Author's Note: look at me actually publishing something. This is once again very self-indulgent because Gyu was just so so adorable in that live and it had me in shambles. Shoutout to my sweet Cherry @shuadotcom for listening to me fawn over Mingyu when this live happened and building ideas of the scenes with me! I love you darling!

Author’s Note 2.0: LISTEN, SHORT HAIR MINGYU IS HANDSOME OKAY. I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY SOME DON’T LIKE IT ON HIM??? LIKE BRO GET YOUR EYES CHECKED. But seriously, it does kill me when I watch Gyu kinda second guess his new hairstyle. Like I know he just laughs it off most times, but I hope the self doubt doesn’t eat him up. I will die defending his short hair. idc.

“Is it bad?” You grimace as soon as Seungcheol releases you from his hug and leads you through the hall.

Cheol laughs, “well…” he stops walking to look at you, “he’s not drunk… yet. But he did get tipsy quite fast.”

“That’s cause he’s also tired,” you reasoned, “but thanks for calling me, I don’t think I’d want him to drive home by himself and—“

“Oh no no,” the leader interrupts, resuming his steps towards the dining area where you could already faintly hear your boyfriend whining, “he asked us to call you. Besides, you know that if he did get drunk, I’d force him to crash here.”

“Oh.”

“Babyyyy!” Mingyu shoots up from his seat and rushes to you with arms wife open when you surface in the room. He was beaming at the sight of you, puppy senses fully kicking in. A faint smell of alcohol and his cologne hits your nose when he bends down and engulfs you in a hug, his face nuzzling deep into your neck.

“Miss you,” he mumbles with a tight squeeze and you run your fingers through his short locks.

“Missed you too, bub. Should we get you home?”

Mingyu pulls you off him to hold you by your shoulders, his lips pursed and eyebrows scrunching, “no no, not yet. Comeeee, join usssss.”

You’re dragged by your tall boyfriend to the dining table, both Seungcheol and Jeonghan giggling but also sending you an apologetic look for the state that Mingyu is in.

“What are we doing?” You question when he offers you chopsticks and shows you all the food on the table.

“We’re celebrating Minghao’s birthday so we have to stay first, okay?” Seungcheol laughs at your boyfriend’s justification.

“Aaaand Hao is where exactly?”

Mingyu shrugs, “dunno. But that’s okay, we called him awhile ago already and we even sang for him on live. Do you want a drink?”

You reach out to stop his hands from pouring the alcohol on the glass, “no i’m good.” He looks at you intently and then decides against convincing you to drink. Instead, he sits back down and wraps his arms around your waist, sighing softly when his head rests on your shoulder.

“You okay, my love?” You ask after kissing the top of his head. “Tired?” He nods against your shoulder and hum an affirmative. “Maybe we should go—“

“Noooo,” your gentle giant whines, a full pout on his lips, making both his hyungs laugh at him.

“Okay, okay.”

“We’re still having fun… well, they’re having fun,” Mingyu gestures towards his two older members with scrunched brows.

You reach your arm up to touch his cheek, caressing his soft skin, “And you’re not?”

“They’re making fun of me.”

“We are not!” Seungcheol denies with a laugh.

“You laughed when the fans called me a potato on live.” The two boys start giggling again, recalling the conversation on the many forms of potatoes Mingyu could represent.

“I also said you were handsome with your short hair,” Cheol added, “the potato comment is just funny!”

Jeonghan, who was seated on Mingyu’s other side, now pokes at your boyfriend’s fingers before snorting with a laugh, “heh. french fries.”

Seungcheol and Jeonghan erupt in laughter much to Mingyu’s chagrin, and you yourself couldn’t help but giggle at the antics of the two boys. Mingyu crosses his arms defiantly, sulking like there’s no tomorrow.

“Oh cmon, Gyu, it’s funny!” The group’s resident trickster calls out.

“Babyyyyyy, protect meeee,” your boyfriend whines, hiding his face on your shoulder. Mingyu was no stranger to being teased by his members, and almost always, he’s a very good sport at taking it all in and staying calm and collected. But the facade easily drops the moment you’re around. He gets to be his true self, a big baby. Your big baby. Luckily for him, the boys listen to you.

