i think you’re not surprised.
❛ oh, i'm sorry habibi, ❜ joe's mouth turns into a downards pout, even as he catches nicky around the waist and pulls him close. it's true, this was not a surprise - but it is only not a surprise because joe has known nicky for so long, and so he knows when it is that nicky is planning surprises. it doesn't make the event any less delightful!
just not surprising.
he kisses nicky anyway, kisses his jaw and his cheek and his nose and finally finds his way home to kiss him deeply, in the way only lovers who know each other wholly can do. ❛ i love you. and i am thankful for you. and if you would like me to step out and return and try again, i will certainly do that for you. ❜

Waaju - Grown - another fruit of the fecund UK jazz scene (Olindo Records)
Pulsing Afro-Latin roots and UK jazz combine on Grown, the latest album by London-based quintet Waaju, released via Olindo Records. Fusing dexterous hand-percussion, hypnotic guitar riffs and soaring melodies, Waaju connect a wide range of traditional musics percolating at different corners of the global soundscape yet with a distinctly of-the-moment and British jazz flavour. Led by drummer and percussionist Ben Brown (Alfa Mist, Dizraeli, Ashley Henry), and comprising members across the UK’s extensive music scene including, percussionist Ernesto Marichales (Jordan Rakei, Sigala), guitarist Tal Janes (Nubiyan Twist, Bahla), Sam Rapley (Fabled, Maria Chiara Argiro) and Joe Downard (China Moses, Judi Jackson), Waaju’s unique and divergent sound connects the dots between the likes of Beth Carvalho, Oscar D’Leon, Alain Peters and Los Muñequitos de Matanzas. Waaju formed as a means of exploring music’s hidden connections, from trance-inducing Moroccan gnawa to Caribbean carnival music, and embracing them to reflect the different layers of London’s own musical culture. It was the band’s love for Mali’s folk music – and Ali Farka Touré’s stylistic prowess in particular – that first set the project in motion. London’s Jazz Cafe invited Waaju to reinterpret classic tracks from Farka Touré’s catalogue to sold-out audiences in 2018 and 2019. According to Brown: “Ali’s one of the best. He has such a unique sound. His playing is so gnarly. His spirit and attitude are things I always think of when making music.” Waaju (meaning ‘to urge, inspire or influence to take action’ in Bambara) blend Latin polyrhythms, psychedelic Malian blues licks and dancefloor-oriented UK jazz arrangements. Following the group’s 2018 self-titled debut LP, Grown represents Waaju at their most distinctive and refined. Ben Brown - drums, percussion Sam Rapley - saxophone, shaker (track 4) Tal Janes - guitar Ernesto Marichales - congas, percussion Joe Downard - bass

Rediscovering Nina Simone
We stroll into the Blues Kitchen - Brixton not really sure what to expect from the 'Story Of' series, this time based on the life and music on Nina Simone. What we found was something really quite special. This performance was not one of the singer but a collective of the musicians around her. Each piece of Judi Jackson's gospel band was a key element to magic of this show. As the set list unfolds we hear an abundance of bold sounds from Toby Seed (Guitar),  Jamie Safir (Keys), Will Cleasby (Drums) Rachel Cohen (Saxophone), Mark Kavuma (Trumpet) and Joe Downard (Bass). But it was the unmistakable and incredible talent of Judi Jackson herself that brought life, soul and electricity to this performance. Her haunting likeness to the great Amy Winehouse combined with her own unique style, powerful voice and her sexuality had us weak at the knees, tears in our eyes and every emotion running around the body as she hit us with Nina Simone's best known tracks. The keys and bass come in and its Sinnerman kicking off the set. A 10 minute, electrifying cover, sung with such conviction and power, Judi could've have written this song herself. Unfortunately she can't take all the credit, and neither, it seems, does she want to. The gospel band, each given their own moment of glory kill the audience with jaw dropping solos. We just stood there with our eyes closed feeling the passion coming through every bar and every note. As the set plays on we are taken through a roller coaster of soulful jazz, blues and the musical political out-cries of black America. We can really feel Judi Jacksons connection to the songs she is singing. Unlike most gigs where you are left with a song leaving you full of joy,we end the night with a spine tingling rendition of 'Black Is The Colour of My True Loves Hair'. The band fades away leaving us with Judi and her Pianist. Our eyes are wide and close to tears. Unsure when our last breath was taken, she belts the final note and we can finally exhale. The Blue Kitchen erupts. A different feeling overwhelms us as we leave. We have been moved by this incredible performer. This is one to watch! Until next time. Happy soul searching.B

