they found a girl at the beach
her words all washed away
still feeling waves against her legs
and whale skin at her touch
foam in her hair, salt in her veins
so
they tell her about the sea

Happy Birthday Eden Tobisa!
Turns out our favorite clock girly has her birthday on New Year's Eve! What a nice date for such a nice girl! Let's do a character analysis, fun facts, and songs!
Tumblr media
-We know relatively little about Eden's backstory. The most notable thing we know about her life before the killing game, apart from her fascination with clocks, is what is revealed in her chapter 2 secret: "Ever since you kissed her, you were afraid your sexuality would ruin your friendships." Which is pretty straightforward; she's canonically a lesbian and is worried it would negatively affect her friendships.
-Literally the only other thing we know about her backstory is that she lived in Japan for a small period of time when she was younger, before moving back to the US. This was revealed in a Q&A.
(... You know, I made a deranged theory in my Mai post that maybe the girl that Eden kissed was actually Mai. It wasn't very serious, since it was just a silly way to try to explain what the hell Eden's quote in the Mai page could mean. But... we know Teruko was in Japan for a while when she was younger, and it's theorized she knew Mai before being separated from her at some point. Combined with Mai's name being seemingly Japanese, it could imply Mai also lived in Japan at some point. And if that's the case, it's possible she met Eden there? To be clear, that's still an insane possibility, but I do find it a funny possibility, which is why I'm sharing it)
-Apart from that, Eden's defining trait is her optimism and her trust in others. She sticks to Teruko's side even after she starts pushing everyone away in CH 1, and confesses to her that she believes "not caring about others is the worst way to live." She's importantly not naive, she does know their situation is horrible, but still she constantly searches for an exit and tries to build good friendships with the others.
-This includes baking with Min, Rose and Teruko in CH1, inviting Teruko and Arei to make clocks on CH2, etc. Basically, she's awesome and nice and mature.
-Also she loves clocks. Regular Ultimate stuff, she can apparently spend hours and hours working and losing track of time.
-Although for such an optimistic character, her secret quote is quite ominous. "You can't go back, no matter how hard you try." We have zero clue what this means at the moment, but at least it does fit the symbolism of time always moving forward.
-Meanwhile, her quote in the Mai page is "She kept calling the number, even though no one picked it up." This is even more incomprehensible! Eden, what in the world are you talking about?
-Alright, David MV. She doesn't have a color in Color Theory, but her numeral is XII (twelve). Go to 1:48:28 in this video for an explanation. God it's so convenient to have that lol.
Alright fun facts!
-As stated, her birthday (December 31st) lands on New Year's Eve. Maybe representing new beginnings or change, which certainly goes well with her character. How nice!
-Like most of the cast, she's American and right-handed.
-She's one of the only characters with dyed hair. Her hair was originally just brown.
-Her favorite color is daffodil yellow, because it's happy, and her least favorite color is blue, because it's "kind of a downer color." Areden shippers in shambles.
-Her favorite ice cream flavor is honeycomb. I didn't even know that existed but go off queen.
-She enjoys cute fashion, but also enjoys wearing androgynous style clothing.
-She likes food which is fun to make or prepare. How nice!
-She's biracial; her mother is black and her father is Japanese. This is why she spent a bit of time in Japan when she was younger.
-Her name in kanji is 飛佐【とび ・ さ】楽【いーでん】. Gonna leave any actual meaning as homework, but it's worth noting her name was anglicized. I think that would translate to "Iden", but her mother liked the name "Eden", so they went with that instead.
Finally, songs that remind me of her!
-Positive Parade by DECO*27
-Gone Fishing by Ghost & Pals (friendship!)
-Aura by Ghost & Pals
-In Iolite by Ghost & Pals
-Magnet by minato
-Those Who Carried On by Ghost & Pals
-I'm Glad You're Evil Too by PinocchioP
And Happy Birthday! And a happy new year! Well wishes to all you Tumblr peeps. Take care!

i asked you something and you not only were mean, but you are also making fun of me on twitter. i felt so embarrased that i had to delete my account. you made me feel so bad. i did nothing to you. you had no reason to be so mean. english is not my first lenguage so i also have trouble communicating, i understand half of what you post here. karma will hit you so hard.
lets quote what i said “no i dont believe they are possible 🥰 which is why i have a whole page dedicated to manifesting stuff 😍”
this isnt mean, this is sarcasm. you communicate very well actually but heres the thing: i looked at ur account and you repost a lot of loa content. if you read all those posts especially the ones about desired appearance which is what you were asking about, it doesnt make sense for you to ask me “do you believe its actually possible to manifest a desired appearance.”
and do not use your language barrier as an excuse to make me feel bad because i rly dont. if you were so bad at communitcating, you wouldn’t be able to communicate to me both this time and the previous time, plus y would u read and repost loa content if u had an issue w language? i know you understand loa but when ppl keep searching and searching for outside answers and validation, it doesnt get them anywhere. believe me - ive “coached” ppl who repeatedly asked me the same questions over and over again despite my whole account and posts being right there. they still struggle because they only ask questions and never apply.
the same fingers you used to type the question, you could have used those same fingers to scroll thro my page like you did with the other content creators. i get it if you are new to loa (even tho you could have read the content that was already there and even tho u already reposted content answering ur own question) but as someone who creates loa content everyday, its disrespectful from my point of view that i work hard for these posts and ppl dont even look at it and instead ask the most limiting questions ever. its almost like “why would i waste my time w these posts”. if you dont understand this, its bc you arent someone who gets 20 repetitive asks everyday meanwhile their answers being right on my page. it can be stressful and so annoying.
now back to my original answer: “no i dont believe they are possible 🥰 which is why i have a whole page dedicated to manifesting stuff 😍”. if u think this was mean, its bc you knew the answer was yes, it is possible. why else would i have a page dedicated to manifesting if it wasnt possible to “actually manifest a desired appearance”. my answer simply guided you to your own answer and to search my page if you still had (better) questions. what i said was literally not mean😭 and if you still believe so then thats fine bc its never that big of a deal. and i wasnt making fun of u on twitter, i simply said the exact thing i originally answered you with💀
idk if ur a beginner in the law or not but either way, you should know that anything is possible w the law. if u didnt know that, then now you know (and ik you know based on ur reaction to my original answer). and karma isnt real so it will not “hit me hard”🥶
im sorry if you rly have a language barrier issue but from my pov, that was the best, most appropiate reply i could have given. even other loa content creators can agree bc they know how ppl can get in their asks inbox. reread this whole thing if theres still an issue.
and dw u can just make another account like you did just now🤭

