If Romeo and Juliet did the bhangra - art and culture

After the hugely popular stage musical, Mughal-e-Azam, director, Feroz Abbas Khan, is back with Raunaq & Jassi, a new take on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. It bears all the elements of Khan’s signature style – lavish sets, colourful costumes and attention to detail. Khan’s latest is based on a classic, and so was Mughal-e-Azam. But that’s where the similarity ends. Khan said that Raunaq & Jassi’s scale and messaging should not be compared with any of his previous works. Mughal-e-Azamwas a theatrical adaptation of K Asif’s 1960 film, retaining the story and characters of the original. Raunaq & Jassi has only taken the idea of Romeo and Juliet, that of star-crossed lovers in the backdrop of hate. The script, music and dialogues are original. “We have made many changes... For example, there comes a point in the story when the two families forget why they hate each other,” said Khan. “Doing something on the lines of Mughal-e-Azam would have been an easy journey for me. The idea was to take the path less taken.” Why is the play set in the Punjab of the 1950s? “Think of Punjab and a certain terrain with a distinct sound and image of celebration come to mind. We have also set the story in 1950s rural Punjab to add colour to the overall story,” said Khan. He acknowledged that it was challenging to revisit a story which has been told in many languages in various eras. “I chose to go with a classic because it remains eternal. We’ve told the story in verse as the original tale is in verse,” he said.

“Doing something on the lines of ( Priyanka Parashar’/Mint ) There are high expectations from Khan’s latest. “People thought I would fail with Mughal-e-Azam because how could one surpass K Asif’s masterpiece? This time, they want me to succeed,” said the director. Khan has worked with the same team that helped him deliver Mughal-e-Azam: Manish Malhotra (costumes), Piyush Kanojia (music), Iqbal Raj (lyrics) and John Narun (projection design). Neha Sargam, who plays Jassi, had also played Anarkali in Mughal-e-Azam. “The previous play made my job easy this time round because I could work on my pronunciation and diction,” she said. “This role is more performance oriented as compared to Anarkali’s role which required a lot of singing,” she added. Raunaq & Jassi is scheduled to be staged from February 29 to March 1, at Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, Delhi Stage to screen, best adaptations New Theatre, London, 1935 Directed by John Gielgud, the play had Peggy Ashcroft as Juliet. Laurence Olivier and Gielgud alternated between Romeo and Mercutio. The George Cukor film, 1936 Starring Leslie Howard and Norma Shearer, it featured in The New York Times’ Best 1,000 Movies Ever Made. Old Vic Theatre, 1960 Lauded for its realism, this play was directed by Franco Zeffirelli. Judi Dench played Juliet, John Stride Romeo. West Side Story, 1961 Retold as a musical about two rival gangs in New York, the film won 10 Oscars. Natalie Wood played Maria (Juliet); Richard Beymer, Tony (Romeo). Royal Shakespeare Company, 1986 Set in the 1980s, in this play the actor wore Armani suits and death came with a drug-filled hypodermic needle. About

There is something pure about a friendship between young kids. The unconditional decision that “we’re friends now” is a joy to see. So much of adult friendship is based on schedules, compromises, planned excursions that it is good to be reminded about how simple it used to be. There are powerful friendships in X-Men, Kurt and Logan, Kitty and Rachel, Bobby and Hank, but more than all of those, is the unadulterated goodness of Artie and Leech.

Artie was a regular kid until his eleventh birthday. His mutant ability kicked in, turning his skin pink and lumpy and removing his ability to speak. He could psionically project manifestations of his thoughts but his communication skills were limited. His father, a scientist, tried experiments to cure his son and captured Beast to that end. X-Factor soon came to their friend’s rescue and a battle broke out. Knowing that Artie would be in the crossfire, Dr. Maddicks pleaded for X-Factor to take his boy to safety, sacrificing himself for his son.

Artie enjoyed his time with X-Factor and started looking up to Rusty, one of the older students. When they went to the Morlock Tunnels to assist in during the Mutant Massacre, Artie got lost and ran into Caliban and his new best friend Leech. Leech was a Morlock with green skin, a big head, and a grasp on sentence structure that could only come from growing up in the literal sewers. The trio was cornered by Sabertooth and Caliban was injured. Artie decided to be a hero and searched for X-Factor, only to find the god of Thunder instead. Thor helped the group make their way to X-Factor’s base and Leech didn’t forget Artie’s courage.

Artie and Leech became fast friends. All the other kids in X-Factor were older, they were worried about girls, and boys, and the future, and all sorts of things. Artie and Leech? They were just worried about playing. Sure they got caught up in adventures, but they were happier delivering Christmas presents to misfortunate children and messing around with the rest of the cast. X-Factor finally realized that eleven-year-old boys should probably be in a real school and sent them to St. Simons boarding school. The school quickly realized how close the boys were and declared that Artie and Leech were never to be separated.

