Psalm 119:89 How to Develop a Passion for the Things of God Hang around passionate people. Luke 11:1  “Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.”  —-the disciples saw Jesus’s passion for prayer and they were drawn to have a similar passion. A Righteous King
1 For, behold, a righteous king shall reign, and princes shall govern with judgement.
2 And a man shall hide his words, and be hidden, as from rushing water, and shall appear in Sion as a rushing river, glorious in a thirsty land.
3 And they shall no more trust in men, but they shall incline their ears to hear.
4 And the heart of the weak ones shall attend to hear, and the stammering tongues shall soon learn to speak peace.
5 And they shall no more at all tell a fool to rule, and thy servants shall no more at all say, Be silent.
6 For the fool shall speak foolish words, and his heart shall meditate vanities, and to perform lawless deeds and to speak error against the Lord, to scatter hungry souls, and he will cause the thirsty souls to be empty.
7 For the counsel of the wicked will devise iniquity, to destroy the poor with unjust words, and ruin the cause of the poor in judgement.
8 But the godly have devised wise measures, and this counsel shall stand.
The Women of Jerusalem
9 Rise up, ye rich women, and hear my voice; ye confident daughters, hearken to my words.
10 Remember for a full year in pain, yet with hope: the vintage has been cut off; it has ceased, it shall by no means come again.
11 Be amazed, be pained, ye confident ones: strip you, bare yourselves, gird your loins;
12 and beat your breasts, because of the pleasant field, and the fruit of the vine.
13 As for the land of my people, the thorn and grass shall come upon it, and joy shall be removed from every house.
14 As for the rich city, the houses are deserted; they shall abandon the wealth of the city, and the pleasant houses: and the villages shall be caves for ever, the joy of wild asses, shepherds' pastures;
15 until the Spirit shall come upon you from on high, and Chermel shall be desert, and Chermel shall be counted for a forest.
16 Then judgement shall abide in the wilderness, and righteousness shall dwell in Carmel.
17 And the works of righteousness shall be peace; and righteousness shall ensure rest, and the righteous shall be confident for ever.
18 And his people shall inhabit a city of peace, and dwell in it in confidence, and they shall rest with wealth.
19 And if the hail should come down, it shall not come upon you; and they that dwell in the forests shall be in confidence, as those in the plain country.
20 Blessed are they that sow by every water, where the ox and ass tread. — Isaiah 32 | Brenton Septuagint Translation (BST) The English translation of The Septuagint by Sir Lancelot Charles Lee Brenton (1851) Cross References: 1 Samuel 25:25; 2 Samuel 14:14; Psalm 12:8; Psalm 72:1-2; Psalm 91:1; Psalm 104:11; Psalm 107:35; Psalm 119:95; Psalm 123:4; Psalm 141:4; Proverbs 1:23; Proverbs 11:25; Ecclesiastes 11:1; Isaiah 2:4; Isaiah 3:16; Isaiah 4:6; Isaiah 5:5-6; Isaiah 5:10; Isaiah 5:23; Isaiah 6:11; Isaiah 7:23; Isaiah 10:18-19; Isaiah 11:10; Isaiah 12:2; Isaiah 22:2; Isaiah 23:7; Isaiah 24:10; Isaiah 28:6; Isaiah 29:18; Isaiah 29:24; Isaiah 30:23-24; Isaiah 33:5; Isaiah 33:14; Isaiah 35:4-5; Nahum 2:7; Matthew 12:34; Romans 14:17; Hebrews 12:11; James 3:18

Psalms chapter 119
Nun
105 NUN. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
106 I have sworn, and I will perform it, that I will keep thy righteous judgments.
107 I am afflicted very much: quicken me, O LORD, according unto thy word.
108 Accept, I beseech thee, the freewill offerings of my mouth, O LORD, and teach me thy judgments.
109 My soul is continually in my hand: yet do I not forget thy law.
110 The wicked have laid a snare for me: yet I erred not from thy precepts.
111 Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage for ever: for they are the rejoicing of my heart.
112 I have inclined mine heart to perform thy statutes alway, even unto the end.

