Squid Game: Best of the Cast’s Shows and Movies to Watch
https://ift.tt/39n8nzK
This Squid Game article contains some spoilers, though not the outcome of the game.
There are so many things to like about Squid Game, Netflix‘s Korean-language series about a group of desperate people competing in a deadly game, but one of the major ones is the stellar cast. Featuring some well-known Korean actors, as well as some relative newcomers to the acting scene, Squid Game‘s ensemble is more than ready to elevate the clever script and sharp direction. If you’re interested in checking out other projects from this cast after finishing Squid Game, here are our recommendations!
Lee Jung-jae (이정재) as Seong Gi-hun
Squid Game character: Leading the cast of characters is Lee Jung-jae’s Gi-hun, a man who has fallen on tough times after losing his job and his marriage. We are first introduced to Gi-hun in the context of his gambling addiction, as he desperately trues to get out of crippling debt in order to be a better father, son, and friend.
What to watch next: Lee Jung-jae is a 48-year-old actor who began his career as a model before transitioning into TV and later film. Notable projects include Il Mare, the 2000 film on which Hollywood’s The Lake House was based and 2013’s historical drama The Face Reader, in which Lee has second-billing as Grand Prince Suyang.
Jung Ho-yeon (정호연) as Kang Sae-byeok
Squid Game character: Jung Ho-yeon plays Kang Sae-byeok (aka the one who looks like ENHYPEN’s Ni-ki), a North Korean defector who decides to play Squid Game in order to get the money to get her mother out of North Korea and to create a stable life for her younger brother, who is currently living in an orphanage.
What to watch next: Jung Ho-yeon will no doubt be one of the breakout stars of Squid Game. The 27-year-old actress is a successful model, and has previously appeared on Korea’s Next Top Model. Squid Game is her first on-screen role, so we’ll have to wait to see what she does next. In the meantime, you can rewatch Squid Game or check out Season 4 of Korea’s Next Top Model.
Park Hae-soo (박해수) as Cho Sang-woo
Squid Game character: Cho Sang-woo grew up with protagonist Gi-hun, and is the success story of his neighborhood after going to a prestigious university and making it big as a businessman. Unbeknownst to Gi-hun and Sang-woo’s mother, Sang-woo has stolen money from his clients and is wanted by the police. He enters Squid Game in an attempt to make back the money so that he can save his mother’s business and house, both of which he risked to back his illegal activities.

Squid Game: What Could Season 2 Look Like?
By Kayti Burt
What to watch next: Park Hae-soo is a 39-year-old actor who is perhaps previously best known, especially to international audiences, for his starring role in 2017’s Prison Playbook (one of our Best Korean Dramas to Watch on Netflix). In the drama, Park plays a baseball player who unexpectedly lands himself in jail days before his major league baseball debut. The show follows his life within prison, along with the lives of other inmates and guards, including his former best friend, who is now a corrections officer. Prison Playbook is one of the most popular K-dramas ever.
Wi Ha-joon (위하준) as Hwang Jun-ho
Squid Game character: Wi Ha-joon plays Hwang Jun-ho, who is a bit of an outlier character in a series that mostly features characters in the game as protagonists. Unlike Gi-hun or Sang-woo, Jun-ho is a cop who is investigating Squid Game after finding one of the game’s calling cards in his missing brother’s apartment. He does a pretty good job too, infiltrating the operation in diverse ways.
What to watch next: Wi is a 30-year-old actor with a solid filmography. If you’re a horror fan, check out Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum, a 2018 found footage horror film that takes place in the former Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital, considered to be one of Korea’s most-haunted places. You could also check out Midnight, a 2021 thriller in which Wi plays a serial killer. If you’re looking for something a bit softer, Wi has a supporting role in 2018 romantic drama Something in the Rain, in which he stars as one protagonist’s younger brother and the other protagonist’s best friend.
Oh Young-soo (오영수) as Oh Il-nam
Squid Game character: Oh Young-soo plays Oh Il-nam, the oldest contestant in Squid Game, and someone Gi-hun feels some responsibility for as the game progresses.
What to watch next: Oh Young-soo is a 76-year-old actor with a filmography that mostly includes monk roles. His previous work has mostly included playing supporting roles, but if you want to see him in something else, check out 2003 feature film A Little Monk, about a generation of three monks living in one temple, or Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… and Spring, a 2003 film about the life of a Buddhist monk.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Heo Sung-tae as Jang Deok-su
Squid Game character: Heo Sung-tae plays Jang Deok-su, a gangster who enters Squid Game to settle his gambling debts, and who refuses to trust anyone in the process.
What to watch next: Heo Sung-tae is a 43-year-old actor with an extensive filmography. If you’d like to see him in a very different project, check out Racket Boys, a recent Netflix K-drama in which he appears as the coach of a boys badminton team in Episodes 10-12. If you’d like to see him in another dastardly role, check out 2021’s Beyond Evil, in which he plays a cold-blooded businessman.
Kim Joo-ryung (김주령) as Han Mi-nyeo
Squid Game character: Kim Joo-ryung stars as Han Mi-nyeo, a woman who will say or do whatever she has to in order to find her best chance at winning. Originally introduced claiming to be a new mother, we never actually learn that much about Mi-nyeo’s life outside of the game.
What to watch next: Kim Joo-ryung is a 45-year-old actress with an extensive filmography, though mostly in supporting roles. (Hopefully, her impressive turn in Squid Game will lead to more opportunities for the actress.) If you’d like to see her in a minor role in a successful drama, Kim appears in Episodes 16 and 17 of 2018 historical drama Mr. Sunshine. If you’d like to see Kim in a central role, check out 2012 feature Sleepless Night, in which she plays one half of a married couple working to get through daily life.
Tripathi Anupam as Abdul Ali
Squid Game character: Tripathi Anupam plays Ali, a 33-year-old Pakistani man who joins the game in order to get the money to support his family, including his parents and brother back in Pakistan and his wife and baby son, who traveled with him to Korea.
What to watch next: Tripathi Anupam is a 32-year-old Indian-born actor, who is another standout in Squid Game and a rare actor of non-Korean descent in the Korean TV and film industry. Anupam had a small appearance in Netflix’s Korean sci-fi feature Space Sweepers, in which he appeared as James Sullivan’s secretary. Most of Anupam’s previous roles have been minor, with Squid Game being a breakout role for the actor.
Lee Yoo-mi (이유미) as Ji-yeong
Squid Game character: Lee Yoo-mi plays Ji-yeong, a young woman who we find out entered the game immediately after having been released from prison for the crime of killing her abusive father. She becomes close with Sae-byeok, who recruits her to join her team for tug-of-war.
What to watch next: Lee Yoo-mi is a 27-year-old actress who has appeared in many TV shows and films, mostly in supporting roles. If you’d like to see her in another drama, check out 365: Repeat the Year, a time travel drama that sees 10 people given the chance to travel back a year to “reset” their lives, only to find themselves in danger.
Gong Yoo (공유) as The Salesman
Squid Game character: Gong Yoo appears in a minor role as The Salesman, aka the man who recruits Gi-hun into Squid Game by playing a game of ddakji with him on the subway
What to watch next: Gong Yoo is a very successful actor in Korea who is also known internationally. The 42-year-old actor’s most well-known movie role is Train To Busan, in which he stars as the divorced father and businessman protagonist trying to escape the zombie apocalypse on a high-speed bullet train. His most well-known TV role is in the uber successful Guardian: The Lonely and Great God, one of the highest-rated dramas in Korean TV history. In it, he stars as a 939-year-old immortal goblin and protector of souls. Longtime K-drama stans, however, probably know Gong from his starring role in Coffee Prince, a romance about a woman pretending to be a girl in order to get work and a young food empire mogul, played by Gong.
Lee Byung-hun as The Front Man, aka In-ho
Squid Game character: Lee Byung-hun plays the Front Man, aka the masked man who runs the day-to-day operations of Squid Game. He lives in a fancy apartment within the game’s facility, and maintains contact with the game’s supervisors via a landline.
What to watch next: If you’re looking to see more of Lee Byung-hun’s face than Squid Game offers, then you have a lot of options. The 51-year-old actor and singer has been a part of the Korean entertainment industry for decades, and has been one of the most successful Korean actors in that time, with five films on the 50 highest-grossing domestic films in South Korea list: Joint Security Area; The Good, the Bad, the Weird; Masquerade; Inside Men; and Master.
Lee is the only Squid Game actor to have some substantial Hollywood credits on his filmography as well. American audiences may recognize him from his role as Storm Shadow in the G.I. Joe franchise; he has also appeared in Red 2, Terminator Genisys, and The Magnificent Seven. A member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, he was the first South Korean to present an Oscar at the Academy Awards.
Which Squid Game cast member were you the most impressed by? Let us know in the comments below…

