wait they managed not to broadcast any force india cars for a weekend?? when and why did this happen??
Oh this is a severely fucked up occurrence that I will try to stay brief about but. Basically in 2012 formula one raced in Bahrain as a pretty much implicit sportswashing measure (I'm wary of throwing the term around but f1 had cancelled the race in 2011 due to 'political unrest' aka mass protests from a civilian population that were being violently put down, and in 2012 were explicitly asked to return in what was seen by most as the Bahrain government trying to show they had returned to normal and there were definitely no more human rights abuses happening.) This was widely condemned by both international charities and local activists but Bernie insisted it was all good and they would race no matter what. To put into perspective how fucked the situation was, a protester was killed the weekend of the race.
(side note if you look into this deeper and actually investigate the politics going on behind a Motorsport pov a lot of drivers showed their asses here in their response and it's interesting especially in the case of Sebastian and Lewis how they reacted here VS how they would probably have reacted today.)
So that's. The background. Now here's the insane part. Obviously there were local protests against this, a lot of them. But only one incident really seemed to rattle f1 and that was a hire car of Force India mechanics had a petrol bomb thrown at it. Nobody was hurt but subsequently Force India decided not to participate in the later practice session so the staff could all return to their hotels before it got dark outside.
F1 was. Pissed. How dare you ruin our messaging. There is nothing wrong here, we're all having a great time here, there is no unrest whatsoever the government and their money are doing a great job. Also, this was back when news breaking on twitter was a fairly new concept so the process of these rumours coming out via twitter were very very messy and drew more attention to the sport.
So in what was probably an effort to avoid this online speculation and people demanding answers, during the first practice session, f1 decided the world was populated entirely by toddlers with no object permanence, and if they just didn't SHOW force india, nobody would remember to ask them about the force india petrol bomb rumours. So you had one session where every single team was getting screen time EXCEPT force india - like, I remember it being commented on as odd at the time - and a weekend where the camera kept cutting away from force india cars jarringly as much as it could.

hey so i hope you don't mind me saying this. you often say that desi tumblr is very casteist as of late. do you have any proof? as in screenshots of posts? it's not that i do nt believe you, i do i just need something to show my uc moots on tumblr to show them that casteism is indeed a problem on this site (sincerely, a well meaning uc ally)
[[Well, a lot of the casteism in desiblr is very covert and in the form of dogwhistles and I don't blame someone who is not trained to look for them to miss the signs. Honestly, I have blocked a lot of desi blogs over their casteist views and I don't have the mental spoons to go through my entire Tumblr blocklist searching for them (which is miles long thanks to the many many many pornbots also being there. Thanks for nothing Tumblr!)
But fuck, one blog that is branded in my head for the sheer vitriol and overt casteism is @/desi-stree
I am not a fan of call out posts but damn, some people need to be named and shamed really]]
Tumblr media
[[This is her reply as a part of a longer post. The person above, whom she is replying to is a Dalit speaking about her experiences as a Dalit in the Hindu community and this privileged UC calls her and other Dalits "brainwashed" for going through the traumatic first hand experience of caste based discrimination.
Translation of the Hindi text:
I wasn't going to cuss you* out, but you forced my hand into this, I haven't seen a bigger cunt than you]]
Tumblr media
[[You heard it guys, lower castes are the ones oppressing the savarnas now #NewIndia 😂😂😂
Please ignore all the vigilante justice and lynching and murder and rape and untouchability and bullying to the point of suicide committed against the Dalits]]
Tumblr media
[[Omg Savarna girl is so oppressed for having to study in a premium foreign university after paying a fortune. How tragic 😔
Apparently, the fact that casteism exists in society is the fault of the heavily marginalized group for availing themselves of a completely legal, government approved affirmative programme to uplift them
Honestly, I hope that only the lower caste people live in India and the other people leave it
Girl just took casteist segregation to a whole another level and thinks that she made a valid point what the fuck
They would all come in expensive cars with drivers, they were not SCST anymore but they still get the benefits
I should buy a car next year and hire a driver because apparently that erases the caste that I carry everywhere in my literal fucking surname]]
[[Oh, and do you know the cherry on the top of this cake? She is a T/ERF]]
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
[[The real kicker of this whole shitshow is that I see her (more innocuous sounding) posts in a lot of desi blogs. Either they don't care about the casteism and blatant transphobia or they agree with her views. I don't know which is worse.]]

vro0m’s rewatch - 168/332
2016 Australian GP
Alright. After these few months of hiatus on my side it is time to get back to our project and watch the 2016 season. As always, let’s set some context before we start.
Team changes :
Surprisingly we are back to 11 teams? Ohhhh Haas is joining the competition! Tbh I didn’t even notice they weren’t there until now lol.
RBR and Toro Rosso stopped working with Renault (remember the drama at the beginning of the 2015 season? no surprise there) but they actually… are still… using Renault engines? except they’re called TAG heuer? Very confused. Anyway Toro Rosso is back on a Ferrari engine so that’s also weird.
Renault is however back as a team as they purchased Lotus
Marussia is now called Manor Racing and are now using Mercedes PUs
Driver changes :
So Haas is joining with Grosjean and Gutierrez. In 2015 Grosjean was with Lotus and Gutierrez was a reserve driver.
Renault hired Joylon Palmer as a new F1 driver and originally he was supposed to race alongside Maldonado who had a contract with Lotus. But in the end, his sponsors were “unable to fulfil their contractual obligations to the team” and he was replaced by Magnussen who had a contract with McLaren in 2015, as a reserve driver I believe.
Marussia/Manor also changed their line-up and started with two rookies which is a bold move : Pascal Wehrlein and Rio Haryanto (literally never heard his name).
There was also mid-season stuff but we’ll talk about it as it happens.
So all in all here’s how we’re starting the season :
Ferrari : Seb + Raikkonen
Force India : Perez + Hulkenberrg
Haas : Grosjean + Gutierrez
McLaren : Alonso + Jenson
Mercedes : Nico + Lewis
Manor : Haryanto + Wehrlein
RedBull : Ricciardo + Kvyat
Renault : Magnussen + Palmer
Sauber : Ericsson + Nasr
Toro Rosso : Verstappen + Sainz
Williams : Massa + Valtteri
Calendar changes :
We are in for no less than 21 races this time. Watching these seasons is obviously gonna get longer and longer, I hope you are patient.
