I'm here, crawling out of my little hole to say that I am currently in Melbourne (in fact, I've been in Oz for almost 6 months y'all, it's been a wild year), so guess who's gonna look up filming locations for The Pacific and sob about walking the same ground as not only Robert Leckie, but also my boy James Badge Dale and the rest of the cast and crew?

All-Nighter
Robert Leckie x Writer! Reader
Tumblr media
Summary: you’re working late on a project and your eager boyfriend is being annoying. But also kinda sweet.
Notes: fluffy, a little suggestive I guess
Word count: 900
I wrote another sentence, realizing two seconds later that I hated it just as much as the rest of them. I sunk back into the chair with a groan, fingers rubbing my face and my eyelids. I briefly glanced at the clock I’d put on the table right next to my typewriter.
Almost Midnight? Was that right? I shook my head, dispelling the thought instantly. I needed to focus on the task at hand and nothing else.
Not long after my fingers were back on the keyboard again, I heard the light sound of steps behind me.
“Still not done?” the voice of my newly acquired “roommate” asked.
“If you’ve come here to make fun of me, you can go right back where you came from” I didn't take my eyes off the page, continuing to write, still in search of that rare, magical feeling when the words just seem to flew directly out of my brain.
He chuckled: “Not exactly”. He stepped closer until I could sense that he was standing right behind my chair.
“It’s getting very late, I thought you might use a break” He leaned down slowly started leaving a trail of kisses on the side of my neck, getting dangerously close to the collarbone.
“No, thank you” I gently pushed his head away with my hand, earning a disappointed groan from him.
“Come on, you’ve been sitting here for hours… as your boyfriend, I think I have a the right to be concerned about your well being” He protested.
I finally stopped typing and glanced up at him in disbelief, only to find him staring back down at me, his hands now coming to rest on my shoulders.
“Oh sure, I’m sure it’s all selfless worrying about my health on your part and you’re getting absolutely nothing out this” I crossed my arms, raising an eyebrow.
“Well, can a fully selfless act really exist after all?” He rebutted, clearly looking pretty satisfied with his own defense.
“Don’t get philosophical with me Leckie, you know that’s a battle you cannot win” I glared at him warningly.
He gave a hearty laugh. “It’s definitely too late for that” and then the cheeky look on his face was back, “Especially since my plans involve much better ways to spend our time”
Once again I completely ignored his attempts of seduction. “Our time? You mean my time. Tell me, how would you feel if you were running late on a really important article and I barged into the room wasting your precious time?”
“I’m not sure I’ve actually ever had that problem my-” He realized his mistake right before finishing the sentence, his eyes widening, but it was too late.
I abruptly stood up. “Out. Right now.” I began pushing him towards the door with all the strength I could muster.
“Wait, I didn’t mean to say…”
“Oh, save it, I know exactly what you meant, mr. Highly Successful Author Who Can Do No Wrong” The sarcasm was now dripping from my tone.
He’d been backing away, clearly allowing himself to be pushed as to not to anger me any further, but right at the end he stopped, grabbed my wrists and gently pushed them away.
“Please, I’m sorry, that was very insensitive of me.” He looked at me straight in the eyes and I could see please don’t hate me written all over his own.
“You’re an amazing writer and you’re absolutely going to finish this in time, despite the interferences of your idiot boyfriend” He stated softly but firmly, like a fact.
I could tell that his apology was genuine and my rage came to a halt for the moment. “That’s much better” I conceded, still processing the whole thing.
“It is?” His lips curved in an hopeful smile.
“Yeah.” I felt my body relax, the tension dissipating as quickly as it had accumulated, and I smiled back “Thank you for saying all that.”
“It’s true” He said with a shrug of his shoulders, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
“Alright. But you’re still getting out of this room and you’re not allowed to open that door for the next 30 minutes” I warned him. “Or I swear to god all you get to do tonight is sleep. Possibly on the couch.”
I saw his mouth instinctively open to protest (his most natural reaction to everything) or say something else, but he managed to control himself, confronted with the seriousness of his situation: “Yes, ma’am”
“Oh, and…Lucky? On more thing” Both my tone and expression had softened considerably and he smiled at the nickname.
“Yes?”
Without a warning, I suddenly pulled him down by his shirt and kissed him hard, locking his lips on mine and tangling both hands in his hair to pull him impossibly closer and not allow him any escape.
When we finally broke off the kiss, his eyes were closed and he was panting, his forehead resting against mine.
A rebellious curl hung in front of his eyes as I backed away and I didn't miss the opportunity to move it aside with my fingers, delicately.
“See you in half an hour” I smirked.

Golda Slept Here by Suad Amiry
The Trial of Henry Kissinger by Christopher Hitchens
A Power Unbound by Freya Marske
below the cut, some writeups for my faves:
Wolf Hall - it's not news but Hilary Mantel is among the best to ever do characterization in just a few sentences
The Future Is Disabled - emerging from the rage & fear of being disabled during COVID lakshmi piepzna-samarasinha never lets us forget the joys of disabled community
Libraries and Homelessness - this is partly a spite pick bc i HATED ryan dowd’s book so much. this is an empathetic and practical guide to providing services to unhoused patrons that encourages community partnership, is full of examples, and isn’t miserably condescending!
Underland - i liked this so much i wrote a cave scene in timkon road trip fic. The texture of the prose is delicious!
The Stars Undying - i don’t actually know the story of antony and cleopatra very well but this was a very tasty space opera with messy messy characters
The Lathe of Heaven - still thinking about this 7 months later! Every year I read a LeGuin and it knocks me on my ass for the rest of the year. The opening scene is one of the best things I’ve ever read. (I liked The Dispossessed very very much but I loved Lathe.)
Mimicking of Known Successes - delightful noir-flavored scifi, great worldbuilding and equally great exes.
Some Desperate Glory - do you ever leave a cult against your will, and also you’re the worst girl in the world! This one is for all the clementine kesh fans. Breakneck.
The Haunting of Hill House - this was a great year for me to read books written 50+ years ago. I tweeted about it when i read it but ooghhghhgh this book is devastating. What if you got everything you ever wanted and finally felt at home and everyone called it evil.
Where the Line is Drawn - this was my second book by Shehadeh and it never shies away from the thorniness and hurt inherent in human relationships formed amidst occupation. Really, really excellent.
Kissinger’s Shadow - concisely unravels the ways Kissinger’s legacy shapes every part of US foreign policy you’ve ever heard of. Also really gets at the paranoid ouroboros of Kissinger’s personal philosophy.
Golda Slept Here - the legacy of several Palestinian houses, told through an eclectic mix of personal narratives, photographs, and occasional poetry. Funny and angry and heartbreaking.