I'm the anon who's been reading ur SWaK fic! Thank you for answering the qi deviation question. it's making me see mdzs in a whole new light. I recently saw a post (askSythe on here) about the significance of the blood pool and how throwing bodies in there removes them from the reincarnation cycle and that's what the clans did to the Wen Remnants and JC is rumored to have led this siege and my heart HURTS. continuing this in next ask -
Hey there anon 👋🏻
I'm glad you're enjoying my fic ☺️
As for the post you are referencing, I had not come across this until you mentioned it in your ask and have since went in search of it in order to reply. From what I can gather from the notes, it seems to have garnered a lot of controversy and subsequent backlash against the person who posted it originally.
I don't want to criticise other people's posts (especially when they have already received so much negativity from it), but with all due respect, I don't feel this was MXTXs intention with the blood pool. There's no mention of it in any version I have and I've also had my friend check the entire original novel for the phrase '永不超生', which is quoted in the original post, and we can't locate that in the Chinese text either. Regardless of that, I don't feel such a claim fits with the rest of the novel.
I could be completely wrong, as it's not something I've really thought about, nor do I have the cultural knowledge of the specific concept the original post is referring to. But, if the Wen remnants were forever barred from reincarnating due to their corpses being thrown into and essentially trapped in an apparent 'unbreakable prison' (which they managed to escape), why would WWX set an array around the blood pool to stop corpses escaping when he lived there back in his first life? 🤔 How were all the corpses able to crawl out and run amok the minute a rampaging WN broke the seal around the pool? It just doesn't make much sense to do that if the fierce corpses residing within are already trapped there.
There's also the fact WWX uses the blood pool as well. Which makes me question this theory even more so. It goes against WWX's character and ethics to stop souls from reincarnating, when his very cultivation method involves empathy and 'spending' resentment so the entities can move on. Granted, WWX used the blood pool to nurture corpses resentment so he was able to harness it and direct it where required - in this case, I think it's most likely to replenish those guarding the base of the burial mounds and keeping the Wen remnants safe. In theory, the corpses residing there would eventually use up their resentment and their souls would move on. Hence the need for a supply of new fierce corpses he can utilise - which he helps move on in turn. I really don't think WWX would do such a thing if the blood pool was anything other than a collection of water that held strong resentment due to being contaminated by the many corpses already present in its depths. If anything, it's a similar situation to when he found the sword in the Xuanwu of Slaughter's stomach, which had been practically marinating in all the resentment of the beast's past victims.
Obviously the Wen remnants were unable to move on after being mercilessly slaughtered, but that is simply because they were denied a proper burial and unjustly murdered in what was a most violent, unprovoked attack. Once the blood corpses had spent their lingering resentment, saving the very people who had killed them and the man who tried so hard to protect them, they finally moved on and turned to ash - which WN promptly collected to ensure they could finally be put to rest respectfully, as they should have been long ago. I see no indication that they would not move on because they were left in the blood pool specifically.
Of course, the way the cultivators involved in the siege not only murdered innocent people, but then treated their victims corpses with such disgusting disrespect is utterly appalling. Even though there is no evidence that the blood pool acted as a type of supernatural prison of sorts, it does not subtract from what the cultivators did. They still made sure the Wen remnants could not rest in peace by their heartless actions regardless.
As for JCs involvement in the siege, it's not actually a rumour that he led the siege, he most certainly, unequivocally did. It's actually outright stated a few times in the novel. Even when WN mentioned as such, WWX did not correct him on that specific accusation. Later still JGY also mentions JCs involvement, right in front of the man in question no less, with no argument to the contrary. Finally, MXTX has also spoken about JCs involvement in leading the siege and confirmed he had indeed formulated a plan based on WWX's weaknesses, as the text suggests. He was very much the driving force of the whole thing, despite knowing the Wen remnants consisted of innocent people who were either weak, old, or a toddler. He is responsible for many people being brutally murdered and shows no remorse for it either - which speaks volumes about his character.

instagram
It all started here. I woke up and looked at 'my' Discord server for the bloated tic of a fanfic (hey that rhymes, neurospicy two seconds!) I write with my partner SonaBeanSidhe, Aran Thranduil's Dining Hall. There hadn't been enough tea yet so the natural response was 'wth is this?' Well, THIS was going to Hoover my next two days and counting. Just visit the post, dear friends of the writing persuasion and you would see (I'll save you time because I'm nice this way) that there are many screenshots supporting just what the meme says: This Instagram OP knows a writer who found herself in a steaming pile of mess with the Google Docs TOS (which is really also the Google Drive TOS, making it somewhat difficult to locate said TOS. I'll save you more time. Here:
Tumblr media
This information comes from https://support.google.com/docs/answer/148505#zippy=%2Csexually-explicit-material So, it was the act of sharing the files, not having created or stored them that triggered what had happened. Okay, still not reassuring. In the meantime, I was concerned enough to post what had happened to r/FanFiction. Within minutes, my post had been frozen by the mods there. I can see their concern. I believe they had only seen the meme-like first screen of the Instagram post, and it does come off like a bad Snopes Fail. They asked me for more proof. The first thing I did was a search for previous instances of Google having frozen Drive accounts previously. They are limited, but they exist. The concern here had to do with the current lack of information as to why the action happened, and whether we who collectively authored and had shared Docs with explicit content were about to have our Drive accounts fall before the scythe of an overzealous AI rollout on the part of Google. Which led to the second part of this. My first response to the mods was as follows:
Tumblr media
A little while after I sent this, an update appeared on the Instagram OP's account (easy to find) so I added this:
Tumblr media
The salient point of the update was that the author had received restored access to her Drive, but NOT the Doc that had started the entire difficulty. I waited for a response. And waited, and waited. In the meantime, I had no means to add to, respond to, anything to my original post or defend myself against some fairly sharp initial criticisms leveled against me by individuals who clearly hadn't read anything beyond the initial meme. Special. While I understand a sub this large likely has a lot of messages to field, I also felt that given they managed to freeze my post in a matter of minutes, they were really taking their time responding. So I weighed in on Instagram with a message of support. If nothing else is taken away, please take this: Back up your files. It's easy to create an alt Google account; this other account will have its own Drive storage. Share your folders and files with yourself. If you don't already realize, in Docs under the File dropdown menu the third option is Make A Copy. If you have shared the original document 75 times, you won't have shared that copy at all. Consider backing up your works to Indie platforms like Get Hermit, Ellipsus and The Quill. There may be others. Your own external hard drive is also a very good idea. But wait, you ask. What about just using MS Word, or having copies as a PDF file in the Adobe cloud? Not so fast, my friend. Look at Microsoft and Adobe's TOS regarding sexually explicit content...you'll get an unpleasant surprise. I did. In the meantime, a third update came from the OP on Instagram shedding far more light as to what had likely gone wrong. She had shared the Doc with she guessed 18-20 people as beta readers. The belief is now that one of these persons actually turned her in to Google via their abuse form. To quote one of the commenters on that update: "I heard from an agent that Google will only do this to your account if someone reports it. Google isn’t scanning docs for explicit content (except maybe images), but yeah, for this to happen, someone had to report her document to Google." This felt like a relief...and yet is still packaged inside a cautionary tale. How many of us have shared by 'whoever has this link'? I have, or rather, I had. I revoked all such permissions to all large stories and folders in favor of my few trusted long-time friends and beta readers. The works are on AO3. I don't need those Docs links to be free floating all over the place, not after seeing what can happen. I was on vacation in England some years prior when I realized I had lost the ability to send out all outgoing Gmail. It took me several days to figure out what had gone wrong and nearly lost me my ability to receive Covid test results at a time when that was a travel necessity...almost disastrous. Fortunately I had multiple email accounts and could work around the problem. Which brings me to the last of this.
Tumblr media
While including the subreddit mod's responses here may seem retaliatory/petulant on my part...I'm at best miffed at their shortsightedness, maybe mildly insulted, mostly shaking my head at the fact that there is something to have been learned here that could have affected any one of us. No one was spreading misinformation. Something had indeed happened. The source of it had been unknown at the time of posting. Had they left my post alone I would have gladly redacted as it unfolded; the reason for placing it on that sub was not to create a giant stir but to let others know of the risk of this happening at all and to encourage backing up that which most writers invest a considerable amount of their emotional well-being; the safety of their written works. Yes, I'm neurodivergent. No, I don't always see the world as others do. No, I still don't think this difference allows the response to be interpreted as much other than a slight and working against the interests of authors (I'm on their side and last I checked, readers need the authors to have the things that are written in order to have the things to read. Just saying). Whatever, what really matters is, if you feel this is worth sharing, share, take away the important bits, and if someone out there just wants to write it up in 3 sentences so it isn't a tl;dr, do that too.
Have a Googly day, to all near and far, in these times in which we live...>.>

