#NETTLES ON TOP
Text
Me waking up to a bunch of comments on my post about Rhaenyra and Nettles proving my point that society will literally coddle a white woman when she’s being racist and give her a thousand excuses they give nobody else.
Tumblr media
But anyways @bohemian-nights summarized all I had to say:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That’s all that really needs to be said.

Corlys and Nettles should have a dad daughter relationship.
Tumblr media
All offense to Daemon, but I don't care about his dad daughter relationship with anyone but his daughters. He has sons, children, and priorities to take care of.
Tumblr media
I know y'all tend not to care about black characters interacting, but I think unc is a good person to put that paternal idea y'all have about Nettles to.
He loses the last of his immediate family in the war, and because of Rhaenyra and Daemon.
Rhaena is sent away and he and Baela are grieving Rhaenys.
Addam and Alyn come into the picture. At this point he's lost Luke, Vaemond and Laenor almost losing Alyn in the same search for power that cost him his brother.
Then, the only other dragonrider to be found on Driftmark is a young black girl who he never claims is Velayron.
In the books, it is obvious why, but in the show, currently, it adds nuance to his character. Now, blood over name is the thing that keeps him in the war without his wife at his side.
Now he's playing to ensure his blood on his seat. Something that was taken away by the same woman who originally didn't give him a true heir cost him his heir and his wife. Unc is hitting a devious lick, and I'm supporting his villan era.
But that doesn't sideline Nettles from his story or him from hers. In the books, his defense for her alleged betrayal is that even though she's dirty and ugly, she isn't guilty of treason.
But if we build or acknowledge a fondness he has for her, say like her being caring about Alyn after or her reminding him of young Rhaenys and Laena. Her genuinely not caring about blood or name to earn her way, never claiming anyone. It adds nuance.
It makes him take a girl under his wing, not because he has too but because he understands the importance of having it. He doesn't comfort her, but there is a clear understanding over the loss of Driftmark they both share. It's the only home Nettles knows, and it's the one Corlys built by himself.
Tumblr media
I love being delusional.

Before we got the Nettles siting my personal favorite fancast(s) were, Arsema Thomas, Kiki Layne, and Crystal Clarke. There all older than what Nettles is supposed to be but so is pretty much everyone 🙃 Either way they can’t keep it a secret forever. At least now I can sleep peacefully knowing it’s a matter of when and not if lol.
All excellent picks 🙌🏽 Arsema especially blew me away with her performance as young Lady Danbury and I await her next role with bated breath.
Lol, yeah they’ve chosen older actors for all of the older young characters so 🤷🏽‍♀️(and allegedly the actress playing Nettles is in her early 30s 🤐)
My top pick(if someone put me in charge of casting and let me hire my fellow Americans😶 ) would be Tiffany Boone(who should get more work than what she does) and she’s turning 36 next month 🤷🏽‍♀️
Tumblr media
They really are trying to keep us in suspense by not announcing who she is, but thank God the Nettles will be replaced with Rhaena bs has been put to bed.

Spinning a little again after a long hiatus has reawakened my desire to do my plan for an extremely laborous cosplay of the prince from The Wild Swans who only partially transformed back into a human.
The story is basically that a king had a daughter and several (the number varies) sons and his evil new wife who learned witchcraft from her mother gets jealous of them and turns the princes into swans (you know how stepmothers are) and banishes the princess after making her Unrecognisable by ripping her dress and dirtying her face and hair.
The princess finds her brothers (and sometimes some fairies) and learns that she can turn them back into humans if she had makes them shirts that are knit from yarn that she spins out out of stinging nettles (sometimes within a time frame of a certain number of years). One of the conditions of this magic is that she has to remain under a vow of silence or her brothers will die(/remain swans forever).
At some point she gets married to a king from Some Other Kingdom who takes a fancy to her, whose own evil mother (who is sometimes an archbishop, presumably to switch up the evil mothers theme a bit) tries to have her burned as a witch (her husband goes along with this because the queen hides each of her children after she gives birth and claims that she commited infanticide in some versions, but in others he's just kind of a pushover) because she doesn't talk and keeps going into the graveyard at night to get nettles. The princess keeps knitting as long as she can and then her brothers come to rescue her as she's on the pyre and she throws the shirts over them and they turn back into humans. The youngest prince still has a wing for an arm though, because she hadn't finished the last sleeve.
So my very good plan, which is not at all overambitious to the point of stupidity, is to spin ramie (nettle fibre) into yarn and design and knit a one-armed sweater (possibly with a lace feather pattern on parts of it?) and make a single wing After Some Fashion (but probably modeled closely on this tutorial and... idk. Wear some poofy trousers and a crown. I haven't thought the non-sweater and wing elements out very fully.
The ramie top I have is bleached, so I want to dye it green. I think I will probably dye the fibre or yarn and almost certainly not piece or garment dye it, because if I spun all the yarn and knit the whole thing and then ruined it that would be Rather Sad. I kinda do want to naturally dye it, but natural dyeing can be a little unpredictable and apparently green can be a little tricky to do anyway and cellulose fibres are harder to dye than protein fibre, so I may just use a fibre reactive dye like Dylon and use less of it than they recommend for the amount of fibre, so that I don't get the full depth of shade and it's a bit faded and more... idk "natural" looking.
Re: dyeing though, I want to imitate the colour of nettles, even though a completely "accurate" version of what a shirt that the princess in the story would have knit would look like would probably be a sort of brown, because her yarn was undyed nettle fibre. Also, I do not think she was messing around with lace patterns, given that she was on the clock on this. Of course, maybe she too overcomplicated things and was merrily designing lace patterns for the first four years and then got a bit crunched for time towards the end. Explains why she had to keep going back to the graveyard for nettles too: she didn't process enough nettles into fibre at the start of the project and then she kept losing yarn chicken as she was knitting and had to go back to step one. These princesses, they can be a little inefficient! But in her defense, she was under a lot of stress.
Also, having now written this out, this is all kind of Gender (nettle shirt as transition metaphor) and I am simultaneously the prince with the wing and the princess who is trying to save him. Somehow after having had this vague plan for a cosplay for... maybe ten years, I think that this is the first time I am coming to this realisation.

