Decided to draw character designs for some Horus Heresy girlies. So here they all are!
Design notes below the cut:
Bequa Kynska: I decided to base her whole vibe slightly off Carla Rockmore. The patterns on the sleeve cuffs are inspired by this piece of 13th century Lebanese embroidery.
Tumblr media
Cyrene Valantion: Her outfit is inspired by traditional Georgian and Azerbaijanian women’s dress, also some (indirect) inspiration from the works of Michael Nesterov and orthodox saint icons in general.
Lotara Sarrin: Her design didn’t change much because she’s already perfect. But I did make her look a bit like Amrita Sher-Gil’s “Three Girls” painting.
Amar Astarte: Based off the irl statuette of (possibly) the goddess Astarte that was found in the necropolis of Hillah, near Babylon. I also gave her a lab coat because cmon, evil scientist gotta evil science. (Statue pictured below)
Tumblr media
Mersadie Oliton: Her clothes and jewellery are based off art from the 17th century Ottoman Empire, specifically from the Rålamb book of costumes.
Tarasha Euten: Clothing and hairstyle are inspired by statues from the Roman Empire, while the accessories are inspired by the Indus River Valley civilisation.
Euphrati Keeler: her clothing is inspired by a mix of fanart I’ve seen of her and this photo of a person from Elmali in traditional clothing (from the 1873 Vienna world fair)

This started off as a fun design thing and ended up with me doing hours of historical clothing research lmao 💀

The Ishtar Gate
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Ishtar Gate was the 8th gate to inner Babylonia, modern-day Iraq. It was constructed in devotion to Ishtar and made to look like lapis lazuli and features lions, Mušḫuššu, and bulls to symbolize Ishtar, Marduk, and Adad. During the New Year, the Babylonians would parade statues of the gods through the Gate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's also an dedication inscription by King Nebuchadnezzar II to explain the construction of the gateway. It reads something along the lines of;
"Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, the faithful prince appointed by the will of Marduk, the highest of princely princes, beloved of Nabu, of prudent counsel, who has learned to embrace wisdom, who fathomed their divine being and reveres their majesty, the untiring governor, who always takes to heart the care of the cult of Esagila and Ezida and is constantly concerned with the well-being of Babylon and Borsippa, the wise, the humble, the caretaker of Esagila and Ezida, the firstborn son of Nabopolassar, the King of Babylon
Both gate entrances of Imgur-Ellil and Nemetti-Ellil —following the filling of the street from Babylon—had become increasingly lower. Therefore, I pulled down these gates and laid their foundations at the water-table with asphalt and bricks and had them made of bricks with blue stone on which wonderful bulls and dragons were depicted. I covered their roofs by laying majestic cedars length-wise over them. I hung doors of cedar adorned with bronze at all the gate openings. I placed wild bulls and ferocious dragons in the gateways and thus adorned them with luxurious splendor so that people might gaze on them in wonder
I let the temple of Esiskursiskur, the highest festival house of Marduk, the lord of the gods, a place of joy and jubilation for the major and minor deities, be built firm like a mountain in the precinct of Babylon of asphalt and fired bricks."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's now located in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, Germany despite Iraq's efforts and petitions for its return home. Like many museums, the Pergamon claims that Iraq is not capable of taking proper care of the Gate (despite it being damaged by bombs in Germany during WWII). In 2004, a smaller replica was constructed in Hillah, Iraq

i attempted to dig through your posts but had no luck, did you make an official analysis post about the ethnic-coding of sonic characters?? i found the one about Blaze at least but i need the Babylon Rogues. yes it is just for a small detail in a fic i am writing but i also just love reading the infodump posts you make they are top tier quality
I haven't got a full post yet but now that you mention it putting it in a long-ass post would be a great idea. But for what u need rn, the Babylon Rogues are ABSOLUTELY Iraqi. How do we know this? They are literally called the Babylon Rogues.
In case u didn't know, Babylon was an ancient empire that was p powerful in the BC years. Its capitol town– named, you know, Babylon– was an independent city-state and for a while the largest city in the world. They also had one of the seven wonders of the world, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon The city of Babylon, whose remains are now a world heritage site, is now what is currently Hillah, Babil Governorate, Iraq.
Naming the Babylon Rogues' culture after Babylon and giving their home base the name the Babylon Garden with architectural design inspired by current Babylonian ruins very much codes the rogues are descendants of the Babylonian empire, ie: Iraqi.