“Gratitude isn't only a celebration when good things happen: Gratitude's a declaration that GOD IS GOOD no matter what happens.”
“23 Verses About the Goodness of God” By Dr. David Jeremiah:
“God is good. But what does that mean—that God is good? The more I studied this word in the Bible, the more one central concept seemed to jump out: God’s goodness conveys His generosity. His goodness means far more than His generosity, but it certainly includes His infinitely generous attitude toward us. By nature, He longs to bring joy and blessing to all His creatures. The Bible repeatedly presents goodness as a core quality of our Lord, and I wanted to share just 23 of those occasions. These 23 verses point you to the goodness of our God and what it means for our lives.”
1. “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth.” —Exodus 34:6
2. “Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.” —1 Chronicles 16:34
3. “And they sang responsively, praising and giving thanks to the Lord: “For He is good, for His mercy endures forever toward Israel.” —Ezra 3:11
4. “Good and upright is the Lord.” —Psalm 25:8
5. “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” —Psalm 23:6
6. “The Lord is good to all, and His tender mercies are over all His works.” —Psalm 145:9
7. “No one is good but One, that is, God.” —Mark 10:18
8. “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.” —James 1:17
9. “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!” —Matthew 7:11
10. “I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.” —Psalm 27:13
11. “I will meditate on the glorious splendor of Your majesty, and on Your wondrous works. Men shall speak of the might of Your awesome acts, and I will declare Your greatness. They shall utter the memory of Your great goodness, and shall sing of Your righteousness.” —Psalm 145:5-7
12. “He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.” —Psalm 33:5
13. “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who trusts in Him!” —Psalm 34:8
14. “Be thankful to Him, and bless His name. For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting.” —Psalm 100:4-5
15. “Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men! For He satisfies the longing soul, and fills the hungry soul with goodness.” —Psalm 107:8-9
16. “As a father pities his children, so the Lord pities those who fear Him. For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust.” —Psalm 103:13-14
17. “Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God; Your Spirit is good. Lead me in the land of uprightness.” —Psalm 143:10
18. “The Lord is upright; He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.” —Psalm 92:15
19. “You are good, and do good; teach me Your statutes.” —Psalm 119:68
20. “You also gave Your good Spirit to instruct them, and did not withhold Your manna from their mouth, and gave them water for their thirst.” —Nehemiah 9:20
21. “Hear me, O Lord, for Your lovingkindness is good; turn to me according to the multitude of Your tender mercies.” —Psalm 69:16
22. “The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and He knows those who trust in Him.” —Nahum 1:7
23. “Oh, how great is Your goodness, which You have laid up for those who fear You, which You have prepared for those who trust in You in the presence of the sons of men! You shall hide them in the secret place of Your presence from the plots of man; You shall keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues.” —Psalm 31:19-20

My favorite Psalm is definitely 119, but my absolute 2nd favorite is 107. I can’t read it without smiling - and many times tearing up… my favorite verse is the one about how they were “at their wit’s end” and He came and delivered them from their distress. How many times I have been at my wit’s end and there He was - just at the point where I could not take anymore and, just like that, He helped me. Once I begged for a break - just a small break from the torment - and I ended up in Hawaii. For a year. For free. He knows when you cannot take anymore and He is listening… collecting your tears… if you are at your wit’s end ~ He knows ~ and He will help you. Cry out to Him.
“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story— those he redeemed from the hand of the foe, those he gathered from the lands, from east and west, from north and south. Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no way to a city where they could settle. They were hungry and thirsty, and their lives ebbed away. Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He led them by a straight way to a city where they could settle. Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind, for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things. Some sat in darkness, in utter darkness, prisoners suffering in iron chains, because they rebelled against God’s commands and despised the plans of the Most High. So he subjected them to bitter labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help. Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He brought them out of darkness, the utter darkness, and broke away their chains. Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind, for he breaks down gates of bronze and cuts through bars of iron. Some became fools through their rebellious ways and suffered affliction because of their iniquities. They loathed all food and drew near the gates of death. Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He sent out his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave. Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind. Let them sacrifice thank offerings and tell of his works with songs of joy. Some went out on the sea in ships; they were merchants on the mighty waters. They saw the works of the Lord, his wonderful deeds in the deep. For he spoke and stirred up a tempest that lifted high the waves. They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths; in their peril their courage melted away. They reeled and staggered like drunkards; they were at their wits’ end. Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven. Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind. Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the council of the elders. He turned rivers into a desert, flowing springs into thirsty ground, and fruitful land into a salt waste, because of the wickedness of those who lived there. He turned the desert into pools of water and the parched ground into flowing springs; there he brought the hungry to live, and they founded a city where they could settle. They sowed fields and planted vineyards that yielded a fruitful harvest; he blessed them, and their numbers greatly increased, and he did not let their herds diminish. Then their numbers decreased, and they were humbled by oppression, calamity and sorrow; he who pours contempt on nobles made them wander in a trackless waste. But he lifted the needy out of their affliction and increased their families like flocks. The upright see and rejoice, but all the wicked shut their mouths. Let the one who is wise heed these things and ponder the loving deeds of the Lord.” Psalms‬ ‭107‬:‭1‬-‭43‬