Week 12: Harry Styles
If I may, Harry Styles could be compared to the ‘00s Justin Timberlake. He began in a boyband, and once the band separated, began a solo career that blossomed. It’s no secret that Harry Styles is a modern household name. His music is accessible to all walks of life, and his personability is noticed by many. As a co-writer for artists such as Michael Buble, Ariana Grande, and Meghan Trainor, Styles’, well... style, is adored by pretty much everyone everywhere.
Harry Styles jumped almost immediately into the spotlight as a teeny-bopper contestant on British TV show The X Factor, where he was eliminated as a solo contestant then brought back to form the boyband One Direction. As a group their fame skyrocketed throughout the show until they eventually placed third. Shortly after the show ended, the five-piece put out a succession of five immensely successful albums over three short years. They announced an indefinite hiatus in early 2016 and each member began their own successful solo runs.
Rather than jumping the gun, Styles didn’t release his self-titled debut album until May 2017. From this album came instant hits such as “Sign of the Times” and “Kiwi.” Described widely as BritPop, Harry Styles settled down the ever-electric vibe surrounding chart topping albums by Bruno Mars or Imagine Dragons. His eclectic public presence and ambiguous fashion since his rise to stardom both surprised and enamored his fans and critics alike. The album as a whole sounds best chronologically. With an ethereal, smooth opening sequence and energy building as the minutes pass, soon hard-hitting drums and powerful vocals envelop the listener. Taking great influence from the likes of The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Fleetwood Mac, Styles shouts to the rooftops with the accompanying swagger surrounding British notariety.
In December 2019 Styles released his second LP Fine Line. Met with positive reviews, the sophomore album listens more as a compilation of hook-and-chorus hits rather than his previous storytelling tracks. That is, until love and takes over (doesn’t it always?) in mid-album tracks “Cherry” and “Falling,” where Styles yearns for the romance of the international beatnik he used to adore, and who used to adore him. “Don’t you call him baby [...] Don’t you call him what you used to call me.” “You said you cared / and you missed me too / And I‘m well aware I write too many songs about you.” He snaps back to reality with tracks like “To Be So Lonely” and “Canyon Moon,” two bops that raise the spirits of the listener once again. Rather than in Harry Styles, Fine Line starts fast, slows down, then picks it up at the end.
It’s no surprise that Harry Styles is my celebrity crush. I’ll shout it from the rooftops. Perhaps because we are the same age, or perhaps because he’s mysterious and charming, it ultimately doesn’t matter. I’m not the only one that is enamored by this guy (cue my mom). He is naturally incredibly talented, both in his artistry and in his charisma, and dares to push the limits of music, fashion, sexuality, and acceptance. This is just the beginning for the superstar, and I have a feeling he also understands exactly what he’s gotten himself into.

The 5th edition will start with the arrival of the candidates on October 5 and 6. The finale of the Next 5 pageant is scheduled on October 25 and is reported will be hosted by Filipino actor Xian Lim and Miss Grand International 2016 1st Runner-up Nicole Cordoves, also from the Philippines.
At the finale, Miss Grand International 2016 Ariska Putri will crown her successor.
Miss Grand International is the youngest among the Next 5 pageants. But its infancy has not hindered it from producing spectacularly produced finals, amazing stage design, and high-caliber camera use. The pageant has also managed to gain an insane amount of social media following, now ranking 3rd among all international competitions next to Miss Universe and Miss World.

Surviving Life and Conquering the Grail Of Trail
Tumblr media
The Story
Firstly, it’s taken me nearly 3 weeks to pen my thoughts down on what happened at the 10th edition of probably SA’s most iconic trail race, the Otter African Trail Run that took place on October 20th. Partly because life continued, and partly because I didn’t want the euphoria to end.
Ever since I read an article in Runner’s World, back in 2009, written by my good friend & trail mentor, Patrick Cruywagen, on his experience at the Otter, the Otter has been a bucket list event and in the back of my mind.
In fact, it was this article that got me into trail running in the first place.
Dubbed the Grail of Trail, The Forbidden Run, this iconic trail in the Tsitsikamma Section of the Garden Route National Park is only allowed to be run during the event week, as running it during any other time of the year is not only illegal, but could also see you banned from the trail.
Ironically, it was due to the illegal running of brothers John & Mark Collins that the idea of the trail race was born. Back in the day they use to run the route after first dropping off their bicycles in Nature’s Valley, driving back to the start of the trail, running it, and then cycling back to Storms River Mouth camp site to pick up their cars again.
With over 7000 steps varying in height and distance apart & almost 2400m vertical ascent to negotiate, various river mouths & streams to cross, and the continual undulating technical terrain, makes for possibly the most difficult/challenging trail run in SA. No easy feat, as this 42km stretch of trail requires 100% at all times.
The Otter is divided in a Run (8 hour cut-off) and the Challenge (11 hour cut-off), and alternates each year with the Retto (Otter in reverse) running from Nature’s Valley side back to Storms River Mouth compared to the traditional East to West running on this iconic 5 day hiking trail!
My Otter History
In 2013 I got offered the opportunity (4 days notice) to run the Challenge, and with very little training or idea what I was getting myself into accepted the offer immidediately.
That day I was handed a good old trail spanking, devoured by the trail and spat out on the other side just under 6h30 later. I recall moments where I wanted to crawl into the foetal position, and call my mom to come and get me! But once the Otter bug has bitten, that trail flows through your veins and you will be back time & time again.

In 2015 I entered the Otter for a second go, taking my good friend & training partner Will Saaiman along! That day I got spanked even harder as a combination of tricky underfoot conditions & soaring heat took its toll on me. Will narrowly missed out on the 8 hour cut-off. That night was probably the lowest point in my trail running career and something that broke me. Seeing Will’s face at prize giving as I got up to receive my green Sub-7 medal while he remain seated.
Although a Retto was never on the cards as I prefer the traditional or “Classic” way, I vowed to be back the next year and help him get his medal. But as life would have it, a lower back injury forced me to withdraw months before the race, but thanks to race organisers Magnetic South, I got the opportunity to do some social media work on the route and somehow still be apart of the vibe, so I tagged along to support Will, who managed to run an incredible 7h25 that year.
In 2017 we were back again, a Sub-6 my goal, and for Will, just to get that elusive Otter Classic medal. Although I managed to run a PB of 6h17, and generally had a better day out than the previous 2 occasions, I was disappointed in my result. Will ran another great race, and could now brag with back 2 back medals. I on the other hand started planning for 2019, and give it one more bash on the Classic.
This was also the year that the organisers began an initiative where runners who have done 5 or more Otters received a special medal, and adding 1+ 1, I got to the conclusion that if I did the Retto in 2018, then Otter 2019 will be my 5th (and maybe final) attempt at that elusive Sub-6.

The Goal! Image by Sue Ullyett
As luck would have it, soon after I entered for Retto 2018, Salomon, the title sponsor of the Otter Trail Run, announced the Golden Trail Series, consisting of 5 of the most technical & iconic marathon distance trail races over the world, with the Otter being the grand finale. The top 10 Men & Women after the initial 5 races would then be invited over to the Otter for what would be the most competitive international field ever assembled for a South African trail race.
To run or just see the likes of Kilian Jornet, Marc Lauenstein, Stian Angermund-Vik, Sage Canaday, Ruth Croft, Ida Nilsson and many more mixing it up with local trail stars Kane Reilly, Thabang Madiba, Christiaan Greyling, Johardt van Heerden, Megan Levinson & Robyn Owen in our back yard, would be one for the memory bank!

The Build-up
But life has other ideas, and 2018 has probably been one of the hardest years in my & my family’s lives. At the end of May my wife and I was involved in a terrible head-on collision, which today still has an impact on how we go around our day to day business. Nini took the brunt of the impact, and although I might not have the visible scars, it did have an impact on my lower back and my mental state at the time.
Juggling work, being a father to two incredible kids, trying to be a loving & helping husband and finding the time to train properly has its challenges, and I’m fortunate enough to have a wife that affords me the opportunity to live my passion for trail & supports my goals, especially when it comes to the Otter.
Personally, I don’t think any amount of training will ever result in an easy running of the Otter, although specific Otter training will go a long way in making it easier or more tolerable.
Since the accident, I have not been able to train as I wanted to, as at some point the lower back pain would flair up and cause discomfort, adding to an already weakened mental state! The furthest I ran in the past 5 months was 21km, the longest being just over 3h! What I did focus on was as much climbing as possible on any run, and the stair master in the gym became my new best friend.
I also decided to take the whole family along for the first time, including my in-laws, so they too could be a part of the Otter and Golden Trail Series vibe.
The goal, shared only with a few close friends in the trail fraternity, was a Sub-6, although I knew that that would be a push with the limited training distance wise that I have done in the build up.
The Vibe & Prologue
Tumblr media
Although the skies might have been gloomy upon arrival for registration, the atmosphere inside the marque tent was warm and welcoming, as one has become accustomed to with any Magnetic South event. After greeting all the familiar faces who have become part of the Otter family over the years, it was time to get the compulsory kit check done, and head out to do the prologue.
With a slight drizzle, interrupted every now and then by a slightly heavier downpour, I decided to rather go out sooner rather than later, as the underfoot conditions would only deteriorate towards the latter stage of the day. (Apparently the elites didn’t get that message, as some ridiculous fast times were posted, lead by SA’s own Kane Reilly & Toni McCann!
On every of my previous 3 attempts I have managed to make the Abangeni (The Challengers), the top 24 runners based on their prologue times, contesting for the Grail. With the arrival of the Golden Trail Series superstars, that was basically out of the question, although I felt my speed leading into the event was better than previous years, so I would give it a bash anyway and see how close I could get.
We were warned at the prologue briefing that conditions were really slippery underfoot, especially when stepping on any exposed logs, the moss covered roots & the wooden bridges found on the trail. I sped off like a house on fire, but within the first 300m found myself on all fours having slipped in a muddy bend. On we went, and with the second, slightly more worrying slide that looked something like a drunk ice skater, I decided to pull the handbrake a bit and rather coast it in more cautiously! No one has ever won the Otter by just running the prologue, but some have ended their journey before even setting foot on the Grail Of Trail.