The European GP is back on the calendar but is now happening in Baku rather than Valencia.
The German GP is back on the calendar.
The order is also changed with the Russian GP happening earlier in the year and the Malaysian GP happening later in the year which feels weird but makes sense.
Rule changes :
From Monaco onward the drivers are allowed to change helmet designs for one weekend per season
Some ridiculous change was implemented to artificially make the car louder because idiotic fans at the time criticised the new engines for not being noisy enough apparently
The teams now have more tokens to develop the PUs
The pre-season tests were reduced from 3 to 2
New “ultrasoft” tyres for street circuits, and Pirelli is now bringing 3 different dry tyres instead of 2 : the third one (the softest available for the weekend) is only given to the teams reaching Q3 and then the drivers have to choose what 10 tyre sets they want for the race and have to use 2 different compounds during the race
The stewards have more power to enforce track limits
Any driver that causes an aborted start has to start from the pit lane
The gearbox penalties are now applied in the order in which they were given
The VSC is now also used during FPs
The drivers are now able to use DRS as soon as the VSC period is ended rather than having to wait 2 laps for it to be activated again
The quali format was revised just 2 weeks before the season began! However the new format was abandoned just 2 GP in because it was heavily criticised. I don’t exactly know what it was, we will learn about it as we go.
The stewards have more power to monitor radio comms in an attempt to end coded messages and driver coaching. There was apparently a controversy about it during the season though and it was later relaxed a bit but we will also see that as we go.
The superlicence was also made more difficult to apply for because of the controversial way Max got his at 16 after only 1 F3 season.
And that’s it for preseason context. Let’s get started!
Oh funny! I can see Lewis doing that thing that surprised everyone in the 2023 Canadian GP in the skysports opening, you know, the head shaking?
They are taking the 2016 class photo. And already they are saying that the new quali format was scrapped after one race. The team principals were unanimous about it. But it still needs to be voted by the commission. Renault still thinks they can tweak it to make it work. Hill says the first session was the most interesting when it should be the other way around. Lewis is on pole though ! Hill says it immediately puts to rest any rumour, like he was spreading, that Nico might have the upper hand after the end of the last season. Let's see exactly what this new format was about with the quali report.
So after 7 minutes in Q1 the slowest driver was eliminated. Nico went wide, but after 7 minutes Wehrlein was the one at the bottom. Then Kvyat was also sent away. People are shaking their heads in the garages. Q2. Magnussen was the next one out, followed by Jenson, and Alonso. Apparently there was a lot of time with no cars on track. Q3, Seb got provisional pole but Lewis did better. We hear a radio message saying "we are not planning to go out" with 4 minutes to go. Zero cars on track. The drivers are walking around in the pit lane. Nobody is happy with this. It makes no sense.
Then we hear all the TPs saying it's shit. Then Lewis, with a gorgeous pair of clear glasses, says "Let's find out what the fans want. Has anyone asked?"
Tumblr media
In the end, the starting grid goes Lewis, Nico, Seb, Raikkonen, Max, Massa, Sainz, Ricciardo, Perez, Hulkenberg.
Horner says himself the TPs are a "pretty dysfunctional group" but for once they were unanimous about it. They decided to go back to what it was the previous years. He says the problem is not the quali format. But Ted wonders if they know what it is the fans want, which is closer racing. Horner, in a rare good moment, says the issue is each team is trying to protect their own competitiveness when they need to look at the bigger picture. And so he thinks it should be taken out of the teams' hands and someone else should be deciding. But basically, as Hill explains, what he's rooting for is Bernie making the decisions, and Bernie is his friend. So. Yeah.
Hill says Nico has been defensive in his interviews. (But I'm wary of his opinions because he's an idiot.) And AGAIN they mention Lewis spending maybe too much time on catwalks or red carpets but AGAIN they admit he proved them wrong already this weekend. Istg. Like I said the other day about the 2023 season they've been saying this for decades and they just keep going even though he's shown them otherwise time and time again.
Lewis says getting pole was incredible and thanks the crowd. He says he hopes the race will be more exciting for them than it was yesterday. Johnny asks if he's worried about any car behind him but he says he's only looking forward.
There's a segment about Mercedes' filming day.
Tumblr media
Johnny is there. He finds Lewis. "There he is! Having fun?" he asks. There's a pause. "Does it look like it?" Lewis says with a smile. It's not his favourite time of the year I think. Johnny asks him what it is he needs to drive a car fast. "I'm surprised you're asking me that question," he says. He then answers he thinks it's because he's willing to go further than most.
The filming is happening in the W07, so the 2016 car. "It's dancing about all the time," Lewis says from the cockpit. "It's just like targeting, like with a gun." I have zero idea what that means. When he's asked if he's happy to be in the car, he says it's amazing.
As we see Lewis and Nico side by side in the background talking with someone during the car reveal, Simon says things seem pretty relaxed here. Mercedes again seems competitive although the question of how Ferrari will fare against them remains.
Lewis was asked if anything less than winning a WDC would be a failure to him now. He says it's not all about winning although naturally that's their goal. "It's about the journey as well." We see him chatting, smiling, with Nico.
Tumblr media
"How much do you enjoy the psychological games with your teammate and how much is mischief?" Simon asked Nico during their shared interview. "Physically harder and harder," Nico says. Lewis agrees. "We're getting older," Nico continues. "Crazy, yeah," Lewis adds. "I've seen some grey hairs on you. So yeah, you know how it is." Nico smiles wide, Toto is standing between them. "You're only 6 months behind me, man." Nico and Toto are still smiling while Lewis is deadpan. They want it to be fun and relaxed but that's not really how it feels. Back to the part of the interview where Lewis is alone. Simon asks if he enjoys bickering with someone he's known and raced against for so long. Lewis reiterates that ever since he was young he's honestly never tried to play any games. He's dead serious throughout these snippets btw. Not smiling. Not warm. Not friendly. Dead serious. Again with the "do your talking on the track" from Anthony. He says of course they have to do these interviews and things are being taken literally and twisted. He says there are pictures of him smiling in press conferences while Nico is thinking about something and has a straight face (they illustrate it with a moment from the 2015 US GP press conf) "and they say there's something going on, you know… [...] People like 'oh this is mind games'."