Leland, the Chessmaster (CPC wiki)
I make this post to make sense over Leland, the main antagonist of the CPC story that cleverly written by LambCat to not make us not aware how horrendous bad he is until the end of season 4 part 1 (the gala fiasco 'not so nice' plan) and cuz... Ughhh I am not that good at chess game so...
basically calling out @cpcwiki for maybe intake 'bout him
I want to expand his personality section on his page, we're lacking informations but I feel a simple sentence from wiki could be expanded more (feel free to reblog, gives reply etc about this post! That'll immensely helpful to anyone espc to me as wiki editor - the one that bad at chess as always lose on simple early rounds to my friend hahahah)
Personality
Leland is a mercurial figure. With his sons, especially his youngest, he is generally harsh and overbearing, although he seems to genuinely consider this as "training for the harsh realities of life". This behavior extends from the relatively innocuous habit of forcing his sons to perform push-ups at the merest hint of failure to implied murder[2]. Much of Leland’s actions and behavior, especially towards his wife and sons, are abusive. -> S4 part 2 makes us learns how abusive it's actually is, it's very subtle yet frighteningly so scary - it could happened to anyone IRL and the worse thing is the victims not notice until too late. In nutshell, the mother (Isolde) ripped from her own sons since baby so the Plaid Princes trained as "the royal way" (implied to groomed them up so each prince matching personality of each princess) - this makes the princes to never realizes what's actually a motherly love is in their childhood that makes each of the son believes that their lives solely depends on what's their father (the Plaid King) wants [Lance mentioned that at, ep 156 iirc?] and that's make them suffers in their own respective way: Blaine soughts to perfection as the eldest golden child that constantly on the edge and believes to should climbing to the 'top of the mountain'. Lance as the middle child believes that the only way he could do is supporting his team which is do what Leland wants. Frederick the youngest as the effect of his accumulation of 'misfortunes' (born small, can't do like what Leland wants designing him to be, etc) deemed as the black sheep/scapegoat of the family. That's totally messed up and I could gladly to explain more but we're in summary
Lance canonical quote, uhh ep 156 likely! This the nail of the coffin that Leland truly abusing his own family and Lance know about it - but until invasion arc kinda brushed it off
"He controls everything about us. And everything always goes his way" -> if that quote isn't scary, idk what else
Despite this attitude, he seems affectionate of them, and wishes to see them happy. He is noticeably more lenient in terms of restrictions than his best friend, King Jack of the Pastel Kingdom, with whom Leland has an apparently close bond. -> this make entire of very confusing and ambiguous relationships between Leland - and literally everyone espc Jack (his BFF, but messed up in the fandom as becomes a ship 'JaLand' hahaha). I won't talk about it more as it should go on the relationship descriptions, something that me as someone that not as emphatetic will have hard time to relate
+ my biggest question on this paragraph, what's and who "them" refer? The previous paragraph where just writes the very concerning sentence about 'he abuses his family'? WTF. Who kind of abuser that wants the victim to be 'happy' where they are literally the reason of the victims to be unhappy?
That paragraph need to change but for now I am not sure, maybe starts with clear reference of which 'them' refers to. I blame whoever that writes that first sentence but if one thing that I hate is to checking this page to search someone to blame, because at the end it doesn't matter. The current wiki only has 3 active editors and whoever originally writes it prob gone inactive (?) - and I am waiting for a certain episode to be free so I could tell certain plot point to flesh out his personality as that particular episode is the main crusher and enforcer about a popular fandom question "Does Leland thinks Leelathae | Lilyth and by extension Gwen, beautiful?"
Once that ep free maybe the personality part of him could be added in following suit. Also maybe adding characters to be relate to him, priority is the Pastel Queen cuz they're meet
and uh the current relationship description need to changes espc from his own quotes throughout his interactions
-> Laverne (help me, in words what it means?)
"Nothing's too decadent for my queens. After all, we're going to be the most prosperous kingdom in the world soon."
-> Maria and Lorena (help me, in words what it means?)
"So I'll offer you once more, princesses.... Leave your treacherous and insufferable father. Join me and my sons peacefully, and you have all the freedom, privileges, and power you could ever imagine. ...What do you say?"
"Fine, then you can rot in dungeons forever with your father after the wedding is done. "
-> the CPC, espc Whitney (the embodiment of abused victim)
"I think it's a compassionate solution. Any strong leader knows that a kingdom needs healthy, productive, citizens who can contribute safely to society. I mean, the people with curses hide themselves away because they know it too. They're of no value until they can be fixed." / the CPC
"Hm... I dunno, Blaine... I think he has a point. During dinner, I was keeping an eye on you boys. And while you were fumbling through your important gala speech and losing drinking games to school girls, Frederick stopped a rogue pet bird from crashing into a champagne glass tower by catching it one-handed. He saved the dinner. I was impressed. I think you might need to watch out for our little Frederick. He's on his way up." -> Whitney's that quickly follow up with the tiger/catboi realization that the whole ordeal is very similar with his family, the Monochrome
"This sort of reminds me of my own family before I left..."
/idk how to summarizes his personality in a words, but the hints there... Whoever in CPC BLR please help us at wiki
Tumblr media
Leland has a fondness for chess, a passion he shares with King Jack. -> this the original main reason I make this post
So uhh I am not remember the exact episodes, but he clearly loves chess as: at the amusement park arc he played with Jack while pastel-plaid kids go to the town, when Fred didn't come back in time and his brothers wondering about his whereabouts - in his hand he has chess-related book, and at the gala basically he has round of chess game which he wins with the move of - the serpent's gambit
Tumblr media
^ Leland explains his "Serpent's Gambit". The biggest foreshadowing imho that the Giant Serpent of Frederick's recurring dream is 99.99% likely to be Leland as his own father. The Plaid King that canonically at the episode 133 depict real people of his world as chess pieces by creepily crafting characteristics of them - the hair, the color motif, even the thread between Jack and the late Leelathae
Here more about the referenced move, Great Snake Variation as the one that likely refers to 'Serpent's Gambit' actually is
Tumblr media
^ this an image that I upload long ago but not sure to put where at wiki, and I just FORGOR although I keep analyzing and referencing it intensely on various cpc posts that I made
In nutshell, this panel shown that Leland consider the people of his plan (Blaine, Maria, Lance, Lorena, Frederick, Gwen, Jack, Leelathae | Lilyth) as his chess pieces. For his years grand plan [explanation after this] - and in that chess game, he forgot/not aware to consider important variables that wrecks his plan somehow: Isolde (his 'wife' and the Plaid queen), Jamie (Gwen's twin brother as the first genuine shipper of gwenderick), and the CPC as the entirety. The first two, Jamie and Isolde + Leopold unexpectedly became important reason for the major 'chess piece' Frederick to breaks free from his plan which to make Fred stucks at the hole 'until the Plaid troops come back to bringing the kidnapped Pastel Princesses'. The 'chess piece' that warns the role of supporter in the CPC story, the CPC itself as entirety to hurry saves the princesses of the Pastel Kingdom
more about interpretation of messed up chess pieces
All of the 'pawns' involved not aware that they are merely pawn pieces in his plan. The quote on that panel in my own retake honestly tragic. Leland with his fickleness of his heart's sky not truly understand what love, what true love is actually... He thoughts that love is simply meeting someone on the opposite gender (if his HC being repressed gay is the truth, so he try to make heterosexual pairings as WARNING FOR MINOR FP EP 162 SPOILER When Jack happy for the incoming playdates of their future 'daughters', Leland instantly tells that he will get lots of sons) of three princes as his sons bethroted to marry Jack's daughters of the rule of three (somehow - that likely making the plaid-pastel pairings has bonding interest, the oldest is music-the middle is army and sports- the youngest books) fall in love and 'live happily ever after' but like Prez said, no one can't define what's own happiness is except oneself... Prez is happy to be aroace, Gwen is happy to could be with Frederick romantically - and that's totally valid source of happiness.. no one can't say otherwise, not even themself
"It's easy to forget once we step outside this forest, but we each define our own standards. And for me, I don't want to be a good princess and settle down with anyone. I never have...!!" -> that's my own interpretation of Prez quote, she's canonically aroace but know that the standard - of happiness.. it's defined by oneself
A character to me depicted by themself (espc from their actions and inner thoughts) and by others (as relationships to anyone they're interact, their family - friends - collagues etc). And Leland is truly a very complex character to cipher, to put his description on the wiki. I am afraid as I might be too subjective if writing about him... and I think I desperately need another's opinion + this an OPEN CHALLENGE to delegate the impossible wiki works, with writing about Leland from the canon hints that I spread on. Just rereading the CPC guys, you become horrified when knowing the context of Leland's abuse that actually clear since ep 16!

