also i just discovered this yesterday, but if you guys like fancomics and are fond of the kirby anime, i HIGHLY recommend reading @thewinterraven 's Starliner and Starliner Legacy comics because they fucking rule. Starliner is complete, whereas Legacy is still ongoing and contains pretty major spoilers for Starliner. i happened upon both comics while i was poking around in the galaxia tag.
basically it takes place around the end of the anime, with some things switched up, some game characters added, a few twists, and a whole lot of intrigue. also the art is fucking GONGEOUS like LOOK at this:
Tumblr media
(i tried to pick a panel from Legacy that i really liked that DIDNT contain huge spoilers for the comic and that was significantly harder than i thought it would be lol. the whole comic is gorgeous but goddamn every panel is basically a spoiler if you havent read Starliner lmaoooo)

Imagine someone comes across Starleon without context or images or anything being like “oh it’s probably just oc x canon” they don’t know. They don’t know I’m in the dark corners of my room, shipping Starline with Black Doom. They don’t know the Lore.

How did you feel about the recent 'Sonic's 900th adventure' issue of IDW? Personally I thought the story was a little underwhelming but the callbacks to locations from the games were fun and as a huge Starline fan I loved the little nod to him at the end with the 'Greatness Began Here' carved into the rock.
I liked it, but I did feel like it ended up being a bit underwhelming, mostly because of the note it ended on.
It got hyped up by IDW as this big event celebrating decades of Sonic comics with wildly varying contributions from both old and new contributors, switching between all these crazy visual styles due to the reality-warping effects of the Warp Topaz with some of the best art in any Sonic comic ever. They even got Nigel Kitching and Richard Elson back to make it a big event celebrating Sonic's legacy in comics! It was really singled out as the Sonic comic EVERYONE should read this year.
And then it's all building to... Sonic fighting the Babylon Rogues in a cave? And also Shadow and Rouge show up, and Shadow is smug and annoying? And then Sonic just puts the Warp Topaz back in the cave where Starline found it, and that's it? I was expecting something more creative, or some kind of big reveal or twist at the end. I'm not saying I thought the Freedom Fighters or Tekno would show up (although... well, was I the only one wondering if that might happen, given the focus on Sonic's comic legacy and the reality-warping premise?), but I figured there'd be SOMETHING noteworthy at the end. Maybe that's on me for not keeping my expectations in check
I dunno. It's a fun romp with a lot of extremely cool shit in the preceding pages that makes it more than worthy of checking out, but it ends on the weakest story, and that kind of takes the wind out of its sails. It would've benefited from shuffling things around a bit

I’m curious, who was the wicked witch that got smooshed?
The wicked witch of the west in my au is actually starline! He’s like Eggman be wasn’t meant to be a witch but he practically forced himself into the position and killed anyone that disagreed with it. Unlike Eggman who fakes being nice and helpful Starline is purely malicious. He has a tendency to kidnap random kids and try to turn them into super shoulders. The only time this has really worked is with surge and kit though
He took surge and Kit in with a promise of them being able to defend themselves since their own kept getting destroyed by a certain blue hedgehog, Starline didn’t losten when they said they didnt want to do it anymore and instead brainwashed them and made them into living weapons against their will.
Starline is probably the most openly evil of the witches to the public not counting sonic. Unlike sonic who had morals and goals to his madness and murder starline dosen’t, the only goal starline has is to live up to Eggman, The Wizard of Oz’s legacy which is pretty hard considering the world practically worships him
Starline before the house fell was actually the one who had the slippers, he stole them and sonic has been chasing him down to get them back?