Meanwhile Nico is smiling and teasing. Everybody has strengths and weaknesses he says, and of course he knows Lewis very well now. But, he adds, the most important thing is for him to get the job done and perform at his best.
Lewis on his side says he has mount everest to climb this year. People are gonna be pulling to make him slip and get ahead. He says he'll have to work harder than he's ever worked in his life to stay ahead because every year they get stronger. He talks about these "youngins" coming while he's getting older.
Tumblr media
Now he cracks a smile while we cut to a serious Nico. Lewis has beaten him in the past few years so, he admits, the odds are in his favour. "And it's gonna be tough to beat him, he's done better, you know, recently." But that's the kind of challenge he loves. They're already asking Lewis if the championship is his, they haven't even started racing yet. Lewis shuts it down. "The championship is never yours until you've actually got it and taken it home."
On the grid, Brundle asks Niki if his boys are allowed to fight even if it means they end up in the boonies. Niki says they are not allowed to end up "anywhere", they can fight each other (I think? I don't understand what he's saying very well) but they have to watch Sebastian and their tyres. Brundle says they are now allowed to talk about strategy over the radio. Niki basically says they already fucked up with the quali change so it's good they quickly went back on their decision about that. Brundle asks if he's concerned about the Ferraris. "You never know." The tyres are new, it's hot, it's an open race.
It's time for the first race of the season.
Formation lap. They changed the starting procedure from two clutches to one clutch. I have no idea what it means but it might be relevant to some botched start so let's mention it.
And while they're lining up on the grid once again one RedBull is stopped right in the middle of it. It's Kyvat. He's stranded behind the safety car. What now? Yep. The lights are flashing on and off. It's a second formation lap. The marshals run to Kvyat. He's confused about the procedure. He's out of the car running around in the garage, unsure what he's supposed to do.
Here we go.
They are racing!
OH MY GOD. SEB IMMEDIATELY GETS HIMSELF BETWEEN THE TWO MERCS! AND HE TAKES THE LEAD WHILE RAIKKONEN FINDS HIMSELF IN P2 IN THE FIRST CORNER! Ohhhhh the Ferraris are HERE. Let's go! Lewis has fallen down though. It's Nico in P3. Lewis is battling a Williams. Unbelievable! As Brundle notes though, the problem is probably mostly due to the start procedure change. The mercs struggled to get away. Magnussen has a puncture. And that's lap one. The order now goes Seb, Raikkonen, Nico, Max, Massa, Lewis, Sainz, Hulkenberg, Ricciardo and Alonso.
Gutierrez, P20, reports problems with his engine. Lewis is just half a second away from Massa now but Sainz is also less than a second behind him. Lewis attacks! And he overtakes Massa from the outside! And we get the start replay. Seb's start was really outstanding and then Lewis got caught between Nico and the side of the track (not by Nico's fault, just racing) and that's how he fell further back. Nico is closing on Raikkonen now. Meanwhile Lewis is half a second away from Max. He takes a look but the straight isn't long enough to attack yet. 0.3. But he's stuck behind him! The tyres are graining.
It's lap 10. Ricciardo overtakes Massa right in front of the grandstands, the crowd is loving it. Lewis : "I can't get past the guy". Nico is also still behind Raikkonen. Lewis is told on the radio to extend this stint. Some pitting in the midfield. Valtteri overtakes Palmer for P11. And Nico pits! Ricciardo and Alonso are also in the pits. Nico is out in front of Hulkenberg. And Lewis is heard on the radio saying there must be another strategy as he can't stay stuck behind Max and Bono says, again, they're trying to go longer. But now if he pits, or if Max pits, they'd end up behind Hulkenberg. Seb pits from the lead. He's out in front of Nico but it's so close and Nico attacks! Seb defends! Damn that's RACING. Raikkonen is asking to be boxed. Max has pitted. He overtakes Valtteri for P9. Nico sets the fastest lap. Verstappen overtakes Jenson for P8. And Seb is catching Lewis now. And he overtakes him for P2. Now what. They went long and they are a full pit stop down on them. Nico is getting close as well. They are on different strategies but Lewis is making no move to let him go, of course. Eventually he pits. Raikkonen is also there. Raikkonen gets the supersoft so you wonder why they made him go longer. Lewis, on the other hand, gets the medium as we expected. He's gonna hope to get to the end. He's out in front of Massa in P– oh it's a crash! Gutierrez is in the gravel. OH GOD THERE'S A CAR UPSIDE DOWN?! It's Alonso! He's out. But he's not okay. He's limping and then he folds over himself with his hands on his knees, as Gutierrez exits his car. Gutierrez jogs to him as Alonso starts to walk again. They shake hands. The marshals check on him as he leaves the gravel. Oh my god. The car is. I don't know how to describe that. Shredded. You wouldn't be able to tell it was a car if it wasn't for the wheels sticking out at weird angles. Seriously. I think it's missing the front part? Unbelievable. How did Alonso walk away from that? Loads of debris on track as well, of course the safety car has been deployed. Several cars pit, expectedly. Here's the replay of the crash. Holy shit. I don't even know how to paint that picture. Alonso is coming up behind Gutierrez. He decided to switch sides. His front right catches on Gutierrez rear left. The axle immediately breaks which sends him violently into the barriers while Gutierrez gets a rear puncture that sends him spinning. All the other wheels of Alonso's car break in the crash. The car is sent sliding into the gravel trap. The sudden deceleration sends the car spinning upon it's axis. Full barrel roll and a half in the air above the gravel trap. It lands kind of halfway upside down on the rear part of the cockpit (thankfully not the front part, I mean he'd have. Lost his head. Possibly.) It bounces back up and finds itself almost upright and then I can't see anymore because there's so much debris, gravel, dust and smoke in the way. The race is redflagged.