Race briefing that evening was a mixture of ooh’s & aah’s seeing all the international athletes being introduced. I had a great sit down and chat to Marc Lauenstein,(the current Otter & Retto* record holder and only man to run a Sub-4 in both directions) who even signed a shoe for me. My friends close trail friends know I’m a bit of a trail shoe geek and major fan of runners who can run technical trails at ridiculous speeds. That signed shoe (which also boasts Kilian’s signature on the other side) is now the centre piece in my trail memory display behind my bar!
*Polish athlete Bartlomiej Przedwojewski won this year’s Retto in an incredible time of 3:40;48
The usual cheers went up as resident Otter Meteorologist, Derek Van Dam, announced a Weather Alert Level 1 from the CNN International weather studio in Atlanta. After that, a few more hi’s & bye’s and it was time to head to bed.
It Has Arrived
It was an early night, although the usual tossing & turning started from about 3am. My father in-law was so kind as to take me to the start, partly because he wanted his daughter to look after her own kids (as he had all four his grandchildren in his car the previous day) and to make sure I actually start and not get a lift back via any of the Collins clan.
Nervous chatter, a light jog, a few snapshots of the beauty that is Nature’s Valley beach as the sun started to peak through the clouds, and the sound of cow bells started the day as the Abangeni trotted off on the initial 800m or so “neutral zone” before dibbing in at the first official timing check point, and speeding off into the distance never to be seen again by the mere mortals left on the beach.
I started in the sixth batch of 4 runners, at 07:12:30, a group that included my fellow Altra team mate Pieter Calitz, and GU’s Rohan Kennedy. The conversation with these 2 lasted all but 800m, and I said my goodbye’s as they too sped off towards the cliff face in the distance.
Tumblr media
Our little group sets off! Image by Peter Kirk
A little later down the beach I caught up with Kyle Herring,  and we chatted and coasted along hitting the time checks I wanted to achieve, including getting to Andrè Hut (+/-5km) and seeing Kilian Jornet cheering the runners on, having pulled out due to injury at this point. Kyle decided to up his pace just before the famous Bloukrans crossing (+/- 12km) as he had a faster goal time in mind, and that was the last I would see of him. My swim across Bloukrans was nothing that would make the likes of Michael Phelps or Chad Le Clos sit up and take notice, but it did suffice in getting me across while race photographers Jacques Marais & Jeff Ayliffe had a good laugh.

All went according to plan, working hard enough on the climbs without burning out, and smashing the downs as fast as possible. I was hitting my desired time goals at the various checkpoints with a few minutes to spare each time, including a quick stop at the GU munchie point at Oakhurst Hut (21km) to refill my soft flasks with water & Tailwind, and munch down a few baby potatoes.
From here it got a little tougher, with extended periods of running alone. By Scott Hut (28km), still within my time check, things started going array. The next stretch of 7km to Ngubu (35km) would be the toughest section both mentally and physically, as for the first time I was starting to fall behind the eight ball, and by the time I hit Ngubu I was 12min adrift of goal pace, knowing that the next 3/4km would be the most continuous technical section of the whole trail. With good friend Stu McConnachie catching up from behind (it also happened in 2017 with about 6km to go) my mental head space took a turn for the worst and self doubt started creeping in. This time though, Stu was struggling too, and as he would drop me on the climbs, I would make up ground again on the downs.
Tumblr media
In 2017 Stu & I had time for a selfie. Not this time!
Just before reaching Ngubu I was about to take out my phone, call Nini, and tell her I’m not going to make it, while trying to hang onto Stu and death march it in. A familiar voice beckoned down below on the last decent into Ngubu where the familiar face of Robert le Brun greeted us with some  words of inspiration. That, together with a fellow runner telling me it’s just 4km that needed to be smashed hard was just what I needed. I filled up my softflask with 1 last Tailwind sachet, basically swallowed a Racefood FARbar in 1 go, and decided to give it my all over the next 4km.
At this stage the slightest incline would still bring me to a halt, although I was able to keep a relative good pace, dropping Stu as we hit the rocky coastline. Passing the famous waterfall with about 2.5km to go I started getting the feeling that my Sub 6 was possible. A little further down the trail, trail friend, Ian Little, gave the last few encouraging words needed, and at this point I even started catching a few runners in front of me on the more technical sections! Not long after we were spat out back onto the last piece of forest single track towards the finish.
As I ran up the stairs at the start of the Storms River camp site, my daughter Janke was standing there and she ran the last 200m with me. I still don’t have the words to describe the feeling of running into that finishing chute, dibbing that timing check point one last time, looking at my watch and then seeing Nini’s face smiling at me with tears running down her cheeks!
Tumblr media
This moment will stick with me forever! Image by Karien Ham
I managed to complete the route in 5:57, and only later would hear the tails of stress the family had looking at the big time board at the finish line, as minutes and seconds would tick off closer and closer to that 6 hour mark.
To be honest, a piece of my soul still lies on those rocks between Ngubu & Storms River, and the Otter would forever be apart of me. Better than achieving my goal though is the fact that I might have given a piece of me away that day, but I gained so much more! For the first time in over 2 years, since pulling out from a race due to my back, I found some mental toughness again.
Tumblr media
Thank You
A few words of thanks need to go out to all that made just journey possible, and support my crazy passion of all things trail.
It would not be possible without the continuous support of friends (you know who you are) and family and some amazing sponsors.
The guys from Altra Running & Ultimate Direction South Africa, especially Roger Zeino &Alex Hawkins, thanks for giving me the opportunity to run in the best gear and with zero limits.
Grant & Mel Markey, from Tailwind Nutrition. You guys are like family, and when all else fails, I know that Tailwind won’t, nor your support & encouragement.
Kate Frost from Racefood. Your continuous support is greatly appreciated.
Tumblr media
The gear!
To the Collins clan, Mark, John, Christine & Belen, this event would not be possible without your passion for the sport & the environment. We, as the trail community of SA, salute you, and congratulations on the 10th edition of the Otter African Trail Run.
So it’s time to up the ante, and I will be back in 2019, to once again try to survive, but more so, conquer the Grail Of Trail.

Who Are The Two Republicans Running For President
New Post has been published on https://www.patriotsnet.com/who-are-the-two-republicans-running-for-president/
Who Are The Two Republicans Running For President
Tumblr media
: Andrew Jackson Vs Henry Clay Vs William Wirt
Two Republicans, Nine Thousand Democrats Running for President
Democratic-Republican Andrew Jackson was reelected in 1832 with 688,242 popular votes to 473,462 for National-Republican Henry Clay and 101,051 for Anti-Masonic candidate William Wirt. Jackson easily carried the Electoral College with 219 votes. Clay received only 49, and Wirt won the seven votes of Vermont. Martin Van Buren won the vice presidency with 189 votes against 97 for various other candidates.
The spoils system of political patronage, the tariff, and federal funding of internal improvements were major issues, but the most important was Jacksons veto of the rechartering of the Bank of the United States. National-Republicans attacked the veto, arguing that the Bank was needed to maintain a stable currency and economy. King Andrews veto, they asserted, was an abuse of executive power. In defense of Jacksons veto, Democratic-Republicans labeled the Bank an aristocratic institutiona monster. Suspicious of banking and of paper money, Jacksonians opposed the Bank for giving special privileges to private investors at government expense and charged that it fostered British control of the American economy.
The Anti-Masons convened the first national presidential nominating convention in Baltimore on September 26, 1831. The other parties soon followed suit, and the convention replaced the discredited caucus system of nomination.
: Benjamin Harrison Vs Grover Cleveland
In 1888 the Democratic Party nominated President Grover Cleveland and chose Allen G. Thurman of Ohio as his running mate, replacing Vice President Thomas Hendricks who had died in office.
After eight ballots, the Republican Party chose Benjamin Harrison, former senator from Indiana and the grandson of President William Henry Harrison. Levi P. Morton of New York was the vice-presidential nominee.
In the popular vote for president, Cleveland won with 5,540,050 votes to Harrisons 5,444,337. But Harrison received more votes in the Electoral College, 233 to Clevelands 168, and was therefore elected. The Republicans carried New York, President Clevelands political base.
The campaign of 1888 helped establish the Republicans as the party of high tariffs, which most Democrats, heavily supported by southern farmers, opposed. But memories of the Civil War also figured heavily in the election.
Northern veterans, organized in the Grand Army of the Republic, had been angered by Clevelands veto of pension legislation and his decision to return Confederate battle flags..
Two Republicans One Backed By Trump Head To Runoff In Texas Special Congressional Election