“Okay, cut it out, guys,” you call, earning a smile from your boyfriend which immediately drops the next second when you say, “the potato is sad.”

“HEY!” Mingyu’s bottom lip juts out as he scowls at you, not at all impressed by your joke. You leave a kiss on his lips and he tries hard to hide the smile.

“I’m kidding, I don’t even know why they think that. You’re my puppy,” you quickly correct, cupping his cheeks and pecking his lips, “my handsome puppy.” That was enough to have your boyfriend unravel his arms and wrap them around your waist, a huge smile on his face as he leans on your shoulder. He was flustered beyond words. If there was one thing Mingyu agreed on, it’s that he was a puppy.

“You’re so whipped,” Jeonghan states the obvious and while you knew it was directed to your boyfriend, it also felt like it was a jab at you. Eitherway, neither you nor Mingyu denied it. Especially Mingyu. He was deeply in love with you and it was written all over his face.

You settle in nicely to a conversation with the boys, discussing the new cafe that just opened near the Hybe building and talking about the recent broadcast shows they’ve done for the comeback.

With each passing minute, the more Mingyu clings onto you like a koala. Mostly smiling and staring at you with lovestruck eyes that would immediately change into a silly face if you looked back at him. Eventually, his head constantly leaned on your shoulder or his face buried in your neck, relishing in the way your hand would subconciously reach up to run your fingers through his hair or scratch lightly at his scalp. You really loved his shorter hairdo, never missing a chance to compliment him about it. When he had cut his hair, he worried you’d stop running your fingers through them, which is why moments like these, even with his shorter strands, always made him sigh in content.

“What’s wrong?” You quiz when he pulls on your shirt sleeve after you laugh at one of Jeonghan’s jokes, your hands detaching from his hair to give the older member a high five. When you look at Mingyu, his eyes were even more half lidded than earlier, and the bags underneath a little more red and puffy.

“Nothin’,” he feigns but you know what he wants.

“Hmm… you sure you just don’t want my whole attention?” Mingyu scrunches his face in shock, like he’s trying to deny the way you just exposed him. But he doesn’t say anything, and instead, juts out his lower lip for his biggest pout of the night.

You decide to tease him a little bit more and roll your eyes playfully, putting your attention back to two of his brothers who were currently going through funny videos of Minghao.

Mingyu huffs loudly and tugs you closer to him, earning a giggle from you. “Okay big boy, I was only kidding, you have my attention,” he tries to maintain his sulking but fails badly when his lips quirk into a smile after you plant a kiss on them.

“I love you,” he whispers, blushing wildly at his own confession and hiding behind your shoulder blades.

“I love you too, Gyu. But can I bring you home now? You look like you’re about to fall asleep any minute.”

“Nooooo,” Mingyu whines loudly.

You were about to reason but Seungcheol beats you to it, “Mingoo, my hyung’s about to come home now. You guys have to leave soon.”

“See, baby? Cheol needs us out of the house.”

“That’s rude,” he complains, “but his hyung likes me. We can stay.”

You flash Cheol an apologetic look, letting him know you got it under control. Just then, you stand up and bend down to cup Mingyu’s face, forcing him to look at you. “Baby, we have to go. If you fall asleep on me here, you bet I won’t be carrying you home. So choose, big guy, do you want to be beside me in bed tonight? Or beside Seungch—“

“OKAY! BYE HYUNGS!” The 6 foot 2 man shoots up from his chair in full height, not even giving you enough time to process things before he’s pulling at your hand and dragging you out of the dining room, “We’re going. Thank you for the food, Coups hyung!”

“YAH!” Jeonghan scolds, “you said you would bring me home!”

I Got Bored So I Analyzed Mikey And Splinter’s Relationship, As One Does

I love rewatching the 2012series after hearing about how terrible Mikey&Splinter’s relationship is because it always leaves me so confused to the point where I have to reconsider everything the internet says and everything I believe.

What if, for a moment, we see what the episodes have to say.

One thing they make very clear is that Splinter does not see Mikey as any less intelligent than his brothers. Several times during the series, the Sensei does not hesitate to openly agree with his youngest’s statement. He holds him to standards that are equally as high as the one Splinter gives to his brothers.