20 Reasons You Must Give Thanks To God by  EVANGELIST JOSHUA OREKHIE
Giving thanks is not what many people do often because when they look at their lives, they believe there is nothing worth thanking God for. They convince themselves that thanking God might be right for those He has showered His blessings on, but not right for them.
They would claim that God knew He was yet to do anything for them, so thanking Him would embarrass Him!  This is not correct.  There is no one who does not have a reason to thank God. When we can’t think, we can’t give thanks. A thoughtful person will be a thankful person. Someone complaining that he has no shoes will thank God when he sees another person without a leg!
Often times, we are ungrateful for God’s kindnesses and manifold blessings in our lives. We are so concerned about what is yet to happen that we fail to see what has happened. We remember, so constantly, answers to prayers that are yet to manifest and we forget answers to prayers we’re already enjoying. How ungrateful we are! We regularly violate God’s instruction concerning giving thanks.
Psalm 136                              For GOD mercy endures forever
Colossians 3:17                    For everything in word or deed

CAN YOU COME UP WITH AT LEAST 20 REASON                                            TO GIVE THANKS TO GOD???
DID YOU KNOW THERE ARE MORE THAN 20 REASON NOT IN A LIFETIME BUT IN A DAY TO GIVE THANKS TO GOD.
Psalm 107:1-43  (READ IN THE ENTIRETY)                                                          O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.

DAILY DEVOTIONAL FOR SEPTEMBER 20, 2023
The Light of Life
By Enid Adah Nyinomujuni (Dar es Salaam, Tanzania)
READ PSALM 119:105-112
"Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered."
JOEL 2:32 (KJV)
"The psalmist said God’s word was a lamp to his feet and a light to his path. Recently, I had an experience where God’s word enlightened my path. I had been hurt deeply by someone’s unkind words to me. For a number of days, all I could think of were those unkind words. I lost my joy because of that situation, and worse still I could not pray. I felt like avoiding that person because I knew seeing her would bring up the pain again, yet I knew that was not the right thing to do.
I wanted to move forward, but I could not seem to find the way. Then one day I read Joel 2:32, which says that all who call upon the name of the Lord shall be delivered. That scripture became a lamp and a light for me. I saw I needed to call upon the Lord to help me out of my darkness, and I did. The Lord answered, and now I am in good fellowship with the person who hurt me. My joy has returned.
We all find ourselves in situations where we don’t know the right thing to do or how to do it. When we learn to apply the lamp and light of God’s word, we can find the way." Let God enlighten you on how to solve dilemmas in your life. When you have strife with someone or disagree, just call upon the Lord. You will work through it with Him.
TODAY'S PRAYER
"Dear Lord, we want your word to be a lamp and a light in our lives today. In Jesus’ name." Amen.
Psalm 119:105-112
"105 Your word is a lamp before my feet and a light for my journey. 106 I have sworn, and I fully mean it: I will keep your righteous rules. 107 I have been suffering so much LORD, make me live again according to your promise. 108 Please, LORD, accept my spontaneous gifts of praise. Teach me your rules! 109 Though my life is constantly in danger, I won’t forget your Instruction. 110 Though the wicked have set a trap for me, I won’t stray from your precepts. 111 Your laws are my possession forever because they are my heart’s joy. 112 I have decided to keep your statutes forever, every last one." I read your word and I place my faith in it. I praise you for being there at all times. Bless you today! Joe