Also to the alys point… I just really dislike that she either has to be girlboss femme fatal extreme or perfect victim number 3. Both just seem like such hallow interpretations. First and foremost, I’d like a clear backstory for her before Aemond even joins the picture. Or something like that down the line. The best way to make her as awesome as she can be is giving her a story/agency outside of Aemond or even the strongs.
Idk I just hope whatever they do, it’s good and fleshed out. But even then… who knows how people will respond if she does not fall into one or two camps I listed before. I truly worry that it’s gonna be another Alicent situation where the writers actually make really good changes/adjustments, just for people to not get it because she’s not “right” type of female protagonist you can “root” for. The character (and unfortunately whatever actress they get) will already come into the season with people disliking her. And I reiterate this point for Nettles (and Sara snow if they make her “real”).

I wish hotd had more likeable characters. I don’t like anyone except Rhaena, Baela, Tyland, and the Cargyll twins. Everyone else is boring and/or stupid. Now I’m forced to wait for Daeron to care about someone else 😭 If they ruin him I stg
I loved almost every character in GOT now I couldn’t care less about these deaths 😂 I’m actually gonna be cheering a few on

I think ramie is officially my favorite plant based fiber for spinning
Even after plying (bracelet, so 2-ply) it’s definitely one of the finest things I’ve ever spun and I wasn’t even trying that hard
The texture may seem a little sketchy at first but by the time it was all spun/plied/rested a little bit it’s very nice
And although I think I’d stick to wool if I was doing something like trance work, I found meditating while spinning this to be very pleasant (once you get into it a little bit) and I would definitely like to explore that more

Have you noticed that the f*cked up stuff Rhaenyra says about Nettles matches a description that septon Eustace (I think) gives Nettles earlier? Though I still think it is entirely possible she said this things!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So these are the descriptions we are given about Nettles. I think the most important descriptions about her come from the last picture because that's the one that's agreed on, no crooked teeth, no scar, what they all agree on is she was skinny, brown skinned, black haired, and brown eyed.
I don't think it's a similar enough description, though, to discount what Rhaenyra said. She wasn't really going after Nettles' 'flaws', more so her original description. What Rhaenyra says is that Nettles is too common to seduce Daemon. Then, directly after she comes after the agreed on appearance of her to say she couldn't tame a dragon or seduce Daemon without spells.
What Eustace is doing is pointing out the reasons the prince wouldn't take her to bed by saying she isn't traditionally attractive or pretty (it's Daemon Targaryen, son of Alyssa, Bawdy Wench with a crooked nose and different colouring but I digress). But he doesn't use the idea of her description. It's the crooked teeth and slit nose he uses to discredit the idea.
So they are using different reasoning to come to different reasoning. Nyra says they are having sex but that Nettles used spells to seduce/ control Daemon to do it. Giving him plausible deniability when he returns to her and not holding him accountable to any more than likely consensual actions he participated in.
Septon Eustace is saying that Daemon had autonomy but would never sleep with her because she's too ugly.
They're working with different ideas and implications for what happened between them, so I don't think he'd go out of his way (this time) to change her words.
Again, I'd like to shout out Uncle Corlys, who calls her ill-favored.
So overall, they have different conclusions as to what is going on.

Favorite Nettles headcanon?
I like imagining that she wasn’t always a homeless orphan. She doesn’t know who her father is, and her mother was a prostitute, but that doesn’t mean that she was never there for her or that she wasn’t a good mother despite their circumstances.
I think it’s just too sad to imagine that she never had anyone before Daemon who loved her and cared for her. That her life had always been so bleak before the Dance.
I like to imagine that her mother was there for her in the for about the first 4-8 years of her life before she was taken away by an illness. They didn’t have much, but they had each other. It was those memories with her mother that kept Nettles going when things seemed as if there was nothing left for her.