“How many times have I told you not to skateboard in the lair?”

“None, Sensei.”

“I shouldn’t have to tell you!”

“No, Michelangelo, you are right.”

“I am?”

“He is?”

“We gotta take him down.”

“Yes, Michelangelo, you do.”

Beyond agreeing with him, Splinter allows his youngest to have his say when he argues with the Sensei. He doesn’t shut him down or talk over him. Even if all of his sons disagree with Mikey, Splinter will hear him out and can even be seen changing his mind.

“There is no monster more dangerous than a lack of compassion.”

“My mistake.”

“We’re doing to him what everyone else does to us! Judging him for his looks!”

“But he was fighting the Kraang, Master Splinter. It’s like you always say! The enemy of my enemy is my bro.”

“That is not exactly what I’ve said…”

“Mm. I see. You’ve made a wise decision, Michelangelo.”

Master Splinter also doesn’t doubt his abilities. He can recognize his son’s strengths and won’t hesitate to put them to good use.

“When he awakens, Michelangelo, you must find a way to befriend him.”

“No problemo.”

The Sensei doesn’t challenge Mikey any harder than he challenges his brothers. Splinter never makes him out to be inferior when he’s teaching him something compared to them.

“Michelangelo. Why did you give up so easily?”

“There was nothing I could do.”

“There is always something you can do. Observe.”

“The key is to unbalance your opponent.”

“But how?”

“However you can. For example…”

While he doesn’t exactly understand how his mind works, he comprehends that his unique way of learning is to be nurtured and molded. He knows that some of his quirks are gifts to be appreciated. He even goes as far as using Mikey’s natural skill as an example of how to fight in order to instruct his brother.

“The nunchaku because… Um, they are perfect for you!”

“I just don’t understand how you can fight without thinking.”

“Observe… You see? Mikey does not think.”

“Thank you~”

“You must find the space between your thoughts and learn to live there. That’s what Michelangelo does.”

Mikey idolizes his sensei, but not quite to Leo’s extent. He takes in all the lessons that resígnate with him to heart, even to the point that he can quote them back to his father and brothers. (Revisit: “But he was fighting the Kraang, Master Splinter. It’s like you always say! The enemy of my enemy is my bro.”) Splinter spends a good amount of the show teaching lessons, such as don’t judge those who are different from you, peace is better than war, and a lack of compassion is the true monster. Mikey is consistently seen prompting these ideals in everything that he does, consciously or unconsciously mimicking his father.

“Raphael! Clearly, April is upset.”

“Yeah, dude, that’s so insensitive.”

“Yeah, that’s all good, but like Master Splinter would say, we must accept the hand that the universe has dealt usssss.”

They recognize cues from one another without anything being said. Reading their tones and expressions with ease, catching things that others in the room don’t notice, at least, not yet.

“You okay, Sensei?”

“Forgive me… My thoughts are… Elsewhere, Michelangelo.”

“Well, yeah. Cause old people never care how they look. Or smell.”

*sus Sensei squint*

*awkward laugh* *whistling*

“My son. I sense there is something you’d like to tell us.”

There are even times when they are in sync. A favorite example would be when Mikey throws down a smoke bomb and Splinter reappears in the same instance. It may be played off as a joke, but this is crack that the show takes very seriously.

“This is serious. I better get Splinter.”

“Um, we don’t really need-”

“Michelangelo said you wanted to see me?”

The two of them don’t have a lot of one-on-one screen time, but I often think that this isn’t because Splinter is outright ignoring his youngest. In fact, this is because, despite not being “as smart” as his brothers, he doesn’t need to give Mikey as much schooling as the rest of them. Leo seeks him out for advice, Raph needs help to mold his temper and impulsive nature, and Donnie needs to learn how calm his anxieties or how to react to social situations.

Mikey vibes with the world and follows his brothers’ leads. His mistakes are theirs and the rules that he follows are based off Sensei’s teaching. He’s smart in his own way, he has the instinct and the skills to fight and defend himself and his brothers, and he doesn’t need Master Splinter looking over his shoulder all the time.

He’s not useless. In some ways, he’s just a daddy’s boy.