The Researcher Archetype (145) - Part1
It's been a long time since I've been studying the Enneagram and its tritypes. But I find few references about the variations of certain tritypes, particularly the "The Researcher" type. Some of the references I find are on the Personality Database Wiki and Personality Cafe, as well as Katherine Fauvre's official website. I'll break it down into parts to make it more accessible. If you can share your experience through this post or by tagging me, I would be delighted.
■■■
"Tritype® 145, 154, 415, 451, 514, 541-The Researcher If you are a 145, you are diligent, intuitive, and knowledgeable. You want to be ethical, original, and wise. Highly intellectual, you are focused on what you perceive is correct and above reproach. Motivated to be informed, you are research-oriented. You seek and quote the opinions of experts to avoid being uncertain and seen as ignorant. You like to learn and will deeply study whatever captures your interest."
-Katerine Fauvre
________
[Personality Database Wiki]:
1+4: The Humanist
Double frustration.
Enhances the natural line of connection to ONE and FOUR.
Pairing that is the most focused on refining their ideals, pursuing higher standards.
Whatever the instinctual stacking or the head type, there is a strong push toward what is considered tasteful, decent and grotesque, vulgar.
Want to bring its intuition and imagination front and center but with certain standards and guidelines.
This is a very persnickety and particular pairing that needs to do things a certain way, even when it isn’t practical.
Subtle (or not so subtle) disdain for what is considered subpar, plain, normal or mediocre.
They are often hard to truly please and are even very critical of themselves.
Conflictual relationship with their emotions: refrain from feeling, then let go.
Wants to experience life in all its depth and glory, but the ONE fix wants to keep that within certain rules and boundaries of decency.
May cultivate spiritual and/or religious outlook on life.
Can bring out new standards of excellence, unparalleled visions of beauty.
Can be attached to certain aspects of art and/or culture.
Often quite philosophical and adamant about setting certain standards.
In very low levels of health may run the risk of emotional and mental exhaustion by restricting themselves from continuously harsh standards.
May unintendedly castrate their own emotional experience by repeated superego blockage.
Invertedly, may also sabotage their ability to think critically and rationally with their emotional tidal waves.
The 4 fix helps the core 1 to experience life through a more intuitive and spiritual way so to search for meaning.
The 1 fix helps the core 4 to bring structure and order in its emotional musings and bring out its internal desires to fruition.
1+5: The Rational
Double competency.
Pairing that is the most focused on accuracy and scientific methods of reasoning.
Most cerebral combination.
Usually display tastes for intellectual pursuits and a deep hunger for knowledge.
Not easily satisfied with the superficial answers; knows what and how to search for them.
Usually very focused mind that can home in on what to extract from books and sources of information.
Can give extremely detailed and structured information about a subject that they have studied.
Probably one of the most aloof and emotionally distant pairing there is. A TWO wing or fix can help alleviate that tendency.
Very curious mind. They want to know everything that something or someone has to offer.
There is always an effort to be exhaustive and precise in their speech while avoiding rambling if possible.
Pairing that is the most uncomfortable with superficial chat and can be awkward in social situations.
It’s hard for them to let go of the formalities and be more open-minded for one.
They can be stuck with their way of thinking and not welcome new situations because of this.

