“Looking for trouble, are we?”

OH YES

Arthur had his eye on John, was scribbling in his journal under the morning sun. He was letting his hair dry out from the bath in the lake as he watched over John who was now on his knees in the cool water. John was okay with water like this, calm, soothing, shallow. It let Arthur know that one thing was okay with the world. 

It was a few minutes of scrubbing and splashing before Arthur didn’t hear anything anymore, but he could tell that John wasn’t dead in the water. It was a second sense more or less, feeling the hair on the back of his neck prickle when John was about to do something stupid. 

Arthur didn’t even look up from his sketch of the lake and the mountains when he spoke, “Looking for trouble, are we?” he asked, his brow raising a little as he heard the soft and disappointed groan of John right beside him. 

“How?! Every time!” John whined, he was so close to wringing his hair out over Arthur’s head.

Arthur snorted with a smile, “because I’ve lived with you long enough to know when you’re up to no good. Right after a bath is one of ‘em when I’m tryin’ to dry out.” Arthur put his journal down to look up at John, watching the younger sit down, ass naked, on his own towel. Arthur made sure they both brought one after they both forgot to bring even one a few years ago. 

Arthur was also naked, and pale everywhere his clothes usually covered, john was much the same as his chest held a deep V and his forearms were much darker in tone than his upper arms. 

“Lay down and relax you brat, we’re close enough to camp that we can holler for help. Just get yourself all dry and maybe put some colour to even yourself out. You look like ill-cooked chicken.”

John barked a laugh. “Yeah? You ain’t much better, you look like raw dough in some places.” With that John laid out on his back, letting the mid-spring sun dry him off and kiss his skin. “Gonna catch a nap.”

“I’ll wake you so you don’t burn your bits, Abby and me happen to like them.” Arthur watched John smile warmly, putting his hat over the upper part of his face and melting into the heated towel. 

“Troublemaker.” Arthur murmured.