So it's lap 19. Seb is in the lead, followed by Nico, Raikkonen, Daniel, Verstappen, Sainz, Lewis, Massa, Grosjean and Hulkenberg for the top 10. It's terrible for Merc's strategy : they kept Lewis out for nothing. He pitted, found himself down the field, and now everybody can change tyres and it will have been for nothing. We won't know how that strategy would have played out. We see Alonso walking back past his wreck of a car. He's taken the helmet off and is giving thumbs up to the crowd that applauds him. It's unbelievable that he's okay. Really. Lewis is out of the car. Walking away with his helmet on. We hear Gutierrez confirm on radio he is okay and immediately asking "is he okay?" The wreck is on the crane now and the only wheels left are folded and dangling beneath it, and the left side pod is entirely missing. Vaporised upon impact.
They change Lewis' front wing. Now Lewis is on the pit wall talking with his engineers. We have a restart time. They're getting ready to go again.
The accident prompts talk of the halo. Crofty wonders if it would have trapped Alonso in the car. It would have saved his head if he'd landed on the front part of his car rather than the rear, man. Brundle says when he crashed he found himself in a similar position as Alonso and it would have been an issue especially if the car had been on fire.
Lewis is still on mediums. So they intend to go on with this strategy. Nico has been put on the mediums. The Ferraris are on supersofts… They will have to stop again. Mmh. Interesting.
And they go again, under safety car for a lap. Seb backs them up. Here we go. Verstappen overtakes Ricciardo. Seb is already getting away, 1.3 ahead after 1 lap. Raikkonen is in the pits?! On the radio we hear him say he broke something. Oh yeah, it's smoking. As soon as he slows down it catches on fire. It's over for him. Lewis is closing on Sainz. But he's 10 seconds behind Nico. He needs to get moving. At the front, Seb is trying to get a gap big enough to pit. Ericsson gets a drive through because his team was working on his car too late after the restart signal.
It's lap 30. Seb is 3.1 seconds in the lead. Nico, Daniel, Verstappen, Sainz, Lewis still P6, Massa, Grosjean, Hulkenberg and Valtteri for the top 10. Jenson pits. Crofty notes he's the first one of supersofts to do so. Lewis is wheel to wheel with Sainz but he’s on the outside and can't overtake him still. Sainz says he needs to stop. He pits. He goes again. He's out in P12. People are switching to the medium as the track temperature goes down. Ted says Nico is winning this race. Verstappen pits as well, but nobody was ready and it's a loooong one. He's down in P12. Crofty thinks he might have made the call himself. Anyway Lewis up in P4. Max : "How many times do I have to say I’ve got problems with my tyres? I wanted to pit first." Apparently he'd been asking for a tyre change for a while and possibly he just went for it as they wouldn't pit him? Ballsy. Ferrari need to pit Seb. Because the Mercs don't necessarily need to stop again. And Nico is only 1.1 behind Seb. And here we go, he pits. It's the softs and ohhh they struggle to put them on! That's bad for Seb! 5.6 stop! He's out ahead of Massa in P4. It means he's chasing Lewis now. Sainz and Verstappen are basically on Palmer trying to overtake for P9. "Can I try to get past?" Max asks. "Yes," is the answer. Ohhh my god I would be so stressed if I was them because now they're chasing each other and it's very close. In a very amused voice, Crofty notes we've already heard Max's colourful language this race and he expects more over the radio now. "Let me try because this takes too long," he says. "Let's do it," the engineer answers. But Sainz isn't told to move aside. Meanwhile Lewis is gaining over Ricciardo.
Lap 40. Nico is 9 seconds ahead of Daniel, himself just 1.2 ahead of Lewis. Then come Seb, 8 seconds down, Massa, Grosjean, Hulkenberg, Valtteri, Palmer, and it's the two Toro Rossos still fighting each other. Verstappen : "Come on we have to do something." Sainz is told to push. "I am pushing. Don't tell me to push." He's told otherwise they will swap next lap. Oh and Ericsson is really slow on track now, as we cut to images of Alonso, all smiles, walking around the paddock. Max attacks, Sainz locks up. The positions don't change. Sainz is actively defending against Max. Franz Tost shakes his head as he watches on. And now, Lewis has DRS over Daniel. Let's go. 0.4. 0.2. And it's done. 10 seconds to catch Nico. And Sainz FINALLY overtakes Palmer. Verstappen tries to follow and he's wheel to wheel with him down the straight. He just about makes it. Daniel pits from P3, out in P5. Verstappen chases Sainz. Ricciardo overtakes Massa for P4. Lewis is not closing on Nico… Verstappen : "Always when I’m in front I’m pulling away, now you don’t let me pass, it’s a fucking joke, really."
Lap 50. Lewis is still 10 seconds off Nico, Seb 3.7 off him. Then Daniel, Massa, Grosjean, Hulkenberg, Valtteri, Sainz, and Verstappen. But suddenly, less than a lap later, Lewis is 8.2 away and Seb 2.8 behind him. Perez is told his brake wear is critical and he won't be able to make it to the end if he keeps it up. And Lewis makes a mistake, he outbrakes himself, and Seb is right behind him. 0.6. 0.5. Phew. Oh. Verstappen spun. Ohhh they made contact. Yeah well. Not surprised. Sainz locked up and Max hit him. Back to the front. Seb is half a second behind still. 3 laps to go. OH AND SEB LOCKED UP AND GOES DEEP! He went on the grass and that ends the chase. Lewis is 5 seconds away now. He apologises over radio.
And it's the end of the race!
Nico, Lewis, Seb.
Lewis and Nico briefly hug as they get out of their cars. Ohhh. Seb goes to Lewis as he dries his hair. He talks to him. Then Lewis takes a step away with a big grin as Seb throws his cap at him. Cheeky.
Tumblr media
They walk away talking, while Nico is left behind.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They talk on the way to the podium. Seb elbows him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nico for some reason hugs Mark Webber who's doing the podium interviews. Lewis dumps champagne on him as he talks to the crowd.
Tumblr media
And Seb dumps his on Mark.
