Thoughts On Ayato’s Story Quest

Spoiler Warning: Discussion on Ayato’s Story Quest, Sayu’s Hangout, and a hidden Inazuma Fortune Slip quest 

Personally, I feel that Ayato’s current story quest had a lot potential, but it was delivered in the completely wrong format. Condensing all of the plot left the pacing rife with issues for a fanbase that regularly complains about a lack of a skip button/too much dialogue.

I love, love, love political/court dramas, but these stories are so much better suited to being told over time instead of condensed into one short, 1-hour character story quest. 

Instead, this sort of plot would have been so much better suited as a time gated world/hidden quest instead of as a 1-hour quest meant to sell a highly anticipated character to an audience. 

Having the player wait over the span of a few days would help with immersion so much more, too, instead of just the usual "go to point A then point B then point A" in one sitting. It would also give Hoyoverse time to introduce Matsuura as a character/show him collecting power over time. Just imagine how cool it would have been to see more of the Tenryou Commission’s soldiers gradually appearing in Ritou/NPCs dialogue becoming more fretful over the span of one week.

Time gating the quests would also force the player to break up the dialogue across the span of multiple days. Story quests force the player to read all of the text in one sitting - if the player doesn’t, they are “punished” since they are locked out of co-op and other quests. Case in point - look at the hidden Fortune Slip quest. It arguably has a similar amount of dialogue, but is one of the most beloved quests. I feel this is largely due in part to being split upon between multiple days.

Ayato's story quest also just feels like such a missed opportunity to expand on the Fatui assassination plot. It would have absolutely made sense what with Gendou Ringo's quest, Sayu's hangout that had the Fatui blackmailing a Yashiro commission officer into putting a hit on the traveler, and Ayato's own trailer. 

This also would have been easier to pace in a story quest - a large part of the Fatui in Inazuma have been dealt with already, either by the traveler (Fortune slip quest, Tatara tales, Kokomi’s story quest) or by the Shogun herself (Signora). Most left over are loose ends or those that have been undercover in Inazuman society (see Fortune Slip quest).

Hoyoverse could have easily started the quest with the traveler stumbling upon the Fatui ambushing some "unknown man" close to the Kamisato estate (there are so many Fatui mobs around it) and gone on to help him clean house internally after discovering his real identity. It would also have set us up nicely for a domain and longer cut-scene on par with Yae's/Raiden's that many players really wanted to have/have expressed disappointment with the lack of in Ayato’s. (Yes, the Thoma scene was cute, but it was not on par with the cinematic scenes in the past. It would have been nice as an additional scene to a cinematic one).

This could have also shown more of Ayato's distrust towards most people/expanded on his background of being betrayed by those his family had trusted, laid groundwork for Ayato to start to consider the Traveler for his sphere of trusted individuals, (by no means be bffs with them by the end, but a step closer to *starting* to trust them), expanded on the Shuumatsuban, and helped with tying up the loose ends with the Fatui in Inazuma. 

Completing this version of his story quest could have also served to unlock his current story quest as a world/hidden quest. It would have been the perfect segway too; Ayato has worked with the traveler in the past and be more comfortable with using them as the go between Chisato & Kamaji.

Maybe it's also because Raiden's part II and Ayato's story quest came out back to back, but it felt like Hoyoverse is more concerned with selling Kujou Kamaji to the player rather than one of the most anticipated characters. He's had so much more growth than most other playable characters. IDK I’m a lil salty 😂

Also it just felt weird to me that Ayato told Chisato/the traveler his full life story/feelings about becoming the head of the clan at an early age. That dialogue feels more along the lines of something that would happen in a Friendship level 10 conversation, rather than with a rival clan's head :x

Kogasa Tatara was enjoying herself with the tea she made for herself, that is until she see Yoshika coming back from the temple while covered in blood which at first she thought she killed a tresspasser, when really she was fighting and beating down her mistress.

" Hi sensei! Did ya kill anyone back in the cemetery? I bet it's one of those moon rabbit mutants! "

" We're leaving.... "

" Eh? Leaving what do you mean? Is it another contract? "

Kogasa even as an adult she's still naive as ever, she places her hand onto the umbrella woman's shoulder telling her the truth about why they're leaving the myouren temple and the cemetery for good.

" No, leave forever, for good, leave the white rabbits... "

Upon hearing this shocks Kogasa to the core about leaving the white rabbit clan from the myouren cemetery for good. Of course she's hesitant at first and wanted to know why.

" WHAT?! LEAVE THE CLAN?!

B-but why? What happened? What about Ringo? Seiran? Star? "

" They'll follow... please come and don't leave me..alone... "

Kogasa despite the hesitation she refuse to leave Yoshika behind, she and the umbrella yokai are close, very close together as she climbs onto the jiangshi' back now yoshika holding onto her legs she walked away all the while carrying her friend on her back in the road, Kogasa does have one question for her.

" Where do we go now, sensei...? "

Yoshika chuckles and smiles at the umbrella yokai on her back, staring at the now bright sky as the sun shines above gensokyo's own landscape.

" Where the roads take us.... "

And so Yoshika's departure of the myouren cemetery, the white rabbit clan, and far from Seiga Kaku and toaism as a whole had give birth to a new chapter where both the her and Kogasa will continues on with their own journey finding a place better else where and turn over a new leaf, the birth of a legend the white tiger, is born.