Hi! May I share your thread on TikTok? The one on how Israel isn't egalitarian in its "safe haven" for Jewish folk. It was so well written and informed. I wanted to make a similar video about how it indirectly Stokes antisemitism, but it'd would be better to highlight Jewish voices as I'm a black muslim
Feel free to if you want but to be absolutely clear that I myself am not Jewish. I just made that post to share some oft he things I've learned in response recent tide of zionist propaganda that's been all over the western media.
If your interested in a Jewish perspective then many Jewish tumblr users have made a lot of very good posts and additions that covers a lot of similar matters. Just of the top of my head there's lesbianchemicalplant (with posts like this, this and this ) and determinate-negation (i.e. this one and this one ) There's many others of course but between tumblr's awful search function and my own inconsistent tagging habits its hard to keep track of what I've read and no doubt there's many that I just haven't seen
Several of the articles I linked are also written by Jewish people or centered on a Jewish Perspective. This theme is likely most prominent in this article, which is focuses on an interview with the scholar Benjamin Balthaser about Jewish Leftist anti-Zionism in the 20s and 30s
Also looking back on that thread and its responses I've realised a number of errors, or at least points where I employed poorly chosen language. I've conflated the Shepardic and Ashkenazis Old Yishuv in ways that I don't think are helpful; as the term is one coined by Zionist settlers to describe the various Jewish people already present in Palestine at the start of the settlement process and thus includes a number of different groups with differing histories and relationships to the land. I also used the term "indigenous" to describe them. This was in an attempt to outline how Jewish presence in Palestine isn't synonymous with Zionism (i.e. the creation of an ethno-state supposedly for all Jewish peoples everywhere) but it also had the effect of implying that they are exempt from participation n the Zionist colonial project which thy are very much not. My point was that there have been Jewish people in Palestine far before the era of Zionist colonialism but in the political sense referring to them as "indigenous", especially in implied reference to the contemporary political situation, was a poor use of the word . Additionally, while my readings on the early development of modern vernacular Hebrew reminded me very much of self-indigenization in terms of how it often evoked an ancestral connection to the ancient Kingdom of Israel (thinking of quotes from Eleizer Ben-Yehuda like "The Hebrew language can live only if we revive the nation and return it to the fatherland" ) it has been pointed out that this was very likely not the primary intention considering that Zionism originated at the very height of European settler-colonialism when such downplaying rhetoric wasn't really necessary. The (frequently forced) use of Hebrew as the spoken language likely had had far more to do with creating a new common culture and stripping Jewish migrants of their own so they could be more easily integrated into the state. While it seems to me that appeals to an ancestral land connection still featured far more in even early Zionism that in any other strain of European Settler-Colonialism (which indeed often made the "newness" of the conquered land a rhetorical point of pride, disregarding indigenous claims to the land without insisting that the settlers had any more rights than was granted with their force and diligence), I suppose that the term "self-indigenisation" may not be the most appropriate in this context and would be best restricted to the more modern faux-progressive forms of Zionist apologia. I'm sure there are many other mistakes I've made in that post or things I've overlooked, but these currently appear to me to be the most important once. Overall I'm honoured that you'd consider my writing worthy of such attention but would urge caution and insist that you seek out other sources in addition to it. Thank you for your time and good luck with the video

Hi, sorry for troubling you. Actually I need some advice. If you think I’m too much of a nuisance please ignore me. I don't know other country’s history (not that I know much about mine). A few weeks ago I came across a post that the writer had used some historical terms to justify a character’s behavior. It had nearly 100 likes and seemed legit and persuasive like she was very knowledgeable but it sounded off to me. Those were just eliminable comic relief scenes and the character was caricaturistic. A human with a healthy mental state, average IQ, and a little sense of social grace wouldn’t act like that. The writer’s tone was hostile, too and she turned an accuracy question into a moral one. She liked that character so much that didn't even try to hide her anger. Even though the asker was anon she implied that she/he is a sucker for pretty boys and a misogynist. How would she know? I was convinced that something was off and with no hope of getting an answer, I emailed a history website and ask them if she was right, the reply was really surprising. Not just the character and those scenes but many other things are imaginary and her interpretations of those terms and conclusions are false. They told me that even the literature from that era can’t be trusted or used as reliable sources because it’s the nature of fiction to be fanciful and misleading. I sent the email to her adding nothing, assuming she’d feel guilty for implanting false knowledge in fans, but she said she had no time for haters. I don’t know anybody on Tumblr or that fandom, and no one would believe an outsider. They are already satisfied with the lies. If one cares about the truth, one searches for it. Even so, is there anything I should do? Do I have any obligation to do anything? Thank you.
Hey Anon! You are not a nuisance at all :)) although, to be honest, it's hard to give advice when I'm not fully aware of the situation you're asking about.
From my understanding, you disagree with how a blogger justified a character's behavior in a work of fiction, which was done by quoting wrong historical facts, therefore providing false information to other fans, and you're wondering how to rectify it? I hope I understood properly?
To start with, I'm sorry to say that this happens very often in fandoms across the internet.
Browsing through the internet, you will always find people who do not share similar views about characters, theories, world building, romance, authors' inspirations, etc leading to a huge gap amongst fans, depending on who agrees on what.
The reason why that exists is because people aren't always neutral when reading, therefore their opinions and expectations can color the story they read in a certain way, leading to some misconception and bias.
This literally happened in every fandom I know, so the first thing I would advise is to keep in mind that, even with good arguments, you cannot always change the mind of everyone you disagree with, because everyone reads/watches a story through a personal lens.
In other words, pick your battles: what do you accept to disagree on and what do you think is unacceptable misconception? That's for you to decide and to act on, knowing that even with good and reasonable arguments, some people just won't take your side.
Speaking of which, as a second advice: you strongly disagree with the original poster and you really don't want to let it go? Well, act on it !
Friendly reminder that, from the moment you're acquainted with a series and you enjoy it, then you already belong in its fandom. Who cares if you just joined Tumblr or if you just discovered this series? You're as much a fan as anyone else and you have a right to your opinions, just like anyone else.
So, what to do? Open the debate by reblogging the post and explain to the original poster why you disagree with her, by detailing your arguments.
Nowadays, not a lot of people comment or reblog posts anymore to offer additional thoughts: they'd rather hide behind anon mode but anonymity doesn't always allow for an open debate, on the contrary!
Myself as a blogger who receives some anon asks, I can guarantee you that I'm always nicer and more open to discussion if someone comes to me off anon, especially if it's to disagree with something I said. Because I put a blog's name on an idea and it brings a lot more humanity in the discussion. :)
Additionally, some people also think that disagreeing means being disrespectful, but that's not the case at all. You can always peacefully and kindly explain to someone why you disagree with them.
So gear up and be brave ! You disagree and it's important to you to explain why? Well, state your opinion high and loud with your blog's name, like a proud of fan of whatever series or character this is about. And again, even if you don't change their mind, that's okay, at least you stated what you had to say and that's what matters.
Lastly though, a word of caution.
To quote you : "The writer’s tone was hostile, too and she turned an accuracy question into a moral one. She liked that character so much that didn't even try to hide her anger. Even though the asker was anon she implied that she/he is a sucker for pretty boys and a misogynist. How would she know?"
As I was saying above, I think unfortunately anonymity in asks is used way too often and bloggers are from time to time fed up with getting asks or opinions without a name to address directly.
Additionally, a lot of asks are sent without necessarily taking the time beforehand to check whether or not the blogger was open to discussion on different subjects in the first place. Hence the hostile tone in answers from time to time.
Take my blog as an example: after ten years on this site, there are certain subjects that I either won't ever want to discuss or some opinions on some characters that I'm beyond fed up with. So anyone barging into my askbox as an anon on either aspects will end up deleted or blocked or maybe answered with a rather hostile tone, because I already stated my opinion ten, twenty or thirty times.
Sure it's not very nice and it doesn't please me to answer this way if I even answer, but I believe, as far as I'm concerned, that it's stated very plainly and often, enough so that people would know if they bothered to check for a second before sending an ask.
So I understand that the hostile tone and the misogyny allegations that you're describing aren't pleasing, but be sure to check why the hostility exists in the first place: is it really that the original poster is narrow-minded and can't be reasoned with ? Or is it that they are often faced with anons who don't bother acknowledging what she said in the past before asking ? Because that will definitely factor into how open-minded the original poster will be if you go for a debate.
TL;DR You can always disagree and discuss why with anyone in any fandom. However, choose your fights and, mostly, choose your weapons well:
state your opinions with your blog's name, in a reblog or in a comment, and definitely not as an anon, if you want to be taken as seriously as possible
always check beforehand about the blogger you want to debate with, so that you can understand who you're talking to a little bit better
be respectful as you disagree and all will go well
I hope it helps? Sorry if not. Have a good day Anon! ^3^

