Zeller was transformed by his military experience in World War I. As his sentiments turned, he began producing antimilitary graphics and after the war joined the revolutionary Soldiers’ Council. Zeller’s portfolio Revolutionszeit portrays the revolution that occurred in Germany during 1918 and 1919. Instead of focusing on individual personalities, however, Zeller presents the anonymous populace led by a revolutionary “type,” implying that the nameless are the true shapers of historical events.

Art Twitter's being an ass about "tracing" again. If you're lifting another artist's work, because you can't think of your own images, that's horseshit. Don't do that. Generally, I advise against using other comics/ illustrations as references if you're doing comics/illustration. Don't build your body of work on the Frankensteined work of others. If you're doing it for practice or because you felt like recreating another artist's work, say so. Credit is due. Otherwise, tracing references is fine.

Tracing this Magnus Zeller painting really busted some art block for me.

Some days I can nail a gesture or a pose from scratch, some days it takes an hour to get it right on my own.

If that still looks like hell, I'll draw from a visual references. If those aren't getting the job done, I'm a big fan of tracing.

For me, that usually means:

taking my own reference photos because I'm picky and impatient

popping that into my drawing program

reducing it to like 30% opacity

blue-lining over that to define key reference points

deleting the reference image

15%-ing those blue lines

generating a more refined sketch from those blue-lines

final linework gets drawn on top of that

The point is abstraction and making sure the final image looks like your natural freehand. Tracing a reference isn't cheating, lazy, or amateurish. If the choice is bogging yourself down on a deeply frustrating visual problem, or getting the work on the page by tracing a reference, then trace away.

If it's dumb but it works, then it ain't dumb.