Maybe the memory in Requiem wasn’t simply lazy writing.

Maybe, to him, this was an unspoken moment where Splinter acknowledges that and more.

This Week in BL - It’s My Birthday!

April 2023 Wk 4

Being a highly subjective assessment of one tiny corner of the interwebs. Organized by which ones (in each category) I’m enjoying most.

Ongoing Series - Thai

Step By Step (Thai Tues WeTV & Gaga) ep 2 of 10 (MDL says 12, but Gaga says 10) - Baby made a friend! Yay. I hope they stay friends. Up looks so good. Also, drama with exes! Excellent. This is awful grown up for a BL, esp a pulp. I think it may be more just a gay office romance than BL, but I love it no matter what.

La Pluie (Sat iQIYI) ep 1 of 10 - I love it. Strange premise to get at the fated mates trope but it stars one of my top picks to get his own BL. Been waiting since TT2 for this boy to feature. Tai is cute. It’s good. Except the singing. But we can’t have it all.

Our Skyy 2 (Star in My Mind) eps 3-4 - Dao is THE MOST SPOILED. But clearly Kluen prefers it that way. This was cute, but frankly a little bit boring. Kluen is clearly Thai for whipped. 8/10

Future (Thai Sun YouTube & Gaga) ep 5 of 6 - they added an additional ep because, why not? It’s a soap not a story, it doesn’t matter. MOAR softness for usssss! Drama llama boys continue to be overdramatic to the point of melodramatic to the point of ludicrous-dramatic.

Pastsenger (Thai Weds Gaga) ep 8 of 12 eps - This is not as good as My Engineer but Marc makes for a much better pair with Cooper. It’s still not great but hey… and then HE PICKED UP A GUITAR. NOOOOOO!!!!!

A Boss and a Babe (Fri YouTube) ep 9 of 12 - Is that a character in a GMMTV show actually trying to communicate? Say it isn’t so! Did you notice in order to calm Cher down Gun dropped to pom to put them on a more equal footing? Sweet. Cher is a tiny idiot for taking the blame for some random other coworker. Why? Omg this show.

The Promise (Thai Weds YT & WeTV) ep 6 of 10 - So it was a real serious total kiss kiss with both very drunk. And that’s why he ran? Sigh. This show sucks. How can we root for this couple especially when the faen fatal (Boss) is THAT HOT and so sweet. (To be fair I can’t decide if I want Boss or his outfits more). Phu should just not come back, who needs him? So they really are going to just keep drawing this one premise out the whole show?

Tin Tam Jai (Tues Gaga & iQIYI) ep 9 of 10 - yawn

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Our Dining Table AKA Bokura no Shokutaku (Japan Thurs Gaga) ep 4 of 10 - They are cutest EVER - charming and awkward and sweet. I love the way the state of the food is used as an illustration for the state of the emotions of the characters. The loneliness of heating up a solitary meal bought from a convenience store in the microwave. The joy of memory of shared meals. What a lovely show.

The Eighth Sense (Korea Weds Viki) eps 9-10fin - To be honest, I was dreading this one. JH is such a first-time love bebe. I liked how realistic everybody’s behavior was to the university age bracket. We even got some proper boyfriends phase which is too damn cute for words. I do not think that JW should have made up with his evil friend. I love the way JW’s shoulders relax the moment he sees JH. This was really good show...

One of the longest BLs Korea has given us and (like Blueming) it feels more atmospheric gay coming of age romance than strictly BL. It’s got a bit of an age gap, country boy/city boy, stellar acting, complex characters, and leads with good chemistry and tension. It’s a bit chewy and sticky and less perfect than most KBLs (do I detect a touch of Taiwan?). This one deployed BL tropes (messy eater, shoulder sleep, protective seme, there’s even some hyung-slinging) but front loaded them, with tons angst driving the 2nd half. This isn’t in the KBL bubble, there’s sharp edges and lots of triggers. For a BL the darkness of the content left me feeling unsettled but it did have a glorious ending and that counts for a lot. 9/10 HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Happy Merry Ending (Korea Thurs Gaga) eps 1-2 of 8 - No shade (ha!) but I do think Leo would have been better in the role of the singer (SJ) but I’m okay with Dongwon. JH is a nice flirty bit of sunshine. SJ is clearly the most anxiety-riddled socially awkward broken baby evers. I’m not sure about this kinda angst, it’s not really my thing especially on the back of The Eighth Sense. Look, I’ve never been one for a fixer-upper. We shall see, I guess? Star Hunter dropped all their trailers for 2023 on their YT channel. Bit late in the year IMHO. Nothing really stuck out.