Fr. Mullady claims “All things being equal, marriage is oriented to family and so to children. It would be wrong to postpone having children indefinitely or to limit oneself to one or two.” What exactly is he saying here? I was an only child. NFP does allow for negotiation on the amount of children. If there are good enough reasons to not have any more (physical/mental health, finances, etc), if I understand correctly it is allowed, yes (Humanae Vitae)? There are also couples who legitimately don’t .. have relations.. for years, and this isn’t inherently wrong if for a good purpose (1 Cor 7 “do not deprive each other except by mutual consent and for a time”, also Josephite marriages, old age/reproductive instinct lessens, health reasons, etc). I’m pretty sure this isn’t “women are sinning unless they’re continuously pumping out babies” but I’m sure this isn’t “married couples can live extravagantly and spend all their time on lavish useless things and can have children but choose not to”. Most things Catholicism teach seem.. very nuanced. Far too nuanced for modern secular ears.
This is one of those times when I think that maybe it’s not a good idea to just post quotes from a book because it can be taken out of context. I’ve put the link source along with the quotes for anyone interested in the whole book. (I know some people object to buy from Amazon but considering how big of a company it is, I don’t think a handful of people refusing to buy their products will make a dent to their fortune. I think the best thing we can do is pray for the workers.)
But I guess the good thing that can come out of this is it can at least start a discussion to search for the truth.
Fr. Mullady talks about marriage and family at length spanning in several pages and it’s in light of the indissoluble union of the husband and wife after the consummation of their marriage that he condemns birth control. It’s hard for modern secular ears to understand that when a Catholic Church say “no” to something, it’s actually saying “yes” to something much bigger.
Here’s the quote the with more context:
“The practice of natural family planning must be based on the good of the other person and cannot be done for a trivial motive or when circumstances do not warrant it. All things being equal, marriage is oriented to family and so to children. It would be wrong to postpone having children indefinitely or to limit oneself to one or two. This requires one to respect the order of nature and the possibility of parenthood found in the act. The moral aspect of natural family planning demands that it be done from love for the other and as an act of the virtue of chastity. It is not just another method of birth control. Continence and chastity are not ends in themselves but are rooted in the affirmation of the person of the other which in turn is based on the presence of the spiritual soul. Because the person is a spirit, no person may be reduced to an object of use but every person must be a subject of love.
In the practice of chastity in the sexual relationship, man rediscovers the original innocence in which the body was a means to express the gift of love in the soul. To submit this experience to the order of providence is to respect the hierarchy of values wherein lower things find their perfection in higher and deeper things, matter finds its perfection in spirit. This is because reason permeates the otherwise biological actions of man.”
The part when he said, “All things being equal,” is important to keep in mind. He points out in other pages that there can be serious reasons why a couple can’t have a kid. As far as I know the Catholic Church teaches that NFP is allowed to preserve the health of the mother and/or financial reasons such as not being able to afford to have another child. I actually knew someone who had health complications with her last kid (I believe it was her 4th) and because of that she and her husband has decided that they’re done actively trying but they will still welcome any child that God will give them should a child result from them practicing NFP. But what Fr. Mullady is objecting here is a couple deliberately refuses to have another child without grave reasons. Not wanting to raise another kid because they want to indulge in a more lavish lifestyle is not a grave reason.
It’s important to remember that just because a couple only has one kid or don’t have any children doesn’t automatically mean they’ve been using birth control. It could be that God only planned for that couple to only have one kid (like St. Ann and St. Joachim) or they have a fertility issue that they didn’t cause themselves.
I honestly encourage everyone to read the book to see the full picture of what the Catholic Church teaches about marriage and family. Me posting the quotes is just my way of trying to pique your interests.

@jushiro-ukitake replied to your post “Could you review the locked tomb books by tamysn muir? I’m interested in your thoughts on it! It’s one of my favorite series...”
Wow frank! I’ve read all three books but I don’t remember the character named Floornight! My favorite characters are Gideon and Harrowhark. I also love Cam and Pal! I thought the books were about necromancy and space :o
It's the third one, by the way -- the first one's The Bloody Chamber, and the second one's Daughter of Smoke and Bone. Those are the main novels of the series, and the others take place in the same world, in a sort of "aftermath" of them. The plot of the first one is very involved and I don't recommend it without at least some prior knowledge of the world.
Here's what the first one is about:
In a world where magic is real, a baby is conceived which is half-human and half-monster. In a world where monsters and vampires and other monsters are real, the world has become overrun with them.
What is the nature of the "monster" which will be responsible for ending the "monster apocalypse?" Is this creature as monstrous as the things which it destroys?
And here are some more quotes, from a couple books further down in the series:
MARTIN:
You did not expect me.
The others, Harrow and Gideon, turned towards the new voice, and in their shock and confusion I saw a dozen different looks flit over their faces. Martin is new enough to his role that I could not see much of him, at this stage. I have, of course, become accustomed to the various looks of the others, and I expected these various reactions to be fairly simple, though complex in Harrow's case, to deal with, and they were not. Harrow did not expect the others to call upon my name, but she was too confused to see anything but "the new voice" before it, and after she became aware of what she saw of the others, she did not obey the new voice, because she could not see the new voice, until Martin was speaking to her and his name was called upon, and even then it was not followed, so confused was she by the number of looks I saw flash over Harrowhark's face as the others turned towards their "expectation" of Martin, of the "newborn human" who is half-human, half-monster. A look of fear in Harrow's face I could almost swear to, as Gideon and Harrow, both in shock, turned towards us, and even before I saw that look in Harrow's eyes, I knew it was the beginning of the end for Harrow, for the world, for humanity -- it was only the beginning for Gideon.
And the first sentence here, from the original novel:
"There are monsters out there in the world."
There is a man and a woman and a baby in a house, and an entire continent and a set of strange, distant people beyond the horizon, of whom they know nothing, and it is winter. There is a fire in the kitchen, which might or might not have burned the whole house, and the world is in flame.
It is the year we start our story, the year in which Gideon and her family left the College on the Plain, to search for Harrow the Saint, for Harrow the bloody rose, who could make or break the world.
Now, for my reasons for liking this book so much:
This book is about the nature of the "monster" who will end the "monster apocalypse"; and by various means, it shows us that "monster."
This book is very weird, at times, I think because of its focus on a sort of "science" which I, personally, tend to have a hard time with -- and, if I am being honest with myself, I probably wouldn't have read the book were it not for my own experiences with science (I think, the last one of many in a long line of novels about that "science" school I hated in high school, etc).
But it's not like it's about science. It's not as if "it is about science in much the same way we could see science as being about the last 400 years of the Western intellectual tradition."
The book is not written by someone who is like us. It's not written by someone who has that much "weird outsider" baggage (as I mentioned, I know a number of such people).
It is written by someone who participated in the scientific revolution in large, complex ways. Some of the "weird outsiders" whose views are described in this book were, for instance, "weird outsiders" because they were in fact "un-woke" at the time of writing. They had never been in contact with the "olden world" of inspiration, of the story itself. The book's authors were "well-rounded" people.
The book presents itself as "about" "science" because it seems to present itself to readers as being about science.
The character named "Floorlight" in the book is named after a person who participated in this "science" movement in "great detail." Indeed, you could argue that she is in some sense responsible for the way the world appears to work.
Here are some quotes about this book from fans:
What was the final straw that finally made me say that I could never be a scientist, and I've always hated the idea of science? Well, for one thing, Floornight was the thing that finally made me admit that I could never be a scientist. And I've always hated the idea of science itself, because it always seemed to me the dream of mankind to try to discover what was out there, to see the world's logic, and to have some way to control it, even if only in imagination and never really in the real sense that we have today. [...]
Of course, I can see why people would relate to it; as I've said before, it feels very abstract, almost like a science fiction setting, which is in some sense about science. [...]
[...]
Of course there are lots of reasons why people like it, and a lot of the reasons are to do with it being like this book. It's the story of what's out there, in the way of things, a sort of monster. That's all, in the way of a monster. Not a good or good one, just a monster.
I'd say the main theme of these books is some sort of idea about "science," and about "human" beings, who try to "ground" reality and their "logics" in various ways, like "saying it" or "making" things. It's a theme that the books themselves play with, that seems kind of "synthesized" by them in the way their protagonist, Harrow, is. (See below.)
The very universe, it seems, has been created, in ways that scientists could not
comprehend, and now it is overrun by "monsters" and other
"creatures" that science "could not comprehend." I can understand
why people writing from this perspective would write a book about
What is the nature of the "monster"
which will be responsible for ending
the "monster" apocalypse?"
[…]
The books are sort of a "sort of" fanfic of each other (each book being told in the "voice" of the others), sort of with some sort of overall plot connecting them, a bit like "The Bloody Chamber." But I'm definitely "into" the kind of books this isn't about, and a lot of what's written about it (that sort of story) seems like it comes from this kind of material.
Harrowhark (by the way) has a "nest of six vampire half-breed vampires" living in the house that they call "Daughter," whose mother, Camazelia, is "the worst of them.
It is the beginning of the end of the world as we know it. A young man named Martin was conceived half-human and half-monster, and all the monsters of the world were in the streets.
For one night I saw the first few pages of this story, and immediately thought, "Oh, yeah."

