btw if you want to find artists that post regularly but dont get many notes its usually pretty easy if you go into the イラスト tag, which is the tag japanese artists use for illustrations. (イラスト being "irasuto", short for "irasutorashon", or illustration) i just found like 5 today that regularly get 10-100 notes on really cute pics posted semi-regularly. for whatever reason that side of tumblr is just not getting any views or any spread on their work which really sucks, so if you like any art there you can make a difference with a few button clicks, and suddenly you have a regular stream of Cute Pictures

Modern Japanese Painting Techniques

Book review:

This how to paint guide goes beyond what its perfunctory title suggests. The primary goal of teaching various techniques and variations is compartmentalised into the latter half of the book. Preceding this happens to be a detailed analysis of what Japanese style painting encompasses, its history, characteristics, commentary as well as cases of non-Japanese artists whose style matches the aesthetic. Furthermore, due to the individualistic writing, the author, Shinichi Fukui, provides a deal of insight into the psyche of an established, commercial illustrator such as himself.

Shinichi Fukui is an illustrator who is accustomed to working to commercial schedules and corporate clients. His speciality is a style that is a close match to what is perceived as Japanese style painting. These being of flat, stylised images, mostly lacking in shadow or depth or shading. As he readily explains, what he does is not truly authentic Japanese painting. He is an exponent of user friendly acrylics over the use of authentic pigments in glue. The convenience and properties of such also being suited to beginning artists.

Not everyone considering picking up this book necessarily needs be able to articulate the differentiating merits between Saunders Waterford and Watson paper. In fact the technical and skill broadening only happens in the second half of the book. Although when it does, it happens in photographic, annotated detail. The flagship examples are afforded a dozen pages each. These show the building of an example painting in step by step stages. Another detailed section exists showing how photographs of a live model (poses, perspectives and ornaments) can be used as a foundation to be evolved into different variations of drawn and painted output.

The first half of the book is where the more general appeal lies. This section is concerned with the concept of Japanese painting and commentary expands from there. Several artists, including non-Japanese ones (whose work exemplifies the sought aesthetic) are detailed and discussed. By way of the book as a whole, the opinionated, highly first person writing style reveals much about the author, Shinichi Fukui's, psyche, thought process, preferences and overall working mind of a professional illustrator.