WASHINGTON, May 2 – A Texas Republican backed by former President Donald Trump has advanced to a runoff election to fill a U.S. House of Representatives vacancy left by the death of her husband, while Democrats were shut out of the contest.
Susan Wright, whose husband Ron Wright in February became the first sitting member of Congress to die of COVID-19, was the top vote-getter on Saturday in a crowded field of 23 candidates vying to represent the state’s 6th Congressional District. read more
Wright was headed to a runoff against another Republican in the Dallas-Fort Worth suburbs, a longtime Republican-held district.
Democrats had hoped to pick up the seat to expand their slim House majority. But they conceded Sunday they had missed the chance.
Wright received 19.2% of the vote, followed by former military fighter pilot Jake Ellzey, another Republican, who drew 13.8%, according to the Texas secretary of state’s office. Just 354 votes and less than half a percentage point separated Ellzey from Democrat Jana Lynne Sanchez, who was in third place with 13.4%.
“Democrats have come a long way toward competing in Texas, but we still have a long way to go,” Sanchez, the granddaughter of Mexican immigrants, said in a statement. “Two Republicans will be competing to represent this congressional district.”
Us Election 2020: Why Republicans Are Fighting In Georgia
The presidential election is over, and President-elect Joe Biden will be heading to the White House in January. But in Georgia, there are two more key political battles still under way.
All of the so-called battleground states have certified their results for the presidency, but next month, the outcomes of two critical US Senate races will determine the upper chamber’s balance of power.
Early voting began on Monday in the southern state for these 5 January run-off races that will shape Mr Biden’s first term.
Here’s what you need to know.
: James K Polk Vs Henry Clay Vs James Birney
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The election of 1844 introduced expansion and slavery as important political issues and contributed to westward and southern growth and sectionalism. Southerners of both parties sought to annex Texas and expand slavery. Martin Van Buren angered southern Democrats by opposing annexation for that reason, and the Democratic convention cast aside the ex-president and front-runner for the first dark horse, Tennessees James K. Polk. After almost silently breaking with Van Buren over Texas, Pennsylvanias George M. Dallas was nominated for vice president to appease Van Burenites, and the party backed annexation and settling the Oregon boundary dispute with England. The abolitionist Liberty Party nominated Michigans James G. Birney. Trying to avoid controversy, the Whigs nominated anti-annexationist Henry Clay of Kentucky and Theodore Frelinghuysen of New Jersey. But, pressured by southerners, Clay endorsed annexation even though he was concerned it might cause war with Mexico and disunion, thereby losing support among antislavery Whigs.
Enough New Yorkers voted for Birney to throw 36 electoral votes and the election to Polk, who won the Electoral College 170-105 and a slim popular victory. John Tyler signed a joint congressional resolution admitting Texas, but Polk pursued Oregon and then northern Mexico in the Mexican-American War, aggravating tension over slavery and sectional balance and leading to the Compromise of 1850.
Us Ambassador To The United Nations