Big Dragon the movie = more of the same

True Moon = yet another loosely disguised attempt at the 2 Moons franchise?

Flirt Milk = standard pulp fodder, but they are cute

Acadex = The Eclipse + Destiny Seeker + Harry Potter 4 + The CW, as a movie that may not be BL

Sunset Vibes = Big Dragon pair as a one night stand but “uh-oh he’s my boss!” I’m game. Maybe it’ll have a better story? Maybe it will have a plot? Maybe... oh who am I kidding. It’ll be high heat and that’s about all we can hope for.

City of Stars AKA Fueangnakorn = An actor falls in love with a programmer and the narrative intends to “explore the ramifications of being public figure in the social network era who must endure critics, bullying, and defamation.” Looks like another Lovely Writer/Call It What You Want sort of thing.

The biggest shocker is how few they fielded of their original BL stable.

Love Senior = SOTUS but make it GL (I’m not mad about this one, it’s about flipping time. But it’s GL so I won’t track it, although I will watch it.)

Hi! I have been interested in learning how to make sewn in hardcover books, but whenever I look for guides, they are people just making themselves a sketchbook with not a full on cloth bound hardcover, etc.

Additionally - when trying to find what are good beginner supplies am struggling to find what is recommended. Book boards on Amazon that had reviews saying it was too flimsy... bookbinding kits online that literally have the same waxed thread as leatherworking kits etc,, no idea where to find unwanted linen thread....

There was a gentlemen who teaches bookbinding at sca events id reached out to, but hadn't heard anything back because I'm sure his schedule has been busy.

I know this is a huge ask, but do you have any books or websites or guides you suggest for learning any of these things and for learning what to search for? If these things are listed in a tag or faq, I am sorry I didn't see them when I did a cursory search of your blog after I saw your bookbinding critique post that petermorwood reblogged

YES HELLO JOIN USSSSS!! reject the tyranny of Big Book*!!!

* in the "publishing industry" sense, not in the sense of binding a really thicc boi (which is both allowed and encouraged)

my main recommendation is to check out @renegadepublishing's resource links page (and join the discord if that's your vibe!) and in particular @armoredsuperheavy's tutorial for doing a basic case-bound hardcover, which is how i bound my first hardcover :3 or if video tutorials are more your jam, people on the discord really like DAS bookbinding's youtube channel. also! if you ever happen find yourself in san francisco, definitely take a couple hours to check out the bookbinding museum -- they have a bunch of examples of different binding techniques you can hold in your sweaty little hands and stare at until their secrets are revealed to you >:)

i won't certify that these are good supplies recommendations For Beginners but here's what i use:

lineco (acid-free) book glue you can find on amazon, but i also really like glue stick and double-sided tape formats which are less messy. i love these silicone brushes for applying glue because you literally don't have to wash them you just let the glue dry and then peel it off later. very satisfying

lineco's little packages of linen tape are so fucking overpriced :/ i got a couple rolls from burnleigh & trowbridge a while back and it's literally exactly the same stuff but way cheaper per unit length (or if you don't want a whole roll you can buy it by the yard)

you can also get unwaxed linen thread and beeswax off burnleigh & trowbridge but i ran out and switched back to cheapo prewaxed linen thread (it works equally well!). (i assume "unwanted linen thread" was a typo for "unwaxed linen thread" but if you are using linen thread you absolutely want to wax it -- otherwise it is Badly Behaved)

i bought linen cord (not needed for just A Basic Hardcover but fun if you want to experiment with medieval cord bindings) from talas (which is a specialized bookbinding website that also sells bookcloth and stuff)

this is a nice little beginner kit that comes with an awl, a bone folder, and a punching cradle that will fit half-letter books (it's annoying how you have to constantly screw and unscrew the little clamping screws but it IS functional). for bigger stuff i also have this punching cradle (i had to glue some sacrificial board strips to the bottom to actually get enough room for the awl to punch a decent sized hole, which is annoying). please send a signal flare if you find a Secret Good Punching Cradle...