Something you’re proud of yourself for?
I went to an alumni event over the weekend for a big club I used to be a part of at my university, and heard from a few people that I made them feel welcome and included in the group when they first got there. A few "you probably don't remember this, but..." It was really fucking nice.

— THE PACIFIC PREFERENCE
WHEN THEY FIND OUT YOU HAVE A CRUSH ON THEM
Characters: Eugene Sledge, Snafu Shelton, Bob Leckie, Sidney Phillips, Hoosier Smith, Hillbilly Jones + Captain “Ack-Ack” Haldane
Tags: —
A/N: *sighs* men. let me know if you guys want a part 2 with other characters from the pacific (e.g. john basilone, burgin, jay de l’eau, bill leyden, runner, chuckler etc)!!! pls enjoy and leave a like/reblog/feedback <33 ^.^ // [ko-fi] [commissions] / this was inspired by my love @littlemissvincentvega from this post <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
EUGENE SLEDGE “SLEDGEHAMMER” —
He’s flustered, but he doesn’t do anything about it. Eugene’s frail and bookish, so he’s too shy to pursue you.
Whenever you walk past him, he has to get a good look of you, maybe just a crumb of your face, before keeping his head down.
Sid would tease him and never let it go.
“Give me a break, you ol’ greaser—”
“Hey, I’m just sayin’. The missus needs a friend!”
and Snafu would just make remarks about you, much to Eugene’s annoyance and a sense of motivation to make a move before someone else does.
Eugene is confident that he would get to ask you out some day, because he was raised to be kind and a gentleman. Time will tell.
Tumblr media
MERRIELL “SNAFU” SHELTON —
Learning about your crush on him boosts his ego and is way too cocky about it.
“What did I tell ya? Getting to the likes of Y/N is like discovering a goldmine. I’m gonna reel them in.”
Snafu obviously bothers you during the day by flirting with you, trying to get your attention because he likes getting attention.
He doesn’t leave pleasant remarks at first, but he goes straight down to business.
“So, doll. Dinner? Movie? Picnic under the stars? How ‘bout I take you to the back of the train and you can show me your caboose? ;)”
Snafu will eventually learn to be more respectful. But at least he’s polite when he tries to talk and hang out with you more.
Tumblr media
ROBERT “BOB” LECKIE —
This man is charming. He managed to win over Stella’s family over dinner, so he could do the same with you.
He won’t stop thinking about you. But he’ll get a bit insecure and overthink about other irrelevant things.
“I wonder what you don’t like about me?”
His friends from How Company make fun of him, reading out loud the letters you wrote to him.
He shows up to your house unexpectedly, all fresh and clean, in uniform, and he asks you out for dinner.
Deep down, he’s nervous af - he’s overthinking if it doesn’t work out if you two ever start dating.
When he takes you out you can tell he’s a nervous wreck and he doesn’t know where else to go from there, but you assure him he’s doing fine.
Tumblr media
SIDNEY “SID” PHILLIPS —
Sid is already getting along with you, so nothing really changes when he finds out you have a crush on him. If anything, it brings the two of you closer.
He likes to talk to you about anything, and he’ll eventually bring up taking you out for dinner or a picnic under the stars.
Sid will tell you all about Eugene, life in Mobile, baseball, the rotting coconuts in Pavuvu, anything to keep you around.
“Here, y/n. How about I drop you home? I can squeeze you in on my bike!”
He’s surprised that he’s not as nervous when you two become more than friends.
Sid realizes he’s falling for you hard and it’s gonna kill him once he’s sent off to fight again.
Tumblr media
BILL “HOOSIER” SMITH —
This cocky little shit
When Hoosier confronts you about it, he has a big smirk on his face.
“A lil’ bird told me you got your eyes on me.” (The lil’ bird in question was Chuckler.......)
He wastes NO time asking you out. And of course, you accept.
If you smoke, he offers you a cigarette from his pack.
Hoosier is a goofball and he never fails to make you laugh when you two are bonding together.
He’ll stuff cigarettes up his nostrils and once he finally takes you out, let’s say at a fancy restaurant, he’ll stuff the chopsticks up his nostrils. Anything to hear that laugh of yours.
Tumblr media
1ST LT. EDDIE “HILLBILLY” JONES —
He’s flattered, all right.
Even from the dungarees and dirt, he’s known for having a clean, fresh and handsome appearance, according to Sledge’s book.
Hillbilly’s a gentleman. If he were to take you out sometime, he’d make you feel like there’s no other person in his life but you.
Ack-Ack pushes him to make a move. He assures him that it wouldn’t hurt to leave some room for a little bit of bonding.
“I know I’m serious when I need to be serious, but I’m a helpless disciple saved by Christ when I found out about you.”
So of course, he’s gonna come in with his guitar and play you a song to win you over.
Tumblr media
CAPTAIN ANDREW “ACK-ACK” HALDANE —
Of course, of all people, you develop feelings for the skipper.
Since he’s a good leader who pulls everyone together during the war, you could understand why you like him. He’s also a very sweet guy.
The thing is, he already knows. You’re too shy to even confess your feelings to him in person or in letters, anonymously or not. In fact, no one even told the skipper about it and nobody needed to. He just knows. A good captain is always observant.
You two are alone for a moment, and his casual, calm and friendly tone manages to help you feel more comfortable and less nervous.
He gives you one of the blankets his dad made for everyone. He wraps it around you at night when you’re feeling cold or afraid.

