Stunning Fog Waves Rolling Over Landscapes
Nicholas Steinberg has captured the dynamic beauty of the San Francisco Bay Area, and the way the ocean interacts with the nearby land, creating dramatic mountains and valleys of fog that roll over the hillsides of Marin county. Many of them captured from the vantage point of Mount Tamalpais State Park, the rolling clouds and fog create effects that resemble ocean waves and streaming currents,…

Interview with Shaina Steinberg
Under the Paper Moon
Evelyn Bishop and Nick Gallagher Book 1
Kensington Pub
April 23rd, 2024
Under The Paper Moon by Shaina Steinberg is a fun read.  Between the scenes of WWII and the murder of someone in 1948 this blends a mystery and thriller. There is love, duty, loyalty, and forgiveness.
The heroine, Evelyn Bishop, has joined the OSS as a spy.  Besides wanting to help the allies she is trying to rescue her brother, held in a German POW camp. Her supervisor is Nick Gallagher.  They become intimate and grow close during the war until he betrays her.
Six years later, Evelyn is working as a private investigator. After trailing a suspected cheating husband, the suspect is murdered. Evelyn finds out that Nick is also a PI, who was working with the murdered victim. Teaming up for a final mission, Evelyn and Nick begin to uncover the true nature of her case, realizing that the war has followed them home.
The banter in the story adds humor to the story. There is a lot of action with some romance that includes a love triangle.
Elise Cooper: How did you get the idea for the series?
Shaina Steinberg: This is the first in a three-book deal, but I am hoping that I can continue writing more in the series. I love old movies and I started to watch movies from the 1940s.  These had strong women like Katherine Hepburn or Ingrid Bergman. This is partly why I set it during this period.  Plus, there is a correlation with my grandmother who was a strong and vibrant woman.  She got married and did everything society expected of her. She had regrets because she really wanted to be a doctor or a nurse. She did not have many options in her life.  My heroine, Evelyn, explores what my grandmother could have been.
EC: How did you get the idea for this story?
SS: I have been fascinated by WWII and my father read bedtime stories written by Elie Wiesel. He always said, ‘it can happen here so we must be vigilant.’  I see this is as a story that delved into the war, but not just that aspect.  It shows what war can do to someone and the sacrifices made, especially what a parent would do to keep their child safe.
EC: Do you think there is a corollary between being a spy and a private investigator?
SS: Absolutely. Evelyn as a spy was extremely competent.  She was taught to be undetected and how to notice small clues that might lead to something bigger.
EC:  How would you describe Evelyn?
SS:  She is very talented, good with a gun and able to speak five languages. She is a feminist and loves the adrenaline rush. She could be selfish, petty, sarcastic, stubborn but is also loyal, fearless, funny, and brave. She is from a privileged background. But after the war, her eyes are open, which gives her empathy.
EC:  As with many of those in the military who have retired, they miss it.  Please explain how you explored this in the story with Evelyn.
SS: There were two quotes in the book that refer to this.  The first, “There is no place for me. Not here. Not there. Not anywhere.” The second, “Those first week’s home Evelyn felt as if she was under water. Sometimes it felt like sitting on the ocean floor with the weight of the water pressing down on her.” The second quote is like someone grieving and that grief encompasses everything in someone’s life. While later, after the grief is not so fresh, the person can be functional. The weight of the ocean water is the numbness. The first quote refers to how after the war she feels useless. Evelyn does not want to be a stay-at-home wife because she actively saved lives during the war and had a sense of purpose.
EC:  How would you describe the hero, Nick?
SS:  He was Evelyn’s commander during the war. During the war he felt fulfillment, a sense of purpose, confident, fearless, and self-assured. Now, after the war he feels hopeless with a sense of failure.  He feels rage and anger. The anger is an undercurrent as to when he was abandoned by his family when he was so young, feeling his life was unjust and unfair.  He uses that anger to motivate him.
EC: What about the relationship between Evelyn and Nick?
SS:  Evelyn gave him stability, hope, and happiness.  During the war they were bonded by danger.  They are in love even though he betrayed her. From Evelyn he saw that she is kind, good, and has a belief in the goodness in people. Nick sees the world from her point of view, through her eyes. Nick gets a sense of purpose from Evelyn. I think she helps him channel all his anger into ways he can help others. After the war when he loses her, he loses his sense of purpose.  I also think the war gave her a sense of purpose. She felt like she was doing something important that could save lives. I think a big part of Nick’s appeal is that he was her partner in that purpose, and he never thought of her as anything less than strong and capable.
EC:  Is there a love triangle between Evelyn, Nick, and her current fiancé?
SS:  Yes.  There is a scene in the book where Evelyn describes James, her current fiancé,as “romantic, sweet, kind, and chivalrous.”  Nick sees James as “desperate, needy, and old-fashioned.” If there was never WWII, she probably would have married James when she was twenty-two. Before she went to war that would have been enough because she did not know anything different.  To her James is safe and represents her being home and her innocence as well as her living breathing connection to her brother.  But what he represents is not enough for her anymore. Evelyn does not see a compability between her world before the war and one after the war. Her appeal for Nick is beyond more than their chemistry, but he was also there when she grew into the person she is now. But because of his betrayal she questions everything she saw and knew about him as well as how she sees herself.
EC:  What is the relevance of the song, “Paper Moon?”
SS: Everything she felt about Nick was turned around once she thought he betrayed her. The song represents the way Evelyn sees their love. She thought their love was real and after he betrayed her, she now feels it was hollow. On a personal level it was one of my grandmother’s favorite songs, so it reminds me of her.
EC:  Next book?
SS:  It will be published in May of next year, with a working title An Unquiet Peace. One of my regrets was that I did not explore Evelyn’s female friendships in this book, but it is part of the second book. There are still conflicts between Nick and Evelyn. It will take place in October 1948 around the Berlin Airlift. Nick also has a case of a woman who wants to leave her marriage.
THANK YOU!!

