Here are two images that I colorized and did some 3D work on. Of course you wont be able to see the 3D part without the red and blue glasses. Either way, they make for pretty pictures. I took both of these pictures on our Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). I forget what part of the fly the first image is, but the second one is a flies mouth close up. Gross isnt it?

A moment of science...

There’s an image that I keep seeing pop up on some far-right/anti science accounts (mostly twitter) and I want to just give you all a quick primer, because it’s UTTER NONSENSE.

Here’s the image:

It’s being used to illustrate that masks are ineffective by showing a fancy, science-y image (a scanning electron micrograph, the ones people love to pseudocolor) by suggesting:

1. The fibers shown are from a mask (they are not)

2. The weave is very open (absolutely not the case in a good or even mediocre surgical mask)

3. That wee spot is a virus (I don’t care how big and red that arrow is, that is NOT a virus).

This image is helpfully labeled with the magnification (25x, which makes sense if that’s a standard thread size), the power level the microscope is running at (20kV, at this high power it allows the viewer to have a huge depth of field -in focus for a large distance- but up close would melt anything biological), and a scale bar (the horizontal line) which is 2 millimeters, or 2 x 10-3 meters.  These labels appear to be legit and from an older model of SEM.

The coronavirus is a fairly large virus at 120 nanometers, or 1.2 x 10-7 meters.  That’s... a big difference.  

And according to my 3 minutes of giving a damn, the image appears to have first emerged on a Russian LiveJournal site (about 4 days before right wing sites in the USA started spreading it).  You can make the connections.  

Beware the misinformation, and think critically.

Intro

One of the most fundamental features of scientific visualization is the process of mapping scalar values to colors. This mapping allows us to pseudocolor an image or object based on varying numerical data. Obviously, the choice of color map is important to allow the viewer to easily perform the reverse mapping back to scalar values[2].

Research has shown that the rainbow color map is rarely the optimal choice when displaying data with a pseudocolor map. The rainbow color map confuses viewers through its lack of perceptual ordering, obscures data through its uncontrolled luminance variation, and actively misleads interpretation through the introduction of non-data-dependent gradients [3]

However, it was found that in IEEE Visualization papers from 2001 to 2005 the rainbow color map is used 51 percent of the time, and was used in 8 out of 9 toolkits examined by [3].
