Thursday Ask-A-Thon time for @ask-a-thon : How are you, how are things going and you say you can't stop thinking of Beela, so would you like to talk about that wip? What captures you the most? Characters? The plot?

Beela my beloved!

Beela has been a journey for me, honestly. I started writing it for Nanowrimo 2016 because "well, it won't be that hard now will it". I had a character--Beela, 22, introvert, ace--and a premise--go to other worlds to collect things--and it has since bloomed into something much bigger.

This turned out a lot longer than I was expecting, so I added a read more.

I finished the "book" 13 months later at 320k words exactly. Don't worry, it's getting split into three books, maybe four because the worldbuilding I did in 2016 leaves a lot to be desired.

For a long time I hated Beela-the-character because they were all of my negative traits turned up to 11. People loved them anyway and I was baffled. Turns out, Beela-the-character isn't irredeemable, they're just depressed and autistic like I was. The plot may be about going to different worlds, but they actually learn that it's okay to be sad and you can still have friends, which is what I desperately needed to know at the time.

My main group is Beela, still 22, still introverted, but found the courage in book two to come out as enby. They have the power to move people between worlds, a feat called blitzing. Nona is their best friend (though at the current re-write spot, she did just make a huge mistake), a sweet, bubbly girl. She can feel and manipulate emotion. Maisie...oh Maisie. Maisie is 6' of anger management problems and I love her so much. She definitely got suspended in school for starting fights and she's the only one of my humans who's actually going to college. Her power is strength; she can use magic to make herself very strong, usually when she's upset. Santo is a soft boy, the youngest but also the most knowledgeable about magic. Vadeen is my "tough guy". On Earth he's got a motorcycle and a wisecrack, but he's pretty out of his league now that they're not on Earth anymore. His power is catching on fire when he gets mad. Last is Ellis. Honestly, I kinda hate him because he represents every generic guy that my friends have ignored me for. He doesn't get a power, though he can still use magic.

I also have extensive...aus? It feels kinda weird to say I have an au of my own work, but I have a lot of stuff I've written out about them that's not related to the plot at all. I mean, like, 70k of Santo/Vadeen cute stuff, 15k of Santo/Vadeen having a terrible breakup, 25k of the group living together after the events of the story and even a few dozen words of Maisie getting a very sweet boyfriend named Dominic.

As for what captivates me, I'm going to go with characters. The plot is just an excuse to play with characters. I like to put my guys in a Situation(tm).

Kit & Emotions | Alexithymia Edition

Alexithymia, also called emotional blindness, is a neuropsychological phenomenon characterized by significant challenges in recognizing, expressing, and describing one's own emotions.

Cold. Distant. Unloving. Emotionless. The same words passed around by every foster parent she's ever had. Kit doesn't know why they say these things about her, she personally knows she's full of emotions. Too much and too many, in fact.

For her, emotions come as question marks in an already agitated mind. The difference between affection and sadness are hard to comprehend, simply the label of emotion and nothing else. And because these emotions are difficult to recognize, they are equally as difficult to convey or express, building up until there's simply TOO MUCH. And Kit does not do well with too much. Usually this results in meltdowns or even sometimes entire shutdowns because she is trying to manage all the emotions she is feeling and unable to manage.

In this same vein, Kit doesn't know how to feel upset or blame people, particularly people that hurt her. Not the way most people would. Don't take this as Kit does not recognize she was hurt - no she does. She knows when she's hurt and knows when she doesn't WANT to hurt. But she does struggles to comprehend being upset about hurting. It's difficult to rationalize that her emotions are geared towards the people hurting her and not simply internalized feelings.

No, not an odd question at all!! Don't worry anon, I love answering questions about them. More than life itself. Thank you so much, u have no idea how happy this makes me LMAO SO! Roo and Red are like, THE Roo ship. I went over this a little in the other ask I just answered, but basically, Roo only exists in underfell based universes. She doesn't exist in underswap, outertale, etc. but she does exist in swapfell, outerfell, etc. I'm thinking she originates from underfell. So her and Red are the original Roo x whoever ship. Theres some canon lore there n shit, but we're focusing on Roo and Red! Putting it simply: They're friends with benefits who are in love, and incredibly afraid of being in love, so they stay delusional and toxic instead :) Which is why I say 'stay toxic' so much in regards to their relationship. They're both emotionally scared, damaged people, who are in love but are afraid to express love out of the fear they might die. I don't think they're afraid that the other will kill them, but it's more just the fear and banishment of any emotional vulnerability in underfell. They don't want to get attached, and yet they are, so they're both in denial. To end this long ask, I'll say, I DO NOT CONDONE this behavior, it is not healthy and not to be romanticized. I've written their relationship this way, and other relationships this way, because it helps me work through my own issues caused by toxic, harmful, and traumatizing situations like this. Do you have any good law book recs? I find law suuuper interesting but it's kind of a hard genre to get into without like, knowing anything about it or already knowing someone.

the two books i'd recommend 100% are 'the rule of law' by tom bingham and 'eve was framed' by helena kennedy. 'the rule of law' talks about the importance of respecting the principles of the rule of law (e.g. a fair trial, habeas corpus, etc) and explores how (dangerously so) it's often been broken, while 'eve was framed' takes a look at different aspects of the UK legal system and the way women are treated within it. they're both a super good place to start if you're looking to get into law a bit more! i found both quite easy to follow and left them wanting to find out more about some of the things that i had read.

unfortunately most of the books i read are about UK law so both of those do focus on that D: but i still think they're a good place to start!

there are a few books on US law that are on my TBR list for now:

the color of law - richard rothstein

the new jim crow - michelle alexander

when abortion was a crime - leslie j. reagan

i also recently read 'pro: reclaiming abortion rights' by katha pollitt, which i wouldn't say is specifically about law but it was one of the books that helped me understand roe v wade + the US legislative system a little bit more (which. also. what the fuck america. are you okay) a lot of her analyses were very insightful and her points well made

if...if anyone wants i'd be happy to give recs for my fav non fiction books as i read them in the future 👉👈

So, I saw your post about Footclan!Mikey, now I have ideas. I'm going to be talking about the 12!turtles since I've been reading the comics and rewatching the series. For now, I'm just thinking about why they might join the clan, despite Splinter raising them. 1. Shredder makes Karai manipulate them because why not take more children from him?

2. Terrible decision to try and take out the clan from the inside out. Ends up terribly manipulated and tortured.

3. They manage to capture all of them, and (taking inspo from the comics) put them in virtual reality; basically redesigning their whole life to make Splinter the evilest guy and Shredder their savior.

4. Double mutated with that weird mutagen from the comics that made the mutants obey Shredder's voice. Ignoring the part where it allows them to turn back without retromutagen btw. They will look cool this time too.

5. Memory is wiped and Shredder finds them before Splinter. Decides to steal and lie to children.

So, how do you feel about the angst potential for each of these ideas?
