New Psychological Research Teaches Us How To Create Healthy Internet Boundaries
Tumblr media
I write about the world of psychology.
Over sixty percent of the world’s population regularly uses the internet to create, share, and consume media and knowledge. It is transforming our lives in ways we are just beginning to understand.
With a large number of us now spending so much time online, researchers in the field of psychology have turned their focus to understanding what our internet behavior says about our true nature.
Here are four science-backed findings about how to use the internet for self-betterment, not self-detriment.
If you are feeling blue, don’t look at your social media.
Social media offers a quick fix for our psychological and social needs. But what happens when the likes and comments don’t come?
In a study led by psychologist Maria Carmen Herrera of the University of Granada and published in the Journal of Psychology, social media has a lasting effect on identity formation in adolescents.
The study found that adolescents (not surprisingly) place great importance on social comparison and social reinforcement-seeking and that negative emotions resulting from a lack of online validation can have consequences that stay with adolescents well into adulthood.
"Intensive use of social media sites has been associated with increased body image concerns, self-objectification, social comparison, envy, and the likelihood of suffering from and engaging in cyberbullying," says Herrera.
So, if you’ve been feeling low lately, it might be worth taking a step back and examining your relationship with social media. Read More about New Psychological Research on aofirs.org

A New Perspective on the Prodromal Training Phase (PTP)Beyond Aviation| Stephy Publishers
Tumblr media
Psychological Science and Research| Stephy publishers
Abstract :
Prodromal Training Phase (PTP) is the early identification, of the special characteristics that each trainee pilot has, beyond what is on their CV. It is important to do this before or at the beginning of the trainingbecause these characteristics will determine how efficientthe process of learning will be. That is why this article describes PTP since it could also be used in other fields of training beyond aviation which was the domain for which it was initially developed. To make sure that trainees do not just learn theories but to be able to think out of the box and figure out what is wrong and fix it. Keywords: PTP, Crew Training, Stress, Motivation, Memory Perspective : The need to give the proper emphasis on the affective domain in pilot’s training was explained in the ‘instructor skills beyond telling’1 presentation at the Royal Aeronautical Society annual ‘International Flight Crew Training Conference’, in September 2019. In combination with the cognitive domain which is the straightforward acquisition of knowledge, the affective domain is essential since the trainee’s emotions and interests act as a motivation to learn. In order to provide effective training in both domains, attention has to be paid to the identification of the main issues that need special attention, in the period at the beginning of the training. Thus, the psychologically-based aviation training approach PTP2 has been developed. Prodrome is derived from the Greek word prodromos, meaning “running before”.3 Early signs or symptoms often indicate the onset of a disease before more diagnostically specific signs and symptoms develop. Participate in ASMR Research!
https://york.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_2ipWgUC7Z37AKXP
Got a spare 15-20 minutes? I am doing some research for my dissertation into ASMR and I would be so grateful if any ASMR lovers could take part.
It is a study investigating how gender and personality influences the intensity of ASMR experiences. If you are over the age of 18 and consistently experience ASMR sensations, you are eligible to take part!
You will be asked to complete an online questionnaire, which should take no more than 15-20 minutes. This will involve rating some statements about yourself, for example ‘People have often told me that I have a good imagination’, as well as rating the intensity at which you experience 10 common ASMR-inducing stimuli, including whispering. Finally, you will be asked to rate how happy engaging in ASMR media makes you feel.
If you would be kind enough to take part, please follow the link. If you have any queries, please contact Dr Jane Clarbour at [email protected].

Primary Mental Health Care Part 2: Three European Primary Mental Health Care Examples as Basis for Change to the Irish System
Abstract
The successes and limitations of primary mental health care systems in three countries outside of Ireland are examined in order to inform potential change for the Irish primary mental health care system. Systems currently at work within Scotland, England, and the Netherlands are outlined, all of which employ versions of the “stepped-care” approach to primary care. It is acknowledged that Ireland is attempting to modify primary care to include the stepped-care approach. However, there are significant limitations to the current Irish system. With the Scottish, English, and Dutch systems in mind, an alternative vision of primary mental health care for Ireland is suggested.
Keywords:
Mental health, Health care, Irish system
Initiatives in primary mental health care
Introduction The current Irish primary mental health care (PMHC) service in Ireland has been examined in the first article in this series. The model, known as ‘Counseling in Primary Care’ (CIPC) was introduced by the Health Service Executive (HSE) in 2013 and was first evaluated in 2018.1 Shortcomings of this model include: eligibility criteria; service limitations and lengths of waiting lists; and medicalization of the whole system. Currently, in order to access CIPC services, a candidate must be aged over 18 and have a medical card. The CIPC model is a short-term service with a limit of 8 counseling sessions, and access is only available through GP referral. The most recent report on the National Evaluation Study revealed 76-80% of service users waiting 0-4 months and 20-24% waiting between 4-6 months.