i actually don't really like any of the book boards i've used so far either, which is maybe because i've been buying cheap crap off amazon (most recently this, which was far too thin; i always wind up gluing two pieces in a stack and then it always curls up even though i put it in the clamp and i Don't Like That). i plan to experiment with museum board soon and i will attempt to keep everyone updated on how that goes

also not a Beginner Supply but this is the beast i refer to as Madame la Guillotine and i love her so so much

wrt book clamping, i am VERY NEARLY DONE making a fancy-ish wood clamp with my dad, but all of my bookbinding has been done with a combination of scrap plywood, random thin hardcover books i don't like, woodworking clamps, and just leaving things under a heavy textbook while the glue dries (my go-to is CLRS)

Online/Offline [C.S] - two | fried chicken and baby pictures

“I think this is it?” Yeosang said as he pulled another box off the shelf in his closet, trying not to knock some of the more precariously placed items on top of himself.

“You think?”

He laughed softly as he handed the box over to you.

“Your mom really sent like, every picture she could.”

“I think she was cleaning at the time.”

“I thought parents normally like to keep these kinds of things.”

“Yeah, I don’t know. Maybe they’re thinking of downsizing.”

“Aww, I guess that makes sense since you live here now. There’s gotta be a lot of memories in these boxes.”

He nodded as you brought the box over to the coffee table and set it down with the other three.

“Are any of them labeled?”

“Maybe?”

You looked at him, seriously.

“Ahh, I remember that face.”

You chuckled. “You were on the receiving end of it a lot, back in the day.”

He laughed softly and opened the beers on the table for the both of you. He passed you yours and then held his up for a toast. You followed suit.

“To… a new life in a new city.” He offered.

“To new beginnings and… something, I don’t know.”

He laughed.

You thought a second. “To getting everything put away in a timely manner.”

“Hear, hear.”

“There, there.”

You clinked your bottles together and took a sip.

“Now,” you said as you slapped your hands against your thighs and surveyed all the boxes. “Which should we open first?”

Almost two hours later and a few more beers in, all three boxes had been opened; and strewn all over the coffee table and floor in a way not dissimilar to the chaos the two of you caused when you were the ages you were in theose pictures.

“Oh my god, look at usssss,” you slurred as you pulled a picture out. “We were dressed up for something at school, right?”

The two of you - adorable, chubby-cheeked kids with the biggest smiles across both your faces - were holding hands as you wore smocks decorated to make you look like frogs with a kind of brimless cap hat with a lily pad on top of it.

“What was this?” Yeosang laughed as he took it from you. “I don’t remember this.”

“Neither do I.” You took a sip of your beer.

He flipped the picture over. “It just has the date on the back.”

“I love your mom and all, but she’s not very good at organizing things.”

“Well… yeah.”

“Pbbfft!” You laughed and covered your mouth.

Yeosang smiled. “Not on the pictures, huh?”

“I’m sorry. I didn’t think you’d admit it.”

Yeosang chuckled to himself as he looked at the picture. “I love her too… but yeah, my dad has always been better organized out of the two of them.”

“Well, she is an artist. I suppose she has an excuse.”

“Yeah.… at least it has a date.”

Yeosang went quiet as he continued to stare at the picture. You went back to the box to pull some more out.

There was an early organization attempt that seemed to lose heart proportionate to the amount of alcohol the two of you consumed. Kang Yeosangs from every age staring out of professional pictures, glossy computer-printed paper, and polaroids vaguely organized into piles by the picture type and how old he looked in them. With no labels it was much more difficult than either of you anticipated: it was plainly evident why Yeosang’s mom had just given him the boxes instead of putting them into albums first.

You looked at a picture of Yeosang, probably in early high school, after his family had moved away from the town you both grew up in. He was standing next to another boy his age, a little shorter than him, with dark hair and a mole under his left eye.

“I know what it is!”