Tumblr media
Lewis says the team has done a great job but it was tricky out there. He loves that they had to come back from "far behind". Glad that no one was injured in the crash as well. He says it's impossible to follow around here. But a great result for the team. Seb asks Webber if he wants more champagne. Webber says he gets drunk really fast these days and Seb says "I know, I know you do, and then you start singing summer '69, remember?" Nico and Lewis are talking during his interview.
Niki says they wanted competition but that's too much competition! But he's happy with the result. He doesn't know what would have happened without the red flag, if it was in their favour or not. He refuses to speculate. He thinks the bad start was indeed due to the new procedure.
Also noteworthy : Haas managed to score points in their first ever race.
Oh okay so they've already decided to introduce the halo in 2017 so that's why they're talking about it so much (no they didn't? i don't know why i wrote that? was it supposed to be the case and in the end they didn't or did i get that wrong?) The ex-drivers seem to mostly think it's a bad idea but Jenson says it's a good thing.
Alonso is not blaming anyone for the crash and he's just happy to be here.
Lewis is happy with his damage limitation. He doesn't think the issue at the start was due to the procedure but possibly wheelspin. He says the start itself wasn't "shocking, wasn't the worst" but then he got pushed off by Nico into turn 1 and then he lost ground and he's grateful he was able to recover. The journalist says Mercedes did an awful lot of work on the medium tyres over the winter and did that win them the race? He nods.
Tumblr media
He says the hard thing is to know how long and how hard you can lean on your tyres. He says when he had 20 laps left he thought he wouldn't make it because they started sliding but they kept going. Then he locked up at some point and Sebastian was "on his tail" and after that it was so slippery. He tells about it all with the most childlike smile and enjoyment.
Tumblr media
He says the team did a great job with the strategy. He says they did expect Ferrari to be close, but he says Nico doesn't seem to think he had trouble following them so it'll be interesting. He interrupts himself. "You know once Sebastian was behind me," his eyes crinkle, "I was excited because I was having a race with Sebastian you know but unfortunately this track doesn't allow you to have serious battles”.
Tumblr media
Nico says he had a good start but Seb had a flying start. He also says he never looked behind him, didn't know someone was there, didn't feel contact with Lewis and apologises for anything he might have been a part of there.
They also talk about the fight between Max and Sainz and finally the journalists are a bit critical in that they say it shows that Max is young because he lost his head a bit and if he'd been cooler he might have gotten further.
Absolutely losing it at Ted mentioning Iñaki Rueda seen holding his head on the pit wall after the race realising he'd fucked up their strategy.

I've been watching Kaleidoscope on Netflix and it's made me think more about the Bridgerton 11 AU...
The Bridgerton's are a well respected and well known family and no one suspects their criminal(ish) behaviour.
they don't ever do anything unless it is for a good cause... Robin Hood Esque... righting wrongs so to speak, the wrongs that the justice system aren't able to right...
Anthony being the planner, he's the one who organises everything but he's not the one who gets the jobs... he is also a Lawyer in his own right, like his father was before him.
Simon is the money man and fence. he comes into the family organisation much to Anthony's unhappiness when he gets involved with Daphne... and she can't help but let him in. He is an accountant in his normal life
Kate is a bit of muscle and the main brains behind everything (think Rusty in Ocean's 11) like Anthony she is a Lawyer and she's only involved after she hired the group to help sort out an issue with her step-mother's family who were hiding their inheritance and after arguing with Anthony they end up together...
Daphne is the fence and source of things, she's got a knack of befriending people and getting information from some people, she's able to meddle her way into situations and get information. she gets involved less once she starts having babies and is a "stay at home mum" and she's the one who sets up the adverts and monitors for the requests for help
Benedict artist/forger/master thief/Scout... he is able to make almost perfect recreations of art work, even down to the strokes of the brushes so any insurance and curator wouldn't be able to tell the difference... its a skill he learned from his Grandmother. he is a photographer and artist in his own right.
Eloise hacker... she gets information from places that Anthony doesn't want to know about. she's able to get through firewalls' and is a tech genius... until Hyacinth outshines her and locks her out of her own computers at the age of 16 and Eloise finally relents and agrees that Hyacinth's skills out shine hers but Eloise is still a better information source from people and she's GREAT at creating a diversion and a fast driver...
Fran Fran is the least criminally minded of the family but like Daphne she has people skills, she's able to blend into a background or simper and smile her way into getting information... she is a great fence as she's got a contact in India... She is able to blend in and often changes her appearance to help the family out on jobs...
Colin works as a fence, he gets goods in and out of the country on his travels, he is the person who goes to the meets to do the exchanges and on the occasions they have to negotiate, he is often sent in due to his charm, though after he gets scammed himself, they stop asking him to do the negations so much... Colin is learning to be a bit more of a thief, picking locks and the likes (think Matt Damon's character Linus... he wants to do more and is eager but often makes a mess of it)
Greg mechanics expert, he loves building things as a kid so tinkering with cars and making electronics becomes second nature...
Hyacinth becomes a tech expert and lets be honest... the explosives expert. she can make controlled ones that leave no trace and ones that cause diversions... she scares Anthony a little with her abilities...
Sophie after the team help her out with the Silver Swans painting... and she starts going out with Benedict she becomes part of the team, she has the ability to change her appearance like Fran and become a face in the crowd, her life as a "maid" allows her to be blend in but because she so little and light, and has a gymnastic background, she's their acrobat and grease woman... she can crawl through the smallest of spaces...
VIOLET: Is basically like M. she oversees it all, she ensures that there is a good cover for her children and in-laws when they are working jobs and because of her connections (i.e the Rokesby's) they are never suspected or caught...

Wildest Dreams Chapter 16 - 'tis the damn season
Chapter summary: It's the 2018 edition of Silly Season. The driver market. Bee's F2 seat is assured, at least, but there are always other options in play.
Content warning: N/A
Chapter word count: 3,855
Author's Notes: This chapter is super dialogue-heavy, but it's really kind of a transitional chapter. But now we're starting to get somewhere!
Not many notes here, just two:
Yes, keen observers will note that Bee is taking the spot that Nicholas Latifi got in 2019 as the Williams reserve driver. If you like GOATifi, fear not - he ends up doing reserve duties/getting signed to a different team on the grid. There's another driver that I'm just going to pretend never existed instead.