Note
1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 15, 17, 20, 26, 32, 44, 46 (weird or genre-defying books), 47, 50
Thank you for so many prompts!! This was so fun to do and now it is so long. I hope it's as good to read as it was to write out!
1) Name the best book you've read so far this year: I answered Aftermarket Afterlife by Seanan McGuire to digs just a moment ago, but I'm glad you asked too, because honorable mention goes to Inheritance by Nora Roberts. It came out in November, not technically 2024, but time is fake and 2024 is just beginning anyway, so I'm counting it. Inheritance starts pretty slow and for a bit I was wondering how it was going to manage a satisfying resolution, and then I realized she was doing something new! (unfair. she's been building to this since 2015, it's just that now is when it's starting to really click with me) Instead of a trilogy with three couples whose romance arcs each get centered in their own book, this is going to be a trilogy focusing on unraveling the family curse/haunting, with the four main characters growing tighter as a unit (and forming their two romantic pairs, of course) throughout. I really like the characters and I am delighted by the curse/haunt storytelling. Cannot wait to see more.
2) Favorite fantasy book(s): this is so hard. okay, okay, brief rundown. brief. I can do this. bookshelf by bookshelf, I think. we'll take as granted everything by Seanan McGuire, sure. Bayou Moon and Magic Strikes by Ilona Andrews. By the Sword and From a High Tower by Mercedes Lackey. Bryony and Roses and Summer in Orcus by T Kingfisher. The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley. Deep Wizardry by Diane Duane. The Long Patrol-Marlfox-Taggerung by Brian Jacques, which I always read in a shot as if they were one book. Similarly, the Protector of the Small and Magic Circle quartets by Tamora Pierce, and the Icewind Dale trilogy by RA Salvatore. Tangled Webs by Elaine Cunningham. The Return of the King by JRR Tolkien (really all the LotR trilogy, but even I cannot say I sit and read them all three straight through as if they were one). The Wee Free Men and Thud! by Terry Pratchett.
4) Favorite science fiction book(s): The Ship Who Sang and Dragonsdawn by Anne McCaffrey. Ancillary Mercy by Ann Leckie. Exit Strategy and Network Effect by Martha Wells. The Galaxy and the Ground Within by Becky Chambers. Rescues and the Rhyssa by TS Porter (also a favored queer fiction book, but I love the alien worldbuilding so much it has to be here)
8) Favorite queer fiction book(s): Humanity for Beginners by Faith Mudge. Nightvine by Felicia Davin. the Harwood Spellbook series by Stephanie Burgis (also a down-in-one-shot series). Holly and Oak by R Cooper.
12) Favorite horror book(s): I haven't read too many horror books, so my pool is limited here, but The Twisted Ones and The Hollow Places by T Kingfisher both gave me the shudders so bad.
15) Which genre(s) are your favorite? Fantasy! I love all the fantasy subgenres, and especially the magical realism overlaps.
17) Favorite finished book series: How finished is finished? A lot of my serieses are made up of several trilogy/quartet subsets together in a world. hmmmm. The Protector of the Small quartet again by Tamora Pierce, I think.
20) Where and how do you find new books to read? I mentioned in my reply to digs that I'm subscribed to a ton of newsletters, but I feel like I undersold their effect on me. I don't know how many I'm subscribed to--just sat here and off the top of my head counted to eighteen that post at least weekly and I'm so sure I'm missing some--and I love having that regular infusion of book progress and reviews and writing thoughts and commentary. I really do recommend that folks subscribe to their favorite authors.
26) Favorite novella(s): Silver Shark by Ilona Andrews. The Seven Brides-to-Be of Generalissimo Vlad by Victoria Goddard. Jackalope Wives by T Kingfisher.
32) Name your favorite author(s): massive overlap with everybody else I've listed here. who haven't I mentioned? Jennie Crusie, Jayne Ann Krentz, JD Robb (which is a Nora Roberts penname but they've got distinct enough works I want to list them out separate). Patricia Briggs, Patricia C Wrede, Max Gladstone, Gail Carriger, Nalini Singh. And Ed Greenwood, about half the time.
44) The book(s) whose stories have become part of your very makeup: The Lord of the Rings trilogy by JRR Tolkien. Watership Down by Richard Adams. Agnes and the Hitman by Jennifer Crusie. Silver Borne by Patricia Briggs. The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett. Phoenix & Ashes by Mercedes Lackey. The Hands of the Emperor by Victoria Goddard.
46) I like (weird or genre-defying books), recommend me a book to read, please: First thought was the Humans Are Weird series by Betty Adams, though that might not be what you mean. They're intensely fun collections of 'humans are space-orcs' style vignettes. Maybe more directly books that are weird would be the Craft Sequence series by Max Gladstone and Hammers on Bone by Cassandra Khaw. Very toothy complicated magical realism. And my favorite genre-blending books are always the Elemental Masters books by Mercedes Lackey. A Study in Sable for instance is equal parts a Sherlock Holmes story and a retelling of The Twa Sisters fairytale, and also a coherent installment in an ongoing historical fantasy series about elemental mages in early 1900s England.
47) What are the last three books you read? Indexing by Seanan McGuire, Die in Plain Sight by Elizabeth Lowell, Pirate's Honor by Chris A Jackson
50) What kind of book have you never read but always hope to find at some point in the future? This is such a fascinating question. I don't know that there's anything in particular that I've always wanted and never found, but there are things I'm always looking for more and better examples of. I'm extremely picky about soulmate AUs, so a good one especially captivates me. Oh, or a really well-handled impromptu adoption! Child characters and bureaucracy are both tricky to write and things I know a lot about, and when they're done well they hook me so hard.