President Donald Trump announced Haley as his nominee for U.N. ambassador on November 23, 2016. On January 24, 2017, the Senate voted 96-4 to confirm Haley as U.S. ambassador to the U.N. Sens. Bernie Sanders , Chris Coons , Tom Udall , and Martin Heinrich were the only senators to vote against her confirmation.
On October 9, 2018, Haley announced that she would resign from the position at the end of the year to take a break from public service. She formally resigned on December 31, 2018.
Whos Running In Georgias Us Senate Election Runoffs
Georgia will hold two special elections Jan. 5, with the results ultimately determining which party will control the U.S. Senate.
In the southeastern state of Georgia, a political candidate in a primary or general election must earn more than 50% of the votes. If no one in the race meets that threshold, the top two vote-getters enter into a runoff election.
One runoff race features incumbent Sen. David Perdue, a Republican who received 49.7% of the vote on Nov. 3, and Democratic challenger Jon Ossoff, who received 47.9%.
The other runoff race is for a seat vacated by retiring Republican Sen. Johnny Isakson. Sen. Kelly Loeffler, a Republican who received 25.9% of the vote on Nov. 3, will face the Rev. Raphael Warnock, a Democrat who received 32.9%.
Republicans need to win just one of the elections to retain control of the U.S. Senate. Democrats need to win both seats to force a 50-50 Senate. Vice President-elect Kamala Harris would then be needed to cast tie-breaking votes when needed.
Here is a look at the candidates:
REPUBLICANS
Kelly Loeffler
David Perdue
DEMOCRATS
Jon Ossoff
Raphael Warnock
: Ronald Reagan Vs Jimmy Carter Vs John B Anderson
In 1980 President Jimmy Carter was opposed for the Democratic nomination by Senator Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts in ten primaries. But Carter easily won the nomination at the Democratic convention. The party also renominated Walter Mondale for vice president.
Ronald Reagan, former governor of California, received the Republican nomination, and his chief challenger, George Bush, became the vice-presidential nominee. Representative John B. Anderson of Illinois, who had also sought the nomination, ran as an independent with Patrick J. Lucey, former Democratic governor of Wisconsin, as his running mate.
The two major issues of the campaign were the economy and the Iran Hostage Crisis. President Carter seemed unable to control inflation and had not succeeded in obtaining the release of American hostages in Tehran before the election.
Reagan won a landslide victory, and Republicans also gained control of the Senate for the first time in twenty-five years. Reagan received 43,904,153 popular votes in the election, and Carter, 35,483,883. Reagan won 489 votes in the Electoral College to Carters 49. John Anderson won no electoral votes, but got 5,720,060 popular votes.
: William Henry Harrison Vs Martin Van Buren
Trump Campaign Running Two Candidates For President In Wisconsin | Rachel Maddow | MSNBC
Aware that Van Burens problems gave them a good chance for victory, the Whigs rejected the candidacy of Henry Clay, their most prominent leader, because of his support for the unpopular Second Bank of the United States. Instead, stealing a page from the Democratic emphasis on Andrew Jacksons military exploits, they chose William Henry Harrison, a hero of early Indian wars and the War of 1812. The Whig vice-presidential nominee was John Tyler, a onetime Democrat who had broken with Jackson over his veto of the bill rechartering the Second Bank.
Studiously avoiding divisive issues like the Bank and internal improvements, the Whigs depicted Harrison as living in a log cabin and drinking hard cider. They used slogans like Tippecanoe and Tyler too, and Van, Van, Van/Van is a used-up man, to stir voters. Harrison won by a popular vote of 1,275,612 to 1,130,033, and an electoral margin of 234 to 60. But the victory proved to be a hollow one because Harrison died one month after his inauguration. Tyler, his successor, would not accept Whig economic doctrine, and the change in presidential politics had little effect on presidential policy.
: Thomas Jefferson Vs John Adams
The significance of the 1800 election lay in the fact that it entailed the first peaceful transfer of power between parties under the U.S. Constitution. Republican Thomas Jefferson succeeded Federalist John Adams. This peaceful transfer occurred despite defects in the Constitution that caused a breakdown of the electoral system.
During the campaign, Federalists attacked Jefferson as an un-Christian deist, tainted by his sympathy for the increasingly bloody French Revolution. Republicans criticized the Adams administrations foreign, defense and internal security policies; opposed the Federalist naval buildup and the creation of a standing army under Alexander Hamilton; sounded a call for freedom of speech, Republican editors having been targeted for prosecution under the Alien and Sedition Acts and denounced deficit spending by the federal government as a backhanded method of taxation without representation.
Although the Republicans in the same election had won a decisive majority of 65 to 39 in the House, election of the president fell to the outgoing House, which had a Federalist majority. But despite this majority, two state delegations split evenly, leading to another deadlock between Burr and Jefferson.
: George Washington Unopposed
George Washington was the first president of the United States.
The first presidential election was held on the first Wednesday of January in 1789. No one contested the election of George Washington, but he remained reluctant to run until the last minute, in part because he believed seeking the office would be dishonorable. Only when Alexander Hamilton and others convinced him that it would be dishonorable to refuse did he agree to run.
The Constitution allowed each state to decide how to choose its presidential electors. In 1789, only Pennsylvania and Maryland held elections for this purpose; elsewhere, the state legislatures chose the electors. This method caused some problems in New York, which was so divided between Federalists who supported the new Constitution and Antifederalists who opposed it that the legislature failed to choose either presidential electors or U.S. senators.
Before the adoption of the Twelfth Amendment, there was no separate ballot for president and vice president. Each elector cast two votes for president. The candidate with the largest number of electoral votes won the presidency, and the runner-up became vice president.
‘americans Will See The Current Two Options Are Not The Choice’
Jade Simmons is a multi-hyphenated woman. A former beauty queen, professional concert pianist, motivational speaker, rapper, mother, and ordained pastor.
As she puts it, she is an unconventional candidate, “but these are unconventional times”.
“This seemed to me to be a time when we couldn’t afford to do business as usual,” she says. “I’m the daughter of a civil rights activist, and the way my father raised me was that if you see voids, if you see injustices, you need to ask yourself if that might be you that needs to be leaning in.”
She says her goal is to create equal access to opportunity, through economic, educational and criminal justice reform. And in that spirit, she’s aiming to run “the least expensive campaign in the history of our nation”.
“We think it’s abominable that it costs now almost a billion dollars to run for president when the qualifications are that you are 35 years old, a US-born resident, and have lived here 14 years,” says Ms Simmons. “We’d rather spend that money on helping people.”
Full coverage of the US election
While the Republican and Democratic nominees will be on the ballot in all states, independents must meet an array of state deadlines and access requirements.
“I know it sounds wild, given the history of independents! We believe that if we stay standing long enough, there’s still some more disruption coming in – that most Americans are going to see that the current two options are not the choice.
: Franklin D Roosevelt Vs Alfred M Landon
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In 1936 the Democratic Party nominated President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Vice President John Nance Garner. The Republican Party, strongly opposed to the New Deal and big government, chose Governor Alfred M. Landon of Kansas and Fred Knox of Illinois.
The 1936 presidential campaign focused on class to an unusual extent for American politics. Conservative Democrats such as Alfred E. Smith supported Landon. Eighty percent of newspapers endorsed the Republicans, accusing Roosevelt of imposing a centralized economy. Most businesspeople charged the New Deal with trying to destroy American individualism and threatening the nations liberty. But Roosevelt appealed to a coalition of western and southern farmers, industrial workers, urban ethnic voters, and reform-minded intellectuals. African-American voters, historically Republican, switched to FDR in record numbers.
In a referendum on the emerging welfare state, the Democratic Party won in a landslide27,751,612 popular votes for FDR to only 16,681,913 for Landon. The Republicans carried two statesMaine and Vermontwith eight electoral votes; Roosevelt received the remaining 523. The unprecedented success of FDR in 1936 marked the beginning of a long period of Democratic Party dominance.
: Donald J Trump Vs Hillary R Clinton
The 2016 election was unconventional in its level of divisiveness. Former first lady, New York Senator and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton became the first woman to be nominated by a major party in a U.S. presidential election. Donald Trump, a New York real estate baron and reality TV star, was quick to mock fellow Republicans running for the nomination as well as his democratic opponent.
In what many political analysts considered a stunning upset, Trump, with his populist, nationalist campaign, lost the popular vote, but won the Electoral College, becoming the nation’s 45th president.
Popular Vote: 65,853,516 to 62,984,825 . Electoral College: 306 to 232 .
Former Un Ambassador Nikki Haley
Haley gets a lot of buzz, and she has been actively courting attention since leaving the Trump administration almost two years ago. Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump even considered pulling her in last summer to replace Vice President Mike Pence on the 2020 ticket to help with Trump’s ailing numbers among women a move the husband-wife White House duo fervently denied.)
Haley moves up a notch based on consistent exposure since June, a prime speaking slot at the Republican National Convention on Monday night, and a strong showing of 11 percent support in the most-recent 2024 poll.
The former South Carolina governor can stake claim to being popular among the world of Washington pundits and professional political types, many of whom were interviewed for this story and spoke very highly of her. But she has also been dinged by some operatives as more of a media creation than a serious contender for 2024.
“Leaving the job was hard, but putting family first was more important. And I think now it’s about taking it a year at a time,” she said earlier this year during a meeting of the Federalist Society.
Abortion Rights Drinking Age Drugs And More
At present, Weld is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Self-described as strongly pro-choice when it comes to abortion rights, he is also said to believe that drug use should not be considered a criminal offense. He feels the drinking age should be lowered but has not stated at what age it should be set.
When it comes to matters of the military, Weld also draws a conservative line. He feels that America should withdraw its troops from foreign engagements and that the countrys efforts and resources should be refocused on domestic issues, in order to prosper. According to Aljhazeera.com, Weld previously supported bans on assault weapons in the US.
Democrat Jon Ossoff Declares Victory In Georgia Senate Runoff Election
Could compromise be on the way for 2 Republicans running for Senate seat?
Democrat Jon Ossoff declared victory over Georgia Republican David Perdue in a Wednesday morning speech to supporters in Atlanta, calling for unity to defeat the COVID-19 pandemic. No major news outlet has projected a win for the Democrat yet.
It is with humility that I thank the people of Georgia for electing me to serve you in the United States Senate,” Ossoff said.
Raphael Warnock is the projected winner in Georgia’s other Senate runoff race last night, meaning that if Ossoff’s win becomes official, Democrats will begin President-elect Bidens administration with control of both the House and Senate.
Ossoff currently leads Perdue by about 16,000 votes.
Perdue has not conceded the race. In a statement released last night, the campaign said they believed Perdue would still be victorious in the end.

Wild Card: Donald Trump
Don’t forget the Grover Cleveland scenario.
Should Trump lose in November he’d likely dominate the political spotlight until he lets it go. And that has Republicans contemplating the fallout as an ex-president Trump gets peppered with questions about trying to join Cleveland in the history books by running again in 2024 with an aim of serving non-consecutive terms as president.
“At the very least, he’ll threaten to and f— with the field to get attention,” said one Republican strategist.
A former senior Trump White House aide predicted Trump if booted from office would taunt Biden daily while toying with the notion of getting back into politics, especially if the 2020 race ended with controversy. “It’d be day by day,” the person said. “It’s not in his DNA to lose. He’d want to be vindicated.”
Other people close to the president doubt he’d run again. “I think he walks away from it and that’s kind of that,” said Paul Winfree, a former White House deputy chief of staff on policy.
What Is A Voter
The Top Two Candidates Open Primary Act, which took effect January 1, 2011, created “voter-nominated” offices. The Top Two Candidates Open Primary Act does not apply to candidates running for U.S. President, county central committees, or local offices.
Most of the offices that were previously known as “partisan” are now known as “voter-nominated” offices. Voter-nominated offices are state constitutional offices, state legislative offices, and U.S. congressional offices. The only “partisan offices” now are the offices of U.S. President and county central committee.
Reasons Why So Many Republicans Are Running For President
The GOP presidential field for 2016 may be the largest-ever in either party, with eight formally-declared candidates and another eight widely expected to enter the race in the next few months. Here are seven reasons why there are so many Republicans seeking the White House:
1. The Fame Game
To put it simply, running for president can make a person famous, rich, deeply influential or all three, even if they lose. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee was a serious candidate during his 2008 run, winning eight states. It’s unlikely he entered the race simply to gain fame.
But his unsuccessful campaign helped him get a show on Fox News. It’s hard to imagine he would have received such an opportunity without having run for president and become a favorite of the most conservative Republicans.

After his unsuccessful campaign in 2012, Rick Santorum was tapped to run a company that makes Christian-themed movies. Herman Cain was a virtually unknown former businessman who is now popular among conservative activists after his campaign four years ago.
Sarah Palin didn’t actually run for president, but she’s perhaps the perfect example of how a national campaign can change a politician’s life. Her vice-presidential run turned into a book deal, a tv show and both fame and money that she never could have achieved as governor of Alaska.