Starpoint AU Character Profile: Dr. Starline
Tumblr media
Age: Starpoint Squad Era: 20, Downfall Era: 24, Restoration Era: 26
Starpoint Arc Personality: Much like his canon counterpart, Starpoint!Starline is a intelligent, calculated, and driven individual. He’s confident, singleminded, and determined to reach his goal, no matter what he has to do to get there.
He’s great at playing the game of manipulation, can be egotistical and haughty, and knows how to ‘play the game’ to keep his targets doing what he wants them to.
Granted, as the AU goes on, he begins to see what fruits can be gained from working with others. He finds himself becoming more genuine, and eventually, much to his confusion, horror, and surprise, softens up and gains a bit of a heart for those around him.
As he begins to grow comfortable with the Starpoint Squad, his theatrical behaviors become more commonplace, and he finds himself confidently bantering with the group and enjoying their presence.
Tumblr media
His underlying goal of working with Eggman is still very prevalent, proving to his biggest stumbling block as Starline remains enthralled with the man and his awe inspiring legacy to the point where it ends up being all he focuses on.
And while he tries to play his cards close to his chest, if permitted the opportunity, he will eagerly go off on an excited tangent about the doctor or whatever other topic is on his mind, to whoever will listen to him.
Tumblr media
Strengths: Along with his high intellect, Starline also possesses a wellspring of knowledge regarding a wide array of subjects. He’s quite sharp, and has an impeccable work ethic. And despite his haughtiness, he’s quite a charmer (sometimes to his dismay)
He also has the warp topaz, whose power he is currently still in the process of discovering the full extent of. Despite this, he can still use it with decent competency should the need ever arise.
Tumblr media
Weaknesses: Ah yes. His folly.
Due to his upbringing and poor choice of idol, Starline can come off as quite pretentious at times, struggling to hold meaningful relationships with others due to past trauma and a skewed sense of what relationships are supposed to look like. And while insightful, he can easily be blindsighted by his dreams and selfish ambitions, often ending up being dismissive of other people’s feelings and desires. Which… often gets him into trouble. ✨ And does wonders for his relationships ✨ /j
Tumblr media
While he does grow out of this a bit from being around good influences, his pride does still like to reer it’s ugly head from time to time, as well as his underlying desire for validation and respect.
The Starpoint Squad is also a weakness, but in a more positive way. With them, he comes to gain a heart for them and realizes that, he has something else he might care about now besides Eggman.
It’s a foreign feeling to him, one he can’t quite decide how he feels on it, but he does like being admired. It does present it’s own struggles, giving him a newfound fear of rejection and having to chose between sides. But, in typical Starline fashion, he ends up doubling down and self sabotaging himself in leu of what he thinks he wants and needs.
Eventually he realizes his mistake, but by then, damage has already been done.
(He can also tend to lose his nerve if spooked, and accidentally slips up secrets when engaged in one of his many excited and loose-tongued rambles.)
Tumblr media
History: Starpoint!Starline grew up as a bright-eyed, upper-class child with a great brilliance and interest in science.
He was raised in a well-off family of nobility, but didn’t have much in the way of real friends as every ‘friendship’ was a calculated play he was forced into by his parents to forward the position of the family.
As a result, Starline grew up in a giant game of chess, spending large amounts of time of his time doing what his parents wanted him to do, with his studies and inventions mostly keeping him sane when they were too busy arguing or being away to check up on him. (Which is where his habit of talking to himself spawned from.)
So when Eggman’s global broadcast aired on TV, like a flip had been switched, Starline became spellbound. For here was a genius of his caliber, unafraid to fight and show the world what he’s made of while also using his genius to shape the world into how he saw fit.
Tumblr media
Starline was enthralled, inspired by his sheer brilliance, and quickly fell down the rabbit hole, becoming a huge fan of Eggman’s legend. (His version of a Saturday Morning Cartoon hero.) It filled him with inspiration and drive, and as his confidence bloomed, his relationships with his family and society around him grew even worse until he finally broke free from all of them, dedicating his career to following in the man’s footsteps.
Additional Information:
Starline’s Character Arcs: (Spoilers Ahead!)
⭐️ Starpoint Squad Arc:
Downfall Arc: Check back later!
Restoration Arc: Check back later!
Likes: Dr. Eggman, science, technology, robotics, the arcane, upper class, theater, Broadway, dressing and looking sharp, the Atmos cafeteria’s sandwiches, being appreciated and respected, peace and quiet, classical music, tea, being in charge of a situation, the Starpoint Squad (eventually), good food and intelligent company.
Dislikes: Sonic, being interrupted in the middle of a project, bullies, people who waste his time, loud jamming music, having little to no control over a situation, being put down by anyone

These two pages are a great example of why I love Surge and Kit as characters. The writers and artists are so good at depicting just how messed up Surge is mentally as well as how much Kit cares for her, and how she cares for him (as much as she’d like to hide it.) The pages are also great at showing part of why I love Dr. Starline too! Starline may be gone (for now, at least) but his impact, his legacy, it remains. The things he did impacted the characters not just in the immediate aftermath, but for some characters it has mentally scarred them and his actions will remain significant long after he’s gone. That’s so cool and really is part of why I think he was a great villain

What would be the point of bringing back the freedom fighters? Do they even bring anything to the table?
They wouldn't. There is very little that makes them what they are that isn't already covered by someone in the games, or close enough.
Sally would have a lot of thumb twiddling going on since she relies so heavily on telling Sonic what to do, which would be redundant in the games because Game Sonic can think for himself. Tails is already a heroic techie, so no luck for Rotor. Female powerhouses are already present in the games, so Bunnie's main selling point to stand out would be wangsting over her robotic limbs. Trip was just recently introduced, and despite what the Muh Legacy crowd says about older being better by default, her dragon form is more pleasing and interesting than Dulcy ever was, on top of not being attached to an annoying character either. Antoine... what would Antoine even do?
Say what you will about the IDW cast (I know I have), but at least with them, you could find a role for some of them if they started with a clean slate in the game verse. Not all of them, but some of them. You could potentially find a role for Tangle. You could potentially find a role for Starline preferably of the simp kind. But the Freedom Fighters? You'd have to change things up with them, and we know there'd be public meltdowns the moment THAT happens.

