back in your ask box!!! i watched your final thoughts for yakuza 1 video (well done on being able to stand some of the glitches like god) and i was wondering if you had any more that you forgot to say or didn’t think of in the moment? i just really love hearing people’s final thoughts on game or other piece of media

That video ended up getting WAY sappier than I expected in the end but I seriously should've seen it coming TBH. I'm a sappy person at heart and anyway let's not get too sidetracked.

So I will say I definitely forgot to mention the camera. Having no control over the camera does mess with me quite a bit. Because Kiryu will turn around and you'll notice in the videos I uploaded of fights-he sometimes just stops hitting enemies. They're gone. Lots of times enemies would get stuck behind wall and other objects. I was also constantly checking the map in the menu itself, because I kept getting directions mixed up.

Not a game breaker, does make for some intense awkwardness. (Some of it's my own fault, I am hardly the gaming champion around here ahaha)

Combat got repetitive. My own fault because as I said in the video, I didn't finish Komaki's training thanks to the input issue. I had other skills I developed too, but I wasn't ever remembering to pull it off. So I didn't vary it to the degree I could've.

At the ending, I was going to finish the hostesses but I messed myself up there because you have Haruka permanently in the endgame. And her bond with Kiryu decreases if he goes to those places (it dropped when I bought weapons at Beam) and I feel bad making her sad so that was my own issue.

There is one place where the original game is better than Kiwami that is..going to probably be a 'hot take' but-not having Majima ambush you every twenty seconds makes for a less stressful game experience overall. You can get from point A to point B with only the standard street goons (which are VERY persistent you can barely get around the block without at least two ambushes: and they have bigger enemies that are in larger groups) but those fights are fairly quick, and pay well!

Majima, meanwhile, can seriously drag out. It's not as bad in the beginning but you'll come up to the end of Kiwami like "please..just one break..I do not have any more healing items."

For RGG'S first game out of the gate, it's good. I enjoyed it more than I expected too. It's all the same elements I love with Yakuza (as I had sapped about in the video) and the characters are recognizable, even in this rougher around the edges stage.

The dub itself is a strange point. As I said, again in the video, I've done some digging on it. The localization is considered decent, (apparently 'hit some balls' is translated as accurately as it could be) but that excessive swearing really shoves it into the 'trying to hard B movie' stuff. HOWEVER.

It has a GOOD cast and there's times where it's done really well. I don't have the kind of professional experience to claim someone is 'phoning in a performance'. I can't make that call. Not all line deliveries are very good, and there's some odd changes between how characters talk from beginning to end. There was one point near the end where Kiryu delivered a couple lines and sounded like a completely different person?? It was odd.

Directing is where it really shows. I feel like with the voices behind it, and the localization team, had it been given better directing, it would've been a bit I guess. stronger? I feel it's important to keep in mind too with it being the first game (and RGG wasn't some triple A studio back in the day either) they did pretty good.

The games good! It's fun, it's recognizable. and I honestly think that if I had gone into Yakuza with this as my first game, I'd still be here. I got into Yakuza via Yakuza 0 and have since gone through the entire series. It's very important and special to me and I genuinely enjoyed Yakuza 1 more than I expected.

I didn't anticipate hating it, of course. But I was still a little surprised regardless since it is so infamous in the fandom. My only regret is that unless you own a PS2 or a really good emulator, so many people can't play it. Which is a shame overall. That's not unique to this and Kiwami, the remake is out there and known. But still. Sometimes I get a little sad about how hard game preservation has gotten.

AFDHFFHJD so… answering this nearly a full year later. I had this like 90% done in my drafts for ages and forgot to actually post it. I only remembered because I was scrolling through my inbox for any fun prompts I might do and saw the ask.

Anyway, ambiguously set at some point during R&R after the gang escape the white cathedral and meet up with Nikolai again. Let’s pretend Nikolina got separated from the rest somehow lmao

Alina didn’t mind sharing a room— it was more cost efficient, and likely safer if they had to leave in a hurry. Sharing a bed was a little more uncomfortable though.

“I think the innkeeper may have misunderstood,” Nikolai said slowly.

“It’s fine,” she grumbled, too exhausted to care very much. She sank heavily onto the one bed, unraveling the shawl around her neck that hid the collar. “It’s only one night.”

“I could try to get another room?”

She shook her head. That would just draw more attention to them, the last thing they needed was to be memorable.

They had been mostly camping out in the woods at night, trying to steer clear of populated areas as best they could. They wouldn’t have been staying at the inn at all if Sturmhond didn’t have contacts they were intending to meet in the morning. Contacts that might even help lead them to the rest of the group. Alina hoped they were safe.