Hi @almost-a-class-act and thanks for the tag :)
I haven't done one of these in ages, it's making me nostalgic :3
Name: Matt
Pronouns: He/Him
Star sign: Gemini :D
Number of siblings and fun facts about them: A younger sister who is due to give birth to my niece (and my grandparents' first great-grandchild!) towards the end of this month.
Number of pets and their names: Three cats, all picked up from the street because this is Cambodia and you can't kick a stone in here without finding a stray. Their names are Gollum, Am, and Bichon :) (Yes I'm linking you to their tags because I love them but watch out if you do a deep dive in Bichon's because I can't remember if I posted pictures of him in the early days when his eyes were nasty)
Fandoms: Urgh, SO MANY xD See the tag list for a full list, but also at the moment the more eagle-eyed of you may have noticed I'm kinda deep in the Band of Brothers fandom ;P Also we got confirmation that Good Omens is getting a season 3, and Queer Eye season 8 is coming out... january 24, iirc? So there will definitely be talks of that. (I'm a bit of a fandom hopper, if you've noticed. I just have some of them that creep back a little more regularly than others.)
favorite color: Green
favorite song: I always waffle over this question because I'm like, do you mean ever or the one I've listened to a thousand times this week? Ever is probably All the Small Things by Blink-182. I was the right age for it to lodge firmly in the ol' melon I guess.
favorite author (books, fanfics, zines, webtoons, etc.): god, is it Robert Leckie? He's the only author I've actively sought out in the last couple of years. I sort of have a lifelong yen for Lewis Carroll and Dianna Wynne Jones also. I bought my nephew the two Alice books for Christmas.
Favorite fic type: Oh boy remember when I used to write nothing but angst? xD I've been fluff all the way pretty much since I came out as trans oO I'd say I can dabble in other genres, but the last time I wrote anything angsty was in 2019 and it still ended somewhat fluffily xD (Though there was about 50k worth of angst first so.)
Favorite holiday: Pride x) It makes my students laugh when I say it but it's still my favorite time of the year.
Do you have a partner (romantic, qpr, etc.)? Nah. I don't even know where I stand on that concept tbh.
Hobbies: Writing fic, and playing DND (which I don't atm for lack of a group) ...and that's about it. My life is uh. Not well filled outside of fandom, which I don't really like but also I haven't really done much about it so *shrug*
Fun facts about you: I can move my eyes somewhat independently from one another like a chameleon. It's fun to watch people's face when I do it :P
Anyone who wants to do this can consider themselves tagged, but especially: @castillon02, @simtorta and @the-coolest-bowtie

other things i learned in episode three:
– hoosier spent 99% of this episode in that blanket giving us that sickly victorian child chic (and i'm pathetic so it worked on me) and then literally only left to do some gross foot stuff with his bro
– where is the dog? i need an update, is it okay??
– we all need a bestie who will stop us stealing an MP's jeep right after we've thrown up in our boss' wastepaper bin and gone awol from the base. basilone making bad life choices his whole brand