It is not unprecedented that someone could be a reserve at with two teams, but only if the teams have the same engine supplier, as far as I know.
McLaren and Mercedes have had an agreement to share reserve/test drivers for a few years, since McLaren switched from Renault to Mercedes engines. I believe Esteban may have been a Mercedes reserve during his time with Force India, because Toto was his manager. Both of Mercedes' FE drivers are reserves for both teams, so I don't think it's unfathomable that Bee could be the first reserve for Williams and the second reserve for Mercedes. And while I'm striving for as much accuracy as possible, this is still fanfiction!
Previous Chapter
Brackley, Northampton, England, United Kingdom Mid-September, 2018
Before Sochi, Bee found out that George was being promoted to Formula 1 for the next season, having secured a multi-year contract with Williams. It hadn’t been announced widely yet, but she was incredibly happy for him. It wasn’t an enormous surprise, as he had been doing development and simulator work for Williams as well as Mercedes for a while, and had previously done FP1 tests in their car.
Bee had been a bit confused when she’d found out about George doing test work for Williams, but she never asked - there were a lot of things in the world of F1 she didn’t understand, but things had become a little clearer when she got a call from Claire Williams, the de facto team principal of Williams, herself.
“We haven’t officially met, I know, but I’ve heard a lot about you from Susie, Toto, and George.” She said on the phone. “And I saw your outstanding performance in Monza. I know you are already testing with Mercedes for a day in Abu Dhabi, but I called to see if you wanted to test in a Williams as well.”
“Well… it does sound intriguing, but I would like to check with Toto first. He’s my manager, so -”
“Sure, of course. I’ve mentioned this to him already, so he won’t be surprised. Hopefully, I will be talking to you soon.”
Bee had her regular meeting with Toto a few days later.
“So, I got a call from Claire Williams. She wants me to test at Abu Dhabi for them, but I’m already testing for us… I didn’t realize that was allowed, actually.”
“Oh, yes.” Toto said. “We are Williams’ engine supplier, as well as the engine supplier for Force India, so you are able to test with them if you’d like to. It would be an issue, say, if you wanted to test with Ferrari or Renault. But that is why George was hired by Williams. He’d tested with them before. There are also a few other things we are able to share between our supplied teams - reserve drivers, for instance.”
There were so many little intricacies and rules to how much staff and drivers attached to teams could interact with other teams - mostly to protect trade secrets and technical information. Bee suspected that the Mercedes-Williams relationship was a bit unique amongst the various teams on the grid - Toto used to be an investor and a non-executive chairman of Williams. Susie was a test and development driver for the team. Valtteri had come from Williams. If she remembered correctly, Nico Rosberg had started his career in Williams as well. Some joked that Williams was the Mercedes junior team, like Toro Rosso was to Red Bull, but that wasn’t quite accurate.
“I am assuming you would like to? I think it would be a good opportunity for you. And it’s a good sign that teams are starting to take notice of you, I think, which makes sense. You’re third in the F2 championship after Monza, that’s an incredible achievement.”
“I guess I don’t see why I wouldn’t.”
“Good! Then, while we’re in Sochi, I think it would be a good idea to set up a meeting with her so we can work out the details. Maybe we’ll get lunch.”
George’s graduation into F1 was definitely well-deserved, and fortunate, given that he was on track to win the F2 championship. If he did, he wouldn’t be able to do another year in F2 anyway - you were ineligible to participate in the series again after winning the drivers’ championship in Formula 2.
As far as Bee’s plans for next season, she’d continue her simulator and test work with Mercedes. It was already confirmed and announced by Andy Roche, the new team principal for the team that would become UNI-Virtuosi, that she would be taking an F2 seat for her second season - no need to fight it out and hope for the best in Abu Dhabi this year. It was a relief. Artem moved to Japan to compete in Super Formula, and would be replaced by a rising F3 driver. Her incoming teammate would be a Chinese driver named Zhou Guanyu, who was a Renault junior.
Once again, though, she was stuck with a blue racing suit for the season. She cursed when she saw the preview images that Andy had emailed her. At least this time, it was a royal blue, and not a navy blue. And there were blocks of yellow up the sides, so if she was able to keep her custom bumblebee helmet instead of using a team-designed helmet, at least it would match something. She considered asking Toto - jokingly, of course, why Mercedes junior drivers didn’t get a livery and suit that matched their sponsoring team, like Red Bull and Renault did. Guanyu was attached to the Renault academy, so his suit and car livery was black and yellow.
There were two races left in the season for her - Sochi and Abu Dhabi. There was a month between Monza and Sochi, and another month between Sochi and Abu Dhabi. The F1 flyaway races were happening during this time. She wasn’t going to any of them except for the US Grand Prix, and then she’d be going to Michigan for a few days with her parents to visit her grandparents. She hadn’t actually seen them in about five years now. They came to Germany then, but now they were getting a bit too old to travel internationally.
During the lead-up to Sochi, she was putting in hard service in the gym and the simulator. She spent the days hammering out shoulder presses, delt flys, bench dips, working with resistance bands, working on neck strength, core exercises, leg presses, pilates - she hadn’t been quite as prepared as she’d like to have been for her test in the W09, and would rather not be in the kind of pain she was in after that test again.
Bee had always used exercise as a way to siphon off her anxiety. This had not changed, even after she had started working with Natalie. And the more she started thinking about being asked to test for an additional team, the more she realized that it might be the first step into an actual Formula 1 seat, which made her anxious. Her anxiety spurred her on to put in more sets, more reps, more weight, more hours in the gym.
She woke up one morning, a week and a half before Sochi, and was unable to turn her head. She tried not to panic as she drove to the factory with some difficulty (hard to look both ways in traffic when you can’t really move your neck) to see Rebecca, the physiotherapist the team had on contract, before going straight to the doctor.
“It’s a strain,” she said, gently palpating the tender cord of muscles around Bee’s neck and shoulders. “You’ve been pushing a bit too hard. But it should feel better in a day or two. You just need to rest for now.”
“Would, like… I don’t know, massage help?” Bee said.