The Notebook. Theater Review.
Upload ImageEmbed VideoUnsplash image
Click to update image
"The Notebook" is based on the 1996 novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks. The 2004 movie was directed by Nick Cassavetes, from a screenplay by Jeremy Leven and Jan Sardi. In its current Broadway production, the book is by Bekah Brunstetter and the music and lyrics is by Ingrid Michaelson.
The musical has two directors: four time Tony nominee Michael Greif and Schele Williams who is making a Broadway debut. Williams is also going to be directing the highly anticipated "The Wiz" which is opening in April.
In the current musical we get three Noah's and three Allie's... younger, middle and older. For the most part the six are good; I thought that the younger Allie (Jordan Tyson) was woefully miscast. Where Allie came from money, was a proper girl, this younger Allie ex-hued none of that. More like an inner city persona, Tyson was just not believable.
In Brett J. Banakis gorgeous set design we get a wonderful slide movement throughout the two hours fifteen minutes.Equally as effective is the sound by Nevin Steinberg and the costumes by Paloma Young. The effective orange and blue lighting by Ben Stanton too made the mood well in tune with the plot.
The musical for the most part was very similar to the movie, two young people fall deeply in love with one another and even though ten years has gone by, they never stop thinking of each other. The key to the musicals success is that the three different sets of Noah and Allie need to all be effective. Whereas Maryann Plunkett as the elder and Dorian Harewood as the husband are excellent, we get the best interaction between Joy Woods and Ryan Vasquez, the middle aged actors; their singing and body language is captivating. The two are silky smooth on stage! Even though John Cardoza holds up his end as the younger Noah, it is Tyson who is an anchor around his neck. Even though Tyson has a very good singing voice, her Broadway debut falls flat.
The two opening scenes, both first act and second act fire on all cylinders. It is the second act, however, where this show excels. The songs, the pace and the story all come together nicely. Songs like "We Have To Try", "Forever", "It's Not Easy", "I Know" and "Coda" were all well sung songs; the lyrics too were catchy and fit the moment of the plot. The first act too had some nice songs: "Time", "Leave The Light On", "If This Is Love" were most memorable. Having some great moments in the first act, it still didn't compare the the afternoons second act.
For the romantics out there, "The Notebook" is for the most part an entertaining show. The choreography (Katie Spelman) is underwhelming, as is some of the ensemble cast. Allie's parents: Andrea Burns and Charles E. Wallace are not moving in their parts. Burns was much more effective in her role as nurse Lori.Neither actor brought depth as parents to Allie, they were mostly robotic and aloof.
.....................................................................................................................
Next up is Water for Elephants at The Imperial Theatre. This musical is based on the circus and maybe a real sleeper when it comes a show that may just wow the audience.
Since many good shows have opened but unexpectedly closed in a rather quick fashion (Spamelot, Days of Wine and Roses, Shucked), this musical may surprise to the upside.
It seems that shows that aren't unanimously well received, and in Shucked case was, are closing with not spending much time on the great white way.

