Juanita Euka - Mabanzo - an engrossing (and beautifully produced) tour through Afro-Latin styles (Strut Records)
Strut present the debut solo album Mabanzo by Congolese vocalist, Juanita Euka. A familiar face to many from London’s vibrant live music scene over the last decade, Juanita has fronted London Afrobeat Collective’s dynamic live shows, the fusions and cross-pollinations of Animanz and maverick Cuban collective Wara. As a solo artist, she broke through in early 2020, performing her single ‘Alma Seca’ in series 3 of blockbuster series Killing Eve. Originally from DR Congo and brought up in Buenos Aires, Juanita’s upbringing involved many different musical influences, not least her uncle, Congolese rumba giant Franco Luambo Makiadi. “In Argentina, I listened to a wide range of styles from African-American artists to Dominican stars like Juan Luis Guerra, the Congolese greats like my uncle and Papa Wemba and various artists from Argentina including Mercedes Sosa. Some of my main inspirations were (and still are) international Afro-Cuban artists like Celia Cruz and La Lupe.” Moving to the UK aged 14, she joined Afro-Peruvian band Malambo and immersed herself in London’s own sounds, from Soul to Jazz to Funk. With her new album Mabanzo (meaning ‘Thoughts’), Juanita brings together her many and varied musical influences into play and pulls no lyrical punches. Killer dancefloor single ‘Nalingi Mobali Te’ is pure contemporary Congolese guitar gold, ‘Mboka Moka’ channels ‘80s boogie and Quincy horn stylings on an anthem for personal struggle and ‘Baño de Oro’ brings a heavy Afro-Cuban workout. Elsewhere, the epic ballad ‘Sueños de Libertad’ is an impassioned call for freedom and the lilting ‘For All It’s Worth’ champions love over materialism. Recorded entirely at home studios during lockdown, the album was painstakingly constructed by producer Greg Sanders with all musicians recorded remotely. “I have always written songs and poems since I was young,” reflects Euka. “I met Greg, a multi-instrumentalist and producer, while I was in Wara and we started the journey towards a solo project. Greg has that knowledge and vision of different sounds and it is the perfect way to celebrate my music journey. I have tried to bring all of the musical heritage that I have experienced into my album.” Juanita Euka: Lead Vocals, Backing Vocals Greg Sanders: Guitars, Bass Guitars, Keys, Synths, Programming Sara Farina: Bass Guitar Tom Herbert: Upright Bass Chris Williams, Leo Richardsdon, Sam Rapley: Saxophones Eliane Correa: Keys Will Fry, Ernesto Marichales, Leandro Mancini-Olivos, Richard Olatunde Baker, Lya Reis Guerruero: Percussion Flora Curzon: Violin Kareem Dayes: Cello Fabio De Oliveira, Ben Assiter, George Bird: Drumkit Graeme Flowers: Trumpet, Flugelhorn Kieran McLeod, Landy Diaz: Trombone Jonathan Whitten: Hammered Dulcimer All tracks arranged & produced by Greg Sanders All tracks mixed by Lester Salmins

Everywhere Unseen - New Zealand from Monster Children on Vimeo.
This is the first in an ongoing series where we take four photographers, send them out into the world, and see what they bring back. The idea is, while they're all travelling to the same destinations, each photographer will have a different take on his surroundings, providing us with four completely different points of view. For this first outing, we went to the South Island of New Zealand and met with Kiwi photographers Jake Mein, Nick Rapley, Jereme Aubertin, and Beth Eastell. Everyone loaded into the truck, cameras in hand, and for four days we travelled through the most remote areas of Te Waipounamu, stopping at Wanaka, The Catlins, Dunedin, and then back through Saint Bathans. So here it is, Everywhere Unseen in New Zealand.

