wip wednesday (on a friday)

next week is my last week of classes and i am free for the summer. ((: i have been working on a new project, the idea has been on my mind for months, but i held off on it because i knew i wanted to write and share it while i was on break. i have fallen so in love with this wip, and as much as i want to post the masterlist and get the first chapter out, i know i have to update my other wips first. but sharing a snippet is a good way to scratch the itch.

for now, i am keeping almost everything under wraps, including the title. i’m sure you can probably guess the trope, but i am putting what i hope will be a little bit of a unique twist on it. stay tuned for a lil reminder at the bottom.*

“I have to take care of him,” you say, quietly. Turning away from him, you gaze out the window of his truck, and your eyes fall on the swing hanging from the oak tree in the front yard. You think back to your lunchbox days, back to when your whole world was only one block wide, and you were too innocent to know any better. When you were too young to know that funny smell on your father’s breath was a mingle of lager and bourbon, far too little to understand that you wouldn’t find the shade of lipstick that stained his collar on your mother’s vanity. Before you started figuring out their picture perfect marriage was all smoke and mirrors, before you realized how forced their smiles were in every framed photograph perched atop the fireplace mantel. “I just have to, Joel. He’s my dad.”

He catches the way your voice breaks and it almost breaks him.

It’s a pain so palpable, he feels it.

And all he wants to do is take it away, carry it for you.

He hurts for the sweet soul he’s known her whole life, wonders how he didn’t see any of it until it was much too late.

“But sweetheart.” Without thinking, Joel reaches over the center console, and he places his hand over yours, prompting you to shift your attention back to him. His thumb rubs soft, soothing circles into your skin, over and over again as his eyes meet yours. “Who’s gonna take care of you?”

i’m sure most people have done this already, so i am tagging anyone who would like to do this. i know being a writer on here right now is difficult, but we do this for free, we do this for fun, and more importantly, we do this for us. 🤍
