Alex G - “Runner”
Tumblr media
As indie rock’s resident gonzo, whenever Alex G hits his sweet spot among the weirdness in that strum, it’s game over. “Runner”, the latest single from the prolific Philly artist’s forthcoming album, God Save the Animals, is one of those moments where all the idiosyncratic nature of the Alex Giannascoli multiverse of sound comes together effortless to do just that. Backed by guitarist Sam Acchione, keyboardist Molly Germer, bassist John Heywood, and drummer Tom Kelly, the listen weaves together a warm rustic malady, wiley lyricism, and the occasional freak show Alex G pulls in to introduce us to his trustworthy man.

Each year before Recommended Listen announces its 30 Best Albums, it prefaces it with its list of the 10 Best EPs. Some years are more difficult than others to pin down a complete list, as artists’ relationship with the extended play format wavers like a constant bell curve, but perhaps because of these pandemic times and a need to create, there was no shortage of remarkable work in the short form. From EPs that showcased a progression in already-solid craft, intriguing reinventions in style from familiar faces, and the reshaping of the sound of the scene altogether in bold, individual statements, the 10 Best EPs of 2020 are fully realized in their purpose.
10. Pay for Pain - Pain [Dark Medicine]
Tumblr media
Pain for Pain is a reunion between former Tigers Jaws members Adam McIlwee, b.n.a. Wicca Phase Springs Eternal, with Dennis Mishko and Pat Brier, now of Three Man Cannon. Their debut EP Pain is an intriguing jumping point for three’s next chapter together, as there are glimpses of the twilight hour melodic hardcore aggression of Tigers Jaws’ early work, but goes a few shades darker in traveling down rustic rocky roads after dark and letting the mind give in to morbid despair. A little wiser in their reconvening of feelings, Pay for Pain knows hurt like an old friend.
9. Militarie Gun - My Life Is Over [Convulse Records]
Tumblr media
We know Ian Shelton as the leader of one of the brashest sounding hardcore outfits going right now in Regional Justice Center. With Militarie Gun, his post-hardcore project alongside guitarists Nick Cogan of Drug Church and William Acuña, drummer Vince Nguyen of Modern Color, and bassist Max Epstein, their first fully fleshed out EP entitled My Life Is Over, the band manifests an ugly, wound tightly aggression overspill. Its pace turgid and with melodicism stewing in Shelton’s scourging pace, Militarie Gun is a totally different monster in the pit than RJC’s relentless intensity, splattering self-owns and societal discontent against a blissed out background that very much matches the décor of these times.
8. Lily Konigsberg - It’s Just Like all the Clouds [Wharf Cat Records]
Tumblr media
Lily Konigsberg’s contributions to underground music over the last several years are a well-known secret. She’s the vocalist for experimental post-punks Palberta as well as one half of the psych sun-pop duo Lily and Horn Horse. Konigsberg has been recording solo music for just as long, however, and with this year’s EP, It’s Just Like all the Clouds, her whipsmart songwriting punching holes through her penchant for compact alternative bites and electronic bubbles leaves a lasting impression that pop in just four tracks barely clocking in at 9-minutes. There’s so much possibility heard within Konigsberg’s own breakout work here, so if this is your starting point on her underdog status, the rewards going forward will be equally fulfilling.
7. Mindforce - Swingin Swords, Choppin Lords [Triple B Records]
Tumblr media
Hudson Valley hardcore wreckers Mindforce made for one of the best heavy listens and breakouts in 2018 with their breakout debut LP Excalibur. It was a listen that crossed over harder-nosed elements in the scene as it thrashed in the ranks of ‘80s NYC hardcore as much as it did slicing through bodies with a mighty metal sheath. With the band’s follow-up, the 4-track Swingin Swords, Choppin Lords EP, Mindforce wield an even sharper edge than its predecessor did as they swing a gigantic metal axe from ‘90s giant slayers all while vocalist Jason P. takes greater command up front of the charge with a big, melodic echo from his position, and leaving everything behind them in ruins.
6. Tomberlin - Projections [Saddle Creek]
Tumblr media
With Projections, the lens in which Sarah Beth Tomberlin peers into life and the surrounding world through song may have been wiped clear from the dreamy folk haze which enveloped her 2018 debut At Weddings, though she is still figuring out how she fits into it. Co-produced by Alex G and his guitarist Sam Acchione, the pairing reveals a beautifully quiet treble in Tomberlin’s pickwork while enriching the foreground her storytelling rests with vivid, natural hues. It may not completely resolve her questions in discovering love, both of the self and in another, or make amends with her past beliefs, but it’s collectively a small step toward a growing confidence in being assured with her intuitions moving forward.
5. Wicca Phase Springs Eternal & Darcy Baylis - This Moment I Miss [Run for Cover Records]
Tumblr media