Could your health visitor win the Julie Crawford Award 2018?
Could your Health Visitor win the 2018 Julie Crawford Award for Breastfeeding Support?
Julie Crawford Award for Breastfeeding Support 2018
Nominations are now OPEN
The Baby Feeding Law Group is seeking nominations for the Julie Crawford Award for Breastfeeding Support. Nominations must be sent to Baby Milk Action (BFLG Secretariat) by 15th April 2018
On the Right is Rosemary Brown, winner of the 2016 Award.
Criteria for the Award
This Award is given by the Baby Feeding Law Group. It is open to practising health visitors or practising health visiting teams who have made significant contribution to – or have an ongoing impact on – breastfeeding support in the UK, at individual or policy level.
Nominees must have demonstrated an awareness and commitment to the protection and defence of breastfeeding, facilitating universal access for support that is independent of commercial influence.
To help publicise the call for nominations, please share the link:
http://www.babyfeedinglawgroup.org.uk/bflg/juliecrawfordaward
Information on the nomination and award process is given below.
Background
In November 2001, Julie Crawford died from a rare disease, at the age of 42. Julie was a health visitor and a former Director of Baby Milk Action. She cared passionately about breastfeeding and was never frightened to stand up and fight for the rights of mothers to independent and sensitive care. Julie was especially concerned about the extent of industry funding of education for health professionals and was also keen to push for legal action in defence of mother’s rights to breastfeed. She was one of the first health visitors to participate in the International Breastfeeding Course at the Institute of Child Health (self-funded, since employers could not find the resources).
In 1992, she wrote in the Joint Breastfeeding Initiative newsletter about the barriers to breastfeeding support from within the health visiting and midwifery professions – where so many had not had adequate training and so many had not had adequate support for their own breastfeeding experiences and the chance to discuss the feelings this left them with: “there is no safe forum in which to reach some understanding”.  Julie also noted that “many health professionals endorse expectations of infant behaviour which damage breastfeeding” and called for “articulate voices” to promote change for mothers and for health professionals.
Guidelines for nominations
Please see the above criteria and send us a few paragraphs (around 300 words) about why you think your candidates should win. Bear in mind that this is not an award for straightforward breastfeeding support. They should also play a role in protecting parents from commercial influence (marketing, promotion); aspects that are not always obvious.
It’s not necessary at this stage for your candidates to know that they are nominated, but unless you know them well, it may be easier to write something about them if you have their cooperation. It would be helpful to the judges if you could provide contact details of someone who is willing to second your nomination.
Where to send your nomination
Please send your nomination to Jennie Evans, Baby Milk Action Office Manager, by email [email protected] or by post:
Baby Milk Action 4 Brooklands Avenue Cambridge CB2 8BB
Please remember to include contact details for yourself and your candidates (including where they work) and where possible the contact details of someone who is willing to second your nomination.
If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact Jennie at the above address or by telephone 01223 464420.
Shortlisting
Nominees will be informed of the status of their nomination and whether they have been shortlisted for the award.
The Award Winner
The winner will be notified in early April  2018.

Waaju - Grown - another fruit of the fecund UK jazz scene (Olindo Records)
Pulsing Afro-Latin roots and UK jazz combine on Grown, the latest album by London-based quintet Waaju, released via Olindo Records. Fusing dexterous hand-percussion, hypnotic guitar riffs and soaring melodies, Waaju connect a wide range of traditional musics percolating at different corners of the global soundscape yet with a distinctly of-the-moment and British jazz flavour. Led by drummer and percussionist Ben Brown (Alfa Mist, Dizraeli, Ashley Henry), and comprising members across the UK’s extensive music scene including, percussionist Ernesto Marichales (Jordan Rakei, Sigala), guitarist Tal Janes (Nubiyan Twist, Bahla), Sam Rapley (Fabled, Maria Chiara Argiro) and Joe Downard (China Moses, Judi Jackson), Waaju’s unique and divergent sound connects the dots between the likes of Beth Carvalho, Oscar D’Leon, Alain Peters and Los Muñequitos de Matanzas. Waaju formed as a means of exploring music’s hidden connections, from trance-inducing Moroccan gnawa to Caribbean carnival music, and embracing them to reflect the different layers of London’s own musical culture. It was the band’s love for Mali’s folk music – and Ali Farka Touré’s stylistic prowess in particular – that first set the project in motion. London’s Jazz Cafe invited Waaju to reinterpret classic tracks from Farka Touré’s catalogue to sold-out audiences in 2018 and 2019. According to Brown: “Ali’s one of the best. He has such a unique sound. His playing is so gnarly. His spirit and attitude are things I always think of when making music.” Waaju (meaning ‘to urge, inspire or influence to take action’ in Bambara) blend Latin polyrhythms, psychedelic Malian blues licks and dancefloor-oriented UK jazz arrangements. Following the group’s 2018 self-titled debut LP, Grown represents Waaju at their most distinctive and refined. Ben Brown - drums, percussion Sam Rapley - saxophone, shaker (track 4) Tal Janes - guitar Ernesto Marichales - congas, percussion Joe Downard - bass
