@samemiistakes | Setting: Gas Station near 506 Lenox Ave | Local Time: 00:21 | TW: drug abuse mention
Leaning against the wall of the gas station, Max practically inhaled his cigarette. Smoking was a habit he never really attempted to quit, but it had never gotten out of hand, anyway, so there was nothing to really worry about. Talking about habits to worry about: Max silently snorted to himself, even though he didn't think the situation was funny at all. His left hand, which wasn't holding the cigarette, was trembling slightly, his right hand's knuckles were bruised, just like his lower bottom lip and his left eye.
Max wasn't proud of how easily he fell back into his addiction around the holiday's, but it was almost Christmas Eve and the thought of spending the day alone with his father was eating him up from the inside. Lifting his head, looking around for Gabriel, Max tried to tune out the Christmas Songs the station was playing silently, but loud enough for him to hear them outside. His money already balled up in his fist and his gun pushed into his belt beneath his hoodie just in case, the young man impatiently shuffled his feet on the ground.

In April this year we shared Stephen's memories of and love for his brother Paul who died too young at age 22 back in 1981.
For two years Stephen has been sharing his stories and memories of what he and Paul experienced growing up as brothers.  Stephen is an excellent writer and I suggest you take a look at his stories on https://www.ancientfaces.com/person/paul-sardi-birth-1958-death-1981-united-states/7277083#discussion
As a result of Stephen sharing, Paul's close childhood friend recently found the biography and shared his own memories of growing up together at Lenox Ave. Elementary School.  In response, Stephen says "Thank you for your friendship with my brother. Whenever I think of our early years growing up, I remember your being there, and making things all the more interesting and fun.", (and thank you for your contributions to Paul's biography)  "that shed light on the distant past from a first-hand perspective".
By sharing our memories, family stories, and photos about our loved ones and ancestors, we remember the people important to us, and together discover more.

As the holidays arrive, and I have been spending more time with my family, I’ve found myself thinking more about my own childhood.
Growing up in NYC in the 1970s was idyllic in a lot of ways. I was fortunate to catch the tail-end of Harlem (where I was born) when it was still a thriving, all-Black community. Rather than feeling segregated, the community felt self-sufficient. I remember being a young boy, walking up and down Lenox Avenue with my parents on the weekends. Errands took all afternoon, stops for conversations included!
We moved to the Upper West Side to an integrated, rent-controlled apartment in 1968. From my 18th floor bedroom window, which faced north up Columbus Ave., I remember looking out into a sea of other high-rise apartments that spanned the area for as far as you could see. Looking at the windows of light, I felt a sense of oneness among all of the lives that existed in all of those apartments. My time here inspired my 2012 album “Upper West Side Story.”
I cannot imagine a more perfect childhood, and I am incredibly grateful I had the opportunities I did, thanks in large part to my local community, family, and friends. As the holiday season presses on, I suggest you remember to cherish every moment of your journey from pre-teen to present day.
