[TRANS] 220316 SOLAR for NAVER Interview

Solar: It’s been almost two years and now I am back with my 1st mini album. I didn’t feel anything until yesterday, but I’m so nervous now that I’m here. I’m even more nervous because it’s my first mini album and also I have prepared a lot of things.

Solar: I was surprised to hear that two years have already passed since my 1st single album. I can release an album quickly, but with my personality, I like to try new things or find new things. In the previous album, I poured out everything I wanted to do at that time. As a result, there is a burden on the next album and I was worried about what new things I can show to everyone. I was worried about many things. I needed an upgrade, but was also afraid of how to do it. I was also afraid of how the fans and the public would like the next album. Succh thoughts have cost me a lot of time. As I worked on our group album, I lost confidence to release an album.

Solar: I think I gained a lot of confidence with the messages that my fans sent me. As I am human too, I sometimes lose confidence when I read malicious comments. Whenever that happens, fans’ messages comforted me a lot. I was able to release this album because of that comfort.

Solar: This album means that each person is valuable and precious, just as everyone’s faces look different.

Solar: I thought it would be good if this album would be comforting and healing to lots of people. Each person has different standards of beauty, but I think each person has a very different charm. There are a lot of people who have low self-confidence these days because of the standard of beauty, but I wanted to deliver that message so they can have the confidence.

Solar: ‘Honey’ is a cute and kitsch song that goes well with spring. I think it’s music that makes you feel good and healing at the same time.

Solar: During Mamamoo’s promotions, I have things that fit the group’s activities, and there are things that I wasn’t able to do. And when I did ‘Spit it out’ for the first time, my desire and passion soared. I did what I wanted to do rather than just talk about it. This time, I placed in what I wanted to do, listened to a lot of advice from the people around me, listened to what the fans wanted and everyone worked together to make this album. Some details have been upgraded compared to the previous album. There were a lot of things I missed and there were parts that I regretted, but now I have upgraded the ones I didn’t pay attention to back then and the musicality has also grown.

Solar: I didn’t have a title song back then, so I worked really hard to make two songs in a week with Kim Dohoon and Seo Youngbae. I liked both songs and didn’t know wich song to choose as the title song. I decided ‘Honey’ as the title track after a secret poll with all employees of the company. The work was a little difficult and took a long time because the song was so gentle and tickling that I wondered if I could ever finish the song. Since I like to shout, the atmosphere was a little brutal and scary while recording.

Solar: I’ve really only given a few ideas. The performance has many points that match the cute lyrics of the song. There are a lot of points from laughing and then suddently turning into horror and then having fun. What’s certain is that it’s the song with the most choreography. The song is gentle when you just listen to the song, but there are more choreography than Mamamoo’s ‘HIP’. The choreography is split into every beat. That’s how hard we worked on it.

Solar: I have confidence in my face. Personally, I think the yellow concept expressed me well. Yellow expresses a cute, bright, energetic, and positive image. One of the reasons why many people like me is my bright and smiling fance.

Solar: ‘Big Booty’ was first written to to three years ago. I showed it once on the ‘Solar Gamsung Concert’ stage and I always wanted to include it in my first solo album. As it is my first self-composed song, I am really proud and curious as to how they will listen and repsond to it.

Solar: ‘Big Booty’ is one of the songs I am looking forward to. The lyrics and composition seem to have focused on the thought that this album itself would make people feel better and comforted by listening to it. I added lyrics and melodies that can give positive energy to everyone.

Solar: I’m Mamamoo’s unofficial rapper. I added a rap for the first time in this album. The members were surprised and told me that it was a new challenge for me, and they cheered me on to stay healthy and do well in my activities. I think I felt the same way when my members were doing their solo activities.

Solar: Because of the COVID19 situation, there were no fans on music shows, so I didn’t feel like doing it. These days, I’m looking forward to offline fansign events and I want to have a solo concert this year. I want to work really hard and show you various aspects of me this year. I’m going to be promoting through music shows, Youtube and other programs for a week. Although the situation is changing due to COVID19, I will try to show you as much as possible in a short and bold way. In addition to those activities, I’m going to show you a lot of new things. One of my goals is that I hope many people will find this album. Please look forward to it.