03/23/03 03/23/23. I have been doing well with controlling my depression. Recently I started feeling it all over me again and wow has it slowed me down. I was wondering why. Then I started having pain in my shoulders and that was a clue is was getting triggered. I still didn’t know why. Then I realized that I had been a part of the war 20 years ago. I’m still shocked. I didn’t expect to live through the war and I sure didn’t expect it to last so many years. Now I’m experiencing waves of anger then deep sadness. IT’s grief. The grief is better than not feeling. Letting myself grieve is just another step in the recovery ❤️‍🩹 process. I look at my myself in the pictures and I see my anger now, it wasn’t nothing but a protective response to hide from feelings then. Picture 1# Easter at Saddam’s palace overlooking his rebuilt version of Babylon. 2# taking a break is assault of some town in Ah Najaf. Next is a comparison of 101st with no destiny and 20 years ago on the next Rendezvous. Now on to make my own destiny and another run for today to help ease my mind and rest my soul. #unbridledrunning #dailypractice #veteran #mentalhealthawareness #ptsd #depressionawareness (at Iraq - Al-Hillah, Babylon) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqJ_wBVuk8C/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Today we also celebrate the Holy Prophet Ezekiel. The Prophet Ezekiel (meaning "God is strong") was the son of Buzi and a priest by rank. He was taken captive and brought to Babylon during the reign of Jechonias. In the fifth year of this captivity, about 594 or 593 B.C., he began to prophesy. Having prophesied for about twenty-eight years, he was murdered, it is said, by the tribe of Gad, because he reproached them for their idolatry. His book of prophecy, divided into forty-eight chapters, is ranked third among the greater Prophets. It is richly filled with mystical imagery and marvelous prophetic visions and allegories, of which the dread Chariot of Cherubim described in the first Chapter is the most famous; in the "gate that was shut," through which the Lord alone entered, he darkly foretold of the Word's Incarnation from the Virgin (44:1-3); through the "dry bones" that came to life again (37:1-14), he prophesied both of the restoration of captive Israel, and the general resurrection of our race. May he intercede for us always + Source: https://www.goarch.org/chapel/saints?contentid=138 (at Iraq - Al-Hillah, Babylon) https://www.instagram.com/p/CgP6VAOP5St/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

There's fireworks over the Hudson tonight, that he's pretty damn sure he shouldn't even be watching. They make him skittish. They make him lose time.
But it's been like that since they brought him back from Afghanistan. Or maybe it was Iraq.
Loud noises, cars. That one time he went to the dentist. He knows better than to think he'll be allowed back.
At least not until he starts taking the anti-psychotics again. And he sure as fuck won't ever be doing that.
Not willingly. Not after how bad it had gotten the last time.
So yeah, maybe sitting out on the fire escape where the explosions are louder and make him hallucinate being holed up in foxhole in what his brain's convinced is World War II isn't the brightest idea he's ever had.
But if he had any bright ideas, well, hey, he probably wouldn't have joined up right out of high school. Or driven over that IED outside of Jalalabad or Hillah or wherever the fuck it even was. He thinks it was Jalalabad, but just like time, his memory is fuzzy at the edges.
And that's the worst of it, he thinks. Not the delusions. So what if his brain's decided it's seventy-whatever years ago and he's the star of his very own extremely fucked up sequel to Saving Private Ryan.
It's how the rest of it feels fake. Like he can't even trust the constant, phantom pain.
But it's not there, his arm. And he can still recall the blood, the way he screamed. He knows he lost it when that IED exploded, and--
--and then he's back, it's like it was the fucking Alps, or something. And not the sand that he could swear that he's still finding in his boots. And there's another voice, a name.
It's not his name, he knows, so why's he always try to answer?
The sparks fly blue and white and red. He knows he's heard that other name before.
Except he doesn't know a single goddamned thing. Not where he's lost the arm, not why he's so convinced he's got a sister. The brain damage is probably the worst of it. He never used to wake up screaming, convinced that there's some government conspiracy that's monitoring his thoughts. He never used to be obsessed with JFK.
And there's that name, the one that someone calls him in his head. It sounds like what you'd name the family dog.
