Para distrair a atenção de Padovic, Baltar sugere ao professor que contrate a nova arquivista do convento, Piedade, como sua assistente. Hélène anda ressentida por ver o marido mais interessado pelas pesquisas do que por ela. A presença da jovem e bonita Piedade agrava ainda mais a situação e tanto serve para as manipulações do diabólico Baltar como completa os hábeis enredos de Hélène.