How the different boys from Band of Brothers and The Pacific react to you being insecure
Part 3 (taking a little break from BoB and going with the main Pacific Bois Leckie, Basilone and Sledge)
Tumblr media
Robert Leckie:
• You thought Leckie was so smart. He was so well read, he wrote well too.
• You felt so dumb around him.
• You used to talk to him a lot about books and stuff like that when you first met, but since then you’ve fallen a bit silent.
• You thought he wouldn’t notice. You thought he wouldn’t care. But he did notice. And he does care.
• And he gets sad and wonders why you stopped talking to him. You were his one bright spot in this hellhole.
• He thought you always sold yourself short. He loved the way you talked about things. He thought you were so smart and eloquent.
• But when he asks you why you’ve stopped talking to him about books, you brush him off, saying you don’t know, that you just haven’t felt like it lately.
• But Leckie is having none of it. He can see the sadness in your eyes. It was the same sadness the gang had pointed out was in his eyes since your talks had stopped. He calls you out on your BS. You two argue for a bit until you lose it.
• You blew up at him even though you didn’t mean to.
• “Maybe I stopped talking to you about books because I’ve got nothing worth saying about them! You’re so much smarter than me. Why don’t you just admit it and stop bothering me about it?!”
• Leckie is a bit taken aback by this at first. He doesn’t know what to say. He has to process it for a second before he responds.
• “What do you mean you’re not smart? And your words don’t have worth?”
• “At least when compared to you.”
• “Who gives a shit about me and what I have to say?”
• “I do!”
• “Well…newsflash, I care about what you have to say too.”
• “You do?”
• “Of course! Why do you think I talk to you so much?”
• “But why?”
• “You have a unique perspective. I enjoy listening to you talk.”
Tumblr media
John Basilone:
• Being John Basilones significant other was not easy.
• The hardest part about it was the women who threw themselves at him with you standing right next to him.
• You tried to brush it off.
• But in time you grew sad and insecure.
• You thought those women were so pretty.
• You thought John deserved better than you.
• But John surely didn’t, he thought the world of you.
• So he gets concerned when he notices you’ve been a bit distant lately.
• He asks you what’s wrong but you deny that anything is. But he knows you better than that. He knows something is up.
• He doesn’t want to push you, though. So he lets it go for the time being.
• It breaks his heart to see you so sad lately. He thinks about confronting you again, but he doesn’t have to.
• One night at a party, a particular woman wouldn’t leave John alone. He tried to keep an eye on you and not become distracted by the woman, but he wasn’t entirely successful. You had managed to slip away to the bathroom.
• John panicked a bit when he noticed you were missing. He excused himself from the woman (more like pried her off of him) and went looking for you.
• He asked everyone he could if they had seen you. He finally talked to a woman that saw you go into the bathroom as she left. She mentioned you’d been crying. She asked you if you were ok. You said you were fine, just that you were on your period (you were not) and sensitive to being around so many people (you are, but you feel comfortable and safe with John).
• John goes right into the woman’s bathroom, not caring if anyone walked in.
• He looked under the stalls and saw the one where you were (you were in the only occupied one).
• He called your name.
• “John? What’re you doing in the lady’s room? You shouldn’t be in here.”
• “I wanted to check on you, tesoro. I was concerned that you left suddenly and have been gone for so long. Are you alright?”
• “Yes, I’m fine. I just got a little overwhelmed.”
• “Why did you come in here? Why didn’t you tell me? We could’ve left.”
• “You seemed busy. I didn’t want to bother you.” It came out harsher than you intended.
• John’s heart sank. He hated to think he was the reason you were like this. If he had known it was the women that were bothering you, he’d be more blunt about not being interested. He just didn’t want to be rude. He had a reputation to uphold.
• But his reputation be damned if upholding it meant you ended up alone in a bathroom stall crying. He’d do anything to make you happy. Anything.
• “I won’t bother with the women anymore. I’ll tell them to leave me alone. I’ll be more affectionate towards you to make the message that I’m taken more clear.”
• “But you can’t be rude. You have a nice guy reputation. You’re a golden boy, John. And you’re a Medal of Honor recipient. I’m just a girl from New Jersey. All of those other girls are so much prettier than me. You deserve to have one of them. Not me.”
• That was the last straw. John got down on the floor and crawled under the stall, but only just enough to look up at you. He was still on the floor on his stomach, not quite having enough room in the stall to come in any more and try to stand up in it. It looked like an uncomfortable position.
• “John! What the hell! You’ll get your uniform dirty!”
• “The uniform be damned, Y/N. I don’t care about the uniform. I don’t care about my reputation. I don’t care about all the other women. I only care about you.”
• Fresh tears began rolling down your cheeks. But these were happy tears.
• “Oh, John. Get out and stand up.”
• “Not until you promise to come out of this stall.”
• “I am, dummy, why do you think I told you to get out and stand up?”
• “Oh. Right. Sorry.”
• John crawled back out of the stall and stood up so you could unlock the door and come out.
• As soon as you did, John enveloped you in a hug. He kissed your head.
• “I love you, you know that?”
• “Yeah.”
• You left the party after that without a word to anyone (much to the protest of a couple of women and the host, but John ignored them) and spent the night at home snuggled together on the couch.
• John chose you. Over everything else. He will always choose you.
Tumblr media
Eugene Sledge (feat. Snafu and Burgin more than intended oops):
• You were on the train going home with Eugene, Snafu, and Burgin. You were having a great time relaxing after the ordeal you’d been through.
• That was until a Marine from another division started looking at you curiously.
• You mentioned it to the guys in a low voice so the man wouldn’t hear you.
• They all glanced at him every so often. He kept staring at you.
• “Is there a problem?” Burgin finally asked the man.
• “No. No problem.”
• You all went back to your business for a bit.
• But the man continued to look at you. And the guys continued to look at him.
• “Are you sure there isn’t a problem, Private? Because it kind of seems like there is. You keep looking at my friend here and you’re making her uncomfortable.”
• “Your friend is wearing a Marine uniform.”
• “No shit, Sherlock.” Snafu quipped.
• “Why is she wearing a uniform?”
• “Oh, I don’t know. Maybe because she’s a Marine?” Eugene sassed.
• The man gestured to the small cross stitched on the left arm of your uniform, which was facing the man. “You were a corpsman?”
• “Yes.” You replied.
• “What were you doing as a Marine corpsman?”
• “Saving lives. You got a problem with that?”
• “You all trust a woman in that position?”
• “Absolutely. Ain’t no better corpsman in the entire USMC.” Snafu praised
• “They’re a bit too delicate for combat, aren’t they?”
• “I think she faired alright. Did her best. Saved a lot of lives. Survived. Can’t ask for more than that.” Burgin said.
• “But how can you expect a woman to do a man’s job?”
• “I did a man’s job just fine, thank you very much.”
• “You never cracked under pressure?”
• “No. whether man or woman, it doesn’t matter if someone does in combat. No person should be expected to endure combat and come out of it completely unscathed.”
• “I’d appreciate if you’d quit bothering our friend. She didn’t have to justify herself to you at all, but she did so anyway because that’s who she is, a very nice person. Whether or not your satisfied with her answers is your own problem.”
• The man grumbled unintelligibly before returning to his business. He no longer looked at you or bothered you.
• But you were put out. You knew not everyone approved of a woman being in that position (or being in the Marines at all). You tried to brush it off as best you could. But a little voice in the back of your head always asked: “Am I good enough?”
• And no matter how many times you or someone else answered yes to that question, you just couldn’t help but come back to it.
• Eugene noticed you looked sad and distant (you’d stop engaging in conversation as well) and frowned.
• He leaned over the table and touched your arm. You snapped (moved?) your head in his direction (lol, not like that, not violently).
• “Hey. Don’t pay attention to that idiot. He’s wrong, ok? You’re the best damn corpsman. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. You served your country well. You served your fellow men well. Just like you wanted to. You saved lives. Hell, you saved sanities. You deserve as much respect as a Marine and as a corpsman as any man, probably more so because you’re a woman, not less.”
• You smiled. Eugene spoke so sincerely you felt you had no choice but to believe him.