This Moment I Miss, a five-track collaborative EP recorded between Wicca Phase Springs Eternal and Berlin-by-way-of-Down Under dark pop producer Darcy Baylis – who has worked recently with Camp Cope’s Georgia Maq and in tandem with King Woman’s Kris Esfandiari as the duo Sugar High – is another positive construct of the black light Soundclound emo trap collisions Adam McIlwee has torchbeared into its most focused formation yet. Though the project continues to deviate beyond one designated genre, the listen showcases Wicca Phase’s morbid swagger and mope rock in a new dimension of maturity that reaches beyond speaking to those of his cult worship.
4. Dummy - Dummy [Pop Wig Records]
Tumblr media
Dummy are no strangers to swirling textures in melted sound and colorful aerodynamics. Consisting of former Baltimore scene shoegazers in Wildhoney members Nathan O’Dell and Joe Trainer, the four-piece are now a product of their Los Angeles habitat and all of its desert mysticism, and do so in curating the dream sequence in a full color schematic. The band’s eponymous debut EP is an out-of-body experience when it comes to being a first impression of where Dummy gravitate on the sonic grid. Across the five encompassing tracks, the Dummy EP very much feels like something calling out from a past life while resonating with your current mirage of vision through motoric drums and psychedelic loops -- a wandering, wondering journey from our earthly grounds to the unseen universe...
3. Bartees Strange - Say Goodbye to Pretty Boy [Brassland]
Tumblr media
Before his eternal breakout debut, Bartees Strange set the scene of reshaping it altogether with his debut EP Say Goodbye to Pretty Boy. While attending a National show, Strange observed how few people people of color were in attendance. Despite the National being an indie rock band defining of a generation more woke and less bound by genre lines (or any other labels, for that matter,) it felt like there was something missing in that space at that very moment of time. With Say Goodbye to Pretty Boy, Strange reimagines their songs in these spaces with the black community and its contribution to indie rock in view. Not only that, but he creates something with his own identity with these preexisting creations that proves how universally bound human emotion and art can be when we reflect them into our own experiences and culture.
2. ISOLA - EP1 [Godmode Music]
Tumblr media
Ivana Carrescia has lived many lives in sound and vision, knowing no boundaries of the physical and unseen through them in her downcast songwriting as Eddi Front, working in tandem with Godmode Music producer Nick Sylvester as the haunted industrial electronic medium Gioia, or astral projecting herself into the spiritual realm under her own name. Yet, on her latest project as ISOLA, EP1 fully crosses the now-Vegas-based artist’s creative matter into an otherworldly plane where undefinable energy and remnants of the physical form merge onto a transfixing space. It leaves you suspended in constant movement, seemingly beyond time and limitation and fully awake. In close proximity once again to the esoteric styles designed by Nick Sylvester, these seven tracks are illustrious even in their fine lines as Carrescia projects a new age energy through a slow rush of sensory piques equal parts ambient, electric, mystical, and natural.
1. SOUL GLO - Songs to Yeet At The Sun[Secret Voice]
Tumblr media
Even in the short form, Songs to Yeet At The Sun, the latest EP from boundary-skewing Philly hardcore-punk SOUL GLO, is one of the most vital pieces of music in the year 2020. Chomping from the fringe as artists mutating the look and sound of the modern punk community in both its vantage point and a forward-thinking clash of style, the Philly four-piece’s latest offering slams like a poetry of Pierce Jordan’s own Black American experience through a rapid scene-changing stream of conscious, as the five-track listen surges in with adrenaline junky hardcore before recoiling into experimental, noisy raptures, then regurgitating back into bulldozing mode. Left behind is a sludgy pile of bones and guts known as the new American dream (or is it just a nightmare?) – All in just 12-minutes time.

Tomberlin - Projections

Tomberlin - Wasted
Pre-order the Limited Edition Risograph + Picture Disc
Bandcamp:
Tomberlin's new Projections EP (co-produced by Alex G and his bandmate Sam Acchione) continues the arc of her critically acclaimed 2018 debut At Weddings, weaving new collaborators and new techniques into her signature dusky milieu. Since the LP's release, Tomberlin has toured with Pedro the Lion, Andy Shauf, American Football, and Alex G, played a Tiny Desk concert for NPR, and given a riveting performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! The five-song EP, capped with a cover of Casiotone for the Painfully Alone's stunning "Natural Light," reflects this period of intensive growth and self-discovery. The rich vocal harmonies and guitar lines that made At Weddings so riveting still provide the EP's foundation, but new percussive backing and instrumental flourishes open the path forward for Tomberlin.creditsreleases October 16, 2020

He will cop to being a serious fan of a select group of disparate musicians: electronic artist Aphex Twin, country-roots singer Lucinda Williams, and Dallas rock band True Widow. And he did cover Shania Twain’s “You’re Still the One” in a session for Sirius/XM radio last month, though that was bandmate Sam Acchione’s idea.  Sandyman
