Books 3, 9, and 27?
Thanks for asking!
3. The Boy in the Red Dress, Kristin Lambert - A murder mystery set in the Prohibition era, at a very queer speakeasy. (The titular boy is one of the main acts, and also a suspect; the main character is a gnc young woman running the speakeasy, I think for an older relative, and a friend of the boy.) I'm having a little trouble remembering details because I've read a few different mysteries set in a similar period with similar numbers of queer characters...I think this was pretty good, maybe not absolutely spectacular!
9. The Lost Ones, Ace Atkins and 27. The Shameless, Ace Atkins - these are both in the Quinn Colson series (books 2 and 9, respectively). I kind of blurbed the whole series in this post you saw; it really did consume my first couple months of 2023, I read books 6-11 back to back. In The Lost Ones, Quinn has just been elected sheriff (for the first time), and is dealing with a high school friend who may be smuggling guns to a drug gang, and also a child abuse case. In The Shameless, Atkins goes for something just a little different, and some podcasters come to town to dig up a cold case that Quinn (still, or again, sheriff) might be implicated in - and also the crime syndicate in the county is still going strong. Just another day in (fictional) Tibbehah County.
(send me a number 1 - 206, and I'll tell you about a book I read in 2023!)

Hey. Hey you.
Want to read something queer for New Years? Want to read a murder mystery? Maybe one set in gilded age New Orleans in a Speakeasy Drag Bar during the height of Prohibition?? One where maybe the body is discovered right as the ball drops on 1930? Does any of that sound like your sort of tango?
Well Boy howdy have I started a book you might like. I'm about 100 pages in so far and I took two really nice pictures of the book to use for reviews and I couldn't decide which one I liked more so you can have this one with a lame advertisement attached to it.

[Free Audiobooks] The Boy in the Red Dress by Sophie Arnoss & This Rebel Heart by Katherine Locke [YA LGBTQ+ 1920s New Orleans Mystery & YA 1950s Hungary Historical Fantasy]
The annual SYNC Summer of Listening program encouraging literacy among teens by giving away a themed weekly pair of audiobooks—usually 1 modern or non-fiction, 1 classic or drama—returns for another year, courtesy of sponsor AudioFile Magazine and participating publishers.
This 11th week's theme is “Real Life, Phenomenal Fiction”, featuring fictional characters placed into particular historical settings and events, available from Thursday July 6th through Wednesday July 12th:
The Boy in the Red Dress by Kristin Lambert, read by Sophie Amoss from Listening Library. This is a YA amateur sleuth historical murder mystery set in 1920s New Orleans during the Prohibition, where a debutante is found murdered outside of a speakeasy which caters to the local LGBTQ society, whose main drag performer becomes the prime suspect and his friend the club owner's niece must find the real culprit and clear his name.
This Rebel Heart by Katherine Locke, read by Kathleen Gati & Steven Jay Cohen from Listening Library. This is a YA historical novel with fantasy elements taken from Jewish folklore, and inspired by actual events, set in 1950s Hungary where a girl with an attachment to a magic river, whose parents were murdered by the Soviet police, is plotting her escape from the increasingly oppressive country, only to have her plans overturned when something happens to make her decide whether or not to stay and fight for the hope of revolutionary change.
The freebies are available via Overdrive's Sora service (listenable via browser on their website, or via their mobile app for iOS & Android devices). To claim them, you'll need to register on the SYNC website with a valid email address to use in a Sora account, using the setup code and directions in the instructions in SYNC's FAQ (no need to re-register if you've participated in previous years' giveaways), clicking “Borrow” to add them to your Sora library as a permanent loan. NB: if you need to free up space on your device later, follow the instructions in the FAQ to only “delete files” and DO NOT “Return” the title, which would remove your future access.
Offered worldwide through Wednesday July 12th until just before midnight Eastern Time, available via the Sora website and app. You can also browse AudioFile Magazine's planned season list to see what will be offered in the weeks ahead and if there's anything you'd especially like to get.

The latest episode of Chris Lambert's world-shifting podcast "Your Own Backyard" is so intensely vindicating to listen to. As someone who followed the trial obsessively, it's just such a relief to know the jury hated the defense attorney as much as I did.

The Boy in The Red Dress | Kristin Lambert |⭐⭐⭐⭐
read: a good example of function over form
synopsis: It's New Years Eve 1929, and a swanky party is taking place in French Quarter Speakeasy. Tensions become high when a young woman with ties to the stage performer, Marion's, past emerges and threatens to tear down her life around her. However, all that gets turned on it's head when the young woman ends up murdered in the courtyard of the bar, with the blame all to easily falling on the queer person she had a reasonably expected altercation with. My take: Like I stated in the read, the easy way to sum this book up is function over form. There is a very workable detective story here. All the pieces are in place, the characters are lovable, and the outcome wasn't something that I reasonably saw coming.
However, the form that this book takes is what's my main issue with it. The 1930s setting of the book appears more as a backdrop for the characters to participate in rather than a commentary on the time. None of the characters participate in the time, so much as they all actively rebel against it. Which makes me wonder why the author wanted to use this time period if she wanted literally none of her characters besides the villains to be period appropriate.
There are a few well-placed damages and wounds that are period appropriate, but for the most part the contention of the setting does not pair well with the contention of the story. There are a litany of OOPs that the author didn't have time to flesh out, or just didn't understand she was making. If the author had made any sort of inclination that this was going to be her intention for a good story, and we could fuck off if we didn't enjoy it, then I would have been more prepared for it and less critical overall. As a historical novel, this one just makes me purse my lips. However, as a queer novel, it is quite functional and I enjoyed it for what it was. Please don't take my nitpicking as a sign that this wasn't a good book though. I really did enjoy it, and I was glad I stuck a bookmark in it to save it for New Years Eve proper.

Things I hate about true crime:
1. When the hosts LOVE cops and the death penalty
2. When the hosts do no research and just read off of Wikipedia
3. When the hosts continously talk about how beautiful the victims are like, like???
the true crime community is the worst. t h e w o r s t.
and i say this as someone who has spent a non-insignificant amount of time lurking about in that community. i favor missing persons cases and historical crimes for transparency's sake.
i never really got that into podcasts for the reasons you've stated. i'm not here for what are generally two white dudes having commentary on just about anything let alone what are usually awful acts committed against vulnerable people.
i did listen to generation why and the missing maura murray podcast for a while and found they got hung up on the weirdest fucking things.
i don't even really care for the true crime youtubers much of the time either.
my litmus test is usually the black dahlia case and by that i mean do they treat elizabeth short like a person or do they buy the sensationalized press.
there's a few that have done good work, i think. like that in your own backyard podcast by chris lambert that led to the arrest and eventual conviction of paul flores for the death of kristin smart.
i think the charley project has done more for missing persons than people give it credit for.
the grateful doe subreddit has helped here and there i believe.
but like i followed james renner's blog that he kept about his work with the case of maura murray. i can say he did get a lot of documents released via FOIA but found his obsession with her downright weird and uncomfortable.
i cannot stand the discussion that surrounds the jon benet rasmey case.
and having watched each new big crime get it's own subreddit where it's an echo chamber of wild speculation has been nauseating. the delphi murders and gabby petito come immediately to mind. for a long time this kind of bullshit was contained to webslueths and now it's just everywhere.
ugh.
