Lost and Delirious (2001)

I'll admit Lost and Delirious has moments of obvious symbolism and the drama can be a bit much. Considering the film is about teenagers and their bursting emotions, it doesn't seem that big an issue. It's a drama filled with excellent performances and big emotions.

Mary (Mischa Barton) is sent to an all-girls boarding school by her widowed father who has recently remarried. Awkward, shy, and inexperienced, Mary now shares a dorm room with two older girls, Paulie (Piper Perabo) and Victoria “Tori” (Jessica Paré). Mary observes her roommates' evolving lesbian relationship as the three young women hit rocky episodes throughout the school year.

The characters within this story feel real. Everyone has little quirks, hobbies, faults, and moments that allow you to get to know them. I know more about teaching Spanish than I do about what high school would be like as a young lesbian. After this movie, I feel like I understand things better. It helps that there aren’t really any heroes or villains here. There are only people in a world that occasionally forces against each other. Sometimes teenage girls tease and spread rumors whose consequences they couldn't possibly know. Sometimes teachers can help students when they need them most. Sometimes they can’t. I recognized an element of nearly every single scene in my high-school experience.

The numerous clichéd and overly dramatic moments are there. It's fair to critique the movie for them. You'll wonder why Tori, after getting her heart broken is so inconsolable, why she seems to become obsessed with Shakespeare. The answer is that she’s a teenager. Teenagers are melodramatic, they get obsessed over trivial things because they can’t control their emotions. They’re quick to label their first significant other as the love of their life and equally eager to dismiss something that previously meant the world to them. Do the characters in this picture over-react? Yes. Take the circumstances into consideration, however. Being a teenager is hard. Think of how much more uncomfortable it would be if you suspected (within reason) that your family sent you off to a school so they could get rid of you. Unfortunately, much like Mary, all you can do is watch.

The performances are terrific. Everybody looks the part, they carry their weight in the emotional sequences. The scenes that would feel sleazy and exploitative elsewhere are simply natural thanks to some good direction by Léa Pool. The weeping and sulking perhaps less so the nth time around. It does get a little frustrating, particularly since we've seen this kind of thing in several other stories and when paired with the heavy-handed towards the end. Basically, it’s a sub-plot with Tori that symbolizes her wanting to escape and be free that involves an injured bird. You already know the whole arc from those two words.

Adults whose formative years are far behind them might need to dig a bit to really “get” the emotion and drama of Lost and Delirious. It'll come if you have patience. Adolescents will be impacted immediately. The nudity will prevent it from being shown in classrooms but if you’re a parent and you want to teach your kids about the different viewpoints they'll encounter in life, watch it with your kids. It’s good conversation material, that’s for sure. (On DVD, June 28, 2015)

We metaphorically added a number of other Special Operations Veterans’ VA, PTSD and TBI experiences to complete the story. Ryan’s struggle with VA care was well documented, and in the end, he took his own life leaving instructions for his brain to be donated to science so that other people suffering from TBI and PTSD might benefit from his death. His wish came true. The post mortem study of his brain showed massive amounts of astroglial scarring due to blast wave injury, and has helped research into the mechanism of injury and treatment. I’m posting these pictures so that anyone who watched Brett Swann’s story understands that there are real people behind his character. This is a multifaceted problem that involves veterans who were exposed to blast waves, the Department of Defense and the Veterans Administration.