Epsilon-Delta – Music for Recurring Decimals (433 Records) https://433records.bandcamp.com/album/music-for-recurring-decimals Lovely collection of short, poetic synth sequences build on simple mathematical algorithms by Hong Kong mathematician Addy Choi working under the Epsilon-Delta alias. Algorithms are based on decimal fractions like 4/7, 7/9 or 3/11, using the resulting digits as the basis for the sequence. Far from being arid or too cerebral, the tracks are poetic and varied thanks to the beautiful MIDI synth sounds chosen by the programmer, who is also a clever musician apparently. Tracks may be repetitive but the album isn't. This is textbook Systems Music as practiced in the U.K. during the 1980s by the likes of The Dead Goldfish Ensemble or The Lost Jockey. Exquisite album.

Dino Felipe – The Gardeners (self release) https://dino-felipe.bandcamp.com/album/the-gardeners Mini-LP of 16 very short tracks by Miami-based electronic musician with previous full length releases on ¡Mayday! and Schematic. The music on The Gardeners is based on samples, sound collages, occasional beats and various sound treatments like speed modification, sound stretching, accumulation, heavy reverb, or else. Felipe thus creates colorful and humorous vignettes based on ethnic music snippets, found vocals, musique concrète or cheap electronic sounds. Glitch-y textures abound, as well as grotesque sounds and weird juxtapositions, the music being deliciously direction-less and erratic.

Shane Cooper – Happenstance (Kit Records) https://kitrecs.bandcamp.com/album/happenstance Gorgeous ambient, ethnic and experimental jazz music by South African double bass player and multi-instrumentalist Shane Cooper. The album is actually constructed as a collage of short excerpts from sessions recorded with Johannesburg guest musicians in 2020. The whole project was commissioned by contemporary artist William Kentridge's The Centre for the Less Good Idea, an artist run facility he founded in Johannesburg to promote local independent art projects. Cooper obviously selected the interesting and relevant parts from two days' worth of collective improvisations and the 2 side-long tracks of Happenstance are bursting with ideas and surprises. The 1st side is rather varied in instrumentation, including superb piano and cello parts, lush Rhodes electric keyboard notes and incredible South African traditional instruments played by Cara Stacey. The music is moody and adventurous, jumping gracefully all over the place. The flip side is more about exploring rhythm textures and deep bass sounds and features Shane Cooper on double bass along 3 percussionists. The collage technique is applied here as well, producing pleasant mood changes and exciting U-turns. Cooper delivers a variety of sounds on his instrument, from walking bass lines to long-held notes played with arco (briefly played backward at some point), and also performs beautiful electric bass guitar parts with reverb. The non-linearity and unpredictability of the collage strategy used in Happenstance ensures the music is keeping away from jazz music's clichés and each new listen is surprising and interesting. Two more episodes were recorded during these sessions and are available on YouTube and other platforms, like the vocal only piece called 'Tongues'.

RhaD – Metamusic (Unexplained Sounds Group) https://unexplainedsoundsgroup.bandcamp.com/album/metamusic Standing for Research for Historical Audio Documents, RhaD is a musical project by Italian music activist Raffaele Pezzella, also known as electronic music producer Sonologyst, as well as Unexplained Sounds Group label director and publisher, not to mention radio host and sound researcher, among others. Metamusic is a 40mn sound collage of mysterious radio transmissions, found vocals, spoken words, vintage electronic sounds and a number of guest stars on classical music instruments like organ, guitar, bass or piano – respectively Michael Bonaventure, Stefan Schmidt, Daniel Barbiero, Francesco Arrighi and Mara Lepore. Adroitly avoiding any ca 2021 digital artifact along the way, Metamusic's sound design is bringing the listener back to the glorious 1960s and '70s, yet the music sounds rather timeless to these ears. Metamusic recreates the sound of early European avantgarde with plenty of tape manipulations, sound collages, buzzing sounds, French spoken word and contemporary classical music instruments. The sound crafting is superb, the collage technique creating an ever-changing musical soundscape full of weird sounds, grotesque sound manipulations and Surrealist juxtapositions. What's not to love?

