An introduction from BrianLinuxing, welcome

Good afternoon, good evening and good night, but more importantly welcome to my new mini blog!

I’m BrianLinuxing across social media and here as well, yet in truth I am just an old IT manager, who’s forgotten more than I want to ever think about.

I used to work in the City of London (the financial sector), doing complex computing things, building datacentres from scratch or migrating Mainframes, long before Google existed or there was a handy YouTube channel to explain everything!

I’ve done a lot over the years and started coding when Richard Nixon was in power, imagine that.

I have worked across many sectors, academia, Banking, commercial and also charities.

Non-profit-wise, I founded and ran the largest Linux community group in Britain.

I co-founded the largest Raspberry Pi community in London.

I give talks on tech, Linux, operating systems and how best to do technology the smart way. I run classes on Linux, how to get started, best practices and why to use it.

My computing talks and classes span the history of computing from the Abacus, to my new one: a quick guide to the AWS Amazon Linux 2 CLI.

Still, enough of me, that will be all explained in my new blog elsewhere when I finally managed to bolt it together, from all of the many disparate parts.

The function of this Tumblr blog is to collate my mini-reviews of #IoT devices, single board computers, strange pieces of tech and also to explain the odd gotchas that occur in Linux sometimes.

Poor old Woolies can’t take a trick. If they weren’t rolling in billion-dollar notes, I’d almost feel sorry for the so-called Fresh Food People.

Adding to their many woes, the supermarket giant sent staff a memo a few days ago on ‘Preferred Dress Guidelines’.

The memo alerts workers to an obviously serious safety issue.

“We have recently observed instances of poor dress standards that may pose a potential food safety risk and/or injury in our stores.”

Wow! That’s a bother. You’d wanna fix that quickly.

But how on Earth do you suffer a food safety risk or injury from a Woolies staff uniform?

I’m a regular Woolies shopper. My Rewards Card has been around the block, I can tell you.

But I’ve never perceived the staff uniforms as dangerous.

Please, Mr Woolworths, can you specify exactly how poor dress standards pose a risk to food safety risk or injury?

Sadly, the memo never gets around to that. But it does go on to list the various changes necessary to alleviate the risks.

And at Number Two:

“Our team and customers would like to know who you are. Display your name badge on top of the handy green dots on your garments. Keep your name badge clean and tidy. No stickers are to be added to your badge.”

Previously, Woolies allowed staff to wear stickers showing the Indigenous flag, the LGBT flag and the LGBT Ally flag. Indeed, one anonymous staff member told Channel 7 that Woolies encouraged staff to wear the stickers.

“On our badges, we have stickers that they encouraged us to wear. The stickers are the indigenous flag, LGBT flag and the LGBT Ally flag sticker.”

BUT NO MORE!

“Now they want us to remove all stickers on our badges.”

So there you have it.

Removing Indigenous and LGBT stickers from name badges will apparently alleviate risks to food safety risk or injury.

Or perhaps Woolies are running scared from accusations of wokeness after the poorly managed Australia Day hullabaloo.

The one thing that can keep us from getting bored is Imagination. It is something which we start doing right from our childhood. We start forming ideas, images, and sensations in the mind without any input from the senses. It is the first concrete step to create something new, although the first requirement is the will to create.

Many great people have asserted the importance of imagination. Without it, the world as we know and see today was just not possible. What we see today around us, all the inventions, all those things that have made our life so easy to live, were born in the mind of their inventor, because he/she was creative enough to do that. But how it was born in his/her mind? The answer is imagination. All the great inventors first started to imagine a solution for a problem, an idea to make a certain work easy for us. For e.g. Abacus; has made solving complex problems easy for our ancestors; even now it is used to calculate. Imagination itself is a great tool to solve our problems. If you want to become creative, you have to start imagining, you need to be willing to take in new possibilities. It is possible to become great in art and craft with the help of imagination. To begin the process of imagination, you just have to ask one question to yourself what if? And proceed with the possibilities.

To be good at the fine arts of warli painting, mural, Madhubani paintings, Mandala art, glass painting, etc. You ought to have creativity, and the beginning of creation is Imagination. What we start to do as children, we must continue it during our whole lifetime; who knows, out of nowhere, we will create something great or solve a big, persistent problem. Thus, imagination needs to be an integral part of us.