Nikolai sat down beside her. “I’ll have you know, I snore horribly.”

“Wonderful.”

He gave the bed an exaggerated pat. “It doesn’t seem like a very good bed, to be honest. I don’t think it even has fleas. I could just take the floor.”

She snorted. “Don’t be ridiculous. It’s no use if you’re stiff as a board in the morning. What if you have to run away because you bad mouthed someone?”

“That would be unfortunate.”

“You just stay on your side, and I’ll stay on mine.” And truthfully she was too exhausted to care much about propriety at the moment. And sleeping on an actual bed was a very enticing prospect. She suspected Nikolai was probably feeling the same way.

“I can’t wait to tell Oretsev you insisted on sharing a bed.”

She turned to glare at him. “I could still change my mind. No gloating.”

He held up his hands placatingly, but his grin didn’t slip. “Fine, fine. I’ll leave that part out of the tales of our daring exploits.”

“I just hope we’ll get a chance to recount tales at all,” she replied.

And that was that for the moment. They busied themselves the rest of the evening taking the opportunity to replenish their supplies, and prepare for the travel yet ahead of them. It was a careful thing, they both had recognizable faces. And the last thing they wanted was to be caught before the rendezvous in the morning.

Alina took her turn washing while Nikolai ventured out again to get food.

She’d quickly dressed again and was brushing out her wet hair when she heard it, smooth as silk, almost a whisper. “Where are you, Alina?”

Somehow, she didn’t jump. Though she felt the Darkling’s cool gaze on her. Though her stomach twisted with sudden dread. “I think telling you defeats the point of being in hiding.”

“Why run, Alina? You know I’ll find you eventually. The longer you take the less inclined I am to show you mercy.”

“I’ve seen what you call mercy. I don’t want it,” she bit out, just as the door opened.

“Suit yourself,” he replied, calmly, and with that the apparition dispersed.

Nikolai walked in some time later, carrying a tray of food from the kitchen downstairs. Slim pickings, but that had been the case for awhile now, with the drawn out civil war. And frankly she didn’t have much of an appetite after the Darkling’s brief visit. But she forced herself to choke down what she could.

To his credit, Nikolai seemed to sense that her mood had turned since earlier, if not the reason why, and so he didn’t make many attempts at conversation. She was grateful for it.

Then there was the business of sleeping. It was less awkward than she was expecting. She told herself she was too exhausted and in her own head to care very much.

So she extinguished the lamp, and lay down on her own side of the bed, carefully turned away while Nikolai changed. It was likely testament to his own weariness that he hadn’t made any quips or half hearted attempts to flirt with her.

She listened to the rustle of clothes and then the soft footfalls as he approached. The listing of the mattress. Despite everything she was very aware of how close he was, even when carefully keeping to his own side. The already cramped room just seemed smaller in the dark.

“This is preferable to sleeping on the floor,” he admitted, finally.

“Much easier on your delicate, princely sensibilities, right?” she replied without turning around. She was almost a little afraid to.

He only laughed.

Still, it didn’t take very long for Alina to fall asleep.

She woke some time before dawn, disoriented. Not quite sure where she was or how, except that it was more comfortable than she was used to.

Her memory caught up to her about a minute later. And the realization that she was very much not on her own side of the bed. Just who she was clinging to, and whose shoulder she’d buried her face in. From the steady rise and fall of his breath, Nikolai appeared to still be asleep. Fortunate, he’d never let her live this down.

Gingerly, she tried to disentangle herself without disturbing him. With any luck, they simply wouldn’t talk about this in the morning.

Because I love making my black beans existential crises worse, I’m curious how Saturn would react to Blacky starting to doubt if he himself was really a good person due to Starholder tf moon asking him how he’s so confident that he wasn’t just as bad as them when he was ruling. He knows that Starholder tf moon isn’t a very reliable person, but he’s right that blacky doesn’t know what he used to be like. What if he’s right? Referring to this post :)

Lord Saturn after making a mental note to take a visit at Blacky's original universe would just answer his question with another question. "How do you know you were actually bad?" Pointing out the big loophole of what SHTF!Moon is trying to use against Blacky. If he doesn't know if he was good then how would he know if he was bad? Of course Blacky would try and argue that Moon would know cause he was there. Saturn would shoot this down immediately and remind Blacky he just admitted that he is a bad person. His word is unreliable and cannot be trusted. (Side note I'm just imaging this conversation taking place with Saturn recharging on his bed with Blacky sitting in his lap rambling about his day and Lord Saturn giving him comfort pets the whole time)

What would you describe the differences in your mind of art drawn on paper to art drawn digitally. To be more specific the difference in art in comics from the silver age to now like the shading and such

This is a juicy one! I've been stewing this one over for a while

Basically it all boils down to something very basic: the medium they are displayed on and the technology of each era.