Angel Bat Dawid – Hush Harbor Mixtape Vol. 1 Doxology (International Anthem) https://intlanthem.bandcamp.com/album/hush-harbor-mixtape-vol-1-doxology Very personal and original album by Angel Bat Dawid, a US clarinet player, singer, electronic musician and DJ from Chicago. Created with a few sounds and a minimum of means, devoid of spectacular solo outing, these mostly desolate tracks form a meditative musical travelogue through the Black people psyche. Track titles deal with themes of slavery, racism, and Black culture tropes, though neither the occasional lyrics nor the strange music on offer here can pass for angry or vindicatory, the music being far too personal for that. The clarinet confers a neo-classical atmosphere to some of the tracks, sometimes interestingly contrasted with synthesizer sounds or electronic beats. Harmonica and vocals on Autotune also contribute to the unique sound signature of this album, with occasional hints at gospel and rural blues. Playing in continuous mode in a kind of stream-of-consciousness style, the music would work just fine as a soundtrack to a Kara Walker exhibition—Bat Dawid actually composed the soundtrack to a Yoko Ono outdoor installation in 2020. On a side note, she also released the Harkening Etudes mini album on Longform Editions earlier in April 2021, where her classically-trained clarinet playing is contrasted with sampled piano accompaniment and electronically processed vocals in a series of short, bizarre classical music études, also worth checking out.

Ron Nagorcka – Lovregana - Music From A Tasmanian Forest (Invisibilia) https://invisibilia.bandcamp.com/album/lovregana-music-from-a-tasmanian-forest-1990-soundscapes-from-wilderness-1988 This CD reissue combines 2 cassette tapes of manipulated field recordings by Australian composer Ron Nagorcka, born 1948, namely 'Lovregana - Music from a Tasmanian Forest', 1990, and 'Soundscapes from Wilderness', from 1988. Both are based on bird recordings from northern Tasmania island, where Nagorcka relocated in 1988, building himself a house and makeshift, solar-powered recording studio deep in the primeval forest. On Lovregana, short samples of bird songs are run through a sampler and harmonized in just intonation, producing eerie soundscapes of disembodied and supernatural bird singing. The music is reconstructing a fictional and artificial forest populated by dozens of birds, some far in the distance, some near ; some slowly developing a song, others performing in sudden bursts, with a variety and unpredictability akin to actual birds in nature. To this, Nagorcka adds minimal electronic loops in the background, dreamy synthesizer notes in strange tunings and discreet didgeridoo playing, all very well integrated to the sampled bird songs. These tracks are thus poetical evocations of a primeval forest via electronic sounds. While Lovregana's tracks more or less focused on one specific bird song at a time, the two tracks of 'Soundscapes from Wilderness' take a more holistic approach to nature recordings. The 1st track, 'Black Forest, Victoria', is a reconstruction of the deep forest sounds via the accumulation of various field recordings, creating a particularly dense soundscape through layers and layers of nature recordings. Here again, the natural-vs-artificial dichotomy is what interests the composer, and arguably this forest never existed, it was rather reconstructed in the studio. The 2nd track, 'Rainforest in Northern Tasmania', uses forest sounds as the basis for slow, mysterious didgeridoo improvisations, perhaps examining how the musician can dialog with the environment, being a part of it, being one with it. The superb didjeridoo playing is what fascinates most here.   .     .     .

SELLING MY K-POP ALBUMS

I’ve thought about this for a long time, but due to being a broke student and needing more space, I’ve decided that I’m going to sell all of my k-pop albums and DVDs. They are all in mint condition, and those that came with photocards still have them. I do not have any of the posters that came with them. They have only been used to download the songs onto my laptop, and are just sitting around. I live in England, and so shipping costs will be included in the price depending on the weight and destination of the package (this can be discussed~^^). Of course, you have to be comfortable giving me your address, and I will only ship the albums once I have received payment. July 1st, 2010, TAEYANGreleased his first solo album: SOLAR