: Grover Cleveland Vs Benjamin Harrison Vs James B Weaver
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Republican party in 1892 nominated President Benjamin Harrison and replaced Vice President Levi P. Morton with Whitelaw Reid of New York. The Democrats also selected the familiar: former president Grover Cleveland and Adlai E. Stevenson of Illinois. The Populist, or Peoples party, fielding candidates for the first time, nominated Gen. James B. Weaver of Iowa and James G. Field of Virginia.
The main difference between the Republicans and the Democrats in 1892 was their position on the tariff. The Republicans supported ever-increasing rates, whereas a substantial wing of the Democratic party pushed through a platform plank that demanded import taxes for revenue only. The Populists called for government ownership of the railroads and monetary reform, confronting these issues in a way the two major parties did not.
Cleveland, avenging his defeat of 1888, won the presidency, receiving 5,554,414 popular votes to Harrisons 5,190,801. Weaver and the Populists received 1,027,329. In the electoral college Cleveland, carrying the swing states of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Indiana, garnered 277 votes to Harrisons 145.
Withdrew Before The Primaries
The following individuals participated in at least one authorized presidential debate but withdrew from the race before the Iowa caucuses on February 1, 2016. They are listed in order of exit, starting with the most recent.
Name
The following notable individuals filed as candidates with FEC by November 2015.
Name
Additionally, Peter Messina was on the ballot in Louisiana, New Hampshire, and Idaho.Tim Cook was on the ballot in Louisiana, New Hampshire and Arizona. Walter Iwachiw was on the ballot in Florida and New Hampshire.
What Makes The 2024 Presidential Election Unique
The lead up to the 2024 presidential election is different from past years because of former President Donald Trump. Hes eligible to run for a second term, and has publicly toyed with the idea while also weighing in on other Republicans he thinks could be the future of the party. If Trump does run in 2024, hed start out with unparalleled name ID and massive support, but if he doesnt, the field could be wide open for other Republicans hoping to win over his supporters. President Joe Biden said recently he expects to run for reelection in 2024.

This early on, wannabe candidates must raise their profiles, show their commitment to the party, and raise money, one Republican strategist said, to get on peoples radars even when your candidacy is in a holding pattern.
Some of the most visible 2024 presidential candidates will surely flame out long before the Iowa caucus, and theres always the chance that the next Republican nominee isnt yet considered a serious player . Theres a million and one things that will happen between now and then that will shape the race in ways we cant now predict, but the invisible primary that comes before any votes are cast has started.
Heres your very early guide to some of 2024s Republican presidential candidates, based on early polling, interviews with Republican donors and strategists and results from online political betting markets.

Who’s Who of the 2017 Grand Prix Series, Part 1: Ice Dance
Instead of weekly previews for each Grand Prix event, this year we will write introductions for each discipline as a whole (time permitting). Here’s Part 1 of our Grand Prix previews, covering the glamorous field of ice dance! Don't forget to check out our pairs and men's previews, and our Youtube playlist of program recommendations for some of the teams introduced in this post (still under construction).
Tumblr media
For those not in the know, ice dance is loosely based on ballroom dancing. Skaters are scored on step sequences, lifts, spins, and twizzles. Teams compete with a short dance and free dance; the short dance has a predetermined style of music and step sequence patterns. The theme for the 2017-18 season short dance is Latin, and the pattern dance is the Rhumba.
Ice dance in the past 4 years has seen both the rapid rise of a talented young team and the triumphant return of decorated veterans. There is no doubt right now that the top two spots in the world are occupied by Canadians Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, 2010 Olympic Champions and reigning World Champions, and the French team of Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron, World Champions in 2015 and 2016. While these two teams battle it out for gold, a whole host of other teams, each with their own individual flair, have a chance at the no.3 position. The Grand Prix series will serve as building blocks for these teams as they set their sights on the Pyeongchang Olympics, only 4 months away. Here’s a look at some of the top teams on the Grand Prix, as well as several other teams worth watching, regardless of their chances at medals.
—————————————————————
TESSA VIRTUE / SCOTT MOIR
Representing: Canada
Ages: 28/30
ISU Personal bests: SD 82.43, FD 117.20, total 198.62
ISU Season’s best: 195.76
Notable titles: 2010 Olympic Champions, 2014 Olympic Silver Medalists, 3-time World Champions, 3-time Four Continents Champions, 2016 Grand Prix Final Champions, 7-time Canadian National Champions
Programs: SD - Sympathy for the Devil/Hotel California/Oye Como Va; FD - Moulin Rouge
Grand Prix events: Skate Canada, NHK Trophy
Legends of modern ice dance, Virtue/Moir have been skating together for 20 years, and it shows in their spotless skating skills, emotional connection, and pristine unison on the ice. Virtue/Moir first burst onto the international scene with a 6th-place finish at the 2007 World Championships, and have since followed up their stellar debut with 7 World medals (3 of them gold), the Olympic title in 2010, and Olympic silver medals in 2014, among countless other accolades. After taking a 2-year break following the 2014 Olympics, they returned to competitive ice in the 2016-17 season, remaining undefeated at every competition they entered and setting new world records for the short dance and combined total score. Starting their third Olympic season with a strong win at Autumn Classic International, a Challenger Series event, Virtue/Moir aim to dominate once again. Barring major mistakes, they are likely to win both of their Grand Prix events and qualify for the Final, where they will face off against their younger training mates, Gabriella Papadakis/Guillaume Cizeron of France. The fight for gold between these two teams is fierce, and while Virtue/Moir currently have the advantage, they are not invulnerable and will need to iron out any remaining technical issues as they aim for the Grand Prix Final and Olympic titles.
Random off-ice facts: Scott opened a skate shop with his uncle and works there when he goes home to visit his family. Tessa has a jewelry line with Hillberg and Berk.

GABRIELLA PAPADAKIS / GUILLAUME CIZERON
Representing: France
Ages: 22/22
ISU Personal bests: SD 78.26, FD 119.15, total 196.04
ISU Season’s best: 188.25
Notable titles: 2015 & 2016 World Champions, 2017 World Silver Medalists, 3-time European Champions, 2016 Grand Prix Final Silver Medalists
Programs: SD - Shape of You/Thinking Out Loud; FD - Moonlight Sonata
Grand Prix events: Cup of China, Internationaux de France
Papadakis/Cizeron rocketed to prominence in the 2014-15 season following a coaching change to Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon, former Canadian ice dance champions. A talented but inconsistent team before then, Papadakis/Cizeron shocked the skating world by winning the 2015 European and World titles. Gabriella then suffered a concussion and was forced to miss the first half of the 2015-16 season, but the team came back strong in the second half, winning their second straight European and World titles in 2016 by a wide margin. It looked like smooth sailing for the team for the rest of the Olympic cycle, but the return of Tessa Virtue/Scott Moir gave Papadakis/Cizeron serious rivals for ice dance’s major titles. In three direct matchups between the two teams during the 2016-17 season, Virtue/Moir came out on top every time; however, after mistakes from Virtue/Moir, Papadakis/Cizeron defeated them in the free dance at 2017 Worlds, setting a world record score in the process. Papadakis/Cizeron shine in the free dance, where they are known for their abstract, lyrical style, but the short dance is often their weakness. They began their international season at Finlandia Trophy, placing first despite an uncharacteristic fall in the free dance. Papadakis/Cizeron are likely to win both of their Grand Prix events and qualify for the Final, but they will need flawless performances if they hope to win against Virtue/Moir.
Random off-ice facts: Guillaume is a part-time model. He sometimes designs the team’s costumes.

MAIA SHIBUTANI / ALEX SHIBUTANI
Representing: USA
Ages: 23/26
ISU Personal bests: SD 77.97, FD 115.26, total 191.85
ISU Season’s best: N/A
Notable titles: 2016 World Silver Medalists, 2011 & 2017 World Bronze Medalists, 2016 & 2017 US Champions, 2016 Four Continents Champions
Programs: SD - Mambos by Perez Prado; FD - Paradise
Grand Prix events: Rostelecom Cup, Skate America
The Shibutanis, fondly known as the ShibSibs, are a brother-sister team who have been skating together since they were children. Emerging onto the senior circuit after a promising junior career, they won a surprise bronze medal at the 2011 World Championships, but were unable to meet high expectations in the seasons afterwards. Just when it seemed like their career had stagnated, the Shibutanis resurged with a brilliantly emotional free dance to Coldplay’s “Fix You” in the 2015-16 season, winning their first National title, silver medals at the 2016 World Championships, and establishing themselves as the USA’s top ice dance team. However, technical struggles throughout the 2016-17 season have left them in a somewhat vulnerable position; although they defended their National title and won another bronze medal at 2017 Worlds, it was not without mistakes. The fight for the no.3 spot after Virtue/Moir and Papadakis/Cizeron will be intense, with several teams in the mix and no way to predict how it will all go down. The Shibutanis will face off against the Russian team Ekaterina Bobrova/Dmitri Soloviev on their home turf at Rostelecom Cup, and against Italians Anna Cappellini/Luca Lanotte and Canadians Piper Gilles/Paul Poirier at Skate America. As the Shibutanis have not participated in any pre-Grand Prix competitions, Rostelecom Cup will give us the first look at their new programs.
Random off-ice facts: The ShibSibs have an active social media presence on Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat. They often post vlogs on their Youtube channel, giving fans a backstage glimpse of skating events.