Waaju - s/t LP (Olindo Records)
We’re delighted to present our second release and first LP on Olindo Records by London based afro-latin jazz quintet Waaju. A project that never stands still, Waaju’s members have been busy as part of other ensembles (Caravela, Bahla, Jordan Rakei, and Ashley Henry to name a few), which means they cherish each time they get to make music together. The five cuts on this LP are only a snapshot of what they’re doing and continually trying to do - the tip of the iceberg - but one that speaks volumes about their intentions. Sam Rapley - tenor saxophone Tal Janes - guitar Joe Downard - bass Ernesto Marichales - percussion Ben Brown - drums, percussion

Mighty Maceo Parker is coming back with the new single “Cross The Track” from his forthcoming cover album “‘Soul Food – Cooking with Maceo”.
Tumblr media
Mighty Maceo Parker is coming back with the new single “Cross The Track” from his forthcoming cover album “Soul Food – Cooking with Maceo”. That album blends raw, old school funk with the flavors of New Orleans, as Maceo and the band takes on iconic songs from Mississippi masters like Dr. John (“Right Place, Wrong Time”) The Meters (“Just Kissed My Baby”) and Allen Toussaint (“Yes, We Can Can), as well as Aretha Franklin’s “Rock Steady,” Prince’s “The Other Side of the Pillow” and David “Fathead” Newman’s “Hard Times.” We also get funky workouts from Parker’s own back catalog on "M A C E O" and "Cross The Track”. Watch the video to Maceo Parker new songs “Cross The Track” first single from his forthcoming cover album “‘Soul Food – Cooking with Maceo” below: “One of the things that I have enjoyed about being an artist is that sooner or later it’s time to record new material. Somehow, this time around, we decided to cover some tunes. So, that’s what this album is all about. In the studio, you have the luxury of recording songs by groups that you have enjoyed throughout the years. Once you become a recording artist, there’s a satisfaction that you are now part of the collective group of artists that you admire. Maceo & All the King’s Men was the first band I formed after leaving James Brown’s group. There is a sense of pride when, as a musician, you reach a level where your own material is in stores and being played on the air. Aaron Parks come back with the second chapter of his “Little Big II: Dreams of a Mechanical Man”.
Tumblr media
Aaron Parks come back with the second chapter of his “Little Big II: Dreams of a Mechanical Man”. Aaron Parks with his band members Greg Tuohey on guitar, David Ginyard Jr on bass Tommy Crane on drums, are playing together as one. Slow soft ballads but melodic and hypnotic at the same time. Such a beautiful album, highly recommended, one of our favourites this year for sure. “Today, the band operates as a single organism. The first record was about the tunes and the aesthetic. This album keeps that focus and also captures the chemistry we’ve developed on the road, the way this band feels as it makes music at the moment”, said Aaron Parks about new album. Watch the video to Aaron Parks new song “Attention, Earthlings” the latest single from his new album “Little Big II: Dreams of a Mechanical Man” below: Aaron Parks was recording and touring with guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, saxophonist Charles Lloyd, trumpeters Terence Blanchard, Christian Scott, and Ambrose Akinmusire, singer Gretchen Parlato, and drummers Terri Lyne Carrington and Kendrick Scott. Blundetto released two reggae driven new singles “Sunday in the Club” and “Fly High”
Tumblr media
Blundetto released two reggae driven new singles “Sunday in the Club” and “Fly High” feat Hindi Zahra, the first two singles from his forthcoming new album “Good Good Things” (Heavenly Sweetness). It’s exactly 10 years after his critical acclaimed debut album “Bad Bad Things”, it looks like that all that bad things turned into good things for talented French producer hidden under Blundetto name. It’s Max Guiguet, French DJ, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. His production sometimes is more Reggae-oriented, sometimes it brings you directly to a Jazz club in Paris. Watch the video to Blundetto new song “Sunday in the Club” the first single from his forthcoming new album “Good Good Things” below: Some of his usual collaborators joined him on this album: Marcos Garcia aka Chico Mann (Antibalas), Hervé Salters aka General Electrics, and Moroccan singer and actress Hindi Zahra, who sang two songs. "But for me reggae is the soul. It's a Jamaican soul, that's all. Besides, reggae, originally, in the 60s and 70s, it was only covers of soul standards taken over in Jamaican style. I'm not connected to Rastafarianism or green-yellow-red. I feel more concerned with major universal themes: what touches me is when these voices sing the love, heartache, that sort of thing ... It's the common thread of all these pieces: it's soul ", Blundetto explained his love to reggae and biggest inspiration. Wanubale shared an energetic new single “Nadra / Loose Focus”
Tumblr media
Wanubale shared an energetic new single “Nadra / Loose Focus”. The band is a collective of 9 young musicians based in Berlin and Potsdam. They met at school, five of the nine in the band went to the same musical high school in Berlin. Heavily inspired by the cities' fresh Jazz scene and distinct club culture they set up this wonderful and fresh musical project. Influences come from Jazz, Neo Soul, and Funk one side, and Dub, Bass Music and Broken Beat from the other. A unique mixture of styles and vital energy onto the stage helped to shape their compositions. Watch the video to Wanubale new song “Nadra / Loose Focus below: “Nadra / Loose Focus” is a very natural evolution of the ideas and impressions Wanubale got after releasing their first album in 2019 and a step closer towards their vision of the band's sound. As for the debut album "Phosphenes", this single has been recorded at the Jazzanova Studios in Berlin, but this time they put a bigger effort into the postproduction. The two tracks differ massively in their kind of groove and their influences but they show their common language with their own little twist on it. Listen to Wanubale new song “Nadra / Loose Focus” below: Nadra / Loose Focus by Wanubalé Wanubale shared an energetic new single “Nadra / Loose Focus” is available via Agogo Records.   Personnel: Gabriel Rosenbach (tpt) Niko Zeidler (ts) Jonathan Steffen (tb) Anton Kowalski (bar) Max Feig (el-g) · Moses Yoofee Vester (key) Moritz Schmolke (b-g) Heinrich Eiszmann (dr) Philip Schilz (dr) Other wicked songs and projects worth checking this week: Wanubalé - Nadra Blundetto - Sunday in the Club Khruangbin - Time (You and I) The Fearless Flyers - Nate Smith Is the Ace of Aces Maceo Parker - The Cross The Track Menahan Street Band - Queens Highway Polyrhythmics - The Cutdown Les Frères Smith, Seun Kuti - No Waiting Olivier St.Louis - Runnin' Wild Flevans, Laura Vane - Ten Feet Tall Ambrose Akinmusire - Mr. Roscoe (consider the simultaneous) Aaron Parks - Attention, Earthlings Christian Sands, Marcus Strickland - Drive Christian McBride Big Band - Don Is Joe Downard, Alex Hitchcock - Terror Quantum Trio - This Far Read the full article

