I don't think people are talking enough about this, It is Mahashivratri, Shakti-Shiv Vivaah, once a year celebration but this Year, it came on Friday, so did Women's day. Friday, which is known as Shakti's day. Sadhak(s) of Durga Maa, Laxmi Ji, and Maa Saraswati practice their Sadhana on this week day.
What an auspicious day that celebrates Shakti & Shiv.
The feeling of attending the Jagrata for the first time!
They say, 'when in Rome, do as the Romans do'. This Maha Shivaratri was another instance when I needed to adapt to this new place.
In Odisha, we visit Lord Shiva temple both during the day and at night on Maha Shivaratri and worship the Lord. We keep fast the whole day and break it only after the Mahadeepa is raised atop the temple, which normally occurs between 9 pm to midnight, varying from temple to temple. Some people also light earthen lamps and sit vigil in the Shiva temples till the rise of Mahadeepa.
But this year, I visited the temple during the day and also at night. I poured the milk on the Shiva Linga myself and also offered Bel leaves, flowers and fruits, which was a very novel experience. Back home, this is usually done by priests and we just hand our offerings to them. Unless, you are performing a special ritual like Rudrabhishek, you don't get to pour the milk or water yourself.
After returning home, I saw the neighbours organising a Jagrata. I broke my fast and went to see the ritual. I sat there for some time, listened to the devotional songs and returned home. Previously, I had only seen Jagrata in serials. It was quite a feeling to experience it in person. The idols were beautiful and the enthusiasm in the atmosphere was contagious. I would definitely remember this for the rest of my life.
1. Truth
The first law of Shiva Karma is the truth. This law asks the followers to follow the path of truth, justice, and being true to themselves and those who are around. Remember that dishonesty and false deeds may prevail in small battles, but the truth always wins the war.
2. Knowledge is God.
A single person cannot possess the knowledge of everything, but everyone may possess the knowledge of something. We should find that seed of knowledge within us, and then do all our karma around it.
3. Everything is an illusion.
No matter what life you’re living, at what place you are; if your happiness depends on the materialistic things you own, then happiness is an illusion for you, and it’ll be gone with that thing. The third law of Shiva Karma asks believers not to attach their happiness to earthly things.
4. Beyond happiness.
The world we’re living in is growing more self-obsessed. Everyone is worried about their happiness and doesn’t care if people around them are happy or not. However, real happiness is beyond limits, and it could be felt only when we have found the seed of knowledge within us, and we’re truthful with others and ourselves.
Remember, happiness comes from within, not outside.
5. Be formless.
If you may have noticed a happy person around you, you’ll see that the illusion does not control them. You put them in any situation at any place; they’ll be the same calm and content in their mind. So, the fifth and one of the most fundamental laws of Shiva Karma is practicing to be formless like water.
6. Using all your senses.
When our mind is at peace with heart, and we walk on the path of self-realization, all our senses come together to work in proper synchronization. When you achieve this state in your physical form, the feeling you get is incomparable.
7. Enlightenment is awakening.
With these laws of Shiva Karma, you achieve enlightenment. The highest form of existence for a human. In this state of mind, you attain self-realization along with the proper understanding of nature and reality.
Tonight is Maha Shivaratri, the night when Hindus celebrate the wedding of Shiva (the Great God) and Parvati (the goddess of power, energy, nourishment, harmony, love, beauty, devotion, and motherhood).
This night, Lord Shiva performs his divine dance, called the Tandava, the dance that is the source of the cycle of creation, preservation, and dissolution.