Besides the aesthetics, which are each always a product of their era, the tools used for making comics professionally back then are different from the ones we used. Surely there are tons of artists who still ink with pen and brush but most comic artists nowadays work digital. And the printing methods are also different: back then you needed to use screentones and color separated printing plates to print color, but now most people draw exclussively for digital releases too. Artists back then had to work around lots of limitations to be able to produce comics that looked good and were cheap to print. And comics worked like this until around the 80s or 90s

Now we have lots of tools to render art in very different styles and digital printing to print it (I do have mixed feelings about digital printing because it can be cheap if you're doing a small batch and the quality can vary wildly between printers but thats a rant for another time). Back then you had very limited tools to work with! which isn't a critique in the slightest, there are GORGEOUS traditionally printed comic pages that belong in museums!! it's not a difference in quality, it's simply a diffference in aesthetic and medium.

Y'know, I mostly write Roman as not /really completely/ Black Mask because in the movie he doesn't really feel like Black Mask yet? He's still building his underground empire. Then there's the fact that his parents are still alive -- like his mask is supposed to be made from his father's coffin which he thinks gives him some sort of power and helps him detach from that identity he doesn't want anymore because there's so much shit on his name from his failures at Janus Cosmetics.

In the movie it feels like he wants his parents to see what he's doing, that he's brought himself up despite them kicking him out. Even if it's probably not consciously like Harley points out to him and he gets annoyed. We only see him put on the mask at the end when he feels he's been betrayed again, which is clearly a trigger and serious offense to him. The mask is just sort of his thing when he's not fucking around anymore but at the same time this new self he's built. But Roman Sionis 'club owner' is also still another mask he wears for the public.

He's not really a complete person which is why he has to hide behind masks.

8. What's an old project idea that you've lost interest in?

ehhhhhh, the romantic stuff i had in mind with riyo n fox? my ideas n interpretation for them has changed so much over the past few months, old ideas really dont hold up anymore. idk, a lot nowadays is based on actual dialog and insanity that i have my close irl friends, it doesn't fit. they're friends that threaten to murder each other and have no brain when together but they love each other, not that anyone would ever realise that. it's very fun to me.

9.What are your file name conventions?

prob the character I'm drawing, or the main one, so i can find it again and the vibe I try to get across. if it's a comic I put numbers behind it so i know the order I'm doing it in. Helps with posting them too.

14. Any favorite motifs?

hmmmmmmmm I guess faces? especially expressions? I love figuring out how i wanna get an emotion across, or just a vibe. Like it's difficult, but i enjoy it so much! Especially when I finally have the eyes the way I want, I'll sit there smiling like the grinch >:) irl is a bit messier, mostly because I work a lot messier. I enjoy gore, I enjoy unclean lines, I enjoy drawing light and cigarettes and skulls and surreal things. One of my fave pieces I've ever done is a bear-skulled doc sitting at a table with a white coat on, smoking a cigarette in the dark. It's a din 5 piece I did for a friend, and the light of a candle and the cigarette are the only things in the room making it visible. It's a play on his name, cause it basically translates to 'bear graveyard' and he's studying to become a doc. It's called 'sup doc. how's the graceyard treatin ya?'. sorry, went into a bit of a ramble there, but it combines everything i enjoy painting irl and it was my first real oil piece.

18. An estimate of how much art supplies you've broken

Uffffffff, actually not that much? I try to take care of my stuff, but I've most definetely lost some brushes cause I didn't clean them the right way or forgot them in the water. Doesn't happen nowadays cause I mostly work with oil paint and acetone and you notice it's there. I hope my ratty 45 euro drawing pat is gonna hold up for a bit longer cause I'm not really in a position to buy anything else rn. I honestly think it will. It's doing a great job so far! One of my siblings actually broke my first easel. I cried. They stumbled over it in the night. I was a sad lil creature that day. But yeah. Take care of your stuff! Art supplies are expensive as shit!!!

Anthony Valentine deserves so much more for his acting in Colditz. Although I don’t think he really cared that much, he said he was grateful it gave him financial security - for actors that means everything, the freedom to say no or yes to directors or producers, and no need to get another job supporting themselves (as he actually did, as delivery man, as coach driver, as musicians in café, and even as engineers)
