St Malo to Nice - Day 9

Today was the BIG day, when we finally got to see if all the days leading up to this would help or hinder us as we took on the might of Mount Ventoux. To say we were a little anxious about today would be an understatement. Mount Ventoux is the stuff of folklore and cycling history through the years and is on every self-respecting cyclists bucket list.

This was the view from the hotel.

I should casually mention that in addition to Mount Ventoux, we'd also be cycling a total of 160km today and just shy of 3000m of climbing.

We set off from Bedoin at around 8.15am and we were straight into the early stages of the climb up Ventoux. The early km's are at a modest 3-4%, giving you a little, but not enough time, to warm your legs up. And then before you know it you're into the trees and you face around 12km of 9-12% gradients. This was by far the hardest part of the climb because there's not much to distract you in the trees, You can't look around or focus on far-off places so it's a question of grinding (and grinding I did) away, trying to establish a pedal and breathing rhythm. It was hard. Really hard.

Derek, our tour guide, said that by the time you reach Chalet Raynard you've done the hardest bit. And I understand what he means because the gradient does drop to between 8-10% (predominantly) but what protection I had from the trees was no longer there and I faced headwinds for longish streches that got stronger the higher I went.

The final 1.5km was brutal. So close, I couldn't imagine giving up, but the headwind and the gradient and the tirdness in my legs meant that at time I felt I had very little forward movement or momentum. The final 400m ramps up also and one final turn and the short ramp up to the summit and it was done.

It's hard to find the full Ventoux segment on Strava but I'm confident that I came in at under 2 hours (I think it was around 1hr 50m) which I will take any day.

The views from the summit were amazing.

After we congratulated each other, took photos, did more congratulations etc etc. it was time to move on so we descended to Chalet Reynard.

I stopped at the Tom Simpson memorial to pay my respects....

Before carrying on and meeting at Chalet Reynard where I had a coffee and we then made our way down the different route towards Sault. The descent was wonderful and fast and a reward for such a hard start to the day. In Sault we sopped for a quick pastry before heading off towards Saint-Trist.

Beyond there we started to see fields and fields of Lavender in Revest-du-Bion.

And then came the next big climb of the day, which whilst it was only 4k, did rise 300m or so, and were punishing on already tired legs.

The rest stopped for lunch at the top of the climb but at 60k in, it was too early for me so David and I continued to ride and we eventually has lunch at Forcalquier, which was just over 100k into the ride.

After that we continued to roll with the terrain and had some nice views and fun descents, but it was difficult to gain momentum and it got increasingly hot, the drivers increasingly impatient and generally I just got to the point where I wanted today to end.

We stopped in Riez for an ice-cream and drink before making our final passage to Moustiers-Ste-Marie where we'd stay. Exhausted but satisfied with a hard day in the saddle completed successfully.

So today ticked off a big bucket list challeneg for me and tomrorow, being day 10 and hopefully arriving in Nice, we will conclude our tour, but we have a few big climbs tomorrow to conquer before we can celebrate on the beach.