Wees een man. Preek 462, 27 juli 1862

The attributes of God:
The Goodness of God Part 1/2
Recently I have been reading The Knowledge of the Holy by A. W. Tozer. In this book Tozer defines what it is meant by the expression an ‘attribute of God.’ So we are starting this bible study by trying to define what is meant by an attribute of God.
A Divine attribute can be expressed in simple terms as ‘something that is true about God.’ Or we could say whatever may be correctly ascribed to God.
The attributes of God include the self-existence of God, the eternity of God, God’s infinitude, God’s immutability, God’s omniscience, God’s omnipotence, God’s faithfulness, God’s goodness, the love of God, and the grace of God etc.
For the purposes of our bible study today ‘an attribute of God is whatever God has in any way revealed as being true of Himself.’ We can only know of God what He has chosen to reveal to us and that we are somehow been made capable of knowing. We can find out what God is like from the three main ways that he communicates His Divine attributes to us:
1. Through the natural world i.e. the Creation.
2. Through the Holy Scriptures.
3. Through the person of His Son Jesus Christ.
The reason that Bible teachers and scholars have chosen the word ‘attributes’ concerning God is to try to avoid the use of mere human descriptions that can only express themselves in human terms. But God can only be described in His own terms if we are to avoid error.
The attribute of: The Goodness of God
Psalm 34:8 O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.
In everyday language the words ‘good or ‘goodness’ mean many different things to different people. For this bible study our approach to defining God’s goodness is that which disposes Him to be kind, cordial, benevolent, and full of good will toward men.
Psalm 107:1 O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.
He is tender-hearted and of quick sympathy, and His unfailing attitude toward all moral beings is open, frank, and friendly.
By His nature He is inclined to bestow blessedness and He takes holy pleasure in the happiness of His people.
Psalm 119:68 Thou art good, and doest good; teach me thy statutes.
That God is good is taught or implied on every page of the Bible and must be received as an undisputed article of faith.
We could say that the Goodness of God ought to colour all our thoughts of Him and help to keep us thinking straight.
If God is not good, then there can be no distinction between kindness and cruelty, and heaven can be hell and hell, heaven.
The goodness of God is the purpose behind all the God’s blessings He pours out each day on His people.
God created us because He felt good in His heart, and He redeemed us for the same reason.
We need to understand that the unmerited, spontaneous goodness of God underpins all His acts of love[1].
Psalm 145:9: The Lord is good to all, and His tender mercies are over all His works.
Since God is immutable (unchanging) He never varies in the intensity of His loving-kindness. He has never been kinder than He now is, nor will He ever be less kind. He is no respecter of persons but makes His sun to shine on the evil as well as on the good and sends His rain on the just and on the unjust.
The cause of His goodness is in Himself, the recipients of His goodness are all His beneficiaries without merit and without recompense. Always God’s goodness is the ground of our expectation. Our faith in God is faith in the Goodness of God.
When believers are thinking straight, we will realise that we dwell under a friendly sky and that the God of heaven, though exalted in power and majesty is eager to be friends with us.
When any person approaches God with a petition for forgiveness, healing, or help etc., what is God like and what can we expect when we approach him?
John 14:9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?
When Jesus Christ walked on earth, he showed people exactly what God the Father was like and revealed the true and loving nature of God in all his dealings with humankind. The hypocrites and the insincere will find Him cold and aloof, but the repentant will find him merciful and the self-condemned will find Him to be generous and kind. To the frightened He is friendly to the poor in spirit He is forgiving, to the ignorant, considerate; to the weak, gentle; to the stranger, hospitable.
By our own attitudes we may determine our reception by Him.
Though the kindness of God is an infinite, overflowing fountain of cordiality, God will not force His attention upon us.
If we would be welcomed as the Prodigal was, we must come as the Prodigal came; and when we so come, even though the Pharisees and the legalists sulk without, there will be a feast of welcome within, and music and dancing as the Father takes His child again to His heart.
The greatness of God awakes fear within us, but His goodness encourages us not to be afraid of Him.
Psalm 84:11 For the Lord God is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.
This is a staggering promise in God’s word, that if we walk uprightly before God then He will allow us to have every good thing as He defines them.
Amen
Personal Prayer
[1] Julian of Norwich in Revelations of Divine Love.
In Part 2 we consider the practical implications of the goodness of God by comparing the responses of the Rich Young Ruler and Zacchaeus and how we might apply these lessons in our own lives.
