Jayson Tatum Knows He Is Not Who The Media Wants Him To Be

In the build up to game 3 on Wednesday night, Jayson Tatum said a few things that would have caught fans and media’s attention regarding where he ranks among the NBA’s best players

Tatum states that he has no idea where the narrative of him being a top 5 player comes from and to some it may appear that Tatum is backing away from the lime light somewhat.

I think Tatum is just honest with himself.

He knows that the media is setting him up for a narrative they want him to live up to and they are not concerned whether this helps or hurts his career long term.

Shannon Sharpe went on Fox Sports’ Undisputed and put on an absolute display of media ignorance when he declared that Tatum doesn’t decide whether he’s top 5, the media does.

That right there, is the exact kind of out of touch dissonance that the American sports media are famous for.

If the athlete you’re covering, doesn’t believe in the narrative that you’re essentially building on his behalf, then that’s a big deal and more importantly, it likely means that you cannot continue to push that narrative, or at the least hold the subject to the standards being imposed on them via the narrative.

Colin Cowherd, always a defender of dishonesty on the part of the media, tried his level best to interpret Tatum’s honesty as weakness and Tatum is doing well to block out the noise and play his best ball while not feeling the need to live up to the crusty old guys who just say things because their jobs are easier when they have talking points, and when athletes lean in and embrace those talking points.

I’m glad that Tatum is somewhat honest with himself and his game 3 performance was great, he lead the Celtics in an emphatic win and his 26 points, 6 rebounds and 9 assists were as impressive a stat line and more importantly it was an impactful 26 point outing.

All told, the media have been trying to force a narrative that eve the guy they’re reporting on doesn’t believe in, and I’ll say this again, a lot of this comes down to people not wanting to acknowledge Giannis, and people trying to elevate Tatum based on his style of play rather than his production.

Boston will be that much better for having a star player that doesn’t allow the media to dictate what the story will be.