MADISON CHOCK / EVAN BATES
Representing: USA
Ages: 25/28
ISU Personal bests: SD 79.05, FD 113.31, total 189.01
ISU Season’s best: N/A
Notable titles: 2016 World Bronze Medalists, 2015 World Silver Medalists, 2-time Grand Prix Final Silver Medalists, 2-time Four Continents Silver Medalists, 2015 US National Champions
Programs: SD - Aguanile/Che Lio/Vivir mi vida; FD - Imagine
Grand Prix events: Cup of China, Internationaux de France
Although they were the USA’s top ice dance team in the 2014-15 season, winning the National title and silver medals at 2015 Worlds, mistakes at both the Grand Prix Final and the World Championships last season kept Chock/Bates far off the podium, and domestically, they’ve been playing catch-up to the resurgent Shibutani siblings. When they’re on, however, Chock/Bates are a powerful and technically competent team that are more than capable of climbing back onto major international podiums. Known for their athletic style and Madison’s in-your-face expressiveness, Chock/Bates are right in the mix for the hotly-contested third-place spot in the world. Like the Shibutanis, they have not yet competed this season, and will debut their new programs at Cup of China, their first Grand Prix event. They will face Papadakis/Cizeron at both Cup of China and Internationaux de France, as well as Bobrova/Soloviev in China and Weaver/Poje in France.
Random off-ice facts: Madison designs the team’s costumes. Both partners own poodles.

KAITLYN WEAVER / ANDREW POJE
Representing: Canada
Ages: 28/30
ISU Personal bests: SD 76.73, FD 113.83, total 190.56
ISU Season’s best: 173.56
Notable titles: 2014 World Silver Medalists, 2015 World Bronze Medalists, 2-time Grand Prix Final Champions, 2-time Four Continents Champions, 2-time Canadian National Champions
Programs: SD - Beautiful Life/Dirty Dancing 2; FD - Spartacus
Grand Prix events: Skate Canada, Internationaux de France
A veteran team loved by fans for their passion and innovative free dances, Weaver/Poje were often left playing second fiddle to Virtue/Moir in the past. It seemed their time had come in the post-Sochi era, when they emerged as one of the top ice dance teams in the world following silver medals at the 2014 World Championships. However, despite winning the Grand Prix Final two years in a row in 2014 and 2015, technical mistakes at Worlds - as well as the unexpected rise of Papadakis/Cizeron - left Weaver/Poje without their coveted World title. Seeking a change, they switched coaches and began to revamp their skating from scratch in the 2016-17 season. Although they did not qualify for the Grand Prix Final or medal at major international competitions last season, Weaver/Poje are still very much in the mix to challenge for podium spots. They debuted their new programs this season at Autumn Classic International, placing second behind Virtue/Moir. Weaver/Poje will face Virtue/Moir and Americans Madison Hubbell/Zachary Donohue at Skate Canada, and Papadakis/Cizeron and Chock/Bates at Internationaux de France.
Random off-ice facts: Kaitlyn was born in Texas and moved to Canada in order to compete with Andrew.

EKATERINA BOBROVA / DMITRI SOLOVIEV
Representing: Russia
Ages: 27/28
ISU Personal bests: SD 76.18, FD 111.76, total 186.68
ISU Season’s best: 181.92
Notable titles: 2013 World Bronze Medalists, 2013 European Champions, 5-time European Medalists, 6-time Russian National Champions
Programs: SD - Latin Lover/Dance/Quand je vois tes yeux; FD - Oblivion/Beethoven’s Five Secrets
Grand Prix events: Rostelecom Cup, Cup of China
Bobrova/Soloviev’s career has seen its share of dramatic ups and downs. European Champions and World Bronze Medalists in 2013, they finished 5th at the Sochi Olympics, missed the 2014-15 season due to injury, and made a strong return in 2015-16 only to miss the 2016 World Championships due to a failed drug test for Ekaterina. Bobrova/Soloviev were eventually allowed to return to competition after WADA clarified their position on meldonium, and the team had solid showings in the 2016-17 season, placing 4th at the 2016 Grand Prix Final, 3rd at the 2017 European Championships, and 5th at the 2017 World Championships. Along with a multitude of other teams, they are in the mix for that no.3 spot, and kicked off this season with a gold medal at Ondrej Nepela Trophy. Bobrova/Soloviev will face the Shibutanis and Canadians Piper Gilles/Paul Poirier at Rostelecom Cup, and Chock/Bates and Papadakis/Cizeron at Cup of China.

Notable titles: 2014 World Champions, 2014 European Champions, 5-time European Medalists, 2015 Grand Prix Final Bronze Medalists, 5-time Italian National Champions
Programs: SD - Kaboom/Skip to the Bip/1008 Samba; FD - La Vita e Bella
Grand Prix events: NHK Trophy, Skate America
Another veteran team, fan favorites Cappellini/Lanotte are loved for their charisma and fun personalities in both competitions and galas. They excel at playing characters in their programs, seen especially in programs such as last season’s whimsical “Charlie Chaplin” free dance. Cappellini/Lanotte were the surprise winners of both the European and World Championships in 2014, and although they have not climbed to such heights again since, they have remained one of the world’s top teams and have consistently medaled at the European Championships for the last five seasons in a row. Unfortunately, Anna suffered a hand injury before this season began, and the team was forced to withdraw from their pre-Grand Prix competitions. They will make their season debut at NHK Trophy, where they will face Virtue/Moir and Hubbell/Donohue; at Skate America, they will compete against Gilles/Poirier and the Shibutanis.
Random off-ice facts: Anna married Italian pairs skater Ondrej Hotarek in 2015. Luca is a proud father.

Ages: 26/26
ISU Personal bests: SD 76.53, FD 108.37, total 180.82

Notable titles: 2014 Four Continents Champions, 4-time US National Bronze Medalists
Programs: SD - Le Serpent/Cuando Calienta El Sol/Sambando; FD - Across the Sky/Caught Out in the Rain
Grand Prix events: Skate Canada, NHK Trophy
Consistently the third-ranked American team for the last three seasons, Hubbell/Donohue are hungry this season and ready for more. Since switching coaches in 2015 to Dubreuil and Lauzon in Montreal - the same coaches as Virtue/Moir and Papadakis/Cizeron - Hubbell/Donohue have made steady upwards progress, culminating in a surprising third-place finish in the short dance at the 2017 World Championships. With a World medal within their grasp, the team made costly mistakes in the free dance and finished a devastating 9th. They are back this season to show what they’re capable of, winning a gold medal at the season-opening US International Skating Classic with strong performances. If Hubbell/Donohue can back up their captivating chemistry and expressiveness with consistent skating, they may be able to earn a place as one of the heavy hitters of the ice dance field. Hubbell/Donohue will compete against Virtue/Moir at both Skate Canada and NHK Trophy, as well as Weaver/Poje in Canada and Cappellini/Lanotte in Japan.
Random off-ice facts: Zach always brings the same pair of shoes and his lucky bracelet when he travels to competitions. Madison likes to bring her favorite food.

Programs: SD - Bossa Cubana/Gopher Mambo; FD - Film Noir Medley
Grand Prix events: Rostelecom Cup, Skate America
Since teaming up in 2011, Gilles/Poirier have made a name for themselves as the team with unusual and sometimes downright weird programs. Their skating isn’t all just for show, though - in the last few seasons, they’ve steadily risen up the international ranks, medaling at several Grand Prix events and coming close to qualifying for the Final. Consistent performances in the future may establish them as a top-tier team. They started off this season with a bronze medal at Autumn Classic International behind Virtue/Moir and Weaver/Poje. Gilles/Poirier will face Bobrova/Soloviev and the Shibutanis at Rostelecom Cup, and the Shibutanis and Cappellini/Lanotte at Skate America.
Random off-ice facts: According to their ISU biography, Piper enjoys riding elephants, unicycling, and miming on street corners. Paul knows 3 languages (English, French, Spanish). Piper was born in the USA.