Taeyang (태양), born Dong Young-bae (동영배) on May 18th, 1988. Young-bae’s entry in to the entertainment world was in the early 2000s when he audutioned to play the part of ‘mini Sean’ in JinuSean’s MV for ‘’A-Yo’’, he managed to get the part, and trough this experience he met Yang Hyun-suk the CEO of YG Ent. Young-bae later got the oppurtunity to become a trainee under YG, where he met Kwon Ji-young whom he was initially supposed to debut with as a duo called GDYB, this plan was scrapped and they made their official debut in 2007 as members of BIGBANG.  Three years later he got to release his first solo album, he contributed a lot to the making of the album as he compsed, wrote and co-wrote many of the songs. ‘Solar’ peaked at nr.1 on the Gaon Weekly album charts abd had four singles: ‘’Where U At’’, ‘’Wedding Dress’’, ‘’I Need A Girl’’ & ‘’I’ll Be There’’.

[TRANS]  190908 Mamamoo Interview for Korepo

Mamamoo, which has become a leading Korean group with outstanding singing skills and unique music, released its first album ‘4colors’ on Wednesday August 7th in Japan. From their ‘4season 4color Project’, a continuous release project that started in the spring of 2018, with a solo song of each member, and the cover of Rimi Natsukawa ‘Nada Sou Sou’, it is a song that can show various charms of Mamamoo. Interview with Mamamoo who came to Japan for the album release events and concerts.

They talked about the album and future activities.

In wednesay August 7th, your first album in japanese ‘4colors’ was released. Please explain briefly what kind of album it is

Moonbyul: “This project ‘4season 4color’ was loved by many people in Korea, it contains solo songs of each member and the cover song of Rimi Natsukawa’s ‘Nada Sou Sou’. I think it’s a great opportunity to deliver such music at once. Althought this is a short stay, I am looking forward to have a good time with my fans on this album.”

It felt special that the cover song of ‘Nada Sou Sou’ was recorded and included. This song was presented at the fan meeting in February. Have you heard about any feedback directly from the fans? 

Hwasa: “I haven’t heard of it directly, but some people shed tears in the audience when they saw us performing. I was able to feel at the venue that the people who were there really love the music we perform.”

Which song are you more interested in ?

Moonbyul: “Since I represent RED in the ‘4season 4color’ project, ‘Egotistic’ was included in Red Moon. I thing it’s a song that can make the summer more exciting. This song was released last summer, but actually I don’t like summer so much (laughs) I don’t like sweating a lot (laughs) Korea is very hot now, but Japan is just as hot as Korea. It’s a difficult season for me (laughs)”

Solar: “Well, I... I was in charge of BLUE (laughs), so I’ll pick ‘Wind Flower’

Moonbyul: “Why are you so sad (laughs)”

Solar: “The emotion of the song... suddenly came to me...”

Wheein: “I also pick ‘Wind Flower’. I personally like this song very much, and I think that if I have to select only one song from this album, it would be this one.

Hwasa: Can I pick two songs? (laughs) The song I really liked since I first recorded was ‘Starry night’. I also liked ‘Wind Flower’ from the beginning, but recently I think it’s really a good song.

The album includes solo songs by each member. Please introduce your solo songs.

Moonbyul: “’SELFISH’ is a song that was sung with a message to love yourself and try to be a little more self-centered, giving yourself more love and to give confidence to many people. Red Velvet’s Seulgi participated as a feature. Mamamoo and Red Velvet have similar debut times and are kinda like classmates. I think Red Velvet was the only team at that time that we could talk to. Among us, Seulgi and I had a small friendship, and after that program that we also appeared together, we got closer, so I asked Seulgi to be part of this song with me. Seulgi accepted and the collaboration was realized.”

Solar: “’Hello’ talks about your own position to talk or not. This song is filled with various emotions in one song.”

Wheein: “My solo song is called ‘25′, and I'm 25 years old now. It's a song with my own story up to the age of 25, including the feelings I feel while being 25 years old.”

Hwasa: “’Be Calm’ is a song that shows my growth in a way. It contains the emotions I have experienced for the 1st time when I faced sorrow that can't be expressed in words. It’s not a kind of sadness that makes you sad and tears flow, but a song that depicts my indifferentness beyond that sadness.”