“No, honestly, it would just do more damage to the inflamed issue at this point. Once the pain is out of the acute phase, we can do that, but for now, you will just need to take care of it the old-fashioned way - rest, ice, and some paracetamol. And don’t be tempted to try to stretch it right now, that will just make it worse.”
As she was applying the KT tape to Bee’s neck and shoulder (“it will help with the inflammation”), Rebecca said, “If I catch you in the gym again before you go to Sochi, I’m going to tell Toto.”
“But -”
“You’ve been going too hard at it lately, and there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. You need to rest.”
“I’m just trying to make sure I’m ready for my tests this year. I wasn’t ready for Hungary and felt awful for the next two races afterwards.”
“I know, I get it. But you’ll have plenty of time between Sochi and Abu Dhabi to be ready.” Rebecca said. “Trust me.”
“Fine,” Bee grumbled, as she struggled to put her shirt back on.
“And stay away from the sim, too.” Rebecca added, seemingly reading Bee’s mind. “When I say you need some rest, I mean it.”
Faced with the possibility of having to sit in her flat, idle, for over a week, Bee decided to catch a last-minute flight to Stuttgart for a few days, and fly on to Sochi from there. If she was going to have to sit around the house anyway, she thought it was better to spend time with her parents than spend time alone in Northampton.
“So, what did you do to your shoulder, exactly…?” her dad said at dinner the night Bee got home, eyeing the bright stripes of KT tape visible under the collar of her shirt.
“Just overdid it in the gym is all, it’s just a strain. It should be fine in a few days.”
John looked a little confused. “Now, I admit, I never played sports growing up, and racing is the only sport that I watched, but… I guess I’m just surprised by how much of your time you spend in the gym, or with a physio, how much you have to pay attention to your diet, any of that. It’s not something I expected when you started moving up to single-seaters, that’s for sure.”
“Well… it takes a lot to drive these cars. It’s very physical. I was sore for a while after driving the W09 in Hungary, just because I didn’t anticipate how much more forceful taking corners would be.”
“I don’t doubt it. I just remember, when I was a teenager and it was Lauda, Hunt, Scheckter - those guys definitely didn’t live like elite athletes. It seemed like they did more partying than racing.” John said. “Then again, it seemed like a few of them died every season, so I guess they had to cope somehow. And, I suppose the cars are way faster now than they were then.
“I mean, I think a lot of the guys in F1 still do party quite a bit. Not everyone, though. But they also work their asses off.” Bee said.
“All things in balance.” John said.
Bee also made sure to have an appointment with Natalie before Sochi. They talked about how she was feeling ahead of being invited to test for another team.
“I guess it’s just… strange to think that I’m getting attention outside of Mercedes, even though Mercedes is a big team. It’s something I’ve always kind of… fantasized about happening but now things seem to be actually happening and I’m afraid of it for some reason.”
“What is it that you’re afraid of happening?”
“I don’t know. Wrecking their car, which costs them a fortune and could set back development time and affect their performance in races. Doing poorly at the test. Making myself look stupid and confirming that women don’t belong in motorsport?”
Natalie thought for a moment. “Well, let’s look at it this way. You’ve already had a test a few months ago, for an even bigger team than the one you’re testing for. That was on an actual race weekend, not post-season testing. And you did fine! More than, from what I remember. And you had an amazing performance at your last race, so I think you’ve proven that you belong. And it’s not like a male driver has never crashed during testing. It happens quite regularly, from what I remember.”
“I know, but, if they do it, people don’t blame it on their gender. If I do it, that’s the first thing they’ll blame.”
“Who are these ‘people’? Does anyone that knows anything about driving a Formula 1 car say that?” Natalie said.
“Well… no. I mean, there’s a team principal that might, but -”
“Okay. If they don’t know, their opinions surely can’t be worth much, and people will find something to complain about with any driver. And I know it’s not your team principal that says that, so his opinion isn’t worth much, either. There are a lot of people that support you. It’s going to be hard, but you just have to be more conscious of your yeasayers than your naysayers.”
Bee loved that she could always rely on Natalie to put things in perspective.
Adler District, Sochi, Krasnodar Krai, Russia September 27th, 2018
Toto let Bee know that they would meet Claire for lunch on the Thursday of Sochi’s race week. Bee’s flight landed in the morning and she went straight from the airport to the hotel to her meeting with Clare. Bee was a little surprised that they wouldn’t have just met in one of the team hospitality areas, or have arranged to meet in the UK. Grove, where Williams was based, wasn't too far from Brackley or Northampton, but Bee had noticed that she had a different - a distinctly American, despite growing up in Germany - definition of what constituted a “long drive” than most people from England.
Either way, Claire had picked a nice place that was right on the shore of the Black Sea, but not in the Olympic park by the track.
Bee spotted her when she stepped inside - Toto had not yet arrived. She’d seen Claire around the paddock, of course, but they hadn’t ever talked to each other. She recognized Claire’s pin-straight, shoulder-length brown hair and large, expressive eyes, never mind the white Williams Martini polo she was wearing.
Bee approached the table. Claire was reading the menu and hadn’t seen her yet.
“Hi, Claire?”
Claire looked up. “Phoebe!” she said, standing up and shaking Bee’s hand. “It’s so nice to finally meet you, I’ve seen you around the garages but I never thought to say hello.”
Bee sat down, and Claire followed suit, and continued. “I just wanted to say, I was so impressed by your performance in Monza. P1 in every session, and a lap record to boot - I’ve been around racing a long time, and trust me - that’s incredibly rare.”
Bee blushed. “Well, I think Monza is just a particularly good track for me, but -”
She was interrupted by Toto and Susie coming in. Bee waited while they exchanged greetings and hugs, and gave each of the Wolffs a hug herself.
“Sorry we’re late,” Toto said. “I was caught out by one of the engineers as I was trying to leave. You know how it can be. Hopefully I haven’t missed much!”
They all chatted a bit, about mundane things like flights, weather, the state of Bee’s shoulder and how she’d been barred from the gym via the threat of Toto hearing about it, George’s upcoming contract, and their prospects and predictions for the F2 and F1 races.