🦇: Translation of a post I made some time ago on Facebook.
“I love that somehow this idea was made that for Eggman to have an assistant/companion, this specimen must have an admiration for him and his work along with a slight (very large) obsession with him in such a way that he is able to to do the worst to be close to him and seek recognition from the Doctor.
Despite the events of the last comics, Starline helped create the metal virus, feeling very happy to team up with Robotnik and after the failure he was still very clinging to having Eggman by his side, quite obsessed with the Doctor admitting his mistakes and rule together, even before that Starline planned to conquer the world and give it to Eggman.
On the other hand, there is Stone who simply followed any order and mandate of Eggman, and when he disappeared, the man took it upon himself to rebuild his laboratory and continue the legacy before his return, that is, he waited for him fully trusting that he would return. After that, he continued to serve despite the fact that he had no obligation to be with Eggman because there was no longer any work involved and being aware of what the Doctor was doing, he was super willing to be with Eggman.
Although one of their biggest differences is that Eggman's opinion diverges in each one. Robotnik makes it clear that he doesn't appreciate Starline and that his worst mistake was having accepted him close to him, he only tolerated him; while with Stone he does show appreciation and trust, because he had no problem in leaving him his technology and taking it when Stone requested it”.

Do you agree that Jason, as written by Winnick in UTRH and Lost Days, acts out of character post-resurrection if we take into account his post-crisis robin days? If yes, how would you have him act/react to stuff after he comes back from the dead?
tldr: i definitely agree. moreover, classism plays a huge role in it, and i don’t think that at this point the storyline could lose these implications, which makes trying to conceive what an “in character” (for robin jay) version of these events would be quite difficult.
let’s just start from saying that i don't think it's a secret that i don't really like winick in general. despite his work being mad interesting on a conceptual level (and style-wise, genuinely well written!), he has no love for the characters he writes about.
imo utrh shouldn't even ever make it into the mainstream batman timeline. i am aware that this is a radical opinion, but my take is that it would do best as an elseworld story (and in this version too it would need some tweaks here and there), because it made damage both to the mythos of batman and jason's legacy that can never be undone. the very premise of the story is so deeply disconnected from jay's original place in the narrative, and so classist at its roots, that there's not much room to truly fix it.
(i want to say, preemptively, that i am aware that there are people who read utrh as a story of a revolutionary and a victim – and they have the right to do so, but ngl, my view has always been that it was never written as that. utrh reinforces so many stereotypes that it overshadows the revenge tragedy spirit of it all.)
another disclaimer is that, to be honest, jay doesn't have a very consistent characterization even in his 80s run, and it also has some classist implications that ideally should be either erased or addressed in the text (that winick instead exaggerated and put at the very front of his storytelling.) starlin's writing is, at the end of the day and very much ironically, more sympathetic and gentler in evaluating jay (simply because at the time he would not get away with changes too blatant) but details such as jay saying that "all life is game" and his random nonchalant behaviour that has its origin in the very beginning of starlin’s run are already signs of it. some readers will trace jason's arrogance prevalent in his red hood era to these issues and say that his actions post-res are therefore a logical extension of his robin days, but i don't buy it. even if you want to lean into starlin-esque characterisation, if you consider the core problem of the garzonas plotline – which is power, jay shouldn’t look into the solution of anything in climbing to the top. and if he did, it would have to be written as a “becoming what you feared/hated most” kind of story, which i can see a certain appeal in (and which would at least acknowledge that it was not his initial personality), but which would go back to its classist assumption of cycles of violence and doomed fates.
so – how to make his post-res era more accurate to his post-crisis robin days (and least classist in the process)?
if we were to follow my fav iterations of his characterisation (barr’s detective comics and the ntt appearances) tbh I don’t think a lot would happen, because his personality is quite mild, and just so hopeful there that i wouldn’t expect any extreme actions from him – but then again, the circumstances that he finds himself in post-res, the trauma, and his sensitivity do warrant grief that should become a driving force in his life from now on. the question is, what to do with this grief as a plot device?
i know that plenty of jason fans hate this take but I actually think the concept of jason trying to be detached and cruel but being bad at it might be one of the least offensive to his 80s characterisation. it’s def not accurate to pre-52 canon (apart from countdown perhaps) but imo for jay to be authentic and nuanced he should be conflicted about his own actions. his overconfident behaviour should be a pose – just as his frantic acts in his origin story as robin were. (again, something that many readers don't take notice of – but reading the rest of collins' writing wherein jay quickly settles into being easy-going and even a bit shy is proof of it.)
these two points lead to the “no good deed” narrative that I often talk about - the reading that jason saw his intuitive and self-sacrificial kind tendencies as something that brought him pain and that never was quite efficient, and that post-res he intentionally tried training himself out of. there are some flashes of it here and there throughout the years of the red hood publishing history, but it never got a true spotlight. and if i were to write lost days, jason flinching at his own violence would be a focal point of the story.
moving on to utrh; i have spoken about it at length before but I think if he were written 1. with more political sensitivity 2. to have retained the same maturity re: the social order 3. to have the same idea of morality, he should have followed more of actual revolutionary tracks and the whole “drug lord” authoritarian figure schtick along with the idiotic idea of “controlling crime” would have to be thrown out of the window.
and, later on, forgiveness should play a big role in his story. he's so quick to forgive and justify everyone in his robin run – this is also why i reckon his team up with harvey in tfz was a wasted opportunity.
so, in conclusion – perhaps not that much would have to change re: his actions but definitely a lot should change regarding his emotional journey and his position. i would def throw out a lot of mindless violence and power posturing out of it though. and perhaps make him a bit more polite just for the sake of more consistency (this is not me taking a moral stance btw nor tone policing a fictional character. i just think it would be more faithful to his 80s writing unless you want to make him explicitly scared. and it would be funnier tbh.)