The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma by Bessel Kolk - neurology of trauma. Pretty technical, more targeted towards practicing clinicians than patients.
NeuroTribes: The Legacy of Autism and the Future of Neurodiversity by Steve Silberman - history of autism research and perception of autism in America, starting with Kanner.
Vesper Flights by Helen MacDonald - essays on human-animal interactions with GOOD science metaphors.
H is for Hawk by Helen McDonald - full of cool falconry facts in addition to being a memoir about falconry as a quietly feral expression of love and grief.
Loving Mr. Spock by Barbara Jacobs - memoir of author's marriage to an autistic man. Very dated and now reads badly. Quit 2 chapters in.
The Reason I Jump by Naoki Higashida
Spectrum Women ed. Barb Cook and Michelle Garnett

No Time to Spare by Ursula K Le Guin - essays.
Eating the Ocean by Elspeth Probyn - metaphysical-literary analysis of the relationship between humans and fish. Quit 3 chapters in bc I was expecting more environmental science.

Race after Technology by Ruha Benjamin - how digital automation deepens racial discrimination while appearing benevolent.
Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking by Susan Cain - good insights into workplace advantages, but is suspiciously lacking in any mention of autism.
Change: How to Make Big Things Happen by Damon Centola - how the structure of relationship networks affects adoption of social change. Good stuff, would recommend.
Aliens in America by Sandra Tsing Loh - essays about growing up in a chinese-german family in LA.
The Madwoman and the Roomba by Sandra Tsing Loh - got maybe half a chapter in and DNF.
The Origin of Others by Toni Morrison - meh. At least it was short.
Where Land and Water Meet: A Western Landscape Transformed by Nancy Langston. Historical analysis of how human perception of water and land has directed wetlands management strategy, using the Malheur Basin as a case study.
The Polyamorists Next Door: Inside Multiple-Partner Relationships and Families by Elisabeth Sheff. Ethnographic study of American polyamorous families with children. Pretty good outline of typical relationship models among the sample population.
They Say/I Say: The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing by Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein. Meh. I think it's targeted more towards beginning writers.
The Lesbian Polyamory Reader by Marcia Munson and Judith Stelboum. Was published in the 90s and contains more 2nd-wave feminist philosophy than practical knowledge. TBH it feels pretty stale now.