Starter Resource Post
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Why yes I do,
While I do have books that I own, I'm not super sure I would endorse some of them over online resources. Single authors (admittedly like myself!) can know certain types better than other types, and some of them have biases for and against certain types. Also, there's a surprising amount of religious content that leaks into the older published books, as apparently this is very popular among part of the Christian crowd. This wouldn’t be an issue if it didn’t seep into the advice portion for the types- a lot of profiles ending in “Seek Jesus” and stuff. Basically most of the best info I’ve found so far has been online.
If you must have something solid in your hands this book is good as a starter (although it’s got the spirituality angle—just look at the bird on the cover), and this will give you an extended relationship matrix. However, your milage will vary and I’m not sure I would endorse the price tag. It’s been a while since I touched books because they can be so hit-or-miss.
Because good resources keep popping up online, there’s actually more than I originally had as reference when I started out. Some of the best things I’ve come across have actually been one-off google searches that landed me on some old-ass webpages, but hunting them down without the specific thing I was searching for at the time is a whole other thing. Embrace the second and even third pages of google, this is a real treasure-hunt of a topic and information is scattered around.
I must link ol’ faithful because it’s got content that’s mostly right for most things. For more specific information (like counterphobia) I will admit that’s been something that I’ve gathered in one-off posts and random snips, like content on this forum and the reddit.
Recently I’ve been using this website to find the line between the wings. It’s a bit hard to find the wing section but they’ve got good content (when it's not behind a paywall.)
Sometimes the growth point is called the Soul Child, which kind of makes me wince but this is a good compilation of how people sometimes experience their growth point in their history.
This website has a good collection of quotes from various books and sources which make for a good overview.
And as I’ve said before, please ignore the celebrity section for whatever reason these websites tend to get them so, so wrong.
The enneagram is kind of a death by a thousand 101’s, reading the same thing over and over again and watching for the details. It also requires a bit of discernment to pick the good info from the bad, but you’ll have to rely on your intuition a bit more for that.
The up side is, literally the entire world becomes a lesson in how the types can function once you know what you’re looking at. I’ve picked up quirks over time by being in a bit of a feedback loop—I notice that someone is a certain type, and then I watch how they do things. After a while you pick up on the nuances of how certain behaviors show up in their life, and you can have a slightly easier time with the next person.

Chugga’s Lost Innocence
Also called/Sub-memes: Do Daisy on Hard, Chuggaa Wood, Emile x Daisy, Daisy’s heart-shaped box
Channel of origin: The Runaway Guys (technically ProtonJon’s Twitch)
Explain the joke: During TRG’s first livestream on ProtonJon’s Twitch channel, the group played a game of Mario Party 6 on the board Faire Square. Since there was no guest to be player 4, they had to pick their AI opponent and difficulty, with Jon suggesting Daisy. When asking what difficulty to set Daisy to, Emile very awkwardly worded his question “Should we do Daisy on hard?” a wording choice that Jon had to repeat twice in disbelief, and chat called him out on.
During an early minigame in which players are searching for underwater treasure chests, Emile again used questionable word choice as he stated “And I get… wood” as he found a wooden treasure chest. While Jon missed the quote at the time, chat certainly didn’t. Emile soon made it worse by pointing out that it was almost morning, making it into a “morning wood” joke, and a comment in chat made a connection to the earlier quote, saying “Well now you’re ready to do Daisy on hard.”
Later, the 1-vs-3 minigame Crate and Peril came up with Daisy as the single player, holding and tilting a box that the other three players have to run around inside, avoiding obstacles. Deciding to have fun with the joke ship/running gag, Emile declared “I am inside Daisy’s heart-shaped box.” He knew it was a song reference, and just assumed it was referring to a heart-shaped Valentines chocolate box, and Jon had to spell it out for him, stating “It means vagina!”
Soon after the stream, Lucahjin visited with TRG to record the Littlebigplanet 2 LP and refused to let Emile live down his Daisy comments, especially as she played as Daisy in Fortune street, pointing out anything Emile said that could be turned into innuendo and telling him to read the book she got him (which I plan on making a separate post for). When TRG started their LP of Mario Party 5, Emile had hinted that he’d be playing as Toad since Donkey Kong was no longer a playable character. However, due to the infamous stream, Emile decided to play as Daisy instead, saying goodbye to his sanity as he picked her.

👪 FAMILY - what is their family like? what is your ocs relationship to them? does your oc have any siblings?
Matti has quite a big family. Roggenwolves like to settle in packs, so in addition to his parents and his two older brothers, he grew up with two more aunts and uncles, as well as his cousins. Matti is very fond of his family, but he feels like there is more to the world than the traditional, isolated life they all seem content to keep living. Matti fully intends to return home and settle down to live on the land and farm it with his brothers someday, but he wants to see a bit more of the world first.
Jim has a strained relationship with his family, because of their obsession with his kidnapping when he was five. His parents are smothering and overprotective, and his younger brother has never really gotten along with him, always living in the shadow of his big brother's harrowing childhood experience. Jim wishes he got along better with his brother, but it's hard for him to get past the way his family obsesses over his case.
Lina's family is big, even if she doesn't see them all the time. She grew up traveling with her father and her older cousin, who was like a brother to her, and whoever of the family chose to move with them. After her cousin married and her father got too old to work as a contractor on construction crews, Lina got a job as a freelance reporter to continue the life she'd been used to. She stays in touch with a lot of her extended Roma family, and whenever their paths cross, she enjoys staying with them and catching up on their lives.
Will feels trapped in his family. His father, and to a lesser extent his brother, blame him for his mother's death, and he feels like they would rather have had her back than have him. He mostly tries to be as useful as he can and stay out of their way so he doesn't become even more of a problem than they already consider him.

