggles exchanged as stories were told. even if some of your stories weren’t as interesting as matt’s he listened as if they were the most interesting thing in the world.
“i’m drunk in the back of the car. and i cried like a baby coming home from the bar (oh). said, "i’m fine, " but it wasn't true. i don't wanna keep secrets just to keep you. and i snuck in through the garden gate. every night that summer just to seal my fate (oh). and i screamed for whatever it's worth. " i love you, " ain't that the worst thing you ever heard? he looks up grinning like a devil”
almost as if it was scripted matt had grinned. a small chuckle leaving his mouth at the last line. he remembered how scared he was to tell you he loved you. the fear of putting you in danger screaming at him in the back of his head.
the night he had told you about his fears you sat on the couch with him in his apartment. you intertwined your hands together, cupping his cheek in your other hand. you told him about how you were willing to risk everything if it meant he could be yours. you both ended the night tangled together, whispers of i love you filling his apartment.
“it’s new, the shape of your body, it's blue, the feeling i've got and it's ooh, whoa, oh. it's a cruel summer. it's cool, that's what i tell 'em. no rules, in breakable heaven. but ooh, whoa, oh. it's a cruel summer. with you”
matt could hear how your heartbeat increased, he could smell the fresh detergent on your clothes. his head was full of nothing but you, driving him crazy as you sang a song he was well aware reminded you of him.
“i’m drunk in the back of the car. and i cried like a baby coming home from the bar. said, "i'm fine,” but it wasn't true. i don't wanna keep secrets just to keep you. and i snuck in through the garden gate, every night that summer just to seal my fate (oh). and I screamed for whatever it's worth. "i love you," ain't that the worst thing you ever heard?”
claps were heard around the bar as you finished, you immediately got off the stage and made your way over to your boyfriend. he stood up from his seat and smiled before pulling you into a kiss. gags being heard from foggy as matt flipped him off.
as you pulled away he smiled at you, pulling you into the seat next to him. karen watched with a smile on her face, putting her phone down. foggy spoke up, “so why havent you told us you could do that?”
you smiled, intertwining your hand with matts. “well you guys never asked, did you?”

you woke up with a groan, matts arms wrapped around you as he left small kisses on your shoulder. “good morning baby” you smiled hearing the sleepiness in his voice. “good morning pretty boy.” you hid your face in his chest, letting out another groan as your head pounded.
“medicines on your bedside table hun.” you smiled before turning over, grabbing the pill he had left and downed it with the water he had left on the table aswell. you checked your phone to see a text from karen.
you clicked the video as you furrowed your brows. eyes widening as the melody of cruel summer started playing. “dont tell me i actually-” matt started laughing. you quickly clicked out the video as you started singing, cringing at the phone.
“oh come on it was good! im just offended you never told me you could sing.” he wrapped his arms around your waist as he chuckled. “well you never asked did you?” you looked down at him. “thats what you said last night!”