At the school, they met a young boy named Taki. He was wheelchair bound and had a learning disability, combining that with the death of his parents turned Taki into a bitter boy. Artie and Leech, being the best kids, tried to reach out to him but Leech’s power negation field interfered with Taki’s electronics and Taki was not polite about it. Artie would not tolerate his best friend being treated like that and made Taki apologize. He came around to the power of friendship and became a buddy to the boys.

That night, demons under the command of N’Astirh captured the boys by mistake and brought them to their master. N’Astirh had little time for their incompetence but his goblins decided that it would be a shame to let good meat go to waste. N’Astirh told them that they could eat sweet Artie and Leech only after they captured the babies he would need to open a portal to Limbo. Artie used is powers to get a message out to the X-Factor kids and resigned himself to his fate. As the demons brought more and more babies, Artie and Leech did their best to keep the kids safe, even giving up the clothes on their back. Taki and the X-Terminators (Rusty, Boom Boom, Skids, and Rictor) freed the boys and saved the day, and Artie, Leech, and Taki returned to St. Simons to continue their studies.

The two moppets were eventually captured by Marrow and her Gene Nation and subsequently rescued by Generation X. Skin and Chamber helped the boys build a treehouse in the school’s biodome to call home. After Onslaught and the apparent death of the Fantastic Four, Franklin Richards joined them and became fast friends with the boys. They quickly assembled a motley crew including Howard the Duck, Man-Thing, and a Rigellian Recorder and jumped through dimensions to save the multiverse. Franklin eventually found his was home and the boys stayed at the school until it disbanded.

After M-Day they boys were split. Artie lost his projection powers but kept his physical deformity. Leech kept his powers and joined the 198 outside of the Xavier Institute. He found his way back to the Morlock tunnels where Masque imprisoned him for his own uses. They boys found their way back together thanks to their old buddy Franklin. At his birthday, Franklin wanted to give each of his guests a present. For Artie, he had his sister Valeria make a helmet to mimic his old powers. For both boys was a key to their new home, the Baxter Building.

Reed Richards decided that the key to the future rested with young children and enlisted Artie and Leech, as well as other young geniuses, in his new program the Future Foundation. Their goal? Solve Everything. The boys loved spending him with their friend Franklin, even if Leech was being used to covertly dampen Franklin’s reality warping powers. After the end of the universe, Artie and Leech joined their best friend Franklin and the rest of the Future Foundation and the edge of reality. Franklin had become akin to a god, recreating worlds and Franklin had Artie and Leech to be there with him.

Artie and Leech are consistently delightful and none more so than in a backup story for New Mutants Annual #7. Written by Judy Bogdanove and drawn by husband Jon, Close Encounters of the Mutant Kind is a delightful tale of Artie, Leech, and Taki getting confused for aliens and getting a new grandma. It is short, sweet, and adorable. Exactly like our two moppets. It is on Marvel Unlimited so go check it out.

Ranking

So, I love Artie and Leech. I want them to live in my spare room and go on adorable adventures and never grow up. I am not under the impression that they are particularly deep characters but they fill their role perfectly. They are better X-Factor kids than Skids, but nowhere near as good as Boom Boom. I like them more than Caliban but less than Wolfsbane. They are like Omega Red in that, they aren’t deep but they are fun. I straight up like them more than Omega Red so that places them as the new number 40 in the Xavier Files.

Bandar Judi Basket - Utah Jazz datang berkunjung ke markas tim yang juga sama-sama berasal dari Wilayah Barat yaitu Sacramento Kings. Mereka pun dapat pulang dengan bahagia setelah meraih kemenangan di kandang Sacramento Kings.

Duel dua tim dari Wilayah Barat tersaji dalam lanjutan musim reguler kompetisi NBA. Dua tim yang dipertemukan tersebut adalah Utah Jazz selaku tim tamu dan Sacramento Kings yang bertindak sebagai tim tuan rumah.

Bermain di kandangnya sendiri, Sacramento Kings ternyata masih belum dapat tampil secara maksimal. Mereka tidak dapat menyaingi permainan dengan tempo cepat yang diperagakan tim tamu yang sedang berkunjung saat itu yaitu Utah Jazz. Sacramento Kings pun harus tertinggal jauh disepanjang pertandingan hingga mencapai 18 poin dan kesulitan untuk mengejarnya sampai akhir pertandingan. Hasilnya Sacramento Kings mesti puas menanggung malu di depan hadapan para pendukungnya sendiri setelah kalah dengan skor akhir 91-98 dari Utah Jazz.

Kemenangan tandang yang diraih oleh Utah Jazz ini tidak lepas dari permainan impresif rookie mereka yaitu Donovan Mitchell. Rookie yang memenangkan ajang slam dunk contest beberapa waktu lalu itu sukses bermain apik dan menjadi top skor bagi kubu Utah Jazz setelah mencatatkan 27 poin. Selain Donovan Mitchell, Rudy Gobert yang bermain di starting lineup juga bermain cukup kompak. Pemain yang berkebangsaan Prancis ini sukses mencatatkan double-double dengan raihan 16 poin dan 12 reboundnya.

