It’s been about 9 months since I joined tumblr to start making comics. Which is a favorite number. So here’s a status report of 9 lessons (coincidence) from what is proving to be an awkward but fun process

No such thing as a bad drawing - it’s just expression and information. Is it “good”? No no. Does it have character? Personality? Am I clear enough?

The venn diagram of my favorite work and what was fun to make is a circle. I only started noticing this recently. Some styles or themes let me slow down and take my time.

There’s tons of ways to go about stuff and most aren’t for me or my brain. But some are. The most beneficial youtube tutorials weren’t always the ones with the most views.

If I’m not actively looking for and trying new techniques I don’t improve much at all.

I want the benefits of a sketchbook practice but a lifetime of buying cute notebooks to never use has made it too hard. Too much pressure. So I buy packs of printer paper and use a clipboard. This works fuckin great. Game changer. It’s also real satisfying to watch the paper stack grow.

Writing jokes got a lot easier when I stopped trying to ‘be funny’ and started trying to abuse the audience a little. Sorry.

Before I fell into a process I’d spend 10 minutes drawing the thing but then 2 hours tweaking details only to prefer the ten minute original.

It takes a lot of courage to post something without prefacing it with “I know this sucks but…” It’s forced me to accept and nurture my skill level as opposed to defending my taste level. Not yet ready to stop calling everything a doodle though.

Sharing & posting work really slaps the rose tinted glasses from your face, which is unfortunately necessary for improvement.

✨preferences should not be standards for writing advice✨

#whenever i see writing advice i just get annoyed #honestly one of my biggest gripes about writing communities in general is this #constant need to regurgitate certain pieces of writing advice like they’re ambrosia of the gods #my biggest writing advice is to just stop fucking listening to all writing advice that has to do with #prose and style #just stop doing it #read books and find things you like and craft your own style of things #i know this is not simple for everyone but i’m tired of constantly seeing #i think flowery prose bogs things down too much #and i think that direct prose isn’t good enough at putting people in the world #like mate—everyone has preferences and preferences do not make good advice #so like #i wish people would stop acting like their opinion is the next best piece of writing advice #it doesn’t help anyone it just causes fucking insecurities #i am also having sensory overload so perhaps ren doth bitch too much #but you can pry flowery prose and run on sentences and incomprehensible blocks of text from my cold dead hands #bc it makes me happy to write like this and fuck off #ren hot cakes #i’ll delete this later im just cold and annoyed #and unfortunately you can thank my mother bc im extremely passive aggressive

Vanya seemingly being honest in her guilt - something Arthur understands like no one else - but that being what seals the last nail into her coffin, so to speak. Because Arthur gets guilt, this immortal endless guilt, probably more than anyone else. He knows what it means to try to atone for something you cannot. And like guilt, he gets anger. In trying to find some sort of humanity, to relate to his better nature, she just pissed him off - because she was the one who turned him, she was the one who orchestrated and sat back and watched as he did what he did. How dare she be the one who survives and try to move on, how dare she claim to suffer the same guilt that claws at him, that haunts his nightmares. She doesn’t get to feel this, she doesn’t get to have this redemption, or mercy.

And at the same time, I don’t think Arthur was ever really going to let her go. I think her fate was sealed when Arthur reached out to Magnus to be there - a human friend, a hunter friend, called not only to shoot Vanya should things go south, but to take out Arthur as well, should he lose himself in a frenzy. It was probably sealed far before then, despite the century Arthur had to deliberate. There was never going to be any room for any forgiveness for her, because he has none for himself.

Gonna say it here too but Wei Wuxian has nothing to be sorry for regarding Nightless City.

He tried to speak but they refused to listen.

He was attacked first, defended himself, and was condemned for it.

They wanted to kill not only him, but all the innocent people he was protecting as well.

People blaming him for the ensuing slaughter when his mind broke upon Jiang Yanli’s sacrifice (which was ALSO not his fault like c’mon???) make no sense to me.

They pushed him to it.

They spit on the sacrifices of Wen Qing and Wen Ning.

They refused to hear him out and decided he was done for before Jin Zixuan even died, let’s be real.

(And no, 3000 cultivators did not die at Nightless City. Wei Wuxian straight up questions the absurdity of such a high number himself.)

I don’t know, I’ll probably delete this, but it boggles my mind when people hold this against Wei Wuxian when he was the one attacked.