Contextualized Problem Solving in Primary School Students| Stephy Publishers

Stephy Publishers
Abstract The objective of the present study was to explore and describe the influence of a proposal that returns to Problem Based Learning for the application arithmetic principles in the solution of problems in sixth grade students of primary education. Eighty-six of sixth grade students participated with an average age of 11.0 years. The intervention strategy was carried out in nine sessions lasting approximately one hour each. The results in general, do not show statistically significant differences in the performance of the execution in the resolution of problems between pre-test and post-test conditions, however, it was observed through the students' report that they had experienced knowledge acquisition based on the content of the intervention. Keywords: Problem solving, Problem based learning, Arithmetic, Primary school Introduction Mathematical knowledge is a skill that is present from a very early age,1-3 develops according to chronological age and with school learning Berch4 defines mathematical knowledge as a set of skills such as awareness, intuition, recognitions, knowledge, experience, ability, desire, sensation, explanation, processing, conceptual structure and mental schemes of the number and its applications. Within the educational context the pedagogical implications are on the development of mathematical skills are much more complex than intuition to quantitative elements;4,5 In other words, it must be a way of thinking that involves and connects all aspects of mathematics teaching and learning, putting into practice different constructivist strategies that involve paradigms related to the theoretical conception and the empirical findings reported so far4 giving meaning and functionality to the knowledge that students will learn, an example of this is the resolution of contextualized arithmetic problems. The Role of Hearts & Minds in Organisational Change| Stephy Publishers
Tumblr media
Journal of Psychological Science and Research
- (JPsSR)|
Stephy Publishers
Abstract
The aims of this paper are as follows:
1. To put Hearts & Minds on the map as a key approach to organisational change.
2. To explain the underlying mechanism of Hearts & Minds.
3. To show that Hearts & Minds can be equally successfully deployed for organisational change in the commercial sector.
4. To explain how Hearts & Minds achieves a higher level of permanence compared with other approaches.
The paper traces the military origins of Hearts & Minds from the Malayan Emergency and the Borneo Campaign through to the final version in
Operation Storm. The method centres around working within the values of the target audience, focusing on the needs of that audience and mimicking
the military model. The results from the commercial adaptation are equally reliable as in the military model and permanence of the transformation
is equally present.
The key reasons why Hearts & Minds is effective and reliable is as follows:
• In an inverted way, fixes problems that are important to the target audience, neither the Administrators nor C-suite
• Addresses Needs & Wants of the target audience
• Allows the target audience to participate
• The target audience are given the skills by a Training Team who chaperone them throughout the task
• The Training Team always work within the values of the target audience
• Achieves a high level of permanence
• Dignity is maintained at all times
Keywords: Training Team, Needs & Wants, Permanence, Values, Communication, Awareness
Introduction Hearts & Minds was conceived by Sir Gerald Templer, the British High Commissioner for Malaya, during the Malayan Emergency. The exact moment at which he first used the phrase ‘winning the hearts and minds of the people’ does not seem to be officially recorded, but it was very soon after his arrival. It was a telling phrase and caught on rapidly”.1 The Malayan Emergency lasted from 1948-1960. “The shooting side of the business is only 25% of the trouble and the other 75% lies in getting the people of this country behind us”, wrote Templer in November 1952. Introduction
Hearts & Minds was conceived by Sir Gerald Templer, the British High Commissioner for Malaya, during the Malayan Emergency.
This required the notion of understanding people’s needs and desires and linking those desires to a sensible civil development programme. It meant delivering it without qualification, yet undertaking all of this within the culture of the people, rather than the culture of the change agents. Gathering intelligence constantly and communicating free of propaganda always took place within the context of the civil developments in progress. Issues were dealt with as they arose. The outcome was success.