Uk jazz outfit Waaju released a new single “Listening Glasses”
Tumblr media
Uk jazz quintet Waaju released a new single “Listening Glasses” from their forthcoming second album "Grown". Since debut self-titled album released in 2018 via London’s independent label Olindo Records, the band’s sound has developed, as we can say “grown”. They took influence from a number of cultures across Africa, South America & beyond, adding new dimensions to their sound. The record will also feature a song co-written with Jordan Rakei. Waaju is led by drummer and percussionist Ben Brown (Alfa Mist, Dizraeli, Ashley Henry), and comprising members across the UK’s extensive music scene including, percussionist Ernesto Marichales (Jordan Rakei, Sigala), guitarist Tal Janes (Nubiyan Twist, Bahla), Sam Rapley (Fabled, Maria Chiara Argiro) and Joe Downard (China Moses, Judi Jackson). Waaju’s unique and divergent sound connects the dots between the all of those influences around the globe, samba, salsa, rumba, jazz and African blues. Listen to Waaju new song “Listening Glasses”, the lead single from their upcoming album “Grown” below: Grown by Waaju   Waaju (meaning ‘to urge, inspire or influence to take action’ in Bambara) blend Latin polyrhythms, psychedelic Malian blues licks and dancefloor-oriented UK jazz arrangements. Waaju formed as a means of exploring music’s hidden connections, from trance-inducing Moroccan gnawa to Caribbean carnival music, and embracing them to reflect the different layers of London’s own musical culture. Waaju drummer Ben Brown said: “The amazing thing about music is that one can display the belief, compassion and love that takes a lifetime to acquire, in just a few seconds. As well as all these things, I hope this snapshot gives a glimpse into undiscovered places in the world and in ourselves”.