in terms of character deaths i know youve spoken about bruces death but who else do you think will also pass for a reason other than old age and how will they die? in my head everyone lives (except technically jason who then obv gets revived) in order to see bruce die because i want them to grapple with that <3 but thinking about a batkid dying early as well is too painful…. even though its definitely more realistic
i'm sure this is a severely unpopular opinion but if we're talking about the bats specifically i think for jason's death to have any kind of gravitas it has to be the only one of its nature. which is to say that it has to be the defining moment for bruce through which he realizes he can't prioritize the emotional whims of a child over their actual safety. and i think that's still something you can rationalize tim's subsequent indoctrination—for lack of a better word—within bc at the moment tim becomes robin it's not that bruce doesn’t recognize that tim is delusional—he does—but that everyone around him believes tim is rational in comparison. which is a bit silly bc anyone looks rational compared to bruce following jason’s death. he’s in a crazed state of grief letting himself get beat up all around town. and obv that situation changes over time and bruce processes his grief about jason and his own inability to save people, and that presumably sets him up to be.. somewhat more sensible. enough that he starts to visibly care about the impact of being robin on tim's personal life regardless of how the latter actually reacts to that interest (eg blowing up at bruce when he tells steph his secret identity). in an ideal world that leads to a tim retirement arc bc there really is no way to rationalize him being robin. he doesn't need to be robin. that's never been true. the takeaway from his 90s arc regardless of however chuck dixon (or anyone else) wants to rationalize it is unmistakably that entrusting robin to a kid as some kind of legacy deal that comes packaged with being batman is absolutely absurd and it has to end. permanently. that much i agree with starlin on albeit for obv wildly distinct reasons and to different ultimate effect
but to circle back to the original point. all of this is to say that i don't think tim should die, nor damian, nor cass, nor steph, nor anyone really. cass and steph i don't treat the same as robin bc there are very distinct reasons as to why they do what they do. spoiler is to steph the way robin is to dick in that they are distinct identities birthed of their own experiences (which is why i am personally neither a fan of steph being robin nor batgirl). cass is a legacy character in the truest sense of the word in that it's less about trying to stick someone into a mold where they won't fit (robin) and more about truly rising to the occasion of espousing the same principles and values as your predecessor bc of shared experiences and subsequently birthed ideology. there's not really a narrative purpose to killing either of them if that's understood about their characters
the idea of bruce dying an early death stems from the fact that he carries too much of the burden on his own shoulders and it is realistically not possible for him to do that forever. it’s likely denny o’neil understood as much when he posited the idea. but the kids’ circumstances should be different. in an ideal world where the purpose of the batman mythos isn’t to drive its every character into an inescapable prison of everlasting trauma, there's every reason that the kids should get to live in comparison. and if anything an early death for bruce should only emphasize on that further, bc they won’t make the same mistakes he did
