So, what I have learned from 1899 and Nightflyers before it is I have a very specific attraction to dark haired male leads haunted by the creepy apparitions of their dead children. I don’t know what this says about me but it’s probably not good.

Nightflyers S01.E02,05,07
Definitely not a police procedural and thank god for that! Joplin is in three episodes (allegedly) of this GRRM-sponsored sci-fi horror as Lommie's unnamed father.
Episode 2
I don't think things ended well for him :') but get a load of those tits!
Tumblr media
Oh dear, Lommie did this to her own dad, so I guess he must have been a wrong'un. There's a guy (Thale) on Lommie's spaceship who is a telepath and is seeing scenes of her torturing Joplin/smacking him with a mallet. And his vision seems to...manifest the bloodied mallet into reality?
Lommie has a port in her to communicate with the ship's computer and she's tried to take it out. She has another vision of dad, and he starts laughing at her despite being in a right state:

I think Solaris should probably have been compulsory viewing for this crew before heading off into space.
Oh look, there's King George from OFMD! *twiddles thumbs and waits for more bloody flashbacks*
Episode 5
Lommie has to go into some digital world to trap the untethered ghost of the ship's architect/'s mother in some firewall so she stops haunting the crew. She has to gain Cynthia's trust by meeting Cynthia's fear with her own...cue flashback!
Oh no, dad was actually helping her practise her computer melding skills! :( But 'the Elders are becoming suspicious'. Also that's a sweet little USian accent again :)

So it's an anti-tech cult who make up words ('descension'? Do you mean 'dissent'? Descent?)*
And, to Lommie: "Your gift is worth the pain." :( Uh oh.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The punishment is for her to smash him up with a hammer, hands first.
*ooh ok, the word is attested in the C15th! It does just mean descent, often with an astrological context, so I guess I'll allow it as weird cultic lingo for being disappointed in Joplin for playing with computers :')
Back inside the firewall house, dealing with Cynthia -
Cynthia: You had problems with your dad too! >:(
Lommie: uhhh not like that
Cynthia: I saw you hitting him with a hammer
Lommie: ah yes but that was because he loved me

Onwards, and no I will not be watching the intervening episode, just take a look at this summary:
'As the Nightflyer continues its voyage, Thale experiences a vision of several women. The Nightflyer encounters a stricken ErisCorp ship called the Eagle 16, which has been floating in deep space. Under orders from Roy to recover the ship's crystal in order to imprison his mother Cynthia's ghost, Karl, Melantha, Lommie, Auggie, and Rowan board the Eagle 16. They discover that the ship's female passengers, led by the scientist Connie, have established a self-sustainable society based on eating the flesh of clones created from the sperm of the male crew. Connie and her followers capture the crew of the Nightflyer, intending to recruit Melantha and Lommie and to harvest the male expedition members' sperm. Unable to establish contact with Karl’s team, Roy gets Thale to use his telepathic powers to probe the Eagle 16. The team escape...'
Sometimes....stories that are subverting the Alien Pregnancy/baby farm trope.....can actually be WORSE. But don't worry, they also get an alien pregnancy story into Episode 7. Also the fridgings begin in earnest.
I'm just here to keep my head down and pretend I'm not thinking about whumpy Andor fic when we get those nasty flashbacks.
Episode 7 (smh I am so bad at numbers I just watched most of episode 9 before checking which I was meant to be watching)
Thale is simulating fun games of Russian roulette for the crew.
I am now at the point where I'll be skipping scenes because the plot of this one is too squicky and the show just hasn't got me invested. I'm just on a Joplin hunt now...
Tumblr media
Aw, Lommie's hanging out with her family in the crystal/firewall, imagining everything fine :')
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dad jokes! She always orders the same thing but "we would have ordered for you, I just wasn't sure what you wanted..."
He's so proud of her :')
And then shit starts going wrong....
Her family's gone, then they come back murdered. I'll spare you the screencap of the slit throat, but it's when there's about 20mins left in the episode. Young Cynthia's still free and came to 'thank' Lommie for leaving her free.
And that’s all folks! As far as I can tell, questions about the nature of the cult remain unresolved - based on the moon and probably calling themselves Luddites (I don’t think they’re concerned about the loss of skilled labour jobs though), it’s not really clear whether Lommie’s parents had any choice in bringing up her and her sister there. Presumably not, if they cared about her skills but had to stick around anyway.
Also I think this show really needed to be more China Miéville and less GRRM, it's not got the imagination to make the themes of memory and language as interesting and subversive as it wants. I’ve seen space horror done better in so many different ways - this ended up being really derivative, despite the potential in the characters.
Rating
Dead? Probably? I think Lommie striking the death blow was just a vision, but even so it seems unlikely he’d be ok back with the cult if she got out. And the version in the diner is also dead unless Lommie ever reprograms it/him.
Evil? No, actually seems like he was a ride or die supportive dad! Of course, we don’t know if he joined the Luddites himself or grew up there, but in the end he sticks up for Lommie.
Affects the plot? No...
Hmm, so if your whump fic needs some visual reference, this exists. And I’m glad he was a good guy in the end and not a wrong’un as initially assumed. 2/5