The Mother // Spoiler-free Review
Tumblr media
This one took me a long time to read. Not because it was difficult or dense, I just have a hard time picking it up back again if I pause my readings for whatever reason.
But hey, I finished it in the first week of the year! The score...? I LOVED IT!
I have this habit of going through my parents’ attic once in a while and I always manage to find more books that interest me. This time, I found a very old version of Mother, gifted to my late grandfather back in 1971 (though the book itself was probably published around the 50s). It’s really fun to go through their shelves, because I’m able to find so many socialist authors.
It’s been a day since I’ve finished it, and I still feel kind of empty inside. It was such a good read.
Mother is a tale of Pelageya, a mother of a revolutionary, and how her worries for her son turned into love for all Humanity.
I’ve always loved Russian literature, but I had only read the big classics mostly before the Russian Revolution. It’s really interesting to see how Gorky approaches the miserable living conditions people had in Tsar times after the first attempt of the Russian Revolution and the struggle for the truth and justice.
In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever heard someone talk about Gorky around me or any post-revolution Soviet (or Russian, after the USSR’ end) work. It’s sad, the way you have to really search for them to even find something. I’ve never regretted reading them. Even Tolstoy’ Anna Karénina, which I didn’t love: I still managed to take something from it and enjoy a good story.
That said, I didn’t know what I was getting into. I only knew the author lived during the early years of the USSR and this was one of his works. Nothing more, nothing less.
This might become one of my favorites. Even if the ending destroyed me from the inside, it also filled my heart with a never-extinguishing love and passion for my way of praxis. For me, that is translating works I find important for other people to read/watch; this book managed to make me feel more accepted for not being able to do “more” than my local communist youth. Crazy.
Writing
For reference, I’m reading the Portuguese translation, not the Russian original nor the English translation (I did look for the English quotes in the review).
The writing is simple but burning with passion. It makes sense, since the focus here isn’t a noble or aristocratic family, but the working class as a whole.
The day was swallowed up by the factory; the machine sucked out of men’s muscles as much vigor as it needed. The day was blotted out from life, not a trace of it left. Man made another imperceptible step toward his grave; but he saw close before him the delights of rest, the joys of the odorous tavern, and he was satisfied.
While the description of the senses isn’t anything praise-worthy, the prose is. I teared up at times from the inner thoughts of Pelageya or the dialogue between comrades.
”Why, this is like a new god that’s born to us, the people. Everything for all; all for everything; the whole of life in one, and the whole of life for everyone, and everyone for the whole of life! Thus I understand all of you; it is for this that you are on this earth, I see. You are in truth comrades all, kinsmen all, for you are all children of one mother, of truth. Truth has brought you forth; and by her power you live!”
Plot
First things first: this is a semi-biographical work. If you can’t stand literary fiction or any work without the typical “beginning-middle-end” structure, you might not like this.
This is mostly a walk through Pelageya’s approach to life through her son Pavel, who becomes a revolutionary against the Tsarist power. It also deals with things which surprised me for the times this was written in—the 1900s—like domestic violence, how (Christian) faith interacts with socialism, and how comradery can make one be truly reborn.
The entire book is very heart-warming and full of love for people, so the ending got me by surprise. I had almost forgotten this was Russian literature. While its original purpose was to get people to recover from the defeatist mood they were in after the failure of the first attempt at a Russian revolution, I’m not sure I’d recommend this to absolutely anyone. If you need a light in your life, this is a 50/50 read. Overall though, I’d give it a shot. If you can take a medium-paced story without much super exciting happening, it’s a great read.
Characters
While I talked a lot about Pelageya’s character growth in the Plot section (since she is the true protagonist), The Mother has a vast cast, and many great characters.
The main characters here are obviously Pelageya, but also her son Pavel. We also have other characters, like the anarchist Rybin, the Ukrainian Andrey Nakhodka, and Anna, a revolutionary girl.
How we come to know these characters is mostly through dialogue and Pelageya’s perception of them. It’s really endearing how being a “mother” begins to change and morph into a more universal meaning—that being her motherly love and care for all her comrades.
While I enjoyed the cast as a whole, I will have to say that for the exception of Pelageya, all of them felt very one-dimensional and I didn’t feel any growth or change. It’s not too bad, considering the focus is almost always on Pelageya’s growth, but once you finish the book, it makes you think about those little factors.
Maybe I just enjoyed Pelageya so much because I too am a motherly person towards the people I care for and would probably be like her if I ever become a parent. Plus, the “found family” fits perfectly in here.
Worldbuilding
This book is set in our world—Sormovo, Russia. However, if it weren’t for the characters’ names and the constant mentions of the cold, I wouldn’t have known better. I did enjoy how grey and smokey the factory scenes are.
This might be the weakest aspect of the book. I do not have anything else to add.
Themes
I’ve talked about this a bit in the plot section, but I really see this as a hope manifesto: something to make you fired up and full of passion to change—yourself and the world.
That aside, there are also other themes: Pelageya’s love as a mother [figure]; how religion can chain you down if you have nothing else; and the importance of comradery in life, political or not.
Pelageya’s relationship with Christianism was one of the most interesting aspects of the book, even if it wasn’t a main focus over its entirety, but snipets showing how she was feeling and evolving.
Just like Marx said, Religion is the opium of the masses. No one blames the working class for being so dependant on religion for their life meaning, as we live a life devoid of true meaning, where we only work so we can survive, not thrive.
I’m not Christian but I deeply respect Jesus and what he stands for (personally, I believe all religious and divine entities exist, I just don’t worship him.) He was a comrade, and I believe being a Christian and fighting for the working class is not contradictory at all. In fact, it should be expected.
It was such a captivating book, and I found Pelageya’s development truly lovely. She inspired me: I can only hope I am as good as her in my future.
Conclusion
In summary: great themes, a wonderful protagonist with constant growth and in general, an uplifting story. The cast can feel a bit one-dimensional at times, but the focus is on the protagonist, Pelageya.
If you can’t stand stories where there’s nothing super exciting happening, then this is NOT for you.
However, if you want a heartwarming tale of a mother-son relationship blooming after a cold winter, do give this one a try!
After this, I’m very much wanting to read more of his works—and I do have another one somewhere in my shelf!
Overall, I will give this one a 8/10, or 4 stars!

Thank you for reading it all to the end! Hey, kind stranger! Would you be so kind and consider giving me a little tip? It can be as low as 3 bucks and it’d make a huuuuuge difference!! If you tip 10€ (or higher), you can dictate my next read and be credited (if you’d like) on that review! Have a nice day!!