Beralih ke kubu Sacramento Kings, De'Aaron Fox dan Bogdan Bogdanovic sukses menjadi dua pemain yang bermain cukup baik pada pertandingan tersebut. De'Aaron Fox berhasil menjadi top skor di kubu Sacramento Kings setelah meraih 17 poin. Sementara itu, Bogdan Bogdanovic berhasil menyumbangkan 15 poin bagi kubu Sacramento Kings. Bandar Sabung Ayam

Bandar Judi Basket - Houston Rockets terus maju dengan kencang dalam lanjutan ajang kompetisi NBA. Tetapi Houston Rockets hampir saja tersandung pada pertandingan tersebut. Mereka meraih kemenangan ke-10 secara beruntun, setelah mengalahkan Sacramento Kings 100-91.

Seperti dikutip dati situs resmi NBA, James Harden menjadi bintang kemenangan bagi Houston Rockets dalam pertandingan yang diadakan di Toyota Center ini. Shooting guard 28 tahun ini menyumbangkan 35 poin, 28 rebound, dan sembilan assist. Clint Capela tak kalah apik dengan torehan double-double. Dia menyumbangkan 13 poin dan 11 rebound.

Sacramento Kings bukan tanpa ada perlawanan. Bogdan Bogdanovic juga sempat merepotkan kubu tuan rumah dengan raihan 20 poin, empat rebound dan lima assist.

Hasil ini menjadi kemenangan ke-10 secara beruntun yang diraih oleh Houston Rockets. Mereka pun mantap berada di puncak klasemen Wilayah Barat dengan raihan 44 kemenangan dan 13 kekalahan.

Houston Rockets terlambat panas ketika memulai permainan. Sacramento Kings secara mengejutkan sukses mengungguli Houston Rockets pada kuarter pertama 25-20.

Houston Rockets baru mulai menemukan bentuk irama permainan terbaiknya ketika memasuki kuarter dua. Houston Rockets menjaringkan 35 poin dan hanya membiarkan Sacramento Kings mencetak 20 poin.

Houston Rockets bahkan sempat memimpin dengan selisih 17 poin pada pertengahan kuarter tiga. Tetapi Sacramento Kings tidak menyerah begitu saja. Mereka terus berusaha mengejar pada kuarter empat.

Sacramento Kings sempat beberapa kali dapat memangkas jarak menjadi hanya selisih enam poin. Tapi kematangan Houston Rockets membuat mereka dapat mengamankan kemenangan.

Bandar Judi Basket - Los Angeles Lakers melanjutkan tren positif ketika menjamu perlawanan tim dari konferensi barat lainnya. Setelah menang lawan Atalanta Hawks sebelumnya, kini giliran Sacramento Kings yang jadi korban Los Angeles Lakers dalam lanjutan kompetisi NBA. Bermain dengan impresif, Los Angeles Lakers sukses memenangkan pertandingan keduanya secara beruntun di kandang sendiri.

Bermain di Staples Center, Los Angeles Lakers yang selalu didukung ribuan fansnya kembali berhadapan dengan tim dari konferensi barat, Sacramento Kings. Dengan bantuan fansnya, Los Angeles Lakers mencoba sebisa mungkin untuk bangkit dari keterpurukan mereka. Harapan mereka pun berbuah manis usai mereka mampu menjalani pertandingan tersebut dengan baik. Los Angeles Lakers mampu mendominasi jalannya laga dan akhirnya meraih kemenangan meyakinkan dari Sacramento Kings dengan skor akhir 99-86.

Kemenangan impresif Los Angeles Lakers ini tidak mungkin terjadi apabila Julius Randle tidak bermain apik. Pemain bernomor punggung 30 tersebut sukses menunjukkan kemampuan terbaiknya usai mencetak 22 poin dan 14 rebound bagi Los Angeles Lakers. Selain Julius Randle, Lonzo Ball dan Brook Lopez juga tidak kalah penting dalam menyumbangkan kontribusinya di laga ini. Lonzo Ball sendiri memang hanya mencetak 5 poin, namun ia mampu menambahkan 11 rebound, 11 assist, serta 5 steal bagi Los Angeles Lakers. Sementara itu, Brook Lopez juga mampu bermain apik dengan menambahkan 18 poin.

Beralih ke kubu Sacramento Kings, mereka sebenarnya mampu memberikan perlawanan yang cukup sengit kepada Los Angeles Lakers. Namun sayang, performa mereka di kuarter 4 tidak mampu membawa mereka untuk dapat meraih kemenangan. Bogdan Bogdanovic yang turun dari bangku cadangan berhasil menjadi top skor di kubu Sacramento Kings dengan torehan 19 poin dan 4 assist dan 2 rebound. Sementara itu, rookie De'Aaron Fox juga tidak kalah apik dalam memberikan kontribusinya bagi Sacramento Kings di laga itu. Pemain kidal yang bermain sebagai point guard tersebut mampu membukukan 15 poin bagi Sacramento Kings.