Finally, Claire said, “Well, let’s get to why we’re here. Phoebe, I fear I haven’t been completely transparent with you. I told you over the phone that I wanted to talk to you about testing, but it’s a bit more than that. Of course, I still want you to test in Abu Dhabi, but I’d also like to bring you on as a reserve driver for the next season, since we’re promoting George. You’ll still be able to run in F2, as I understand you already have a seat with Virtuosi. It’s rare that reserve drivers are ever used. I won’t say never, but we haven’t had to use one in a few years. In addition to joining us trackside at races, you would also be undertaking testing and development duties for us as well.”
Bee was stunned. She’d been surprised enough to have been offered a test, let alone a position as a third driver. It meant going to every race weekend with the team and staying prepared in case there was a need to step up and take the race seat  - if she accepted, it meant she could be a case of the flu away from her F1 debut.
“But - you haven’t… I haven’t even driven your car yet? What if I’m awful at it?”
“Well,” Claire said. “Ultimately, this offer is pending your test in Abu Dhabi. However, from your test in Hungary it’s clear you’re no slouch as a driver. And you had that performance in Monza. And… you may have had someone vouch for you as well. Well, two someones, one of whom has held the job before.”
Bee looked at Susie, who smiled at her. It was almost mischievous. Susie shrugged. Bee was a bit speechless. Her brain was trying to process it all.
“I won’t expect you to have an answer now, I imagine you will want to discuss things with Toto and there will likely be a bit of negotiation involved regarding your contract, anyway. But, we would be excited to have you on our roster.”
Bee caught a car with the Wolffs back to the paddock from the restaurant. She and Susie sat in the back seat, talking quietly to each other.
“You told Claire to make me the reserve for next year?” she said.
“Well, why wouldn’t I? She needed one, with Lance’s move to Racing Point, Sergey moving on, and George moving up. They didn’t really have a permanent reserve last year, and are bringing on George and another driver. You’re talented, you’re dedicated, and I think you’re ready for it. Plus, who is better to judge a candidate for an opening than the person that had the position before?”
“I don’t know. Honestly, there’s part of me that feels a bit bad, and it may sound strange but…”
She thought back to what she had told Will Buxton during his interview with her in Hungary on the morning of her test, and started to doubt her own words. They’d talked about this before, of course, but back then, Bee’s career and berth into Formula 1 was merely a hypothetical. She was now a hair’s breadth away from it being a reality.
“I’m stepping into the role you were in. I don’t want to… replace you or what you meant for the team, I guess.”
Susie put her hand on Bee’s shoulder. It was gentle and warm.
“I don’t see it as you replacing me, Bee, not at all. I never wanted to be the last one. The fact that I had to struggle is all worth it if I can help someone break the barriers that I wasn’t able to break through. I will always have a legacy in racing in my own right, and now… you get to be a part of that legacy, too.”
Bee almost started crying. She would have hugged Susie if they weren’t in the backseat of an SUV, so she simply settled for giving Susie’s hand a squeeze.
“That means… well, everything to me. I’ll do my best to make you proud.”
“I know you will. But, I’m already proud of you.”
There was a moment of quiet in the car, until Bee thought of something.
“Wait, she said someone else recommended me. Toto, was it you?”
Toto turned around in his seat a bit to look at Bee. “No. I mean, it’s not that I wouldn’t, but we’d just never talked about it until she called and told me that she wanted to meet while we were here. I am very pleased for you, obviously. You absolutely deserve it."
Bee couldn’t equal her Monza performance in Sochi, nor was she expecting to be able to. She placed P6 in the feature race and P8 in the sprint race. She felt terrible for Artem, though. He wasn’t even in the points on the Feature race, which must have felt terrible in front of a home crowd. She was hoping for a decent result for both of them, racing in Russia as part of an ostensibly Russian team, but it was not to be, but that was racing.
Brackley, Northampton, England, United Kingdom October 16th, 2018
Bee and Toto had their regular meeting when Toto returned from Japan, and Bee expected them to talk about Claire’s contact. Toto said that’s what they would do, but -
“It does somewhat complicate things. Since George is getting promoted to the Williams seat, we are down one reserve and development driver. Truthfully, George is still considered a reserve driver for us. We have the option to borrow him, should the need arise. And, at the moment, it looks like Esteban will be replaced at Racing Point because of Lance being moved to the team. I do not know if a seat will open up for him elsewhere for the time being, but if not, he will be our first reserve.”
Toto leaned back in his chair a little. Bee knew that Esteban Ocon was another Mercedes development driver, but he had been driving with other teams for a few years now. “However, I had intended to offer the second reserve position to you before Claire mentioned that she was looking at you. You’ve done extremely well for us with simulation and development, and you do deserve the position. I do not intend to hold you back from it, because I’m you manager, and it is definitely in the best interest of your career. But I was curious - we have, previously, had a second reserve driver that did part-time development for us. That is an option we have if you’d like to take it.”
Bee thought for a moment. “Wouldn’t that be… a conflict of interest?”
“Well, yes, and no. As I told you before, we couldn’t do this sort of thing with a team that didn’t use our engines. But Williams does. And the history of our teams is fairly interlinked at this point, so it wouldn’t be so much of an issue. You would be bound by a mutual non-disclosure agreement anyway, and those are pretty serious if you break them.”
“It’s tempting,” Bee said. “I’m excited about the Williams reserve, but… I don’t know, I’ve been a little conflicted because I don’t want to leave Mercedes behind. I’m guessing you’d still be my manager either way. But… isn’t that a lot for one person to do?”
“Well, we would have some flexibility. It’s mostly just so we retain you in our driver development pipeline, and so you still have access to our resources. Williams is a good team with a lot of heart, but… as far as budget goes, well. It’s not quite the same. You will see.”
They spent a while working out the details, things to finalize with Claire when they would next meet in Austin. Bee’s schedule would be busy next season, but the compensation was incredibly fair for the work she would be doing. Toto emphasized that he would work with her on scheduling for her Mercedes duties, to try to keep everything manageable. Plus, because he was her manager, Claire would have to work with Toto on any matters related to Bee and her schedule anyway.