(y/n) - your name
(y/l/n) - your last name

Tumblr media
Robert Leckie was miserable. No, miserable was an understatement. The constant island hopping and generally terrible conditions were greatly affecting him, as they did everyone else. What didn't affect everyone else, however, was the terrible enuresis he had been suffering from since Cape Gloucester. He would go to sleep dry, or as dry as one could be in the jungle, and wake up wet. This constant cycle was enough to get him sent off the line to a hospital in Banika to help this condition he had been suffering from.
After checking into the hospital and getting stripped for any "dangerous" items he could hurt himself with, he took his place on an empty cot. Looking around at the soldiers in the hospital with him, he soon realized this was a psych hospital for people he thought were crazy. It made sense why they took his belt and razor blades now. His mind kept repeatedly asking himself, 'Why am I here?' He knew he wasn't crazy, so why did everyone else think he was?
That night was relatively hard for the machine gunner. His thoughts were stuck on his current situation and his friends on the front lines. Deep down, he was relieved he was off that horrid island, away from death lurking around every corner. When he did happen to doze off, his dreams drifted to the jungles of Guadalcanal.
He shot awake, glistening with sweat, and felt the all too familiar damp feeling of the sheets beneath him. Swallowing his pride, he told a nearby hospital attendant what had happened, and they said someone would be there shortly. When he heard footfalls behind him, he didn't bother turning around before snapping at the figure, expecting it to be Ruttinger.
"Where were you, huh? You wer-"
A feminine voice cut him off. "You're not my only patient, ya' know?"
"Sorry, ma'am. I thought you were someone else." He said turning around and quickly standing up as his face reddened.
When he laid eyes on the mysterious figure, he felt his heart drop to his stomach. Never had he seen a woman as beautiful as the one standing before him. Not even Vera Keller rivaled her smooth skin and bright smile. Her nurse's uniform was so pristine and her (y/h/c) was styled in soft curls falling from beneath her cap. He's disrupted from his staring by a small laugh.
"Take a picture, it'll last longer....." She prompted for his name, raising an eyebrow.
"Leckie. Robert Leckie. B-But you can call me Bob.""
"Okay, Robert. Here is your new clothes. I'll put on the new sheets while you go change."
The reality of the situation feels like a slap to the face as his already rosy blush deepens to blood red shade. He couldn't believe the first interaction he'd had with a beautiful women in years was when he'd literally wet the bed. He vowed to never tell Chuckler or Hoosier about this, knowing they'd torment him eternally for it.
"I'm sorry ma'am."
She just held up a hand as she started stripping the sheets off the bed. "You're fine. You couldn't help it. Anyways, it's my job. This is nothing compared to some of the other things that have happened to me."
"What....other things?"
"Well, I've been puked on, bled on, and my personal favorite, had crap wiped on me."
Groaning at her last statement, he turned and started walking towards the bathroom to change. "And that's my queue to leave."
The laugh that escaped her lips brought a smile on the young man's face. He couldn't resist the urge to glance back at her small figure.
"Thank you...." This time it was his turn to learn her name.
"(Y/n) (y/l/n). Of course, and goodnight, Bob."
"Goodnight, (y/n)."
With a nod, he entered the bathroom, heart racing. After changing, he expected her to still be there, but she was nowhere in sight. As he settled in bed, his thoughts were filled with the beautiful nurse, rather than the horrors that he had witnessed during the war. He drifted to sleep this way, dreaming of his nurse.
~
As the days went by, (y/n) had been by several times to check up on the Philadelphian. Each time, they had normal conversations as if they weren't in a hospital on a small island in the Pacific, in the middle of a world war. These talks consisted of talking about where they were from and different things they liked. She loved to read, and they had numerous discussions about which authors were the best.
When he divulged that he was a writer, and many other unique details about himself, she felt something stir inside her. She had developed a crush on the sarcastic and charming soldier. Every time they spoke, both wished it could last forever, but sadly, she did have other patients to attend to.
Little did she know, he was feeling the exact same way. Vera Keller had completely vanished from his thoughts and (y/n) took her place in the forefront of his mind. Surprisingly, they had a lot in common, and her spunky attitude drew him in closer with every word that left her mouth. He couldn't help but smile every time she walked in the room or when she would start talking animatedly about something she was passionate about. There was no denying that his kind nurse could make his heart skip a beat and butterflies flutter around his stomach.
~
One day, when she went to check on him, he was laying on his pillow, just staring blankly at the ceiling. This was completely out of the ordinary. Normally, Bob would shoot up and make a snarky comment the second the young woman would walk in the room. But that day, he showed no interest in anything. Concerned, she slowly walked to his cot and sat down on the edge of it. She opened her mouth to question him but she was abruptly cut off.
"Do you think I'm crazy?"
She was so taken aback by the question, it took her a few seconds to fully process what had been said.
"Of course I don't think you're crazy." She said in a soft voice.
Finally sitting up and looking over at her, he lets out a huff of air. "Why am I here, then? Why aren't I with the other normal soldiers? I-I mean, there has to be something wrong with me, right?"
"Robert Leckie," she started, gently cupping his cheeks, "You are not crazy. You're just as sane as I am."
Closing his eyes, he leaned into her soothing touch, placing one of his hands over her much smaller one. "How do you know that?"
"I just do."
Both of them started slowly inching towards the other and he softly moved his other hand to push a stray hair behind her ear before placing it on the curve of her jaw. They both knew what would happen next, and neither one cared to stop it. Merely inches away, she could feel his warm breath on her face. She closed her eyes, willing her heart to take control, but a split second before their lips meet, the all too familiar call for a nurse echoes through the hospital.
At the call, both freeze. Robert opens his eyes to see a frustrated look on (y/n)'s normally calm face. As much as he wants this moment to continue, he knows it's her job.
"Go," he whispers.
With a short huff, she takes off running towards the source of the call. As soon as she's out of sight, he flops back down on his pillow, letting out a groan as an unfamiliar voice speaks from beside him.
"So close, buddy. So close."
Leckie turns on his side and sees the owner of the voice on the cot next to him. Chuckling, he realized this guy had a front row show of the whole ordeal.
"Yep. So close." He finally responded.
~
The next few days, he didn't see (y/n) at all, and he was starting to worry about her. It was during this time that the head doctor gave him the go-ahead to go back to the 1st Marines. He was excited to go back and see his friends, but was also disappointed that he didn't get to share anymore moments with the lovely nurse (y/l/n).
When the time for him to leave had come, he was about to get in the jeep when he heard it. It was faint, but it was there. Someone was calling his name. There was only one person who it could be, and the mere thought of her brought a smile to his face. Turning around with his bag in hand, he saw her running towards him.
Right before she reached him, he dropped the bags and wrapped his arms around her when her body collided with his. Pulling away from their hug, she tugged him town towards her by his uniform. Their lips collided and he quickly placed his hands on her cheeks as they shared a kiss that said a million unsaid words and thoughts. Whistles and hoots broke out around them, but they were too caught up in the moment to care. When the kiss broke, both were out of breath. The driver honked and called out to them.
"Sorry, man, but you've got a plane to catch."
With a sigh, he pulled a small piece of paper out of his pocket and handed it to her. "You better write me, Nurse (y/l/n)."
"And you better not go crazy without me, PFC Leckie."
"I thought you knew?" He questioned with a cheeky smile.
"Knew what?"
"You're the one who makes me crazy."