In June, there was a special video meeting that was held in Korea because of the 5th Anniversary since your debut. Did you feel that these 5 years were long? Or did you feel it was short? 

Moonbyul: “It’s a long shot to say that 5 years weren’t long, but personally I think it was a short time. It’s been five years since my debut, but I’ve been working hard with the members before that, so I’m happy that we have accumulated all these years together.”

Solar: ‘I felt like it’s short. I feel like it’s only a few days in 2019, but we past half of it already and we’re closer to 2020? (laughs) In order not to be overwhelmed by feelings, when I debuted, I thought ‘I finally made my debut’, but I can’t really believe it has been five years since then. I still feel like a rookie and that everyone else is more senior than us (laughs)”

Wheein: “Time pass really fast. At that time, I felt tired and that it would be hard. Now I felt that it took me a long time, but when I look back, it was short. I think it was a time of mixed emotions, it’s hard to express in words.”

Hwasa: “I’ve never thought so deeply about ‘time’, but sometimes the concept seems strange to me. Over time, I feel something strange about my figure and my members’ that change little by little (laughs) When I suddenly talked about my age yesterday, I thought of it as: all members are already quite old. (laughs)”

Hwasa: “But we didn’t really changed that much. However, as time pass on, it feels strange.”

What’s the most memorable moment so far?

Moonbyul: “It’s the moment when I’m the most loved from many people. And the moment that take first place, was when we held our first concert in Korea, it’s for sure still a good memory for us. I always remember the time I spend with our fans at the concert because the fans are most moved whenever we held a concert.”

Mamamoo fans support you very enthusiastically. I’ve seen how they cheer hard not only for Mamamoo, but also singers in the venue.

Moonbyul: “That’s right. We also hear that many Moomoos are good and kind, this always mak me really impressed. I’m very happy and I also feel that the mind that think of us (moomoos) have such big hearts.”

It’s summer! Please tell us what you want to do personally this summer and if you have a plan to spend in this season.

Solar: “Yeah... maybe a travel? We’re commemorating the 5th anniversary since our debut (laughs) It has been busy so far, and we couldn’t think of somewhere to go...The place can be domestic or overseas, but it would be good to have a rest.” 

Please recommend a song you think your fans would enjoy in summer.

Wheein: “Isn’t it summer? Hmm, what should I recommend..”

Hwasa: “Isn’t ‘Wind Flower’? (laughs)”

Solar: “’GOGOBEBE’!”

Wheein: “Then let’s go with ‘GOGOBEBE’ (laughs)”

(all members laugh)

Wheein: “Yeah, the album was released recently, so let’s pick one from it (laughs) ‘GOGOBEBE’ is a very fun song, so you can forget about the heat!”

In Korea, the project ended with the activities of the 9th mini album ‘White Wind’ that decorates the end of ‘4season 4color’. What kind of music do you want to make next time?

Hwasa: “I think one of the advantage of being Mamamoo, is that we don’t depend on the genre. So no matter what kind of genre we’ll challenge in the future, I don’t think you’ll get that surprised. I think that’s because there is trust in the ability of each member. Thinking about it, we did hip hop, reggae, and a lot of other type of musics.”

All members: “Yeah, that’s right”

Hwasa: “We did a refreshing song like ‘Um Oh Ah Yeh’. We really did a lot, so should we go to a deeper genre from now on? (laughs)”

Moonbyul: “(laughs) More diversity (laughs)”

Hwasa: “I think we can express various genres well!”

Moonbyul: “The first album in Japan was released and it contains a lot of very good songs. When you want to feel various emotions, there are many songs that you can listen from it anytime. There’ll be concerts held from now on, then I hope you enjoy our concerts so that you wan spend a cooler summer!”

Mamamoo is celebrating their 5th anniversary in Korea, and they’re gaining more experience and achievements as a strong group. With the release of  their 1st album in Japan, which was finished as a masterpiece like a luxurious present for fans, expectations were high as to what kind of music would be shown in the future. It was also a time when I felt appreciative of the fans and the trust of the members.