New Mexico's Alejandra Gonzalez was the first runner up, and the second runner up during the competition was Oklahoma's Triana Browne. https://www.instagram.com/p/B5nO5h-FBqW/ Following her own wins, Kaliegh Garris as Miss Teen USA 2019, and Nia Franklin as Miss America 2019, all three major American pageants have been won by African American women as the first year in American history. stuff i read November 2019
Brandon Sanderson, Words of Radiance (2014) (Stormlight Archive #2) “I don’t want my life to change because I’ve become a lighteyes … I want the lives of people like me—like I am now—to change.” Kaladin Stormblessed, ACTUAL LOVE OF MY LIFE. Contrast: Dalinar whose “well you just have to be twice as good by distinguishing yourself in the position I gave you, that’s how you change the world” rhetoric makes my skin crawl. Nah it ain’t fam. Dalinar may be be a good person who has never personally mistreated a darkeyes, but that’s beside the point. He still benefits from a highly unequal, unjust arrangement that places him at the tippy top of the social, economic & political pyramid. And the parshmen at the bottom. If the next book isn’t 100% about Parshmen Rights I'm outta here. this book—well there were moments i was on my feet cheering, like that four-on-one-duel where Kaladin is the only one with the cojones to jump into the ring, and Adolin’s “bridgeboy” goes from a term of disparagement to a term of endearment. When we found out the Shardbearer whom Kaladin killed in Amaram’s service was Shallan’s brother that was WELL-PLAYED SIR that punch really landed. Renarin turning out to be a Radiant is a pretty harsh indictment of the overvaluation of martial prowess, and I liked that too, but on the whole I didn’t like this book as much as Book 1 because I wanted MOAR KALADIN.
Arkady Martine, A Memory Called Empire (2019) “Nothing empire touches remains itself.” They say that science fiction is psychology and fantasy is sociology. If that’s true (and I don’t remember where I heard it) this book bucks that trend because it’s all in for both sci-fi (it’s a space opera!) and sociology. It’s been getting a lot of well-deserved buzz and I really enjoyed it. I do think it’s fair to point out it’s a story centered on whip-smart highly-educated bureaucrats and the imperial court they orbit; that the perspective of “ordinary” people is missing, and you feel the lack because in the course of the book there’s a revolution/coup?? But I mean, if you think about the Roman Empire (the author is a Byzantine scholar) the kinds of “barbarians” it attracted were always from the better-off stratum of “barbarian” society. I guess the chimney sweeps wouldn’t have been reading Catullus. Nothing empire touches remains itself.
Robert Galbraith, Lethal White (2018) (Cormoran Strike Mysteries #4) The unresolved tension between the leads is A+ 10/10 but I feel like the actual mystery plot is not resolved as elegantly as I expected from JK Rowling? She’s like, the queen of tight plotting and I didn’t think she’d just round up 7 suspects only to let 6 of them off the hook with an apologetic shrug of “whoops that was a red herring.” There’s a metric shitton of gratuitous bashing of socialists & other lefties, which didn’t even faze me. What bothered me was the novel’s unevenness. The portion of it that was dedicated to character work was phenomenal. Rowling’s always had a gift for invoking petty and/or aggrieved secondary characters and she absolutely nailed it here, plus the main characters experience extraordinary personal growth while still bearing the scars of their traumas. Yet tbh Chamber of Secrets is a better mystery novel and I say this as someone who ranks Chamber of Secrets dead last on my personal “HP books, ranked” listicle.
Silvia Federici, Caliban and the Witch: Women, the body, and primitive accumulation (2004) Pluses of academic writing: you get to raid the ENDNOTES and BIBLIOGRAPHY for more texts devoted to your topic of interest. Minuses of academic writing: dense as hell, puts you to sleep. Praise be to Silvia Federici whose arguments are uncommonly lucid and contain almost no bloat, though the sections covering the New World are definitely weaker than the European sections, which is where Federici’s speciality lies. She argues that the witch hunts of the late Middle Ages were a political project, a campaign of terror designed to decimate the power of peasant women, sever them from their communities, and subjugate their reproductive capacities to doing USEFUL stuff like accumulating surplus for capitalists. The parallel between the enclosure of public commons and the enclosure of women’s bodies & labor power—all done with an eye towards private profit—is one that will haunt me for the rest of my life. What an absolutely staggering work of scholarship. So glad I sprung for the physical copy so I could annotate copiously.
Louisa May Alcott, Little Women (1848) It’s been 20 years and I’m still salty about Jo/Laurie. This is the first time I’ve actually reread it cover-to-cover instead of just reimbibing the shippiest bits and I gotta say, props to Louisa May Alcott who is a much better writer than I recalled. Her treatment of the process and the craft of writing is also right on; the 1994 movie by contrast just has Jo climb up into the garret and don her writing hat and hey presto, a manuscript. What I’d forgotten was Alcott’s mastery of tone to skewer a character—I don’t wanna say she rivals Jane Austen in this department but she comes close. I had also forgotten how much of Part I in particular is just Jo repressing her desire to marry Beth and cart her off to a lesbian utopia bursting with grand pianos. My girl is dead set against any of her sisters marrying, insists she’ll man up herself in order to keep the family intact, and if you only read Part I you may well conclude she’s not wrong. Part II is painful because it’s where Alcott sinks my ship. Hate to say I can see why she does it?? It’s because Amy and Laurie have the most to learn from each other, and Alcott is all about GROWING and LEARNING as a person. You know what, the text doesn’t belong to Alcott. The text belongs to all of us, and I will proclaim Death of the Author from the rooftops. Jo and Laurie love each other without labels, they’re not “romantic” or “platonic,” they set no limits on that love.
Cat Sebastian, The Lawrence Browne Affair (2017) (Turner Series #2) You know why this mlm Regency was absolutely DELIGHTFUL? Because it’s literally kidfic. They bond over the kid, that’s the story. It’s not the whole story, I just mean the arrival of the kid kicks the plot into high gear, even if there isn’t undue focus on the kid as a character in his own right. God this book is so relatable: They both have the worst case of imposter syndrome. “Neither of us is normal but have we ever thought to question whether fitting in is good, or normality is desirable?” It’s that trope where “I’ve insinuated myself into your life under false pretenses and now I’ve gone and fallen in love with you, how do I make a clean breast of it,” meanwhile your romantic interest knows FULL WELL you’re a con artist and it doesn’t lessen their attachment in the slightest. Also relatable: Lawrence likes being alone, clings to routine because unscripted social interactions give him anxiety.
Bernard Cornwell, The Last Kingdom (2004) (Saxon Stories #1) I marathoned all three seasons of the BBC/Netflix adaptation earlier this year and I gotta say, lead actor Alexander Dreymon and his combination of martial arts background and tenderness 100% makes the character. Whoever does the score for the show also knocked it out of the park. In comparison, the book falls flat. Uhtred comes off as merely bratty rather than deeply conflicted in his loyalties, which could be a function of his extreme youth—he’s 18 I think at the end of this installment. The Danish vs Saxon identity contest is less prominent here; he pretty much accepts he’s a Saxon. @Bernard Cornwell your English ass is showing. There isn’t a real tight three-act structure, the plot just sort of meanders along from one battle to another (which is a hallmark of Cornwell’s writing, and never bothered me in his Grail Quest trilogy which are some of my favorite books of all time, so idk why it seems like weak sauce here) . One thing that remains constant is that Uhtred becomes irrational when threatened with the loss of things or people he considers MINE. Uhtred: sees a random dog paddling along in the middle of a storm. Uhtred: IS THAT RAGNAR’S DOG. Lmao.
Brandon Sanderson Oathbringer (2017) (Stormlight Archive #3) I opened this book with some trepidation because it is Dalinar’s book, the way Book 1 was Kaladin’s book and Book 2 was Shallan’s. I mean, all the flashbacks belong to Dalinar. You can tell Brandon Sanderson built this world around Dalinar, that Dalinar is more foundational to this ‘verse than any other character. And I gotta hand it to him, when I put the book down there were actual tears in my eyes: “The ancient code of the Knights Radiant says ‘journey before destination.’ But if we stop, if we accept the person we are when we fall, he journey ends. That failure becomes our destination. To love to journey is to accept no such end. I have found, through painful experience, that the most important step a person can take is always the next one.” I think about when Kaladin took the first oath way back in Book 1, when we first heard “journey before destination,” and I say BRAVO SIR BRAVO. I think about how Gavilar’s assassination is this primordial scene we keep circling back to; with each new book we return to the scene of the crime with a different POV and we keep peeling back the layers and upending everything we thought we knew. Other things I am here for: Shallan referring to Kaladin internally as Brightlord Brooding Eyes (I’m still recovering from how Sanderson sank my Kaladin/Shallan ship). Kaladin running into his archnemesis & ex-bully and all he can think is “Adolin would never be caught dead in a coat three seasons out of date” lmao Kaladin x Adolin brOTP of the century. Ok but remember how I said while I was reading Book 2 “I hope Book 3 is 100% Rights for Parshmen”??? Well I called it didn’t I. Turns out humankind are the invaders—they literally rolled up from another planet which they had accidentally destroyed, they came as refugees and they proceeded to…enslave the indigenous parshmen. What. The fuck. Brandon Sanderson was born and raised in the USA, where the ideology of settler colonialism is fucking hegemonic. We are REALLY GOOD at conflating preemptive warfare with self-defense, dispossession with property rights enforcement. We tend to think of democratic self-rule as coextensive with coercive rule over alien subjects. Sanderson’s choice to dismiss out of hand the “would you give the land back to the parshmen” argument is troubling because it absolutely bolsters the settler colonial narrative that indigenous elimination is a necessary condition of settlers’ “freedom”. I realize that the parshmen are currently being led by Hitler but that’s a choice on Sanderson’s part. Giving us 95% human POVs is a choice. This is the story of humans reckoning with their blood-soaked history, not the story of parshmen throwing off their chains.