Your attention snapped up to Yeosang, and you dropped the picture.

“I figured it out,” he waved the picture in your face at you in triumph.

You laughed, picked up the picture you dropped, and put it back in the box with the others. Not that it made the mess any cleaner than it was. “What was it?”

He held out the picture for you to take and you did.

“It’s the day we did that environmental pageant thing.”

“The what?” You looked at the picture again.

“Some of the older grades went to the aquarium or the zoo, and we went to that pond that was right near the school?”

“Aww, what the fuck? Why didn’t we go to the aquarium? What a crock.”

Yeosang laughed and sipped his beer. “We sang a song about frogs or something. and the dance as like--” he put his drink down and gestured hopping like a frog, “ribbit, ribbit, the water is clean. Ribbit, ribbit… something else that rhymes with -een.

You snorted a laugh as you looked at the picture. “Well, that was cute at least. Maybe my dad took a video.”

“Ohh, that’d be cool. I bet we were cute as hell.”

“Maybe you cried in it,” you looked over at him under your raised eyebrow.

“I didn’t cry in-- you always say I cried in things. It was one time!”

You cackled.

He looked at you angrily. Or at least, he tried. Until he started laughing.

“You cried at three different school pageants. That I can remember.”

He wiped a tear from his eye. “I know, I honestly forgot.”

“You were such a sensitive kid back then.”

“Yeah.”

“You don’t seem like it now, though.” “No?”

“No, you seem different.”

“Well, the last time we saw each other was when we were ten.”

“Very true.”

Yeosang swirled his beer around in the bottle for a moment as he mused to himself. “Umm, how was it after I left?”

“Mmm, the classes or the other kids?”

“Both I guess.”

“I was stuck with the terror triplets all throughout school.”

“Into high school as well?”

You nodded. “The whole thing.”

“Shit, I’m sorry.”

“It’s whatever. They all hated me because I was friends with you anyway. If you were still there it probably would have just made it worse.”

“Sorry.”

“I’m going to tell you: that’s the alcohol talking. You have nothing to be sorry for.”

Yeosang thought for a moment. “They-- I wouldn’t have been friends with them anyway! They were so mean! Even to me.”

You laughed. “One of them, was it Goeun? I think it was Goeun. Remember when she tripped you when we were like… seven? And tried to pull like a reverse Prince Charming thing on you?”

“Oh GOD.”

“She was brave at least.”

“All of their families had so much money, I couldn’t figure out what they wanted with me.”

“You were a cute kid, Yeo. They wanted to make you their boyfriend,” you sang.

His eyes went wide and he put his face in his hands and yelled quietly.

“I wonder what the other two would have done if one of them managed to land you.”

“Kill each other?”

“HA! Maybe. I wouldn’t put it past them… want to know what they’re doing now?”

“WHY do you know what they’re doing?”

“They’re all social media oversharers.”

Yeosang shook his head with a laugh.

“So, Junghee actually started being nicer to me in senior year. It turned out that she got over you and got a boyfriend, and Goeun and Baram got pissed about it. They sort of ostracized her from the group after that.”

“Wow, so she came crawling to you? What’d you say?”

“She apologized and said that she felt bad the whole time. I’m not sure if I really believed her, but like…I didn’t care too much either? We talked a little bit and she was actually pretty nice after Goeun and Baram weren’t making her decisions for her anymore. She travels a lot now, I think she’s living in the US.”

Yeosang nodded. “And the other two?”

“Both married.”

“What? Who would marry them?”

You laughed at his reaction. “I’ve never met them, but they look like that kind of salaryman who stays way too late at the office so they can try and get some promotion that’s never coming?” You gestured, asking if he’d ever seen the type.

He nodded.

“Like that. They both have babies and they’re both Mommy Bloggers with ‘perfect lives.’” Your fingers dug through the air in overly aggressive sarcastic quotes as you rolled your eyes. You stuck your tongue out and made a retching noise.

“Holy shit.”

“Mhm,” you nodded. “And here we are, looking through baby pictures, drinking beer, and we have fried chicken on the way.” You raised your beer.

He raised his as well and clinked it against yours. “We’re thriving.”

You cackled.