Happy 15th wedding anniversary to me! ❤️ As I celebrate this special day with my beloved partner, I can't help but think about the song that was chosen for our first dance - "I'll Stand by You" by The Pretenders.
This beautiful song was released in 1994 and became an instant hit, reaching the top 20 in several countries. It was written by Chrissie Hynde, the lead singer of The Pretenders, along with Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg.
The Pretenders are a British-American rock band formed in 1978, and they have gone through several tragedies throughout their career. In 1982, two of the band members - guitarist James Honeyman-Scott and bassist Pete Farndon - died within a year of each other due to drug-related issues. Despite these devastating losses, The Pretenders continued to create music and tour.
Today, The Pretenders consist of Chrissie Hynde (the only original member), Martin Chambers, Nick Wilkinson, and James Walbourne. They have released over ten studio albums and are still making music and touring today.
Did you know that Chrissie Hynde was once a journalist and music critic before she formed the band?
Thank you, The Pretenders, for creating such a beautiful and timeless song that has become a significant part of my life.

Snoop Dogg Associate Joins Gala Music Board, Death Row Records Steps Closer to Blockchain Commitment – Blockchain Bitcoin News
Tumblr media
After the rap star Snoop Dogg acquired Death Row Records in February, the hip-hop legend explained that he would transform Death Row into a non-fungible token (NFT) label backed by blockchain technology. On Thursday, Snoop’s brand partnership manager Nick Adler joined a newly-created Gala Music advisory board, alongside the record label executive DJ EFN, Grammy-nominated musician BT, and Tupac Shakur’s former manager Leila Steinberg.
Snoop’s Blockchain Ambitions
Snoop Dogg’s blockchain ambitions are gaining headway as the legendary rapper’s brand partnership manager Nick Adler joined Gala Music as an advisory board member. Snoop has been a fan of cryptocurrencies for close to a decade, and even accepted bitcoin (BTC) for his album back in 2013.
In more recent times, Snoop has been an avid fan and promoter of non-fungible token (NFT) technology. Over a year ago, Snoop revealed he was a crypto whale with millions of dollars worth of NFTs. At the time, he told the public he was “Cozomo de’ Medici,” a character on Twitter and known on NFT marketplaces like Opensea, that holds a massive stash of blue-chip NFTs.
At the beginning of 2022, headlines detailed that Snoop acquired the record label that helped catapult his music career — Death Row Records. The rapper purchased the label from MNRK Music Group and he released his 19th album called BODR. After the purchase, Snoop told the media that blockchain technology and NFTs would be an important element in Death Row’s ecosystem.
“Picture me taking one of my classic records that you love to death, and you’ve always cherished it and it means so much to you,” Snoop explained to the media publication Complex in April 2022. “Now you have the right to buy it and own it, and to trade it and to make money off of it. Now you actually own a piece of Snoop Dogg’s legacy as opposed to, I have a copy of his CD that I lost.”
During his interview Snoop added:
Now you actually own something that’s actually yours that you can profit off of. I just feel like that’s where the industry is headed. Being in it for so many years, 30 years strong. My fans coming to show up for me, me charging them for everything. T-shirts, concerts, this, that, but not giving them shit back. Don’t sit right.
Snoop’s Brand Manager Nick Adler Joins Newly Launched Gala Music Advisory Board, Legendary Rapper Disses Streaming Platforms
On Thursday, the blockchain music company Gala Music revealed that Snoop’s brand manager Nick Adler has joined a newly launched Gala Music advisory board. In the tweet, Gala shares a video of all the board members including the DJ and composer BT, Tupac Shakur’s former manager Leila Steinberg, and record producer DJ EFN. Speaking with Billboard.com contributor Benjamin James, the vice president and global head of music business at Gala Music, Brandon Tatum, spoke about the new advisory board.
“The creation of our advisory board is an exciting next step in Gala Music’s growth,” Tatum detailed. “We look forward to leveraging the knowledge and industry-specific wisdom of these entertainment industry experts to help guide the Gala team on its high-level vision and initiatives to increase our chances of sustainable success,” the Gala Music executive added.
In April 2022, Snoop appeared on the podcast “Drink Champs” and the rapper detailed that he was removing the Death Row Records catalog from streaming sites like Spotify. Snoop explained at the time that the streaming platforms don’t pay and the only people getting paid are the record labels and streaming platforms. Snoop told the “Drink Champs” hosts that soon enough there will be a Death Row application and music streamed in the metaverse.
“First thing I did was snatch all the music off those platforms traditionally known to people, because those platforms don’t pay,” Snoop stressed during the podcast. “Those platforms get millions of millions of streams, and nobody gets paid other than the record labels. So what I wanted to do is snatch my music off, create a platform similar to Amazon, Netflix, or Hulu. It’ll be a Death Row app, and the music will live in the metaverse in the meantime.”

Fog waves: photographer Nick Steinberg captures nature in motion
andscape and cityscape photographers have a love/hate relationship with the fog that inundates the San Francisco Bay area. It can make for some spectacular and moody photos, but it can also leave the area un-shootable – that is unless you seek higher ground. Nick Steinberg and other photographers in the Bay Area have formed a group that they call the "Fogaholics". source