HBO War Boys and their respective Hogwarts Houses
Dick Winters- Gryffindor, I had a hard time choosing between that and Slytherin but ultimately I think Dick embodies Gryffindor perfectly
Lewis Nixon- Slytherin, Nix would probably be one of those kids who tries to get out of his pure-blooded family by proving himself to be that one who breaks the mold
Harry Welsh- he and Kitty would both be Gryffindors. Harry would probably be the terror of the Gryffindor Quidditch team
John Basilone- SLYTHERIN!!! This boy just SCREAMS Slytherin!! John wanted to be with the best of the best but he’d do anything to make sure his boys were ok
Andrew “Ack Ack” Haldane- Ravenclaw, don’t tell me this boy doesn’t smell like a Ravenclaw
Edward “Hillbilly” Jones- Hufflepuff, Eddie’s definitely got the persistent personality of a badger (see Ep. 5 that scene with the tank)
Brad Colbert- Gryffindor Head Boy, Brad doesn’t fuck around to begin with so keeping the rest of the fellow house idiots in line is one of his specialties
Ronald Speirs- Slytherin, he’s the student that appears calm, cool and collected on the outside but would probably willingly go joyriding on the broomsticks with the others
Carwood Lipton- Slytherin, I remember someone had the same thing and I could see why Lip might end up being a Slytherin (big shoutout to whoever it was I’m sorry I can’t remember your name)
Bill Guarnere- my favorite motormouth is a Gryffindor!! Him and Franny would probably be another case of double trouble
Edward “Babe” Heffron- Gryffindor, Babe would probably make an excellent chaser for the Quidditch team
Eugene Roe- Ravenclaw, his best subject would probably be herbology
Robert Leckie- Ravenclaw, everybody calls him Professor Leckie already, due to his advanced knowledge of magic
Chuckler Juregens- Hufflepuff, he’d bring all the weird plants back to the dormitories without any knowledge of where in the hell to put them
Runner Conley- Gryffindor, another chaser on the Quidditch team
Hoosier Smith- Slytherin, am I mistaken that Hoosier could easily charm the pants off of anybody whilst the others cause mischief behind their backs?
Ed Tipper- Ravenclaw, also a beater for the Quidditch team
Shifty Powers- Hufflepuff, he’d probably be another Newt Scammander
Floyd Talbert- Gryffindor’s most infamous ladies man
JP Morgan- Slytherin, like Nix I suspect JP would try and do everything to differentiate himself and the others from the sick, pure-blooded ideology. He’d probably even help train first years for the Quidditch team
Manny Rodriguez- him, John and JP would be the best students Slytherin has ever seen in a long time
Eugene Sledge- Gryffindor, Sledge would fit right in with the others
RV Burgin- Ravenclaw, he’s beauty, he’s grace but on the Quidditch field he’ll hit you in the face
Jay De L’Eau- Hufflepuff and seeker for the team, Jay might be unsuspecting but damn is he fast on a broom
Merriel “Snafu” Shelton- the Slytherin who roams about the castle with a black cat next to him at all times
Chuck Grant-Grant’s a little bit tricky to figure out, but my best guess is Ravenclaw, probably has Luna’s tendancies
Johnny Martin- a hard headed Hufflepuff some say Johnny’s a Slytherin but he’s as hard headed as they come
Bull Randleman- Hufflepuff, his and Johnny’s bunks are right next to each other which isn’t the best seeing as Bull snores
Joe Toye- Gryffindor, probably does really well with fire spells
Joe Liebgott- the Slytherin with a salty attitude
David Webster- the Ravenclaw that has read every known book in the library
Chuck Tatum- my boi is definitely a Ravenclaw!!! Would probably willingly go joyriding with Speirs and wave hello to the police officers as he flew on by
Steve Evanson- Griffyndor, but I’m sure that because he and Chuck are so tight with each other, they’d make Snape’s life a living, utter hell
Frank Perconte- short bean is a Hufflepuff but with Slytherin tendancies
George Luz- Hufflepuff, him and Chuckler would probably have the most fun putting spells on the plants
Donald Malarkey-Gryffindor, this kid’s got some guts in him, that’s for damn sure

Can I get a BoB or Pacific ship? I love your work! 💕 I'm a 5'7", fit/curvy build, with green eyes and brown hair. My friends say I'm the brown haired florence pugh. I'm a stubborn and opinionated Taurus Jewish girl and I am a total "leader" ENTJ. I'm the funny, scrappy, and opinionated tomboy of my friend group - I never take crap from anyone. I love to travel the world, horse ride, study languages and history, trying new things, dancing the night away and indulging in a little hedonistic self care. I do love fashion, and do love to look my best and be "trendy". I have been through a lot in my life, and it's made me strong and dependable - I'm the friend everyone calls to help get them out of a jam - I'm loyal and fierce as hell. I'm also an overachiever, and work myself to the bone to be the best at everything I do - top schools, top companies the ~works~. However, underneath it all, I'm a major secret romanic + softy and I secretly read romance novels and watch chick flicks. But I will take that to my grave, and I'll deny it if you ask me!! Thank you! 💕
Hello my dear, thanks for the request and I'm so glad you like my writing you're so sweet💓 for BoB, I ship you with Joe Liebgott
Tumblr media
Things between you two are a little...heated at first. You're always bickering and making sarcastic comments and poking at each other.
It was during one of these heated debates that Joe just kisses you and that's that.
After that, the boys call you the "terrible two." You're inseparable, and you're the dream team when it comes to snarky jokes.
He teaches you German, obviously all the bad words first of course.
When you go out, you go out out. I'm talking stumbling home at sunrise, heels in hand and hobbling because you've danced the night away.
He thinks you're totally gorgeous.
He always knows he can call you for help if he's stuck in a bind.
Sometimes he gets insecure and feels like he's not good enough for you, that you deserve someone better. He thinks you deserve to be with someone who's as brilliant as you.
You tell him he's a total idiot, and that you love him
He's also a secret romantic. He buys you flowers and acts like it's no big deal. He takes you on these super cute dates.
You both totally cry watching chick flicks, but of anyone accused you of that you'd punch em.
For The Pacific, I ship you with Robert Leckie
Tumblr media
He loves how opinionated you are. The two of you could debate things for hours (it can get heated but he low-key thinks you're super hot when you get mad)
He appreciates that if he's stuck in a bind, he can always count on you to have his back.
He's quite affectionate in general, but when he's drunk he is suuppperrrr cute and cuddly and handsy too like he literally can't get enough of you.
He's a terrible flirt, and you always scoff and roll your eyes but you secretly love it
Where you're you're overachiever, he's more laid back, so you balance each other out well. He reminds you to relax and you remind him to push himself a bit.
You have so much fun together. Nothing is better than a night out dancing.
You both love to read and learn new things, so a quiet night in with a book is a regular thing.
He found your stash of romance novels btw, but he never says anything 😌😉
Hope you like your ships💖
